Meghan Starts A New Chapter With Vancouver Women's Centre Visit

We saw a new chapter in Meghan's life begin yesterday when she privately visited the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre in Vancouver. The organisation shared the photo below afterwards with the caption: “Look who we had tea with today. The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, visited us today to discuss issues affecting women in the community.”

Established in 1978, DEWC is described as "one of the few safe spaces" within the Downtown Eastside neighbourhood for self-identified women and their children. The area is known across Canada for its "disproportionate levels of poverty and extreme marginalization." It's home to some of the most vulnerable including homeless, those suffering with addiction and mental health issues. In the face of so many challenges, Downtown Eastside is also known for its community activism in the face of enormous stigma. The organisation provides over 500 women and children with meals, essentials and the support they need every single day.

The statistics outline the stark reality for women.

More on Meghan's visit from CBC:

'Meghan asked about the work done at the centre and what can be done to make life safer for women in the neighbourhood, said Kate Gibson, the centre's acting director. "She was just casual and lovely," Gibson said. "She just wants to get to know the community. We know she's going to come to Canada and I think possibly the West Coast. "I think that she just doesn't want to be sort of a stranger in the midst. She just wants to get to know people."
Gibson said she had a great conversation with Meghan, and it was a welcome opportunity for the women working on the front lines to share stories about their work in the community. "I thought she was really down to earth," Gibson said. "She's very good at sort of picking up something from the conversation and expanding that a bit, and asking questions and [was] empathetic. She was really great."

Meghan's assistant emailed Ms Gibson to arrange the visit and revealed she is hoping to visit a number of charities supporting women in Canada.

Before Meghan's charity visit, she was photographed boarding a float plane in Victoria's Inner Harbour. It marked the first time Meghan had been seen publicly since she returned to the country last Thursday.

Suits fans will recognise the piece from Rachel Zane's wardrobe.

The talented Susan from What Meghan Wore suggests Meghan sported her DL1961 Emma Power Leggings in Albany. They are available at ShopBop.

In the photos of Meghan boarding a seaplane, she wore a trusty green Barbour jacket she's had for years. The piece has been sold out for some time. She also carried her Cuyana Classic Structured Leather Tote. The $195 bag is available in multiple colours.

Harry has an engagement in London tomorrow. From there, he is expected to join his family on Vancouver Island. We expect to hear an announcement on plans for the future by the end of the week.

    1. You said that right. She just can't help looking for ways to make a difference. It's like second nature to her and part of her very nature. Not criticizing other royals just making a distinction about Meghan... Often others just visit a charity making a difference by allowing the place to be publicized. Meghan gets involved with charities finding ways to make the maximum impact. She seems to have a keen eye for identifying tangible ways to make big things happen (cookbook, clothing sale...). I wonder if her role as full-time royal wouldn't have allowed her to flourish and do this to the best of her ability?? No slight on others but Wow! I'm so impressed with how she makes things happen. I'm trying to mimic in my small corner of the world;).

    2. That's an all too common reaction to amazing, creative women who show up and shine no matter what they do or how casually and humbly they do it. Many others whether famous or not have dealt with it too (including yours truly). The perception remains that it's a stunt, it's calculated, it's designed for PR, it's attention-seeking and all the rest of what has been thrown at Meghan since the beginning of her journey.

Her profession as an actress also works to demean her in many eyes. Why that should be the case always puzzles me. Why can't people celebrate those who show up for others this way? Why does it always come down to shade and put downs in response to their gifts and their joyful contribution to the world? Be sad if you choose, 12:30. I watch her rise above all that has been thrown her way and my heart swells with joy!

In Her speeches she passionately advocates for underserved people. You can’t make this up.

    4. You are entitled to your opinion. I feel like this is Meghan wanting to continue to help others. Her haters have seen whatever she does as pr stunt and think she is responsible for all the articles about her.
Meghan has always wanted to help. All you have to do is listen to those she helped during Tig days, UN days, One World, or other ways she continues to help women young girls and communities.

    5. Everything that anyone does (including you or I) is calculated, from what we choose to wear to work to the way that we communicate with other people. I don't understand the implicit negativity when people talk about "calculating" behavior. That just means that they've thought things through and planned ahead. If they planned thing like their responses in the documentary, so what? It's important to lay a solid groundwork for a monumental change. PR doesn't have to be evil, it's simply the way a person crafts their image and communicates their perspective to the outside world, which every one of us does in our own small ways every single day.

If the question is about Meghan's motivations and whether she really cares about this visit to the women's center, I'd say her motivations are pretty clear based on her history. She has been fighting for women since she was 11 years old campaigning to have a sexist commercial changed, which she obviously didn't do for good PR. So I think it is really unfair to doubt her motivations now.

      Delete
    6. What i have always found worse in Meghan case is that her more aggressive critics are women. Anon and monique yiu are free to have your opinion but at time give a little credit to a almsot 40 years old woman who has been fighting against sexism when she was just 11 or 13 years old. Meghan is not perfect as all of us and we can make effort to be factual to recognize one os doing something admirable in the hope thqt tomorrow others can develop same attitide towards us.

      Delete
    7. I am not sad at all. This is nothing new as she has always supported women. I am glad Meghan is still herself considering what the British media has thrown at her. Remember that even Princess Diana who came from a noble family had a hard time dealing with it all; she suffered from depression and bulimia according to reports. For those of us who followed Meghan before becoming a Duchess, we know that she was not only an actress before she married Prince Harry. She was also a college graduate who worked for the UN. She started campaingning for women when only a child: about a tv commercial that was sexist. If doubters would take time to read Charlotte's reports they will discover that Meghan has always looked to make a difference; it's her passion. I do not understand that mostly women have been the worse critics about anything Meghan related... now that is truly sad!

    8. I think at the heart of all this drama is that Meghan cares very deeply what public opinion is of her. This past week has been emotional for all involved and I am sure Meghan has lost some support and trust from people who believed in her. There needs to be some damage control to the negativity and while this may seem like PR, she will have to to continue to do show and prove in order to regain the trust. For those who have always believed in her and are her most ardent fans its not hard to believe that this is just Meghan being Meghan, but for a large majority this isn't going to feel genuine until she proves that it is. Time is what it will take to heal.

  9. I feel like this outfit is sending a message. She's recycling an outfit from Suits. Effectively closing the door on the "princess' chapter of her life and going back to the old Meghan. But to keep this limited to fashion, I love this outfit. Love the sweater, jeans, and boots. Such casual chic.

I can see where you're coming from, but I don't think she's fully closing the door on the "princess" aspect of her life. That is, unless the result of the meetings with the Queen is that they lose their titles and won't be allowed to carry out *any* royal engagements. I'd really be sad if that happened, especially because I don't think Meghan does want to full return to her old life....I think she and Harry enjoy working on behalf of the Queen but hate the treatment they've received, you know? I guess we'll see by the end of this week, one way or the other.

    2. You are absolutely correct; and yet, my first thought was it's a casual Kate look too. Skinny bottoms and boots. As long as she is doing the good work, I am for it.

      Delete
    3. That is a interesting idea. I was introduced to her through Suits and some interviews and it always sounded as if Rachel’s wardrobe wasn’t exactly her private taste. And I would agree. Her Suits character dressed more like her better (in my opinion but I absolutely loved Rachel’s fashion) royal outfits (the red Hugo Boss Skirt and jumper for example).
But your interpretation definitely has something to it and I agree that we will definitely see more Meghan pre-royal outfits now.

    4. Could be wearing that to send a message. Could also be that it's really cold there so she has her Canada clothes to stay warm.

      Delete
    5. What I find interesting is that these seem to be "old" Canada clothes that we never saw her wearing in the UK. So maybe she left a lot of her belongings in Canada? Why would you do that if you were moving to your husband's country to start a new life, unless, of course, you planned all along to return?

      Delete
    6. I loved Rachel's Suits fashions. The pencil skirts and fitted tops showed off her curvy hourglass shape. As a royal I felt like she tried out a bunch of fashions which sometimes looked good and sometimes didn't. But this look is so not princess. Shes not evdn wearing her favorite stilettos.

      Delete
    7. Anonymous at 01:23 why make that assumption? You really don't think we saw her wear every piece in her entire wardrobe do you? Just because she was never photographed wearing this since she's been a public figure doesn't mean she left it in Canada.

      Melinda

      Delete
    8. Probably Meghan felt pressure to wear new clothes, or at least clothes that the public had not seen before, when in the UK. She may have wore other items on her off days, but we couldn't see that other than some prewedding shopping trips. Those days seem so long ago. :) Kinda doubt she stored clothes, planning a 2-year return.

      Delete
    9. Saw Keir Simmons who is now in Canada and he was saying it is perishing cold in Canada. So as Meghan has previously lived in Canada I would presume that she would know what to pack and take with her when she left the UK.
But as always Meghan barely breathe without being slated. I can’t imagine how one can immediately make the negative leap...

I am glad to see her back to what she did so well since she got into the BRF , and continue what she has started 20 months ago , getting over all difficulties, sorrow and unfairness .
I reckon I have been surprised by her leaving England so quickly , Harry and her must have been planning all that since long ... let’s hope all private matters about this difficult time will remain private , or if it has to be known, that it will not be leaked but told by honest persons .
Happy to see her back , hope to see Harry soon , and baby Archie , they will probably release a photo from time to time , which is a good way of having those who like them happy without having problems with the press .

There’s something else different about this photo because I’m assuming it was taken by a regular person who was there rather than one of the British rota press, so it’s not an unflattering shot, which was often the case.

    1. Oh, I think Royal life was quite for her. She's no stranger to difficulty and high pressure. She can step up and step out and connect with others brilliantly. Filming a series like Suits is no cake walk and she kept her hand in many other ventures which many have already mentioned on this thread at the same time. Let's not forget that she gave up everything of her own in order to take it on. She only assumed incorrectly that it would be appreciated and given fair consideration.

What didn't suit her or Harry (and shouldn't suit anyone) was the relentless hazing, malice, false reports passed off as news from the press, the internet trolls and the warring camps of Kate vs Meghan fans.

Very interesting that one of the most vile of those against her is an old, white man who goes on and on and on because Meghan "ghosted" him. Well, he's revealed his true character and obvious reasons for her to avoid him (in addition to Harry and Royal advisors very likely warning her off).

Even Arthur Edwards who is one of the most benign and liked of the royal photographers was grousing about their wish to dump the Rota system. Of course, he wouldn't admit that this "traditional" approach is an archaic hold over from about 100 years ago in a non-media age and is a real threat to his ability to continue to make a living off H&M. What if the other Royals decided it was a good time to end the Rota system? There goes photographer's and their papers' guaranteed turn on Parasites R Us option.

There are so many nuanced and complicated aspects to H&M's desire to live and work differently than they have been able to do in the past 20 months. However, this visit indicates that championing the causes close to their hearts won't change whatever decisions and subsequent changes are made.

Actually, I think it good that this transition should and will occur while the Queen is still at the family helm. Much better than if it should have come with Charles or William's ascent.

    2. Just one thought about the Rota system. If I heard correctly on Omid Scobie's podcast with Chris Ship, there are different parts of the rotation, not just 'print' press. Arthur Edwards is a photographer. Unless I'm missing something, I think having a rotation of photographers where those present share pictures with the other papers is a positive. I think it is the British press that does the Rota, but there are obviously other agencies/countries represented and that is why there are so many photographers at all of these events. Otherwise there would be even more photographers than there are now! Not sure if that makes sense or if I am misunderstanding?

But I do believe that there has to be some way of holding the print press accountable to having ethics in what they report. Some of the articles are just absurd!

    3. Well said SMH! It's great that she continues her efforts where they will most likely be way more appreciated. In England she just couldnt do anything right and that has nothing to do with being made for royal life or not but with the circumstances she had to face. Nobody could have dealt with that.
      Anna

      Delete
    4. @ 03:52 On the rota system, if H&M choose to release a photo of (say) Archie which they have taken, they have to give that photo to whichever paper is in line on the rota at that time for its use. That can be one of the very papers which relentlessly slags and maligns them. Who would want to be tied to that? It's not merely a system by which papers and photographers take their turn. And let's not forget that papers taking those turns are ones which are routinely publishing false and malicious stories about them. They don't get to choose to work with papers who are being fair in their coverage.
      SMH

    5. Aren't you picking the wrong battle? The rota system allows all media to have access to facts and pictures of public engagements. Which surely is a democratic and healthy thing? What some papers write about those facts and pictures is another problem. I
suppose that this blog also depends on the news and pictures brought by the royal reporters and photographs from the rota system.

  19. Just another thought from the Queen's announcement. She called them by their first names, which was to show closeness, and then she referred to them as the Sussexes. I doubt she would have used that name if she planned to take away their titles -- without the Duke and Duchess, they would not be the Sussexes.

  22. More thoughts. I think the "situation" may be fluid. I am reading between the lines that the Christmas gathering is not stress-free. Hoping that the Queen is around for another 10 years, this gives H&M time to be comfortable, raise their family, and avoid some situations. When Charles is king, I imagine there will not be a huge family gathering. All the cousins and their children will probably stick to Andrew, Edward, Anne, or Charles. I can definitely see K&W&kids and H&M&kid(s) spending Christmas with C&C, taking into account that Doria should be visited and that Camilla has her family to see and that Kate likes to see her family.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Am I the only person annoyed that she is still called Meghan Markle? Even when H&M step somewhat back and even if they should give up their titles, for me she is still Meghan Windsor. Unless she wanted to keep her name explicitly, then I'll shut up of course. And I'm aware that for some people the Duchess of Cambridge will always be Kate Middleton which I dislike as well.

No Nora, you aren't the only one. It really ticks me off when any of these women, Camilla, Catherine ( her name is not Kate! ) or Meghan, constantly have their previous names used by the media. And that's where it starts. It's just another way that the media use to drag their names through whichever scandal or gossip happens to be the flavour of the week. I am so happy that the Duke and Duchess will be calling our fair province partly home for awhile. The fact that she is still "working" for her causes by visiting the Downtown Eastside Womens Centre and bringing attention to a very worthy cause, shows her devotion and "duty" to the Commonwealth and the Queen. FYI: The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, where Meghan visited yesterday, is based in a neighbourhood “known as ground zero for violence against Indigenous women and girls” and last year shared a report called Red Women Rising: Indigenous Women Survivors in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, “based on the lived experience, leadership, and expertise of Indigenous survivors. This comprehensive report is the culmination of a participatory process with 113 Indigenous women and 15 non-Indigenous women regarding the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. - via Lainey Gossip

I honestly don't know what to write because I don't know how people can sort humans into different categories, some worthy of respect and kindness and some not. I'm not saying I'm perfect, but I try to enjoy differences between people. After all the terrible reports, maybe our girl Meghan can help some. She seems to have a magic knack of knowing what can help and going for it.

  35. To Deanne from Canada,
Thank you for this additional info on the DEWC.
The terrible violence against indigenous women in North America is an excellent cause for Meghan to address. I remember how moved she was by the violence against women in SAfrica.

  36. I have significant misgivings over Harry and Meghan's recent decision but it can't be denied that Meghan genuinely wishes to do good work in the world... and Vancouver's Downtown Eastside is a profoundly needy place. I'm sure it was a surprising and encouraging gift for those who were present at this visit, to have her support.

    1. Thanks to british tabloid who are planting their seed of lies. The details have even been disclosed but they are campaining already to make Canada a hell for Meghan and Harry. I hope that all this situation finally expose them to the level where some pundits or so called experts will completely loose their credibility. Then start to feel that the british public may now loose interest in MH of they are no more public fund so they try to deport that anguish and frustration in Canada. What a shame. I still can believe that there are some people who cannot sleep if they don't insult them or create lies around their single action and word. I wish the royal family can change the media in the rota and set up new rules. What a dream.

    2. Anonymous at 21:45 . As a Canadian I can tell you that what I am hearing from most of the people that I have talked to about this (it is a passing topic in the office) the view seems to be that we would welcome them like we would any immigrant but we don't want to have to carry the cost for their security or in any other way support them financially. And the British tabloids had nothing to do with that sentiment. But I suspect you are right that the British tabloids will follow them here and continue to print negative articles. I don't think escaping the British tabloids is going to be as easy as moving countries. Let's hope they win this lawsuit.

  38. Very interesting pannel on CNN tonight moderated by Christiane Amanpour. Offers some rather refreshing perspectives about the British press and their motivations. And the part that surprised me was that Harry’s plan (which Charles and William demanded) was leaked by someone who they now believe they know (as it was one of just three people who could have done it). Usually I am very angry when my husband watches CNN, but tonight I am glad he did.

    2. Lucy I did not see but language is tricky. I am not assuming you meant anything but an example is In your post you say "Harry's plan (which Charles and William)demanded)...Demanded comes across very strongly, I doubt it was "demanded" but all agreed Harry and Meghan would try to formalize what they wanted in written form so everyone was on the same page to begin with. Again this is where how the press words things can really skew how things are perceived.

Anon 19:37 , Some husbands watch the talking news heads ALL the time. The big networks will repeat the stories multiple times in a two hour time block. It’s annoying . It doesn’t matter what network, in the USA we have very divided coverage. . If the husband yells at the TV like it’s sport, you want to pull the fuse out of the electric box. We have one friend who has to cut short his weekday evenings to get home to catch an evening program. This person insists the program has to be watched live and not recorded for later. People won’t even watch another network to hear a differing opinion. So if a news network is their go-to choice it makes you mad.

  39. Go Meghan! Just keep doing the good work as I know she will. And I do hope that the RF takes action against the staff leakers. This is ridiculous that apparently paid staffers are allowed to continue working after such breaches. Thank you Charlotte for continued coverage.

  40. Lucy, it is very good to have the leak information confirmed. Even on this blog, "loyal" supporters have been outraged about the "disrespect" of the announcement that "blindsided" Harry's poor relatives. This sort of leaking has been going on for a long time but with a negative spin -- for example, I truly believe Meghan might have liked the emerald tiara but it was being saved for Eugenie. So an insider gives that bit of fact but makes a scenario in which Meghan demanded and the Queen refused. The RF should not have allowed aides, courtiers, insiders, whatever to ruin Meghan's life in the UK. I have to admit that I have resentment over the fact that the ugliness was not attacked each and every time it occurred, with great force. I don't feel good knowing that family support was minimal, lacking, or not adequate. Even now, I wish the sometimes outspoken cousins would pip up. I feel like the RF outside of Charles' family are happy that Meghan is gone, and I am just having a hard time supporting anyone except Harry and Meghan.

    1. The information from CNN, 19:37, may very likely be unreliable. It's often inflammatory. Perhaps that's why Lucy doesn't like her husband watching it.

Allison in US, the scenario you propose and the words you cite (along with "Charles and William demanded" which 15:63 mentioned and is probably CNN's wording) are consistently used by the media to create click bait headlines. Then if enough people reprint it and share it often enough it becomes fact. A false fact. An untruth. But the truth of it doesn't matter as it's already been accepted by everyone. That's how the human brain works. It believes what is repeated often enough.

    2. In this magpie‘s opinion, the story about the emerald tiara must be false because no bride in the then Meghan Markle’s situation would want to wear an emerald tiara. There is a reason why brides prefer white tiaras over coloured ones with their white wedding gown; emerald tiaras in particular go with nothing, not even the bridal bouquet. Princess Eugenie was the sole exception because the emeralds fitted with her reddish hair, and that only because she forwent a veil. Also, Princess Eugenie does not have to worry so much about what to wear on future tiara occasions because there will be few in her life, whereas the Duchess of Sussex would have had more occasion to wear her bridal tiara in the future if she had stayed a full-time royal. And the Queen Mary Bandeau is perfect for that, it is substantial but not too showy and goes with everything.

My guess is that the reporter overheard something about the origin of the emerald tiara, which is indeed uncertain, and “filled in” the rest in a creative way. It would not have been much of a story if it had only concerned Princess Eugenie.

      Maggie - short for magpie

  41. That is the smile of a happy woman.

I cannot help but wonder if Charles or William would have done anything differently the last 2 years knowing the ending would be disastrous in countless ways....

  42. I just love her! I personally don't view this is PR. Charitable work is required of royals so if anything, now that they aren't technically full-time dedicated royals it has more meaning to me because it's their choice. It seems a totally natural move since Meghan has always cared about supporting women.

On an unrelated note, I finally got around to buying the Together cookbook. Looking forward to trying out some recipes! If anyone has recommendations, send them my way. I'm a vegetarian so I hope they can be easily modified.

  43. I do not understand any of this. What do Meghan and Harry bring to charities in Canada? Do either of them truly have an understanding? Are they going to actually give the groups large donations out of their own money... outside of the UK, and now not even the UK, will their visits connect with anyone to bring any extra funds or attention to the causes...

    ReplyDelete

    1. ali, we'll have to see if Meghan can help. Already the two groups have attention around the world. Meghan was able to help the women in the UK have proper clothes for interviews and jobs.

    2. Meghan lived in canada before and sis chatities before being with Harry. May be you can go through the stories and understand what she was doing and how it did help the charities. If you still dont undertand you can check the various post charlotte shared on how meghan and harry work or endorsement of charities havz had big impact on the final receivers that all these charities try to help. I am glad that seems to remain true to herself : get involved in the community or country she is living and be a force to changes as luch as she can especailly for those who need it. Go meghan and.harry

    3. I am not being snarky. I like what little I know about them but at least for me the reason I know about either of them is because they are members of the BRF. I really hope they can build independent private lives for themselves in Canada and find jobs that they enjoy. I can truly understand wanting to be out of the fish bowl of the UK. Locating to Canada is of course is going to be a bit harder for Harry just as moving to the UK was for Meghan. I wish them both the best.

    4. I share your confusion, Ali. Without the royal family connection, Meghan returns to her pre-wedding status. Does her visit to a Canadian charity mean more or less than if you or I visited that same charity? For me, I hadn't known her identity before she dated Harry. Literally never had heard of her. Not when she was a "suitcase girl" on the game show and not as an actress on Suits, a show that my friends and I had never even heard of. No one has heard of me, either, so it isn't a criticism of Meghan. But she is only famous through the ties that she is rejecting.

      Delete
    5. She is now famous and has connections, thus she doesnt need to be active in the BRF.
She and Harry, with their current fame, can bring awareness to charities. It is not like her fame ends promptly because of this. And it is not like theyre divorcing, or being ex-communicated from the family. Theyre just working less for them.
That is why they have a different impact you or I would have.

  45. On the day of her visit, it seems she was given (I would prefer that she bought it) a lovely pendant ("The Duchess of Sussex wore a necklace by a First Nations artist on an outing in Vancouver earlier this week.

Meghan Markle, 38, was gifted the stunning 18ct gold and diamond whale tail charm on her visit to the Justice for Girls group on Tuesday.

The necklace was designed by Hollie Bartlett, who is a member of the Haisla Nation. Hollie hand-picked the piece from her collection at Vancouver's Douglas Reynolds Gallery, which specialises in historic and contemporary northwest coast native art.")

Earlier in the day she wore a pendant with Harry's zodiac sign.

She seems to be having a very happy time! She looks like someone who has been set free. Regarding security, it seems like his family should pay that because they are the reason they need it (being born a prince was not Harry's fault). On her drive to the airport, she looked absolutely free.

I would be interested to know how Meghan organises her charities in Canada? Is it done by the Sussex Buckingham Palace Office? Is it by invitation of the Canadian government? And will Harry also do charity visits in Canada? Any ideas by the community here?

Read some informative posts on another well respected Megan blog regarding immigration status to Canada. As long as they don’t work they can stay for 6 months without visas etc. The poster was unsure how the no work status would translate to charity fund raising esp. if the charity is outside Canada. But that raises the question of how they can become financially independent financially. There was also information posted about special rules Canada has about not being able using titles while residing in Canada that was last updated in 2001. Were several other points raised by posters who are concerned about moving to, livingq or working in Canada but supportive of H and M. To me sounds like the process to accomplish what the Sussexs are trying to achieve is extremely complicated. Am wondering if there will be decisions/guidelines for the transition period (how long is that) and then the long term plan. What their time in the UK will be seems even more uncertain. I think it will take a year to begin to see how they will function and longer to know will this work, ie will they accomplish their goals. As much as I hope they again be successful personally and professionally, I’m still bothered by 2 things. 1. Why did they leave Archie in Canada and 2. Why make the announcement prematurely esp with the details of the Q & A (I understand about the concern of the leak but there is alternative wording that would have muted the pushback to some degree. Both have allowed a lot of negative stories to be spun. I’m afraid Charlotte will be forced to write many updates in the year ahead!
