Lady in Red Meghan is Joined by Her Prince for Windsor Castle Engagement

The Duchess of Sussex attended a round table discussion on gender equality with the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust (QCT) and One Young World at Windsor Castle this morning.

There was a surprise in store as the Duchess arrived...with Prince Harry in the driving seat of an electric Audi.

Meghan wanted Harry there today, and it was very much a perfect fit, as the couple were in attendance in their roles as President and Vice-President of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust.

I've talked about their dedication to the trust and the seriousness with which they have both taken the roles. I know their involvement has been transformative for the organisation in terms of raising awareness and getting projects off the ground, such as the collaboration with One Young World, which saw scholarships offered to Commonwealth youth. It's so exciting to see how ambitious they are when it comes to building the trust, honouring the Queen's legacy, and continuing to support the next generation of Commonwealth youth.

When we heard Harry and Meghan were moving to Frogmore Cottage, I thought Windsor Castle could possibly provide the perfect setting for engagements. Just a few minutes drive from their home to the royal residence, it holds very special memories, from their wedding to Archie's christening at St George's Chapel.

The round table was led by QCT Chief Executive, Nicola Brentnall, with moderation from One Young World Counsellors Rosanna Burgos and Mark Tewksbury. Participants included impactful young leaders from around the world who are leading projects and ventures that support gender equality and inclusion in countries including South Africa, Nigeria, Iraq, Malawi and Bangladesh. Discussion focused on how these young leaders are enabling meaningful change for empowering women. They shared achievements and best practices that have helped empower communities to overcome complex challenges and significant obstacles.

The Telegraph reports:

'The Duke and the Duchess heard from the founder of the south African organisation Motholung Network Against Women and Child Abuse, Lebogang Bogopane, about her personal experiences of familial domestic violence.
Ms Bogopane said: "I got married very young and experienced domestic violence. My mother is a survivor and I'm also a survivor. One day I said 'I'm tired, this needs to stop'."
She told the duchess about her project Bake for Hope, which provides locally baked bread - something that she said is still a luxury in certain parts of South Africa.'

Meghan addressed the group telling them: "I think we're all aware that One Young World has been very important to me for several years and now being vice president of QCT - it just felt like the perfect medley. What you're all capable of doing independently is incredible but then when you work collectively, our intention today is to try to create somewhat of a task force to see what we can do within our communities and then use that knowledge to apply it to whatever is happening in all these other communities. In terms of gender equality, which is something I have championed for a long time, I think that conversation can't happen without men being a part of it."

Meghan turned to Harry and added: "For this reason it made complete sense to let him join today. So thank you for letting him crash the party."

Meghan also discussed her work on empowering women and their recent visit to South Africa.

The video below has excellent footage from the meeting.

More on guests present from the Queen's Commonwealth Trust.

As the meeting drew to a close, Meghan said: "I can't wait for our update in three months to hear how you are all doing. Thank you for being an inspiration." Omid Scobie reports: "Today’s gender equality discussion was not a one-off, it was the start of a task force that will work closely to share learnings from their different communities to help each other’s."

A closer look at these two!

You'll notice Meghan had a copy of How To Make A Difference by One Young World Founder Kate Robertson and her sister Ella. The book features a foreword by Kofi Anan and is "a practical roadmap to modern day activism".

Meghan and Kate were reunited at the One Young World opening ceremony earlier this week (it was quite the moment :)). The pair go way back, owing to Meghan's work as a youth counsellor for the organisation since 2014.

Meghan looked magnificent in red for today's Windsor engagement. The ruby and deep red shades made for a striking autumn look for the Duchess.

Meghan wore a fitted v neck sweater. HeavenQRF identified it as the Deep V Pullover by British brand Joseph. It's available in several colours for £235.

The sweater was teamed with the Hugo Boss Selrita Ruby Leather Pencil Skirt. The £369 piece is described as: "A chic pencil skirt by BOSS Womenswear, crafted in lambskin with a super-soft feel. Cut to a straight fit for a flattering silhouette, this sleek skirt is designed with a back vent and smooth lining." It's available at Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Hugo Boss. Interestingly, Queen Letizia wore the same skirt yesterday (Read more on that over at Liz's fantastic blog).

Meghan also owns the skirt in forest green, she wore it for a day of engagements in Sussex last year.

Meghan's shoes are the Sarah Flint Perfect Pumps in cabarnet suede.

Meghan accessorised with her Emily Mortimer Hera earrings.

And the Vargas 18K Gold Manta Kiss Stack Ring and Bow Knot Ring (with thanks to HRH Pink Lemonade).

More on the background of Vargos Goteo:

'Grown of the desire to create original, unique designs driven by true conservationist ideals, established in 2010 by designer Alex Prijic Smith, Vargas Goteo became one of the firsts in its field to initiate a new perspective on the notion of value, highlighting the conservation of poached, illegally traded and irresponsibly sourced wildlife.
Each collection raises awareness and contributes directly to carefully selected ocean and wildlife organization campaigns. These include anti-shark finning, manta ray conservation, coral reef restoration, anti-ivory poaching and anti-rhino poaching organizations.'

Alex Prijic Smith, Founder & Designer said: "There's much more value in leaving something where it belongs. Vargas Goteo pieces are symbols of that respect. It's a great feeling to give back, and if wearing or gifting a piece can provide someone a way to do that, it makes it all that much more valuable."

What do you think of Meghan's look today? I'm very excited to see this taskforce develop.

  4. I have admiration and a little envy, for that round table discussion will be fascinating, and I imagine the amount of ideas shared and plans envisioned will be incredible with the members present. The Duchess looks lovely and the shoes are divine. I agree the berry colours suit the Duchess in a most flattering way.

  5. Wow those shoes! Stunning! Love the berry-colored sweater too. She looks great.

  6. Lots of color in this ensemble — sweater, skirt and shoes are all different shades of red. The slouchy top throws off the look. Big and slouchy are fine for casual looks, but they never photograph well. Queen Letizia wore the same skirt yesterday and paired hers with a beautiful Carolina Herrera top. Truly stunning.

    2. Letizia’s outfit was pretty as well. But I think the color of the skirt and the material make it a statement on its own, so to me personally the volume in the sleeves of her blouse was a wee bit too much. I usually don’t think mixing two shades of the same color looks good. But Meghan looks great in theses rich tones :)

    3. I also loved Queen Letizia's way of styling the out with her cream blouse but I also like that Megan chose a red top- the colour blocking/ wearing the same colour on the top and bottom is very on trend but also classic. The only thing I didn't like about Megan's top is that I found it quite low and would have preferred something a little less low and maybe a more silk/crepe material. Interested to see what styles she will choose this winter.

  12. Wow! Wow! Meghan looks gorgeous today! Head to toe perfection! I'm loving this slightly beehive hairdo today, very retro yet modern at the same time (if that makes any sense :)). I am so envious at how pencil skirts look on the Duchess! I've wanted to wear one for so long but with my menopause belly it's just not a great look :( and support wear is just the worst so I guess I'll have to live my pencil skirt life vicariously through the Duchess :)

I'm thrilled that Meghan brought Harry today because as she said discussions about gender equality must include men as well. I look forward to hearing in 3 months time what was put into action, what strides have been made in local communities with these inspiring young champions leading the way.

Lastly, I just wanted to say how "lighter" Meghan and Harry seem to be since coming forward with their struggles. I know for myself when I've been able to talk openly about what I'm going through, even though the conversation might bring more hurt and strife, it leaves me feeling better, lighter, without that burden weighing me down. I also think that Meghan and Harry are aware of the the #welovemeghan campaign and the rush of support for them from around the world.

  13. Love the combo of the Berry Red sweater and shoes with the True Red leather skirt. I have noticed that a good majority of ladies in the room were also wearing red. I wonder if it is a coincidence or a symbolic color. She is looking fabulous today from head to toe!

  14. Wow! Her speech is so inspiring and honest, she mad me a feminist again!^^
On another note: How exactly the Royals pull out the tricks about differents colors working together? Have you notice how Meghan and Kate can get away with subtle shades that are commonly frowned upon in the fashion industry?
I think it is about inner confidence. It works and blow my mind everytime on both of the ladies.
That red and wine choice is perfect.

  16. Glowing and gorgeous as usual.

Why do I always want to throw a necklace or scarf on her? I know she likes a modern, minimalist style with the focus on the clothes, but I feel like this would have been the perfect outfit for more a statement earring or something.

For the most part, including today, I love her fashion but I feel like she is a chronic under accessorizer.

  17. Hi Charlotte, I found this and thought it would be of interest. This is the designer of the rings Meghan wore on her right hand today. I love it when she wears pieces that tie into causes she is passionate about. I have several pieces that she's worn and I love that they enable me to make a contribution too.

  19. I am not a fan of combining different shades of red together especially when they have different undertones. But I have a feeling Meghan and I just don’t see eye to eye on that point, I have commented the same thing about her combining shades of green at some point too.

Having said that I know she loves her neutrals but for me she really comes to life in more saturated colours like this berry red top. It is really a good colour on her. And the whole combination of updo and pencil skirt is perfect for a work engagement.

    1. I agree with you about the pop of color. This is a great look on her and suits her personality and style.

I think work is good for these two. It provides grounding and something positive to focus on. And working on gender equality is heavy lifting. My husband’s UK cousin introduced me to the ‘Mash Report’ on BBC and I can’t get enough of Rachel Parris. Humor goes a long way.

  20. She really does look amazing! I agree that the berry colors look wonderful on her, and she looks more attractive here than in her pre-Archie days! I have noticed that still photos don't do justice to either Kate or Meghan, so I imagine she is stunning on video or in person. The hairdo is terrific; what a clever idea. My only complaint is that I don't believe lambs should be worn -- disappointed that women with the resources can't find a vegan alternative to lambskin.

Even Harry's smile looked lighter. Our favorite snitch, Daniel, said something that lightened my heart -- he said that Meghan would be fine, she just wants to make sure her two boys are OK. That reassured me that Meghan was back in charge.

This is a great meeting, and I'm sure Meghan's physical appearance and +1 helps to bring it needed publicity.

    2. Glad to hear that. The interview told me that Harry is suffering over the horrible way the press has treated his wife, and flashing back to that broken 13 year-old child he was when his mother died. Meghan is a tough American woman. She’s okay if he’s okay.

    3. greybirdk, I so agree with you. It's uncharacteristic for Meghan to not find a way around mental issues, and I believe she wanted to show how everything has affected Harry. And it's not like Harry had a great childhood. The fights between his parents, being in boarding school, seeing his mother seldom, all the printed stories, and then she's gone. The fear that any of the things that happened to his mother, from the divorce to the chase, could happen to Meghan must be overwhelming, especially with that little mini-me Archie. (He is such a cute baby!) I don't really understood what Daniel meant, but I find him very reassuring.

  21. I’m not a fan of her penchant for trench dresses. But the Aritzia dress and these separates are honestly sheer perfection.
I really really love this look.

  22. Now that’s an outfit I can get behind. She looks absolutely stunning. What a difference to her appearance on Tuesday. This look as it all- 100% autumn, 100% fashionable, 100% feminine and elegant and 100% perfect for this kind of engagement (successful businesswoman style). And it fits her perfectly.
It’s so great that they are out and about. It must take some nerves and they seem to do better. But maybe I am wrong. I thought they seemed happy in their previous engagements but since they opened up about how unhappy they actually are- maybe they can just pretend very well.

    1. I'm not sure that they opened up about "how unhappy they are," C. They opened up about how troubling and hurtful the constant barrage of abuse has been for them. As they did so they showed (rather composed) emotion and talked about their fears as anyone might who was going through something similar or a painful passage of another type.

Of course, the the Land of the Stiff Upper Lip the slightest sign of emotion prompts many to fear for their mental health and start speculating about chucking the monarchy, divorce and all sorts of speculative (IMHO all click-bait) nonsense.

Harry and Meghan revealed that the abuse was hard to take and they did so with emotion. However, I rather suspect that now that it's off their chests and the whole world knows (whatever anyone else from Granny to any grump on the street has to say about it), they will carry on with the joy they have in each other, their son, their home at Frogmore and the exciting future ahead. Insofar as possible, while doing their duty to the Crown they will build their lives together on their own terms.

I don't think they are pretending at all. It is possible (I say it because I have the experience) to live in a state of serene joy and constant wonder at the beauty of life while suffering deep pain. Yes, both at once. Amid the joy, the tears come and go. Life often serves it up that way. I think they're both fine, are working through this rough patch in their lives that they've come clean about, and will "keep calm and carry on."

    3. Yes she sure did Allison in US!❤

      Delete
    4. Thank you, Allison in US. I just watched the first part of the ITV documentary on Charles. I was struck by his comment that he'd "gone on regardless of the endless criticism, harping, shouting and screaming" he had to endure over organic farming and other causes over his lifetime.

I saw him show tears twice (without global alarm for his mental health on that count) and also kiss and embrace a woman both before and in the absence of a curtsey. (Though I haven't seen anything much over the hug/wobbly curtsey the other evening I was expecting headlines about Meghan breaking protocols again.)

Charles went on to say that he believed in the long term and maintaining things of timeless value. I think both his sons have inherited that ethic from him and will carve their own respected niches over the course of their lives as he has done. Those who cry that "the sky is falling" would do well to remember the Henny Penny (Chicken Little in the US)tale.

    5. Philly, I first thought, yes Charles was criticized, but the insults weren't personal...but they were. I long remember so many ugly caricatures of him and all the fake reports that continue saying that the Queen will bypass him in favor of William. So many ugly references to him on TV. Really, I have seen so much "fun" poked at the whole family over the years, and the family never seemed quite real. I remember being shocked when PP said that they were a family!

I guess the point is that even though it's happened to other RF members, it's still not OK to do so in a way that is designed to hurt. I do believe in freedom of speech and if someone wants to state that they don't like something about Meghan, then do it. It's not OK to put forths "facts" that are not true and are hurtful.

  23. Meghan is breaking out in colour! I love the red and purple. They are powerful and youthful colours. I think Meghan has created a sense of optimism, creativity, and positivity with her colour choices. Love her show of strength! Very nice to see Harry. I remember that in a speech in Nepal, I believe, he said that men need to be involved with women's issues in order to make effective change. Love that Harry drove his electric Audi (I think Audi is his Sentebale Cup sponsor?) and that he drove himself and Meghan, and that they have an event in their own back yard! The whole event has made me think "Yay, Meghan and Harry!"

  26. I love this bold new direction she's going with her sartorial choices. She tried for so long to not call attention to herself, and while I think that was admirable, seeing her back in the bold colors she wore pre-wedding signals a return to who she really feels she is. She did her best to conform to what she felt would be a respectful expat serving her new country. When that didn't work, she said the heck with it and came back to what she looks best in. I'm so excited for this and all the work she is doing. It feels like a real turning point.

  28. The Duchess looks lovely, her hair looked so nice up! Really like the sweater, skirt and shoes but not together, they are all different tones and clashing. The addition of a necklace or throw/scarf to take away the bareness, would have been great, for me these additions always finish the outfit off.

  37. Old Meghan is back! The photos of her today make me feel like it’s the old, confident and optimistic Meghan of the past few years. Like she’s hit a reset button. She back to the monochromatic looks that she does so well. Just like last October when she wore the green Hugo Boss skirt to Sussex. She’s rocking the romantic tendrils and the red looks so good on her. I love when she embraces color. Everything about to today feel like confidence and that she is gonna persevere. Loving everything about this look. I was thinking she would look like this for the last event, when she wore the purple rewear instead. And I’m glad to see something new but still slideshowy. This is feels very true to her and that makes me happy for her. Because even if she is feeling a little vulnerable and guarded, I do believe in the power or clothes helping you “fake it till you make it.” And this red is not a wallflower color, this is very take charge. Go Megs! I’ve missed this side of her!

  38. Meghan is SO professional, focused and articulate. She doesn’t just show up, she brings professional skills. She and Harry have wisely chosen how best to use their platform to enhance other lives and communities. This truly appears to be a marriage made in heaven. They complete each other. Each amplifies the other’s highest self.

I believe that had Meghan chosen a more traditional royal wife role, she might be criticized a bit less. Instead, she facilitates life-enhancing projects, like the cookbook, and she speaks, passionately, on behalf of those less fortunate. In all she does she truly shows up as her highest self. Which is why I appreciate her.

  43. I saw an interview this past week that Cynthia Erivo (the British actress who is playing Harriet Tubman in the upcoming biopic) gave to NBC News. She spoke about how Harriet Tubman's legacy is especially inspiring to the current generation of young women. Her words made me think of Meghan. This is what she said: "As a girl from London, and I don't know that many people know this of the United Kingdom, but we don't have that many women of color to look to as examples. We aren't given the chance. We don't discuss the history of black people at all in the UK really, not at great length at all. And when it comes to television and film, it is even less. And so I cling onto the women that I can find. So, when I came across Harriet Tubman when I was younger, she was like a torchlight. I think people don't realize that the slave trade did not miss the UK. It came through the UK. It came from the UK. So we know that terrible stain very, very well. We just never discuss it (in the UK). For me, as a black woman, I know what it feels like to be othered, to be looked down on, to be excluded, and to be told I am not worthy of something. I know all of those feelings very, very well."

  44. Sarah, that is very interesting and helps to explain some things. We have Oprah, Michelle Obama, Maxine Waters, Condoleezza Rice, Anita Hill, Stacy Abrams, the Williams sisters, actors/directors/producers, and others to look to in the US, but still ... While Meghan can't escape her heritage, it is so powerful that she embraces it and uses it to connect with such a wide community of citizens, whether UK citizens or world citizens.

  46. Sorry if out of subject of this post / I am behind catching up with news.

Yes she seems to have a comeback. Finally I had the time without a rush to absorb the documentary. For now leave the timing, place and my own personal feelings aside, I wondered if Meghan’s comments towards the ending, and Tom Bradby’s closing statement are not in sync. She said, “I always tell H it is not enough just to survive something, but you have to thrive to be happy”. Tom’s conclusion is, “If this is surviving, and not living, what is next” (both paraphrased). Is his interpretation different?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good question, Anon 15. I found Bradby's questions quite leading (even misleading) and resented how he put words into Meghan's mouth rather than letting her silence as well as her comments speak for themselves.

Of course, we will never know what pertinent or clarifying points made by either of them were edited out in order to shape the story to his desired conclusion. And this journalist is supposedly a trusted friend. Yikes...Like being hit by "friendly" fire. I wasn't enamoured of his approach.

In marked contrast, Charles's doc didn't take that kind of line or tone--it was all rather a love-letter to the next king.

    3. Philly - Thank you for giving it a thought. It had created a difference of opinion. People had picked up where Tom left off and not her remark. Regardless, I find her comment very important from personal experience as well as observation of human behavior based on the sum of people’s life experience. Tom's remark if said independent of his subject matter, would have been more interesting. in a way many changes in the world happen for better or worse from a conclusion that surviving is not enough, life has to be lived. It is just that her intention and his interpretation are clashing.

To have experienced a loss of loved ones, illness, unnecessary stress, and in some cases a loss of huge financial loss (I am familiar with stories of merchants and others, typically men who commit suicide because of finance or huge debt), and a loss of good job all can have an aftermath of some scarring which affect the inability to be happy.

I took Meghan’s remark, “To survive something is not enough, you have to thrive to be happy”, to mean surviving the down side of life (in Harry’s case may mean the loss of a parent at an early age, loss of his privacy and confrontation by paparazzi and especially as it relates to “the clicking of cameras and flashes reminds me not the best of my mother, but the worst of her experience”.

In a way I was reminded of a book I read over fifteen years ago titled, “Happiness is a choice”. That may not be the case all the time, but I vaguely remember the book’s suggestion that there are steps to take towards happiness. At the time, found it worth reading it.

“ To exist is not enough…” as the final closing of the Tom’s remark is more picked up conveniently by commenters, opinion makers and including by “the beast”. In fact one conservative African American female journalist commented, “How dare she say, she is just surviving in the back drop of deprived African children who experience just surviving although she lives in luxury”. To others, it implied, her new royal life is just surviving and not living, and they question, living a life of luxury, convenience, travel and so forth, why complain that she is just surviving. I hope Tom Bradby will do an opinion page to refresh a better understanding of exactly what she meant and not his conclusion.
Journalists generally have some good intuition along with information they may not share but use to give a hint. His ending following that remark was, “What is next?”. It was followed by other news that “Six weeks of necessary family leave (travel to USA-LA / Thanks Giving visit to Doria will take place after November 15”). Harry considered SA, but concluded it very unlikely.
I will not be surprised if they shop around for some private mansion in LA or somewhere in USA. It will make a lot of sense considering many factors including the dual citizenship of Meghan and Archie.

    4. I can see how Bradby's remark at the end might lead some people to immediately jump through the conclusion that Meghan or Meghan and Harry want to leave the Royal family. I took it to mean that they are taking steps to deal with the tabloid press and not just put their heads down and be beaten to death, like some people suggest because "the're rich and privileged." Meghan wants a life for herself and family beyond living to just "surviving" the vicious tabloid campaign to destroy her for sport and profit. They are in the business of writing "fiction"- they create conflicts, plots, and characters.

  47. Electric cars for the win! Thanks to Harry and Meghan for modeling being good climate citizens! Meghan looks beautiful. It's a good color for her and more flattering silhouette that we've seen recently.

Mon petit doigt me dit que Meghan attend 2ème bébé Sussex.

    1. Anne-Sophie, you mentioned the elephant in the room. A second pregnancy. If not now, then soon. Just trying to become pregnant is full of emotions. And Harry does not want a repeat of the awfulness that was in the press when she was first pregnant.

  50. I do wish I had those scrumptious burgundy pumps. I think that they are the same rich tone as the burgundy sweater, or jumper, and the skirt is the contrasting tomato red (at least on my monitor) so she is wearing only two different tones, with top and bottom pulling the look together. I love the "beehive" silhouette of her hairdo, too. It seems to work so well to give her the over all look. It's very chic and with a casual elegance. Meghan wears a pencil skirt so well- no wonder the Suits sylists mad them an essential part of her character's wardrobe.

  51. I just LOVE the berry-coloured hues the Duchess has worn on the last couple of outings (engagements). The colours are amazing on her!

    Bonsoir Charlotte,

  55. Just read about the women in the UK PArliament signing a letter of solidarity with Meghan in her stand against the tabloids and I was so impressed. Actually was quite stirring, and surely it will meant a lot to her and Harry.

    2. I saw that. I’m not surprised. I think of Jo Cox and how even after her death, vile people used her to troll others. The attack on women is especially personal, attacking them based on their physical traits with often nasty sexualized insults and threats of rapes.

It’s horrific. And scary. And we see it on both sides of the pond. These female MPs experienced it firsthand and I’m glad to see them (and hopefully their male counterparts) standing up In solidarity. If prominent and powerful women can’t stop such abuse, where does that leave the rest of us? I’m so sick of people saying the answer is to turn the other cheek, to show stoicism and accept such abuse and it’ll go away. They should ask Diane Abbottt if it has gone away?

    5. Anne-Sophie, It is an unusual move, isn't it? And this is not the first time, but the mother of Meghan's most recent boyfriend before Harry again tweet something very nice about her. When Meghan and Harry's romance became public, the "press" asked the mother about Meghan, and she said how smart and sweet and basically wonderful Meghan was. Funny how all the people who know her have wonderful things to say, except for those icky Markles.

Harry has been so smiley lately that I think perhaps his family is not against them. Of course when we see them together next is Remembrance Day, and they are supposed to look sombre then, so the press will likely make up situations that are not true.

      Effectivement Allison,

  58. Glad to see Meghan able to continue working on gender equality in her new role as VP of QCT & Harry continuing his support as President of QCT. The Sussexes are perfect for their roles. I appreciate that they follow up with their projects & I look forward to learning more about the task force in the future.

Extremely pleased to see Members of Parliament supporting Meghan! I’m so happy that Meghan is aware & that she also called MP Holly directly to thank all those involved for the support. Meghan has not changed from the kind & thoughtful person she has always been. She has been the victim of bullying & terrible character assassination, new laws need to be put in place to protect everyone from such unethical behaviour by media organizations.

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
