The Sussexes Make Poignant Field Of Remembrance Visit & Meet Military Families in Windsor

This morning, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended the poignant 91st Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey.

The annual event is a staple on Prince Harry's calendar - this year marks his 7th appearance. Harry took the role over from Prince Philip who served in the navy from 1939 - 1952.

It was Meghan's first time at the engagement.

The couple were due to be joined by the Duchess of Cornwall, however she sadly could not make it due to a severe chest infection. Camilla was also forced to cancel a dinner last night marking the 200th anniversary of Prince Albert's birth. Aides told reporters she's "very disappointed" not to be well enough to make it today, but hopes to recover in time for events over the weekend. I know she's been under the weather at a number of engagements recently. Wishing Camilla a speedy and full recovery.

The Field of Remembrance is an important element of the week. Now in its 91st year, it has been taking place since November 1928 when The Poppy Factory brought a group of veterans a collecting tin and tray of poppies to the grounds of the Abbey. That day, a handful of poppies were planted around two crosses. Perhaps it didn't seem significant then, but it heralded the beginning of a tradition which continues almost a century later.

The Field of Remembrance in 1931.

Now, 70,000 crosses are planted each year with a blanket of scarlet poppies covering the Abbey's grounds.

Ex-service men and women, as well as members of the public, can plant a cross carrying a personal message in memory of those who have lost their lives in the service of others.

The Field opens to the public this afternoon and will remain available to view for the next ten days.

Harry, Meghan and a representative for Camilla each laid a cross before 'The Last Post'.

A closer look at the crosses.

This was followed by a two-minute silence, a time for reflection and prayer following the chimes of Big Ben at 11 am.

The couple visited the plots for regimental and other associations, meeting veterans from all areas of the Armed Forces who have served in past campaigns and more recent conflicts.

Meghan also met the relatives of those who have served.

They were joined by twenty D-Day veterans.

Below, Prince Harry meeting veterans and discussing their experiences during service.

Harry and Meghan met members of the War Widows' Association.

Chris Ship shared this darling photo of two-year-old Florence Berry looking at the crosses laid by the royals. Rebecca English reports Florence "stole Meghan's heart" when they met.

A beautiful photo of Meghan meeting a veteran by James Whatling.

A video with some lovely footage of the Duke and Duchess meeting veterans.

The Duchess looked regal in a belted navy Sentaler coat with a black dress underneath.

Following a number of searches for the coat, the eagle-eyed Liz from Meghan's Fashion discovered it's a past season Sentaler midnight boucle piece from the 2015 collection. With news the Duchess wore it, the company has reissued the piece. It's available for pre-order for £1,387 with shipping expected in December.

As you can see Meghan's Prada belt has a very distinctive pattern. Monique Jessen noted it looks "embossed with poppies".

Meghan's elegant Philip Treacy velvet hat is from the Autumn/Winter 2019 Collection (with thanks to Gabi).

Heaven identified Meghan's boots as the Tamara Mellon PIC Knee High style.

*************

Today's engagement at Westminster Abbey is not the first for the couple marking Remembrance Week.

Yesterday, they quietly spent time with the families of deployed personnel at the Broom Farm Community Centre in Windsor.

Sussex Royal shared the following: "Yesterday, The Duke and Duchess surprised their neighbours in Windsor at a coffee morning for military families in a community centre located in the heart of the Army housing estate. Every year during the month of November we pause to remember and honour all those who have served their country here in the UK, across the Commonwealth and around the world. Their Royal Highnesses also wanted to show support for the families of service personnel who are currently deployed overseas. During the visit yesterday, Their Royal Highnesses met with young families who shared their experiences as parents and as couples who are often apart from their loved ones for months at a time. A reminder that a life of service does not simply describe the person wearing the uniform, but the entire family."

Prince Harry served on overseas operations himself and knows first hand how it feels to be away from loved ones. It can be particularly difficult for families at this time of year with the festive season approaching; to help them cope, the Army offers regular events such as weekly coffee mornings to discuss and solve problems.

Harry and Meghan heard about support offered and the unique challenges facing military families.

We know Meghan recently started taking Archie to playgroup in Windsor, it's great to see them attending engagements close to home and supporting local military families. Windsor is home to several regiments from the Household Cavalry, Welsh Guards and Coldstream Guards, with a number currently serving in Kenya on Exercise ASKARI STORM.

Local Army media covered the engagement and shared details this morning. More from Victoria Murphy:

'As parents to six-month-old Archie, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex also shared baby stories with other moms and dads. “My daughter Aeris is the same age as Archie and we talked about weaning and the children beginning to crawl—she’s just a normal mum and it was like talking to a friend,” Amy Thompson, whose husband Brad is attached to the Welsh Guards, told Army&You Magazine.
According to the publication, Prince Harry spoke about how difficult it can be for families while someone is away serving. “It’s unbelievably hard. I have so much respect and admiration for anyone who has to deal with that,” he said.
He also remarked on what it must be like for parents who are away from children. “I can’t imagine what it’s like to miss so much as they change so quickly,” he said.'

The couple spent time with a selection of children who served them tea and cakes from their playsets.

This young girl looked thrilled to meet the Duchess.

Army and You Magazine reports:

'Army spouse Leigh Smith brought along her eight-year-old daughter Molly to meet the Royals. “Meghan promised not to tell anyone that I was off school,” said Molly. “She asked me who my best friend was.”
“We had a party when Harry and Meghan got married and we’ve followed their story ever since,” added Leigh. “So it was an amazing experience for Molly to shake hands with them. It’s really special and a lovely boost for the whole community.”

People reports the visit was described as "a welcome tonic":

'Coldstream Guards welfare officer, Capt Colin Lewis, said the visit was a welcome tonic after a tough 18 months.
“The regiment are really appreciative of the support the families provide by picking up the burden when the service person is away. [The Duke and Duchess] are very down to earth, and they’ve had a snapshot of the entire community here by talking to lots of people from different backgrounds,” he said.
Tariq Baksh, from the Household Cavalry welfare team added, “They’re a modern family and completely empathized with people – our families realized that they’re no different.”

There's a terrific short write-up and video on the Forces website (click here to read it). "Some at the event even shed a tear on the arrival of the Duke and Duchess. Victoria Tucker, whose partner is in the Army, spoke to the Royal couple. "They were talking about Army life, being away for Christmas...they can compare with us, they didn't want to miss anything, with their little boy now, just how our husbands miss their children."

Harry and Meghan meet Tiger Lily and Meghan takes a very important call.

It looks like Meghan gave this adorable little girl one flower back - something she frequently does.

In this video from Sussex Royal, Meghan reveals Archie just got two teeth :)

The Duchess wore a white blouse, black skirt and khaki coat. I'll update when the pieces are identified.

We'll see Harry and Meghan on Saturday evening for the annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. It begins at 7 pm. On Sunday morning, the couple will attend Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph on Whitehall. I'll leave you with this image from Westminster Abbey.

  3. I don't love the fit of this coat on her. I just don't think belted coats suit her frame, and the "fuzziness" of this coat overwhelms the look. Her hair, hat, and makeup look fabulous, and nice to see her do these events with Harry.

    1. Agree re the fit - it looks like it isn’t settled right on her shoulders, as it gaps in front and rides up in the back. But it looks cozy!

    2. I agree, I like the coat itself but it just doesn’t look quite right on Meghan. The top half looks to big and the bottom half too small. Apart from that she looks beautiful and it was a great event to be at with Harry. Annie, UK

  6. Duchess Meghan is breathtaking. Stunningly beautiful. I think this is one of my favorite outfit of all time.

  7. Really nice overall look although Meghan's love of oversized heavy coats is something I'm not that into. She seems to always buy a coat size too large when a tailored coat IMO is more flattering. But then again I wonder if she bought this coat while she was pregnant and has just decided to turn it into a regular coat.

otherwise she looks great and it's wonderful to see them out and about.

    1. I do understand what you are suggesting but the oversized coat is most likely her actual size. The appearance of the coat is a style statement often worn in a casual style. The fabric is very popular for the winter months right now.

    2. Oversized wrap-coat (I call it "bathrobe") chic has been in for a couple of seasons now and doesn't seem to be a trend that's waning. Slouchy, relaxed and loosely self-belted (or not), its manifestations come in everything from refined wool/cashmere options to synthetics that emulate shag carpet or thick, knobby bathmats. When it goes that far I call it bath mat chic.

Helps if you are tall and thin to rock this look, but IMHO we'll look back on it with the same fondness we give 80s monster sleeves. If not svelte, though the wearer may be totally on trend, the look more often than not, devolves into dumpling chic. When paired with Ugg footwear call it dumpling mess. Not, I believe, what anyone actually aims for.

The one Meghan is wearing today is actually quite fitted for this look, and levels up another notch with the embossed belt and gorgeous boots. I like it. A lot.

    3. Oversized wrap coats have been in for years. I have a few that I bought several years ago, and I've owned a number over the decades. They actually don't require a tall, thin frame to wear well if the fabric isn't too thick. They can, in fact, make even plump people look quite slim and chic when worn with tall boots. They certainly don't call for UGGs. Only parkas and other more utilitarian cold-weather jackets really do.

      Delete
    4. I totally agree. These are outerwear that she is trying to belt into a dress coat. This would be great at appearance where it’s more casual and she takes off her coat after a walk about in the cold.
Her hair and makeup is sublime. But I think this is a miss. The facinator doesn’t go. Always just a little off.

  9. I don't always like what Meghan wears. But she looked perfect this morning. The hat is such an elegant touch. And her hair looks amazing. Well done!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Really like the hat

    ReplyDelete
  11. That hat is quite pretty, but it's too delicate and elegant for the heavy textured coat and the boots. They called for rather a different style of headgear. I'd wear that hat to an autumn wedding with a pretty navy dress. I'd also wear my hair up with a hat like that. Moreover, while I like the coat, those thick, textured styles don't work all that well with a belt. Belts are best worn with tailored coats made of a thinner fabric. However, with another hat, even the belted look would have been fine.

I do appreciate the way they look so concerned with army people and families, of course Harry knows about that , and Meghan has such empathy with everybody ! Of course I love the picture of Harry holding the little girl ... I so wish they have a second child and it is a daughter ... Prince Charles would certainly love too !!
I love the way Meghan dresses , loose fitting , casual clothes, feeling physically comfortable makes your mind free for all those you meet .... regarding the Field of Remembrance ceremony , just a detail I am not really fond of : her hair , I would have had them in a bun , it looks a tad too gorgeous for such a solemn moment ... nothing really serious , though .

    2. I agree, it's a great hat and love the color! Meghan looks great in it, but the coat just doesn't fit with the hat. Lovely remembrance of those who served in the World War's, their heroic efforts and their sacrifices. Britain certainly does a great job of remembering their veterans.

    4. Hi Bluhare, I wanted to let you know that I received the Wear Nothing Underneath shirt from Meghan's visit to the Luminary Bakery. I ordered a size medium but will be exchanging it for a small. The shirt appears to be very well constructed but was very long, like skimming my upper thigh long. If the small size ends up working for me I'll let you know how it launders.

  15. Meghan is looking fabulous today. Her hair is looking so lush and healthy with a beautiful shine.

  16. She looks so beautiful in that fuzzy coat and lovely hat! I would look like an escaped bear, but she looks so well finished in her different textures. The closeups are just amazing. I don't like what she wore to the family get-together, but I'm not critiquing what the other women wore, either. I was thinking about the members of the RF -- they truly are people like all of us, but it's the institution that can remain as it was, including the buildings, artwork, jewelry, and all the symbolism. Kate went on a mother get-together was not to flaunt her position but to connect with other women with children who are her children's classmates. Harry and Meghan want to share stories of first teeth, first words, crawling, etc. I think of this whenever I see one of those "she's broken protocol" headlines -- because Kate and Meghan ARE the RF, whatever they do becomes the accepted protocol.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I agree with others that her hair, make up, hat is absolutely spot on. She looks stunning, so glowing and young, just beautiful. Boots are great too, definitely more interesting choice than we usually see on such occasions, the belt is also nice touch. But the coat, sorry but no sorry. There's nothing wrong with it but it is oddly shaped especially with the belt. She lived in Canada for many years and I think she has a full wardrobe of great coats she is decided to use now but most times it does not work.First I do believe they are too thick for English weather even in November. She does need a couple of good made for her coats for such occasions. I remember that in her earlier years Kate also insisted on wearing her old, ready made high street coats and at times those were odd choices as well.
I think Prince Harry is very happy to have a companion at such events at the very last.

  18. I am 100% on board with this look. She is radiant also.

She tends to plain, unadorned looks often so I am loving the richness of the coat, belt and hat. I love her in a cinched waist. Absolute home run!

  19. A lovely post Charlotte. I always love reading about the event as much as the intrigue of what Meghan wore. Loved how down to earth they were at the event yesterday. Today, I adore her hat but wish her coat was more formal as I feel the teddy bear coat was too causal. I adore her style but have been growing perplexed. I followed Meghan before she was a Royal and she was well put together and often talked about the importance of tailoring in the past, which seems to be lacking of late. She’s juggling a lot so perhaps clothes just aren’t her focus right now, which is totally fine and understandable.

    1. I agree with you Jax/Canada about the casualness of the coat. Love the coat, but don't feel its appropriate for the occasion. Also agree with you about something is off with her styling, just not as pulled together as in the past. Seems like the coat is too small, maybe it's a post-baby issue with trying to find comfortable clothing. Not a criticism, but an observation.

    2. Anonymous7 November 2019 at 18:16...people with their comments. So many saying the coat looks too big now you're saying too small. Hysterical. Opinions!

      Delete
    3. The only thing "wrong" with this lovely coat is that it isn't propperly wrapped - meaning in a way it really closes/the dress underneath is not seen. That would make that look 150% put together/formal

      Delete
    4. I'm sorry jmccain, comment not meant to be hysterical, just my opinion. It is a bulky coat, but doesn't come together at the bottom like in the photo with the model, it 'v's' in the front which generally means it doesn't fit quite right. The belt also makes it seem like its trying to hold the coat closed. Again, love the coat and its color, just don't like how it is styled for the occasion, and yes I don't think it fits her right. But then I can have an opinion without being mocked, can't I?

  20. i love that they went to visit the military families in Windsor. It is a way for them to get to know the members of the community but it is also great to give a boost to those missing loved ones on duty abroad. The duchess looks fabulous on both days and it was lovely seeing the pictures and videos of their interactions with the kids, families and veterans.

  21. Meghan really is so pretty. So nice to see her and Harry at such an important event and great to hear about their support for families of service men yesterday. I'm not a fan of this look on Meghan. The coat overwhelms her frame and the tiny hat looks odd on top of it. Also, the bulkiness of the coat fights with her flowing hair. And to top it off, the slouchy boots just add to the bulky overall look. I just don't care for any of it together, but separately, and styled differently, I think it would be great. In my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love the hat and love the coat. I like the boots but not with that coat. I feel like the boots make it the over all look a frumpy. I think it would have looked more polished if she was wearing a pump. It's almost like there's too much fabric. Other than that she looks great. Correction....I ADORE that hat!!

oh my I don't even know where to start. I have to say I think this is the most beautiful ive seen her look. she looks perfect! I really love her longer hair, love the waves, and I think this hat is at just the perfect place on her head/face and looks beyond great, maybe im just getting used to seeing her in a hat or maybe she is getting more comfortable wearing one but this is the best hat look I think by far! great color and great coat. is her makeup different? New face cream? something about her is just seeming to glow!!

not a big fan of the outfit from yesterday, that skirt does not seem to be laying right in the back, odd wrinkles in the photo?? but how nice to see the event, great to keep the spot light on veterans and their families. loved the photo of them with the little girl with the single flower.

Archie is adorable, nice to have them talk about him even just a little bit. Im guessing we wont see him until the Christmas photos?

I hope Camilla is feeling better for the events this weekend. Looking forward to seeing them all.

Every year I look forward to these Remembrance engagements. I'm disappointed Camilla was sick and couldn't be there, as I was really ready for some Camilla-Meghan interactions. I hope she gets well soon. I picked up a bad cold when I was in London last month and it took me weeks to get over it.

Windsor was one of my favorite places to visit and I'm loving Harry and Meghan's growing relationship with it. Harry is always a hit with children and I'm sure it meant a lot to all the people there that they took the time to show up.

I adore Meghan's hat and her hair curled like this. The longer length really suits her. I wish I could even grow mine that long, let alone style it so well lol! The midnight blue hat is gooorgeous on her. I think she looks perfectly wintery chic, even though the coat is a little bulky. I know a lot of people comment on her coats overwhelming her, but I don't think they do. Not this one or the khaki one she wore in Windsor, at least.

  25. I knew it was Sentaler! If HRH reads this blog ask them to do sizes for all women, they stop at US 12. I even tried ordering one that came bigger and was too big in chest/back but upper arms were too tight. I was heartbroken I had to return it wanted one of their alpaca coats for so long

  29. Lovely photos of both events. Harry and Meghan appear to have very much enjoyed meeting the military families, especially the children. It's very nice to see them doing events around Windsor. I especially loved Meghan's hat at the Field of Remembrance. I think it was a perfect light touch to team with an otherwise heavy-looking coat. It lifted the whole outfit, IMO, and I liked its lighter colour from the coat. I thought someone mentioned that Meghan's coats that she probably wore in Canada are probably too heavy for the UK, but I found the damp cold in Britain rather bone-chilling, if not used to it. And Meghan is a California girl!

  30. Thank you for your wonderful description, videos and photos of both of these events. I learn so much coming here since I am American and am not as familiar with some of these traditions. I am so moved by the annual pause in your year to thank and acknowledge the sacrifices made by those who protect the nation and their families. We have Veteran's Day but it does not feel the same to me. Just one of the reasons that I have always loved your Royal Family. Meghan looked beautiful at both events and Harry looked perfect too. How kind they are to share with those they are visiting with (and by extension the rest of us) details of Archie's development..two teeth and crawling! AnneHH

  31. I wonder if you could explain why the cipher (I think it's called) for Harry and Meghan above their initial, is different than Camilla's? Theirs look more like a tiara or coronet whereas Camilla's looks more crown like. Thanks so much.

In Windsor event, it is fun, as always seeing them interact with children. It’s wonderful to see Harry sitting on the ground, surrounded by little ones!
Supporting military families in a low key event is so much a part of their work ethos. It’s why I love them!

  37. The most gorgeous hat she's worn. I would like to see it with her hair up. I like the coat and boots but it does seem to swamp her small frame. It's a coat made for six feet tall and rail thin. The very best part is her warmth and natural kindness talking to the people they meet.

  38. Meghan looks great for a somber occasion. I really like the navy look. It’s appropriate without all black all the time. As an American, I feel that we are slightly more removed from the impacts of ‘The Great War’ so I imagine it is very meaningful to take place and lay a wreath on behalf of England and the BRF.

  44. The Duchess looks classy and appropriate for the occasion but for me, being engaged with the veterans and their families is the most exceptional part of the day. The families and individuals I would posit only cared about how Meghan and Harry treated them, related to them and respected them by being present and by listening and caring from their hearts. I think the images speak loudly to the immense altruistic impact Meghan and Harry have upon people. This is the epitome of service.

  45. Meghan and Harry are in their element when they are out and about among the people. (I watched Harry congratulating the South African team winning the rugby championship. The very happy players were in the locker room walking about in a relaxed state and Harry was treated like one of the lads.) The video of Meghan revealing that Archie has 2 teeth was a scoop and made me laughed. Send out the cute kids with the mic and there’s no need for ‘palace insiders’. Lol.

It’s lovely that these two are there as part of the community, connecting with people and showing their respect for the work and sacrifice of service men and women and their families.

Thank you so much Charlotte for going through the news feeds and summarizing these royal engagements for your readers. It’s much appreciated and made my commute home much shorter and in a happy bubble.

  46. I Love this coat, very pretty colour, but I prefer the look on the model, coat enclosed and the preferred choice of belt. The boots are slouchy/baggy and give the illusion of added bulk. The hat is beautiful, soft colour, just enough netting with subtle sparklers scattered, really lovely. The Duchess's makeup is perfect.

  47. My Pinterest account is filled with photos of winter coats right now. Oohing and aahing as soon as I got a glimpse of her. Navy and black coat with those gorgeous boots, gloves and the navy hat. She looks stunning today. They have been very busy since their return from Africa, especially Harry.

    Thank you, Charlotte!

  50. So many things I love about the look. The hair and makeup are perfect and a great style for the hat. A much better look than when she wears those shapes with sleek hair or a bun. The hair makes it look "old time hollywood" which is a beautiful look but I know that not everyone thinks that is a good style for this kind of engagement.
I am definiteliy not a fan of black and blue combinations. The colours are too similar and I think too many shades of the same colour make the look uneasy on the eyes.
I love the top of the coat and the gloves, I even think the material is alright for the engagement but the shaft of the boots don't match the rest of the look. The belt doesn't really fit in too.

  51. Anne-Sophie, I hope you will continue to comment in French. Obviously that is how you can fully express your thoughts, and I find them very interesting even though the translation may not be expert.

      Bon week-end.

Remembrance Week is certainly not about fashion, but I think the white shirt Meghan is wearing to the coffee morning in Windsor is the same shirt she wore to their wedding rehearsal. The "tie" feature looks the same as pictures of her arriving with Harry by car for a final walk through (she's in sunglasses and he is also in a white collared shirt). Just a thought!

Charlotte, thank you as always for pulling together such a wonderful post. I'm looking forward to the poignant service and concert.

    1. I don't think the white shirt is the same as it's a shorter sleeved shirt then the one she wore to the wedding rehearsal. Thanks though for reminding of that as I loved her hair that day, the half up/half down was stunning on her.

  53. Anyone who takes the time to give encouragement and support to soldiers, veterans and their families are TOPS with me. It is great seeing the Duke and Duchess of Sussex together at this event. Thank you, Charlotte for sharing.

I feel that the more time passes, the more we will not find Meghan of yesteryear. She made a cross on the woman of yesterday so that we can talk about her actions and not her outfits.
The Guardian said, "Every time Meghan goes out it's the effervescence.
Everyone wants to see it. It focuses all the records.
It must not end up shading Harry like it was once with his parents-in-law (Diana and Prince Charles)
She must be aware of it.
To be with the people is their creed.
He gives happiness wherever they go.
I can not wait to see their foundation next year!
It must be in their image

  55. The blue coat that does not fit & fasten is reminiscent of Meghan’s look at Princess Eugenie of York’s wedding.

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
