The Sussexes Kick Off 2020 With Canada House & Hubb Community Kitchen Visits

Welcome back, Harry and Meghan! The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made their first public appearance of 2020 with a visit to Canada House in Trafalgar Square, London, meeting with Janice Charette, High Commissioner in Canada to the UK as well as staff to "thank them for the warm Canadian hospitality and support they received during their recent stay in Canada".

The couple arrived directly from a private visit to the Hubb Community Kitchen. Sales of Together enabled the Hubb team to refurbish their kitchen, open 7 days a week and a number of the women involved gained certificates from several training courses enabling them expand their skills and roles. More from a Susssex Royal post shared before Christmas. "Today, the women at the Hubb Community Kitchen continue to have a positive impact in their community, across the UK, and around the world. Whether it’s providing a safe space for women and children to come for a hot meal, supporting local schools, serving free lunches to senior citizens, partnering with the Red Cross to provide lunches for refugees, or feeding the homeless - the Hubb helps and heals through their support and sustenance."

They were warmly greeted by the High Commissioner.

Harry, Meghan and Archie returned to their Windsor home, Frogmore Cottage, just days ago following a six-week break on Vancouver Island. By all accounts, they had a wonderful Christmas surrounded by close friends and Meghan's mother Doria Ragland. During their time there, they enjoyed taking in the stunning scenery during walks with Archie and hikes with friends. On New Year's Day a young couple were out during a hike when a woman approached them and asked if they needed help taking their photos. Asymina Kantorowicz told People: "I’m a Suits fan and I first noticed Abigail Spencer and then I looked up and realized it was Meghan taking the photo. Then I looked back at the group and realized Prince Harry was there too!" CTV News adds: "The Victoria woman says Meghan was 'super friendly' during the encounter and she appreciates that the royal took the time to stop to help them out. 'We didn't want to make a big deal of it. We hope they're enjoying their family trip to the island.'"

I think they both greatly appreciated the privacy they were afforded in Canada and the chance to recharge after a difficult year. The visit to Canada House is both a courteous choice and perhaps indicative of the year ahead. I have no doubt an official tour of the country is on the cards for this year and Victoria, Canada is a front-runner to host the Invictus Games in 2022. Today was also an opportunity to highlight the links between the country and the UK. Buckingham Palace noted: "The UK is home to a vibrant and diverse community of expat Canadians. Up to 500,000 Canadians currently live in the UK, a figure that reflects the strong, historic and enduring bond between the two countries." Reporter Omid Scobie understands we'll be seeing Meghan focusing quite a bit on her role as vice-president of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust throughout 2020.

Additionally, the couple are looking forward to launching their own charitable vehicle, Sussex Royal, in late spring and the Invictus Games in Amsterdam in May.

People reports:

'On the way into Canada House the couple met some of the employees who were standing outside. Harry asked them if they’d all had good holidays. “Meghan said it was beautiful,” Jamie Weare said. “They seemed really relaxed and happy.” Adds her colleague Sumira Osmin, “They are just beautiful and just their aura…they are always so positive and very friendly.”

Harry and Meghan enjoyed tea and Nanaimo bars with Ms Charette.

The Canadian dessert requires no baking and is named after a city in British Columbia (the province Harry, Meghan and Archie stayed in). It consists of several layers including chocolate, custard, wafer and coconut.

The High Commissioner spoke about the meeting and topics discussed. More from Victoria Murphy:

'The High Commissioner described the royal couple’s visit as a “chance to catch up, hear a bit about their visit to Canada and their holidays in Canada, and their impressions.”
She added that she discussed with them “what they see in terms of their priorities for the next year,” pointing out: “There’s a lot of areas where they have interests which are also priorities for Canada.” Citing topics such as gender equality and gender empowerment, homelessness, mental health and youth engagement, Charette said she thought there “will be some opportunities for us to think about Canada House and the Sussexes doing some interesting work together.”
She also spoke about the couple’s down time over their break. “The fact that they were able to go to Canada to enjoy the holiday season with friends and family and basically to have privacy and be undisturbed and to be able to enjoy peace and tranquility and the beautiful country, I couldn’t be happier,” she said.'

The couple met members of the High Commission team who work in a range of sectors supporting the partnership between Canada and the UK.

From there, they visited the Canada Gallery and viewed a special exhibition by Indigenous Canadian artist, Skawennati.

The multimedia artist is best known for her online works that explore contemporary indigenous cultures. Her Machinima series TimeTraveller™ has episodes on the death of Mohawk saint Kateri Tekakwitha, the Dakota Sioux Uprising of 1862 and other watershed events in Indigenous history.

More on the artist:

'Born in Kahnawake Mohawk Territory, Skawennati graduated with a BFA from Concordia University in Montreal, where she is based. She is Co-Director of Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace (AbTeC), a research network of artists and academics who investigate and create Indigenous virtual environments. Their Skins workshops in Aboriginal Storytelling and Experimental Digital Media are aimed at empowering youth. In 2015 they launched IIF, the Initiative for Indigenous Futures.'

Before leaving, Harry thanked staff for the "warmth and hospitality" they received in Canada. Meghan added: "To see Archie go 'ahhh' when you walk by and just see how stunning it is - so it meant a lot to us."

CTV News reports:

“What a beautiful place you live,” said Harry, thanking staff for the Canadian warmth and hospitality, which he called “unbelievable.” “That was exactly why we chose Canada,” he said. “My wife will now finish in French,” he joked to laughs.
“It was just such an incredible time (we were) grateful to have there, and with our son too,” said Meghan, adding that their eight-month-old son Archie seemed in awe of the beauty of B.C.
Some insiders have speculated that the couple may announce an official royal tour across Canada as there has been a “longstanding invitation” from the government since their wedding,"

You can hear the couple addressing staff in the video below.

And time for a group shot.

Readers will recall Harry and Meghan last visited Canada House on Commonwealth Day last March where they met and spoke with young Canadians from a wide range of sectors. It was one of Meghan's last engagements before maternity leave, during which she wore a green Erdem ensemble.

The High Commission of Canada in the UK provides consular assistance to Canadians abroad and works to promote Canada in the UK. The Greek Revival building has served as the office of the High Commission of Canada for almost a century.

It was officially opened by Harry's great-great-grandfather, King George V, in 1925. The King said: "Canada is a great country: alike in the literal sense of vast extent from 'sea to sea' and great in achievement and in promise: and it is right and necessary that its official representatives here should be housed in a manner worthy of the Dominion and adequate to the discharge of their ever-growing and important duties."

Meghan selected a stylish ensemble with warm camel, toffee and brown tones today.

Meghan wrapped up in the Sabel Coat by Reiss (with thanks to Emma for spotting the label as the Duchess left). It is described as: "Crafted from a luxurious wool blend and cut to a slim fit for a contemporary silhouette, the Sabel overcoat in camel is a cold-weather must-have." The coat retailed for £345 before going on sale for £190 and selling out. It remains available in very limited sizing in red and black at Selfridges.

Caroline and Danielle identified Meghan's sweater and skirt as Massimo Dutti pieces. The $69 Plain Silk Wool Sweater in toffee features a high neck, straight fit and ribbed trims.

My favourite element of the outfit is the Satin Midi Skirt. The cut of the A line piece is just lovely. It's available for £89.

Meghan brought back her Jimmy Choo Romy velvet pumps.

The Duchess accessorised with her Kismet by Milka full circles bracelet.

And a pair of Catherine Zoraida Swallow Stud earrings (with thanks to Meghan's Mirror).

It was splendid to see Harry and Meghan back and looking refreshed and happy.

The Telegraph notes the couple attended meetings at Buckingham Palace this morning and have "several engagements in the diary for next week". When asked how the couple are, an aide from their team said: "Invigorated, excited. The team were all excited to see them this morning."

  10. Very happy to see them again. They look rested and (hopefully) they have rediscovered all the positive vibes life can offer. I love it that they have such a warm place in their hearts for Canada (we certainly do for them!).

Megan looks very good in these warm colours, I personally believe they suit her better than the blacks and navies she often wears.

Looking forward to the updates, happy new year everyone!

  12. Quick question for those who have been royal watching much longer than I. Is it normal for members of the royal family to visit a high commissioner or a embassy to "thank" them for the hospitality they received during a private vacation? I would understand the visit if it came after an official visit to that country but I can't recall this being done before in terms of a private visit. Thank you in advance for your answers!!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes it is normal.
Charles and Camilla do it. William and Kate have occasionally done it.

    2. Yes it is normal for them to do this. Charles & Camilla did it after their honeymoon and I believe William & Kate has done it too (can't remember off the top of my head where they went though). It is a very good diplomatic move.

      Delete
    3. For starters understand that Royals are in the "business" of soft diplomacy which be definition is a way of mutual empowerment process with no concrete goal oriented action bit efforts are channeled to hit an indirect goal".

This implies that you should not take things at face value and not everything done has a precedent.

Secondly, like the post mentioned there seems to be other work with Canada that is in development. Most recently, Trudeau finally filled a Crown related position that had been vacant for a long time. That goes a long way in solidifying the relationship between Canada and the Crown.

Finally, to ensure that they had the private break there must have been a lot of cooperation with the government and locals. Most times having a VIP can disrupt a community. The fact that they were hosted warmly and their privacy respected is not something that Harry and Meghan take for granted and a public appreciation (given that their presence in Canada became quite public) is simply good manners.

    4. The only time I can remember W&K doing something similar was before they left at the end of their honeymoon they made a private visit to the coast guard who helped to ensure that they were not bothered by paparazzi. I only read about it recently. But as far as I can remember (maybe somebody can jog my memory) never once they returned from a private holiday. But then I also can’t remember W&K visiting a High Commission or Embassy’s unless it was to sign a book of condolences or in connection with a tour.
So I agree with Charlotte that a Canadian tour looks to be very likely and in that light this visit would make sense.

      Delete
    5. Actually, I don't think it is. That would be like Kate and William thanking Switzerland after skiing. They do a formal thank you after official visits.

    6. I don’t know about Charles and Camilla, but Kate and William have never done it after a private holiday.

I wondered the same thing. I’m worried they are mixing business with pleasure and they will burn out again. But I could be wrong. I hope I’m wrong. They both look fabulous today, I hope they feel well also.

    8. There have been statements before but as far as I know never a whole visit to show their thanks like this. But anytime diplomatic vip's visit, the host country usually plays a big role in helping provide security for them (and I imagine this is even more true for Commonwealth countries where the Queen is still monarch) .To be honest Canadian taxpayers probably just footed quite a large bill for the private 6 week holiday of a foreign family visiting with no official/diplomatic business, so it's only right that the Sussexes show their thanks. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if they also chose Canada instead of the US at least in part because it would have been hard to justify a completely independent country like the US footing a security bill for that long of a private holiday for a British family. Staying in Canada meant at least the funds all came from taxpayers ruled by the Queen too. To be honest it's partially why I'm a little surprised that they didn't take at least part of their break at frogmore or any of the many other royal familys properties, just to ease that security burden. It would've been one thing if they were actually visiting one of Meghan's former homes like Toronto or LA, but to forego frogmore for a home with no sentimental connection or location is interesting.

      Delete
    9. They released pictures on vacation which were obviously a nod to host Commonwealth countries - Archie was basically a clothing advertisement. In so far as there were security costs incurred by Canada for the visit - the thank you might spur tourism interest in Vancouver Island - helping to pay for the cost. It would make good sense to thank their hosts in this very public way.

Canada's a member of the British Commonwealth; Switzerland isn't. Perhaps that's the difference.

  13. They look so happy! I LOVE what Meghan wore and how nice that she could look smashing in clothes that were not designer prices! I first read elsewhere that it was a Stella McCartney coat and was so happy it was something about 10% of that designer cost. More money left over to buy those treats!!

I would love a Canadian tour -- really loved when W&K went, and there's so much more to see.

Depends on when you are comparing her face now with.
If it was with her face before Archie's pregnancy, yes it is fuller.
If it is After from the last time she visited the Canadian embassy last common wealth day, no, it's not. 😀

      Delete
    5. It has been known that pregnancy can change the shape of a woman's face, and not just during pregnancy, but afterwards as well. Not all women, but it can happen.

      Delete
    6. Anne-Sophie, nouns have no gender in English so the sentence as written can have only one meaning. “Her face” specifically refers to a woman’s face; a man’s face would be “his face.”

      Delete
    7. Anne Sophie, she was speculating that Meghan’s face looks fuller. Seems a lot gets lost in translation.

    8. Yes, the Duchess’s face is fuller. It could be from stress or the way she did her eye make-up this time.

  17. Happy to see them back! Charlotte, do you think they would ever move to Canada permanently? I know this has been speculated before, but I wonder what that would look like. Would they have to step down from royal duties, or would they just continue building commonwealth relations from afar? Seems like Canada was very good to them, in terms of privacy and hospitality. I can see why a move would be appealing.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It's purely speculation on my part, however, I do think they hope things will work out in the UK. They both care deeply about their roles and have so much scheduled for this year, I don't believe they have any plans to leave the UK. I do know they both want to expand on their work with the Queen's Commonwealth Trust, with that in mind, several reporters and Canadian outlets suggested a tour is in the offing. I would say today's visit was partly connected to that. The High Commissioner also said they have plans to work with Canada House in the future. We could see a longer tour of Canada this year (several weeks potentially) or even an extended stay for several months, though there's been no suggestion of that. It's merely a possibility they might consider.

      Delete
    2. There would be some serious questions about who would be funding their security if they were based at least partially outside of the UK. especially after just using millions in taxpayer money to renovate a very large nice secure home at windsor.

      Delete
    3. Canada is a Commonwealth country, a monarchy that shares the British sovereign. The Queen is also the Queen of Canada. That being the case, it would not be inappropriate for them to choose to live in Canada, and they could still carry out various royal duties there, but on a reduced scale and schedule. There was a time when Harry could have been appointed Governor General -- the Queen's representative -- of Canada, but these days, the Canadians want a Canadian-born GG.

    1. It is relentless. Buckingham Palace has dismissed the story in question as "speculation". Much like the stories about a move to Africa, I expect it's a tour or an extended tour (Charles and Diana did a six week tour in Australia when William was very young).

      Delete
    2. I was thinking the same thing when I saw the “reports” that they might move to Canada. This is like the third rumoured overseas move in two years. I don’t know whether that means they are seriously looking at overseas options or whether it is all pure fabrication, but I tend to lean towards the latter.

    3. My position is this: If it's not an announcement from BP or posted here it's fake news. You can't miss the headlines, but I don't read the content. This is right up there with twins fever every time an outfit pooches or stretches a bit around the belly or if a photo angle happens to make a face look puffy or tired. Most of this salacious as well as the vile nonsense is fed into automated systems that spew it worldwide faster than an eyeblink. It's so utterly transparent and, frankly, boring.

      Delete
    4. I wonder if Harry might be interested in being appointed Governor General of Canada? I’m not very knowledgeable about the position, but it seem to give him a (ceremonial but official) role as a representative of the Queen (and eventually his father) and still allow M&H to travel and do their good work around the Commonwealth.

      Delete
    5. BP said it's speculation but that is not the same as ruling it out. Tom Bradby said that it's a well-known fact that they are looking to move to other places. So it's not like people are completely making this up. I mean, come on.

The Duke keeps everything close to the vest, but this could have been a scouting visit also. The other choice is Germany. Also, why establish the foundation if they are wavering on committing to the U.K. and Royal Family. In terms of security, they have that 24/7. They can’t stay with in any royal compound 24/7.
I hope they will focus on their family and expanding their charity work. They have got to rise above the noise and focus on the Good Work they can do. And that goes for you to Charlotte. Your good work and kindness is shining through. 2020 is yours to exceed. Thank You for a place of good.

  48. Addressing previous comments, yes I also think Meghan's face is fuller, and it looks wonderful on her, as well as her longer hair. She looks well-rested. However, is it me, or did anyone else notice what looks like perspiration stains under her right arm? Her left side is hidden by her hair.

  49. Nice to see Harry & Meagan happy and rested. The nice color comb of Meagan’s outfit look great on her. The MailOnline has a number of photos showed Meagan perspiration with a large half moon shape. If she wore a blazer the same color of her coat that would have solved that problem. She needs a Go to Advisor to help with outfits, blouses with creases, pants too long, dresses too tight, etc. for public functions. I hope someone on her staff reads these helpful suggestions for future events.🧡

Going back to their time in Canada, the couple they met in the woods mentioned two dogs. Also, very nicely mentioned a beagle and an undescribed dog, as I remember. I hope that they could indeed bring their doggies and it sounds like the undescribed second dog is remaining a "secret," which is good.

  57. Happy New Year to Charlotte and every one.

It was a matter of time. I predicted about three months ago including they will have a residence in NA, and work on becoming financially independent. My long comment included other points which expanded on the same theme, and that was probably why Charlotte did not post it.
The couple had posted they want to be financially independent and divide their time between UK and NA, while continuing to be in service to UK’s monarchy and The Commonwealth.
I used to cringe when their DM critics/haters used to throw stones at them with comments of “tax payers this and tax payers that” for expenses. I am relieved for them and wish them all the best. This also says their marriage and commitment is on solid ground. They look very happy here, especially Meghan.

  59. I am relieved for Meghan and Harry. Meghan has always been about enjoying health and happiness, and helping others to do the same. Harry has not enjoyed being a royal. I'm glad they are putting their own health and well-being ahead of duty that exposes them to constant bullying. They continue to be devoted to the crown and to helping, but hopefully taking away the cause of most of the criticism, even working to become financially independent. Good for them. I wish them every success in their endeavors, and in ending the constant persecution.

  61. Just saw the headlines, and I have to wonder exactly what stepping down means. I read that they can still keep their titles, and that PC will still support them from the Duchy funds. Also, they can keep Frogmore as it's a grace and favor home. They will continue to support HM. Do Harry and Meghan really think that the media will be less relentless if they step down? As long as M and H stay in the spotlight, the media will keep focus on them. We will just have to wait and see exactly what the plans are.

    2. I think this will just blow up more! They basically have just proven everybody right & now will be having their cake & eating it too. It would have been one thing if they had renounced their titles..... moving forward like Zara & Peter etc. But to keep the titles & "become financially independent"...... that's a zinger! They can't help but be seen as hypocritical if they keep their titles, any money from PC & then say they are independent!? Peter & Zara are supportive of The Queen & have no titles! I believe to fully achieve what they Say they want...... they should renounce their titles! Otherwise they can & will be accused of (& not improperly) using their names for money making purposes...... "Celebrity Royals" if you will.... I say.. Do it right or don't do it!

      Delete
    3. The media will go one of two ways. They will either ignore them because they don't do anything royal anymore, or they will be very hard on them for taking money and security for a job they no longer do. I don't think they can have their cake and eat it too. They need to go all one way or the other. You're either a member of the family and do all that is required or you become a private citizen with no titles, no funding, and no obligation. If they try to ride the fence on this one it's not going to end well.

    4. Hi Abby - I'm thinking this is a compromise which will allow them more control over their privacy, essentially - like they aren't beholden to Royal demands like new baby photocalls because the taxpayers aren't paying? They can go on vacation without it being a taxpayer issue? Well... Security though... Just thinking - op

Their next challenge is reconciling their financial independence and keeping the title. Even if they will master the ethics of avoiding conflict of interest, they will walk a fine line which may give the new tool for the tabloids to create, attack, and "control" stories. Life is a challenge at times. They chose what they want, and if they are happy with their decision, they will know how to live with their choice. From Meghan's aura on this post, she looks very happy, almost elated.

They carried out their public duties perfectly. They were hard working and always professional. I don’t see how things will change, the press will have more ammunition with them earning money from their royal titles. They are now going to be dipping in and out of Royal life and I really don’t how it’s going to work for them. Sinead

    3. I have so many thoughts about this, I honestly think they have made the decision far too quickly . They are a Royal couple for such short a time, they got engaged, married and had a baby in 2 years. I think they should have stayed for the sake of the Queen and then when Charles becomes King, then decided on their future. Harry was born a Prince and I think he will regret this decision. Meghan is a wonderful Duchess and she totally embraced the role, where do they go from here? They could have easily taken a slower pace with their duties, Meghan as a new mum had the perfect excuse. This all seems so dramatic and final . Did they need to make a statement at all? They could have given themselves the time to slow it all down. How do they make money and still carry out royal duties ? Sorry for the rambling!! Sinead

      Delete
    4. They remain royals, just not in the "royal rota" of hospital visits and plaque unveilings. They aren't resigning from the Firm at all. They specifically refer to supporting the Queen, and that does not mean wishing dear old Granny a happy day. It will involve work.
Criticism of their celebrity friends throwing showers for them, or lending them private jets has been singularly vituperative and pointed compared to other members of the family who enjoy lavish lifestyles and only hang out with other posh people. There's an ugly, xenophobic, bigoted reason for that. I don't blame them for wanting to escape the viper pit of court life. I applaud their plan to become financially independent and enjoy the freedom it will bring to them in future, under Charles's plans for a slimmed-down monarchy. They will continue to work their magic for good in the world; raising money for their new charity and comforting the less fortunate. This move certainly has the approval of the Crown, and their recent time off surely was a trial of the big plan. I see it as entirely positive and expect we will now and then see them on a balcony dutifully waving to crowds. Best of luck to it.

  64. From their engagement interview:
Interviewer: “In the case of your relationship, unlike for most people, there is this whole layer of what it means to get involved with someone from the royal family. How much of a sense did you have, Meghan, of the enormity of what you were getting into, what it might mean for your life?

Meghan: “I think I can very safely say, as naïve as it sounds now, having gone through this learning curve in the past year and a half, I did not have any understanding of just what it would be like. I don’t think either of us did. We both said that. Even though we knew that it would be…

Harry: “No…I tried to warn you. I tried to warn you as much as possible. But I think both of us were totally surprised by the reaction, after the first 5-6 months we had to ourselves, of what actually happened from then. So I think you can have as many conversations as you want and try and prepare as much as possible, but we were totally unprepared for what happened after that.

  65. Everyone deserves to be happy regardless of their station in life. If one can find a path to that end they should take every avenue available to them. I do believe Harry takes his responsibilities to the crown very seriously. I believe his work within the Commonwealth will continue as he and Meghan divide their time and commitments to better serve the projects of interest to them outside the scope of the royal connection. I am sure this decision was not taken lightly but in the end will prove to be a very valuable one for all concerned. I am truly happy for them and wish them great peace of mind and spirit.

  66. What is going on with the breaking news?! They are to step down and now there some reports out there where the Queen did not give her consent. I don’t know how much validity there is about this. I know there are others royals from other countries who have moved to the US in order to have their kids have normal lives. I don’t know anything about those two and the talks they have had naturally but I have to ask, would this even be a thought for Harry if he were with someone from the UK? I don’t know but I just hope however this all transpires that they are happy and safe. I want the best for them in all aspects. I just never depict Harry “stepping down” as a senior royal. What I hear in your comment and others like it is (How dare they!) “ want the best of both worlds”.
All of us want our best life. Harry and Meghan have the option to transition out of monarchy as William’s children begin their royal duties in a decade or so. They are independently wealthy now. They envision a new role that Charles might heartily endorse one day. I bet in her darkest moments the Duchess of Cambridge will envy their new role.

  68. I think the latest news about the Sussexes makes so much sense in light of the times and the changing attitudes toward the royal family. We truly do not know if Britain will keep its royal family as is after the death of the Queen. Charles, who has been remarkably prescient, seems to have encouraged his sons to develop interests outside of their royal duties while they were still young men, and I don't doubt that he had an eye on the possibility that they would need to become self-sustaining private citizens one day. It seems much, much wiser for Harry to take that step now instead of waiting and becoming like Andrew or Edward, having to make a transition after a career-long time of being supported. I do not believe that this means the family AS a family is breaking up. I believe they will support one another in very different roles and paths and will find a way to stay close.

Having just read the post on the Sussex Royal instagram page, I’m still shocked at the announcement! The first headlines I saw in my newsfeed I assumed were fake! And the Palace had said it wouldn’t comment on speculation! I wonder if the Sussex’s did the post sooner than planned to try to control the narrative. In the short term the press hounding and negativity will increase but hopefully in the long term Harry and Meagan will be able to find peace! They state they have been discussing this for some time the Queen and family - it has to be difficult for all involved to work out such a different role for them! I see the Queen being slow and steady in making decisions and changes but as we saw with Andrew’s situation, Charles and probably William move quicker. Harry certainly has never wasted time when doing things in his life and thus today’s announcement! For their sake, I hope it works out!

  72. I don't know them, so can't say for sure, but I really feel they bit off too much too fast. Who among us could emigrate, plan a giant wedding and get married, start a new position, renovate and have a baby in this short a time without feeling exhausted and frazzled -- LET ALONE in the spotlight. I just can't help wishing they hadn't reacted in such a crucible, with such a major decision. When I had a few-month-old baby and just back to work, I was in no place to make life-changing decisions like this. I wish women would give themselves a break for longer and don't think she did. Becoming a mother is so much. I wish they had decided to take some time in retreat to Wales like K & W did or something like that. Please all moms -- take some time to get your balance back. 2. Well, we all have our own opinion. This said we don't have all information in hand. The press around the world is famous to distort the facts as they seem fit. There are many people who does what they did in ever shorter time. Is that the problem? Not the harsh racisim against Meghan ? The continuous bullying ? Everything she has done came with a positive then a but article. We are all imperfect including those who constantly criticise why do peole expect them to be perfect ? Why wouldn't they allow to have poor judgement or make mistakes like some people ? Why would they be burned for all that ? British media thought they have the right to do that because they were tax funded. Super now that they will be financially independant and that is what make them furious today. They won't be able to gide their racisim and nastiest. I hope it perfectly work for them.

  73. OK, the good news is that they can do things like resurrect The Tig and go on TV without being criticized. Maybe we'll see more of them during "unroyal" things! Maybe Meghan can still wear expensive clothes! It's too bad, though, that the "working" RF will be so slim now. Just K&W and C&C? It cuts out a lot of nonceremonial activities. Such uncertainty! First the palace says nonsense then this comes out from H&K. Can't wait for Charlotte to start guiding us through the swamp of news and non-news.

  74. It is a very interesting and courageous choice. We do not really know the palace ways and what it feels like to be a senior royal in the second row. I have observed a change in Harry when he fell in love with Meghan. He looked at himself differently. He started with therapy and he was able to look at his past and his mother’s legacy. I feel it was no real fulfilment for him to work in support of William especially when that means a life of comparison and being the second. Also loyalty is not a one way street and I missed Williams loyalty for Harry sometimes even before Harry married. William did not mind that he was presented as the smart one while Harry had the other image. It was not really the truth about how they are and what they both individually achieved. I think Harry deserves and wants a different kind of acknowledgement. For him this might be easier if he leaves certain conditions. They can act and speak more freely. Now they can shape their life and do not depend on the decisions of future monarchs for them. From this they can maybe do better for the crown. I wish them all the best.

I really hope that people actually go to their new website ( linked from their instagram post ) and read it. All of it. Go to the funding and media pages on that link for all kinds of answers to the questions/rumours that are gearing up. No, they are not quitting the Royal Family. No, they are not moving right away, not yet. Yes, Frogmore is still going to be their UK home. The Queen owns it and it was NOT reno'd with tax payers money. I am so glad that they are going to be able to have a full, productive life, with some independence and still support the Monarchy, as other members do. We all saw how Princess Margarets life turned out...now that the Duke of Sussex is not the "spare", and Prince Charles has already spoken about streamlining the "senior" Royals, the Duke is following a natural progression of that.

  76. Look. Let's take a step back and breath, ok? Whatever form this next chapter of their lives take, the Royal Family as an institution will be fine. Meghan and Harry have the means - not only financial - to have good and meaningful lives, investing on causes they consider important. Personally, I wouldn't put all responsibility for this decision on the media coverage, I think it's simpler than that: Harry has never been fond of the public aspects of his life and has married a woman with a similar love for privacy and connections with other parts of the world. And if there's a trace of selfishness in this choice - and I believe there is - so be it, people can be selfish. They have a right to their choices, they don't exist to entertain, distract or improve us. I wish them the best.

While I totally agree that they should be able to step down from their duties as senior royals and be financially independent, I don't know that they should be able to keep their titles. I think the right thing to do would be to renounce them, and perhaps they will in the future. Also, we don't know the behind-the-scenes details but it very much appears that the Palace was taken aback by the announcement and I do think if that's true, that was not the right approach. It's very early on and I will wait for all the facts but I think overall it's a bold move but obviously one they feel strongly about. It's too bad that they didn't get the support they needed to continue on with the family. Regardless, I think they will have a big impact in their future charitable endeavors. After all Harry is the grandson of the current monarch, son of,brother of and uncle of future monarchs.Having said that if it is true that they never shared this with HM before making the announcement, I am disappointed in them. To me this would have been a common courtesy and I am sorry to say seem to show some disrespect.

    2. I would not assume they did not get support.

    3. I guess to me it feels like a conflict of interest to have a title but also be able to use it for financial gain. Either way, I am happy for them. I’m over the BRF and will not be sad to quit following them. Will gladly continue to follow H&M though :)

  81. Hello Charlotte,
My guess is you are giving today's announcement careful thought before posting anything here, but I do hope you know that I'd be greatly interested in reading your thoughts should you choose to share them. I've formed some of my own, but appreciate how this community helps me engage more deeply with the history, activity, and social dynamics in a much more considered way.

I also wish them all the best and if they feel that the pressures of royal life are too heavy they need to pull back for their own mental well being. However I find it difficult to see how they will be able to continue to have a role in the wider Commonwealth in the future. It is only because Prince Harry is the Queen's grandson and sixth in line that he and Meghan were given their Commonwealth liaison role. If they are no longer senior royals and presumably not carrying out formal events like royal visits and attendance at official Commonwealth functions in UK, it may be necessary for another royal representative to replace them on occasions. Even if a way is found to overcome this problem, like all of the Royal family, when they are invited to visit the older Commonwealth Realms, the host country pays their in country costs including their additional security. If they visit in future are they now going to cover all these costs themselves or accept private hospitality and/or sponsorship as they seem to have done in Canada? I can see all sorts of difficulties with this. The Duchess of York has had ongoing issues with similar arrangements. This is one of the reasons commercial involvement complicates matters. I am sure royal officials are pointing this out to them. I am apprehensive about how this is going to work out in practice.

    1. US presidents, for example, generally pay private expenses for family members who tag along on official visits. Vile British tabloids want us to believe Meghan is a grifter and that the beleaguered British citizens fund a lavish lifestyle for her. It’s not true. It’s also not the feckless Fergie. They are still working royals like the Wessexes and the Princess Royal. Whatever makes you think they are about to engage in “ commercial involvement”? They said nothing of the sort. They’re both millionaires. Harry won’t need to sell used cars to support his family. Meghan won’t return to acting. The Duchess of York is a poor comparison to these hard-working young people who are using their celebrity to do good in the world. That won’t change.

I tried to submit a comment yesterday but I’m not sure if I did it correctly. Apologies!

Re: her Canada House ensemble, I am a huge fan of the monochromatic looks! They are so luxe and allow the different textures to really stand out.

Re: the announcement, I’m really surprised and don’t know what to think yet. Two things I am sure of: I hope this decision gives them greater peace and happiness in their little family. I have a son not much younger than Archie and I can’t imagine dealing with what Meghan has been put through these two years. Pregnancy can be such a scary, vulnerable time, and postpartum is exhausting in its own way. I really couldn’t have handled the extra stress. Secondly, I hope there will still be plenty of public appearances and content for this blog. I love reading it!

  84. I don't think this is going to really change anything from the public/media perspective. They are still going to be in spotlight because there is public interest. Just like now, some people will love them and other will hate on them. I don't think keeping their titles is a good image if they are using their title/status to make money -- paid speaking engagements, selling merchandise, etc. The last six weeks were probably busy for them as they planned all this out. It does not look like they consulted with HM. Should be an interesting next few months.

    Hope from USA

  85. The Queen, POW, and DOC have made it plain the line of succession. Harry and Meghan do not want to become the Kent’s, Gloucester’s, Wessexes living off the largesse of whoever the Monarch is. They want a legacy for their children. The courtiers had already leaked the story to the Sun. Their website shows this has been developing for months although the Royals are shocked (not). William will inherit the Duchy, he won’t continue to fund the Sussex family, Charles does not fund his siblings. Harry’s inheritance will not last forever. They have goals and charities they want to fund and support. I’m saddened by this news, but I have faith that the Sussexes know what they are doing. Charlotte I don’t know if this ends your blog, but I so enjoyed your work. Thank you

  86. This decision was ill-conceived. The Queen has dealt with the pressure and the stress for 70 years. They’ve dealt with it for what—a couple of years? I am seriously disappointed with the both of them...and I have always defended them. AND doing it by blindsiding Harry’s family? No. Just no. No sympathy from me for this selfish decision. Does no one understand duty anymore? Sad day.

    2. I think you’re assuming that what you have read in the tabloids is true. These of course, are the same tabloids that have printed many lies and half truths in the past and still continue to, even when they are corrected. I honestly do not believe senior members of the RF had no idea - in their statement, they explained that there had been internal discussions - this may have been with other members of the RF? I just think we need to stop the media outrage at everything this couple say and do. I urge everyone to go to the new Sussexroyal.com website and have a read through what their plans are for the future. It’s also interesting to read about how they are ‘funded’ as this puts to bed the whole ‘tax payers money’ argument that’s normally thrown at them and other members of the RF

  88. I'm glad this is the "pro-Meghan" site! Gee. So many questions, and I think the situation will take many turns. Who knows why it was not decided upon before a Sussex Instagram announcement. It should have been worked out to the T and then given in detail to the public. This way, it seems like no one else knew about it. However, I am unwaveringly loyal to Meghan. I go back to Meghan wanting to make sure her two guys were OK -- we got that from our favorite "leaker." I think this is all for Harry's mental health, and that was why I originally cared about him. And Harry was born a little Prince and I expect him to die prince. I doubt Meghan cares much about the title, but it should not be taken away from Harry. So complicated -- he has had such an emotional life including being just a spare, yet William has such a great burden, too.

Remember just a few years ago that William asked the Queen if he had to invite the usual group to his wedding and she said to just do what you like. I like to think that after Diana, there is a concern to ensure these two princes have long and happy lives.

  89. Happy New Year Charlotte. I spent this week reading both blogs and now am all caught up. Thanks for providing such fun and informative read.

I’m not surprised by the news of M&H pulling back. Looking back at the past year and a half, M&H gave it their all. Yet they were criticized relentlessly no matter what they did.

Harry and Meghan, as individuals, are successful in their own right. Meghan did it without the legacy of birthright advantage. Harry, before Meghan, was one of the most popular royals, next to QE2. His role as the much loved royal wingman to W&K could have continued as the proverbial jovial unmarried, neutered uncle. But alas, he rocked the boat and chose a made woman- a biracial, outspoken woman with a successful career, and already immersed in the philanthropic world, long before she met Harry.

The Windsors weren’t really ready for Meghan because she wasn’t just a token diversity photo-op moment. The UK presently is a country in turmoil. It may no longer be the United Kingdom. Its identity in crisis. Its economy in chaos. For the British media, Meghan was clearly no English Rose. She isn’t one of them proclaimed the many royal commentators.

The biggest tell was how Andrew was treated and allowed so much leeway despite decades of questionable and dodgy dealings. The palace, the home office, and the British media looked the other way for so, so long. Meghan shows up wearing a one shoulder dress, sporting dark nail polish and eating avocado toast and boom- she’s a gaffe, a porn star, an uppity parasite, a hypocrite..... Evidently she didn’t give birth to Archie either. It was all a hoax. For the British media and the courtiers, Meghan’s actions are far worse than Andrew’s.

It’s clear M&H have had to sort it out on their own. Charles is struggling with poll numbers and needs to up his likability. He’s can’t be attached to controversies at this juncture. The tabloids have already pushed William & Kate as the ones to succeed QE2. The palace intrigue abounds. It’s no wonder in this cutthroat gilded cage, with courtiers vying for power and tabloids on the hunt for daily gossips, the royals have tagged M&H to be hunted. It’s a necessary to sacrifice a few for the survivability of the rest.

In their future roles, M&H can step in like Princess Anne and other lesser royals. M&H have their official usefulness, particular as a nod to multiculturalism and the Commonwealth. I think it’s better this way. It’s important that W&K feel secure in their popularity and C& C sorted out. The focus needs to be on these four. And the survivability of the monarchy post Brexit and post QE2.

  90. I quite hope that this development will evolve into a context that serves the Sussexes and their family, and thereby allows them to continue serving the Good, as they have so amply done already. They are authentic souls who genuinely want to use their platform for good -- that said, while their 'platform' is now radically changing shape, they will always be public figures, and stepping back as 'senior' royals (emphasis via the quotation marks from the Sussexes themselves via their Insta post) is unlikely to change that. I am rooting for Meghan and Harry, now and always. Wonderful things are ahead for them, though now in quite a different form.

  91. This is Diana 2.0..... think back to December 1993 when she publicly announced she was stepping down from her role and the media spotlight. It was an ill-advised plan and one that didn’t stick. Diana was so high profile and needed the attention of the public that she claimed to have been distressed by, yet there is plenty of evidence that she sought out media contacts and cultivated relationships with journalists, including leaking stories and using the media to suit her own needs.

Harry seems to be permanently damaged by her traumatic death - and who can blame him - yet, he hasn’t learned from the lessons of her life in terms of the hand she had in placing herself in risky circumstances with the media. Harry is thinking with his emotions and carrying the scars from his past on his chest for all to see.

Good luck to Harry and his family. It will be interesting to see how this plays out over what will most likely be a long time on the outside of a large, coveted, and national institution which will be overseen by his father, his brother and then his nephew. He may live to regret this rather impetuous course of action and alienating those who are, above all, his family.

    1. Interesting connection to Diana. I hadn't thought that deeply about it but think you are right. He experienced major trauma not only in her death but in her life of being harassed by the media. Why would he allow his wife and child to repeat that horrendous treatment? I would have a short fuse with this and make the same decision. It's a shame but its clear the media wont stop.

I agree with Lacy in LA and other commenters that I look forward to reading whatever you have to say on the Sussex announcement, whenever you are ready to publish your views. I really appreciate your integrity and all your work to provide balanced, informative posts. I have come to deeply appreciate the Sussexes, largely thanks to this blog.

  94. I think that one of the main reasons that they did it was to get away from the Royal Rota. The Royal Rota includes the Daily Mail which continually trashes Meghan, publishes false stories and has paid Meghan's father for stories.

On their new website, under Media, they specifically state that they will no longer be participating in the Royal Rota system. They go on to state that the Royal Correspondents are misconstrued around the world to be credible sources. Also, stories that have been filed accurately by Royal Correspondents are often edited or rewritten by media editorial teams to present false impressions.

Their new roles gives them a way to get away from having to provide stories to the Royal Rota, some of who go on to attack them.

    Their new website is https://sussexroyal.com/media/

  96. Dear Charlotte,

I am Silvia from Portugal and I follow both your blogues: HRH Duchess of Cambridge and this one, for several years.

Firstly, I hope and like me I believe many other followers, that you do not stop sourcing this blog with valuable, serious information and details about HRH Duchess
    of Sussex.

Getting to the matter now, no one, absolutely no one can be indifferent about this decision that H&M made as a couple.

Above all because they are a bleeze of change not only for the Monarchy in UK itself, but also for the world.

At first I was and still very said for two distinct reasons:

    The felling that they have just quited, like throw the towel into the floor;

The extent into how deeply hard and painful it has been for them so that they decided to take this step.

Being very raw and real H&M have been treated in a very selvatic and disturbing way from several branches of the society not only UK but also world wide.

It must be really suffocating to know that you always delivery your best yourself and that your best yourself is never good enough.

One of my first thoughts was a person that is ill cannot just quite of being ill, or, a person that is born extemely por cannot quite in living just because it is poor.

One has to be resilient and fight, one has to survive more times maybe than living fully, but this is life.

At the same time I belive that they are going to still be doing many great things for the humanity and with time, after the water flows several times under the bridge the bonanza will prevail once more.

We all have our challenges within our family, our professional life, within ourselves, the difference is that our life is not a media headlines and most importantly is not a source of revenue for anyone.

So lets poor a cup of tea, seat confortable and see what the future will bring for this family of three and to the Royal Familly.

In the meantime I will follow this matter with your Charelotte.

  97. Anna, your comment from 12:15 pm today has disappeared. Its shows on my cell, however, on my computer it does not. I wanted to respond to your comment to say I echo 100% of everything you wrote.
My first thought when I heard this news was of HM. This is the last thing she needs at her age. She has enough stress with Prince Philip, Andrew and now this. Shameful! I have not read all that is out there and it seems like there is ALOT, but I can see why the Royal Family is upset to put it mildly. As it has been said, Prince Charles will be streamlining the monarchy when he reigns, so H&M's 'new progressive path' would have been a more appropriate time/place for all this to happen. Granted, we do not know when PC will reign, and surely H&M could have continued to conduct themselves as Royals in the manner they have been doing for 'short term'.
I sensed there was more to their 'break' - over the holidays and with Prince Philip's hospitalization, that they weren't around the Royal family, and it now appears they have been quite busy over their break putting all of this into fast track motion. I, too, believe that Harry will deeply regret this time. I fear the damage has been done with the family (William in particular), and the relationship may never be truly fixed. Its just very sad.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I honestly think that this is what Harry has wanted all along- to be able to get out from under the royal umbrella. I think it has never meshed with the way he wants to live his life. Now is his chance to be free of all the pomp and circumstance and the never ending photographers and tabloid fodder. I hope it works for him. However, the money part of it seems like a problem. He would be wise to become 100% financially independent as soon as possible. Then the other big dilemma, as I see it, is how to determine exactly what and how many “royal appearance” he will continue to make. That’s a very gray area. Truthfully, after the fascination with the two of them diminishes, and it will, I have a feeling they will miss being the center of attention.

  99. HarpersBazaar.com printed an article today that explains Harry & Meghan's decision in a non sensational and clearly understandable format. Prince Harry inherited 10 million dollars from Princess Diana & receives $450,000 annual dividends from this.(Forbes.com) He is supposedly worth around 40 million total. (Cosmopolitan.com) Meghan has her own money as well. (about 7 million). So, they can easily become financially independent. As long as the palace still provides adequate security for them, the Sussex family will be fine.

  100. I am appalled at the way in which Her Majesty the Queen, was treated with total disregard and such lack of respect re: the method of delivery/ notification of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex future plans. Extremely disappointing, in both of them but especially the Duke. Thinking back to the way the Duchess of Cornwell was treated for years, especially after the Princess of Wales passed away. She carried herself with dignity no matter the circumstance. What comes to mind, is Camilla being pelted with bread rolls/ bread outside a shop, back in the day. One tough lady. She has risen about it all, a marvellous partner to Prince Charles and wonderful representative of Her Majesty.

  101. I'm honestly curious what others think. It seems like this is the second time they felt pressure from the press to release information before they were ready: their plans to carve out different roles & the S. Africa documentary that saw them explaining their side of the story before the information came out about suing the papers. Both instances felt rushed and now misinformation is flowing.

I'm not sure I understand the problem if the Sun had published all of this leaked information, and H & M/RF chose not to comment until they were ready with plans in place? To me it seems like if they could present everything when they were ready and prepared in both instances it would cause less confusion? If the newspapers say things like, "They are moving to Africa, Canada, wherever..." I don't really believe them until the palace actually confirms. Maybe someone else can help me understand why they felt they needed to release this now?

Sorry if this is obvious and I just don't get it!
    -Sue

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
