Harry & Meghan's Next UK Engagements & Updates On Future Plans

It's been a rather chaotic period in royal watching with a deluge of misinformation dominating news coverage. Today, we finally had an official update on Harry and Meghan's plans for engagements in the UK and future plans for the couple. BP confirmed the Sussexes transition will take shape on 31 March with their office at Buckingham Palace closing. From there, they will be represented in the United Kingdom by their new foundation office. As previously announced there will be a review in twelve months time to ensure the new arrangement works for all parties.

Before that, the Duke and Duchess will return from Canada shortly for a number of engagements. Harry's schedule will resume on 28 February with an Invictus Choir visit for a re-recording of Bon Jovi's song Unbroken in aid of the games. For the Duchess, she will join her husband at the annual Endeavour Awards on Thursday, 5 March. The fund plays an important role in ensuring that more servicemen and women have the opportunity to rediscover their self-belief and fighting spirit through physical challenges. It's become an annual event for Harry and Meghan and one I anticipated we would see continue.

Both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will attend the Mountbatten Festival of Music on Saturday, 7 March. The Festival sees the Royal Marines showcase their incredible musicianship and pageantry and features a wide range of musical styles, including music from the big screen and superb solo items, as well as the traditional marches and overtures that have proved such a hit with audiences over the years. The couple will attend due to Harry's position as Captain General Royal Marines, which was passed down from Prince Philip. There were stories suggesting Princess Anne would take on the role, it now seems no final decisions have been made yet.

With that, we have an update on Harry's military roles.

On Sunday, 8 March, the Duchess will attend a special event to mark International Women's Day. We'll hear more details in due course. Last year, Meghan joined a panel discussion at King's College London, which brought together a special panel of female thought-leaders and activists to discuss a range of issues affecting women.

On Monday, 9 March, the Duke and Duchess will join the Queen and other members of the royal family for the annual Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey.

A palace spokesperson said they will return to the UK "regularly" over the remainder of the year for patronages, other commitments, meetings and I imagine visits associated with their philanthropic vehicle. Looking ahead, the Invictus Games will take place in The Hague from May 9-16, we'll see Harry and Meghan (and hopefully Archie) there.

More from Carolyn Durand:

The use of Sussex Royal has been one of the most debated topics in recent weeks. At this point it is "under review" with the final decision not expected to be announced until the launch of the foundation. I know initially it was due to launch in early April, though a name change would delay this until later this year. As this is very much uncharted territory, it's all going to take time. It's very much a case of waiting for official announcements. Should there be a change, and I imagine there very well could be, plans for that are likely already underway behind-the-scenes.

As previously announced, Harry and Meghan intend to continue working with their patronages in the UK. The National Theatre's director Rufus Norris spoke to The Telegraph about Meghan and recent rumours only yesterday:

The Duchess of Sussex has promised the National Theatre her work as patron will be "business as usual", its Artistic Director has said, as he disclosed they are exploring projects to use her "star reach" for good.
Describing reports that executives were left "fuming" at the revelation their royal patron would be leaving Britain to build a new life in North America as "total fiction".
"From our perspective, I don’t think it's going to change anything. She is still very engaged, the conversations are regular and ongoing, there are ideas we are exploring. There has been no indication at all from her that her engagement with us would be anything other than business as usual – she has proven to be a very engaged patron, and we look forward to working with her.
"She has star reach, she understands the nature of what we’re trying to do. She has been interested in the learning work, the work in communities, the work around the country. She’s less interested in coming here and going to a string of press nights. It's a really in-depth engagement with the range of work we do."
Last night, a royal source confirmed that there are provisional plans for a "much more substantive project" to come.'

The couple are expected to have a number of meetings with their patronages during their return. Omid Scobie also reports "It’s confirmed that the couple will retain their other titles of The Earl and Countess of Dumbarton and The Baron & Baroness Kilkeel."

  1. Charlotte - do you think having a review in 12 months means that there still a chance that they may return as working royals if things don’t work out or get complicated? Do you think the Queen and Charles are leaving the door opened for them? Do you see it as a possibility?

    1. You know, I honestly wouldn't rule anything out at this point. Certainly, Harry and Meghan initially wanted a part-time situation regarding their royal roles. The BRF decided that just wasn't possible for various reasons. It's impossible to overstate how complicated it all is and how much still needs to be thrashed out. Given the gravity of it all, some decisions will not be made until the 12 month review. For Harry and Meghan, they are very much focused on their foundation which I have no doubt will be a great success.

  2. I have a question for you Charlotte, please neglect it if it is stated above. So what happens to Invictus, Sentebale? Can Harry keep those or they will go to another royal? And how on earth they can keep their Earl and countess title? :)

    1. Harry will definitely hold on to Invictus and Sentbale. He doesn't need to be a working member of the BRF for those (it's trickier with military appointments etc). As for the other titles, they were conferred as a gift by the Queen on their wedding day. I don't think a great deal is set in stone yet.

  3. I know they weren´t happy in the UK and they probably are now...and that is all that matters. But from the outside it seems a little clumsy to be "returning to the UK regularly" and to "work around the country" while you don´t even live in the country. It is my impression though that the Queen is going above and beyond to provide them with some foundation for building their new life but also to give them the much wanted freedom.

I have been feeling so sorry for the Queen and Philip in the last 2-3 months. Andrew, the Phillips´, Margaret´s son, Meghan and Harry, Philip´s health...whether we like it or not, we have to admit that the family has been falling apart for various reasons. I am sorry the Queen and Philip have to put up with this at this stage of their lives.

    1. I belive they can manage that smoothly it is more a problem of ery good organization, competent staff on the ground, a clear line of reporting and timeliness. In corporates a regional manager is responsible for many countries, usually lives in the country where the regional office is located and just travels regularly to the others countries. H&M are lucky to be able to explore different arrangement while Archie is not going to school yet.

    4. Ella, you're so right. Although I think H&M could have stayed if things were handled differently, I know HM will miss them. And she surely is sad that Peter and Autumn are divorcing, and for her sister's son. And today I saw a school bus driving around London with a "If you see this man, tell him to call the FBI" poster with Andrew's face. Certainly NOT what HM is used to, I'm sure. And it was put in place by a well-known US lawyer.

I really don't know why she doesn't step back and spend more time not working, for her own enjoyment, but perhaps her sense of duty wants her to make sure that Charles will be accepted.

    5. Allison, if I am not mistaken, Gloria Allred was one of the people Meghan wrote her famous letter to when she was 11? That would make the bus thing even more bizarre.

  6. With the exception of publicly stating they are stepping back from Royal Duties as well as funding themselves, I personally don't view this any different than when W & K were first married and lived in Anglesey and W stayed on the Search and Rescue. They were allowed to pretty much live as a newly wedded couple who popped up for a few official family functions.

    1. W&K were not making money while showing up for certain engagements. Completely different situations.

      Delete
    2. You are right, but the difference is what they are planning to do with the “other” part of their time. W&K wanted to live a low-key country life on Anglesey, which interleaved perfectly with doing some royal engagements and stepping up to be full time royals. And I think we can all see how good those years were for them.
The difference is H&M very much wants to work in the public sphere, but without being accountable to the BRF. Which complicates things significantly.

    3. @ KayLynn,
I agree with all your points. Yes, W&K were given a lot of room to ease into their positions.

    4. They were given a lot of room when they entered the RF. The comparison would be on point if H&M had decided to show up once a month immediately after getting married and live privately the rest of the time. That’s not what they want to do now.

      Delete
    5. KayLynn and Anon 16:00. I think the situation is much different because 1) Will and Kate stated from the beginning that they wanted to ease in slowly, learn the ropes, lead a quiet life for a while, while preparing for the future. Meghan and Harry wanted to hit the ground running and this stepback was a change of plans for them. At the beginning they did NOT want a lot of room to ease in and were very clear about it. 2) Related to nr 1, for Will and Kate the break was a temporary, well planned thing. For Meghan and Harry it was not a plan, but a reaction to something (media abuse, related struggles, desire for independence), and it probably is not temporary. 3) The financial aspect is quite important, and also the aspect of Meghan and Harry building their own public brand outside the scheme of the RF. 4) Will and Kate knew exactly what was coming for them because William is going to be a king. Meghan and Harry had more questions regarding their future roles, which certainly made long-term planning harder for them.

  8. The most important news I had been curious about and planned to ask Charlotte and/or, those who have information is answered here ( Victoria Murphy’s post via MAD ). Harry will continue to retain the military title he had earned by his own choice of career/work experience/ advanced in consideration of his royal status or not, he did have that title. Then my other question: Why can’t he wear the uniform befitting the title he had earned in the military for the ten years he was a part of it? That is if and when the occasion is right.

Over all this is good news, that they will have some continuous work and visiting activates to Harry and Archie’s birth place. Meghan sacrificed for two/four years (as they put it during the engagement interview-it is a new chapter). They both experienced the royal life TOGETHER as a couple. In fact, for some strange reason, the other day, I was thinking, why don’t they write a book titled something like, “Our Story, 2016-2020, by Harry and Meghan.
Sussexroyal.com site is a reflection of how through they can be in explaining what needs to be explained while they are in transition of a different chapter. It is also very clear this is a couple who prefer to tell their own story. It is a case in point considering the various mis-information based on very limited lead the tabloid media seem to be blurry about, and has to build its own story to target the right click bet participants, typically- the haters. Their visit to Stanford University also makes sense for a number of reasons which can complement their interest and project.

Another best news, is Meghan’s continued participation and visit in the UK (her “happy to have best two guys in the world” country). The icing is experimental time period of one year, and revises thereafter; there is something safe and working room. Royal reporters seem to be able to continue to document as well. Sussex royal had been a controversy. I am sure they can get creative in coming up with a name. Well, they are royals, royal Sussex? Yes / if the current site is left to explain their transition and becomes a link to a future site, may be workable. It seems their foundation has one name and site, and their “business venture”, another? Can’t they have one major site like, “The Official web site of D&D of Sussex” and have links of foundation as well as links of “business venture”?

Charlotte- Thank you for such well filtered quality and reliable news in the middle of much speculative, sometimes stinging, other times vengeful, or here and there limited news. It will make a lot of sense and practicality for the couple to have a continued partially working link with the monarchy. In the long run, it will protect them as an experienced institution of its own right in the country and globaly

    1. Anon15, I do like your idea of leaving the @sussexroyal site & instagram up & live. They can both serve as a source for transitional information & directions to new sites etc. I think it would be good to leave them up, as there is the one year review time & one never knows what the future holds. It closes no doors & leaves all options open, if ever needed. It also fits with the whole pattern of not filling in their places, as in HM not filling in Harry's honorary military titles & giving them to someone else. It all leaves the door open for at least a year. I also think there is much to work with just focusing on them as The Duke & Duchess of Sussex. To most in the world, that says Royal without even saying Royal! It will be intriguing to see what they come up with. Oh & I am so happy Harry gets to retain his personal military ranks & titles. That to me seemed rather harsh & I actually had hurt feelings for him, thinking that he would not have the ranks that he earned & to no longer be a part of the military family he so loves. He is a veteran no matter what. I may have misunderstood it from the start, but when they talked about Remembrance Day, it had sounded to me like he not only could not lay a wreath, but could also not appear in uniform. That really made my heart hurt & that didn't feel right or fair at all. I'm so glad I either misunderstood or that this wrinkle has been ironed out. The military has been such an important part of his life & clearly still is with his philanthropic work:)

    2. Becca USA, agree with you completely! The military ranks were not a mere gift -- I felt Harry earned them.

    3. Anon15, why do you think Meghan sacrificed several years? She had stated many times she was very happy with Harry, with their relationship, and that she was completely at peace with moving to the UK and ending her acting career. She has gotten many opportunities, had many successes. For a moment she got a new family, a "family she´s never had".
Yes, then things went south. But when they weren´t happy, they said it, they took a break and eventually decided to take their own path, all within a relatively short period of time. Honestly if things go as they appear now, it will be Harry who makes way greater sacrifice. My main point is though, people are more than willing to make some sacrifices for the love of their life. And I think for most people these are sacrifices that are more than worth it. :)

Harry was never going to lose the rank he earned from his own military service. The ranks in question, the ones that will be on hold for a year and then reviewed, are all honorary appointments.

    6. I think the 12 months review time may keep extending until the couple will be on solid ground, also assess their departure's impact on the rest of the monarchy's team members within the "protective" time period. That is except unless there is a major change on both sides.

    1. Rita - Good point! I assume Sussex royal will not be used for "independent business" outside of the monarchy, or D&D Foundation from the way things are “progressing”. My guess is Sussex royal will be pending at a standstill except the existence of the temporary website. I hope the monarchy and the couple's side find a compromising way to use that brand to benefit their upcoming foundation. I think it is also their Instagram ID which has over 11 million followers. Sussex royal by now is a familiar brand, the ID and symbolic bridge in their transformation towards a new life, career, place, space, and chapter. I doubt it will be a good idea to give it up all together, not only as a brand, also as endearing name to the turn of events. My guess is “Sussex royal" will be the elephant in the room that will enhance the compromising nature of the future. In a way H&M had strategized with some insight. Well with Harry’s military experience, and Meghan’s international studies major, this may be an interesting team of a couple.

    3. Becca – Yes, the update on the military title is good news which is rightfully his. The loss of the honorary military title is understandable since he had stepped down from the qualification for it ( senior royal?).
Becca and Rita – The phrase “Sussex royal” is the couple’s other child. For the monarchy’s institutions and those who oppose the way the couple declared their “departure” status, it is a reminder of the shock wave experienced by royal watchers, those interested observers, media and history. Personally, if I were the couple, I will negotiate to keep it slightly modified. If I were the establishment side, well, no comment (I can’t resist / vanish it! I would have made a mean Q).

Then they discuss taking away "Royal" from "SussexRoyal," and then some "expert" says that the place is scared of the power of H&M. What we do without Charlotte?? But I think it's petty to take away from their "brand name." They are royal and will always be. The word "royal" is not owned by the RF, is it? I could start a business with that word in it.

    1. I know you all hate the DM but there’s a very well explained piece about the law regulations for the use of certain words, including royal.

      Delete
    2. It’s actually not just the Queen’s decision. There are actual laws there that might take precedence about whatever the family would like to do.
And why is it petty? Their business plans didn’t line up with the company’s policy is you will. So, they made their leave. But no employee would be allowed to use old business cards as credentials.
I have decided to only believe what they are actually putting out themselves, as there is so much gossip around. They have never admitted to anything else than being welcome, loved and supported in their decisions. So that is what I believe. If it’s not true, than they are actively lying instead of just staying silent about it. And I refuse to believe they have so little backboard and are corruptible with hush money. Concluding: I think neither Harry nor Meghan appreciate it when strangers make assumptions about their family relationships, calling them petty, jealous or unsupportive or what else.

    3. In the UK, as in most realms, like Canada, NZ &Aus the use of the word “royal”, “monarch” and a few others are actually regulate by law. So no, you would not be able to just start a business, or register a company with royal in the name. The decision might not be with the Queen but rather with what complies with the law. And my understanding is that they will not be able to register a private foundation in the UK with the word Royal in the name.
They could of course register Sussexroyal in the US, but will have to use a different name for their work in the UK, which is not a good idea for branding.

    4. Harry is royal and Meghan married into the royal family, it's not who owns the 'royal right' but who can exercise it. I do not think the palace is afraid of the power of H&M but rather the public's opinion of allowing them to utilize their royal status while stepping down. I think the Queen has made it very clear that she is willing to work with H&M and has their well being and happiness at heart, but there are legal ramifications that need to be considered that we aren't privy to, and she has a responsibility to her people to make the lines as clear and transparent as possible. It's not an issue of petty, but appears more and more like H&M jumped the gun on the patent and website without having had full approval....and therein lies the rub. I think the continued speculation just adds to the drama and trust that the Queen will make the right decision for the right reasons.

      Delete
    5. Sorry, I don’t see this as petty. The palace is not saying they are not royal anymore. It’s just the use of the word royal as it will connect with H and M’s future endeavors. They are just as royal as Peter and Zara (and their spouses) because H and M are members of the royal family. But it’s the use of the word royal in connection with their future work that is called into question. And btw, I fully support H and M and believe they can accomplish a lot and lead a happy life even if they cannot continue as Sussex Royal. Anon in CA

    6. I should have thought about the fact that royal has a different meaning outside of the US! 8. There is an article on the worldtrademarkreview website which would appear to be more reliable that the tabloids. It say that it largely depends on whether the Queen gave consent prior to filing of the trademark. I have done no review of my own on this, but would imagine that consent would normally be part of the filing if it is at all relevant. The UK is a small market so I suppose the US legal situation would be much more interesting, though. The worldtrademarkreview article also points out that if the Sussexes drop the Sussex Royal trademark at the request of the Palace, all of the Royal Family would have to live with unrelated third parties using it at least in some countries. Perhaps they will do some more thinking on this, the information about the Duke of Sussex’s military titles would appear to be a sign that this process is still ongoing. They might be keeping the titles and functions free for him in the unlikely event that he returns full time, but perhaps it has also dawned on them that in the military, and, especially, in the Commonwealth, there is simply no one to replace him adequately. He was the last active soldier in the working Royal Family.

As mentioned before, I think the Sussexes would be well advised for purely practical reasons not to use any names that could make them dependent on the Palace, which will understandably always put the interests of the working royals first. The Sussexes have plenty of start power in their own right.

      Maggie – short for magpie

      Delete
    9. I agree with you magpie.

The monarchy is in a delicate, dicey place. Its survival depends on its popularity. The dependence on the royal rota and tabloid culture to shape the royal narrative and its future is evident. Right now these tabloids are kingmakers and have their royal litmus test. They have a strong grip in shaping British culture, entertainment, who’s a royal, polices and politics. Their readers, even if they are a minority among the UK populace, are angry, very vocal, fearful and temperamental.

A writer friend of mind reminds me there’s a reason why public executions were so popular. They were a source of cheap entertainment an outlet for people who hold grievances, and they provided social control. Public lynching in the American South was popular for similar reasons along with the power to intimidate and subjugate.

Our modern culture would say we are far more civilized and have done away with such awful practices. Instead, the internet provides a platform to fulfill that need to idolize, to entertain, to humiliate, to hate, to lie, to advocate, to shape policies and the body politics so there are real occasional good and unfortunately, far more harm. Like weaponized drones, it’s not a face to face encounter, but hidden anonymity. It’s more civilized that way and offers less risk. And yes, people do suffer by it. It’s remarkable despite the many layers of protection society tries to impose, human nature is often at war with itself using all the modern tools available.

I’m not an avid monarchist so it’s a bit odd to find myself here. But I think my interest in this couple is due to my love of history and how it shapes our institutions and culture. Witnessing the struggle of M&H reveals how brittle and weak the British monarchy really is behind the pomp and grandeur. The monarchy doesn’t lead as much as it follows. Like a figurehead. That shouldn’t surprised me. But it does.

      Brave New World indeed.

I think that whoever advised them about patenting their Sussex Royal trademark did not thoroughly check out the legal position regarding the wording and it is not only UK and US legislation which applies. It definitely needed to be checked with the laws in Commonwealth countries as well as the Duke and Duchess had been given a special role in that institution. I haven't seen any mention that this has been done and if that is the case it is a serious oversight. As already mentioned by several on this blog some Commonwealth countries give specific protection to this word. Before the Duke of Windsor stepped down from his role as Monarch, all the Realms were consulted for their views and it was probably their majority opposition which finally persuaded him that he had to choose between his role as Monarch and his marriage. I am sure that Harry and Meghan did not intend to cause problems but some of their decisions have done so. The Queen's cautious approach is a recognition that the Commonwealth should not be taken for granted. I wish the Sussex family all the best but they need to think very carefully about how to proceed. It can't just be their own preferences which of the Royal events they will attend in future if they are to remain part of her working family. They need to help spread the load of the more boring duties which the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have shouldered over the years. I understand a retired UK army officer who is not representing the Queen is not automatically entitled to wear a military uniform. The latest announcements from Buckingham Palace about Harry's military roles show that the Queen is leaving the door wide open for their return on an agreed basis. We should give them all space to work this through.

    11. Well said Annette!! Your last statement "we should give them all space to work this through", is excellent. Now that the decisions have been made its time for all of us to sit back and watch it unfold, for good, better, or for worse, whatever that may be. The Queen is wise in that she did what was necessary given the circumstances, but also as a grandmother recognized that sometimes life decisions made rashly or emotionally have a way of haunting us. I agree that she is leaving the door open for their return, should that be the case.

    12. “Decisions made rashly or emotionally....”?

If you are talking about Meghan and Harry, I doubt this was a rash or an emotional decision. They’ve had no public support from the Palace. No announcement regarding the racism and sexism Meghan endured. The level of hate and lies spread far exceed that of what Kate faced. The world is watching this.

I don’t see a door opening. To go back to what? More abuse? The English tabloids and royal courtiers may deny the racism but the people who have endured and experienced such things know differently. Ask the Windrush generation and see what these people think about their racist treatment.

What are the tangible benefits of the Commonwealth? Because there’s a big difference between the benefits worded in the charter vs. the reality. People should read it and see that a Pakistani is given more hassle than a visiting American for a visa. Same for voting rights and matter of security and defense. It fact the only nations who might receive benefits are rich commonwealth countries like NZ, Australia and Canada. The poorer nations get to provide scenic background and exoticism for the photogenic royal tours meant to boost royal poll standing. It’s a false extravaganza for those still yearning for the empire.

I do understand that in acting accordingly it will make him look guilty even if there is no legal ground to prosecute him (morally he is despicable either way). But they had years of fading him out. Big mistake they didn’t took that chance.

  25. This may not seem related to M & H but please bear with me for a minute. I have been deeply saddened by the death of Caroline Flack, a British celebrity who was in essence bullied into suicide by social media. I am sure Harry is saddened too as she was someone he was friends with in the past. Reading a thoughtful piece in The Telegraph, I realized once again that celebrity status comes at a terrible price nowadays and it made me think that Harry and Meghan were absolutely right to step back from it--at least from the glaring and cruel spotlight they were under in the UK. And to craft for themselves the kind of life that they can, well, live with. Royalists like me might not have liked it but since the original announcement I have read and thought and read and thought and can now say absolutely that I wish nothing but the absolute best for them and I totally understand what Harry meant when he explained how vulnerable he felt.

    ReplyDelete
  26. If there is one thing the last month have convinced me is that it would have been so much better if all the kinks were ironed out and agreed on before it became public. As Charlotte said, one cannot over empathize how complicated this is and there is a lot if back and forth, compromising, and looking for solutions outside the box happening.
So I am going to take nothing as set in stone yet, even if it is announced by the palace.
Like the announcement on the honorary military positions, according to the first announcement Harry was giving them up, now he is keeping them for at least another 12 months. I am sure behind the scenes they are trying to find a practical way he can keep then when not representing HM and living abroad for the majority of his time. I am sure there are other similar issues they are sorting out.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Charlotte, you certainly share at least one fine quality with Meghan, and that is an editor's eye! Not only are your pieces a breath of fresh air with their factual POV, but your choice of photos (even when no new ones are available) makes them even more appealing.

And yes, although fashion is not my main focus, I so look forward to seeing what Meghan will be wearing on the upcoming appearances.

  28. As for their foundation, I believe just plain Sussex Foundation would be immediately identifiable. I also have hope that the BRF will yet see the advantage of harnessing Harry and Megahn's "star power" for their good and that of the Commonwealth especially. Plus I hate to see people lose sleep over the use of the word “royal” given all the other calamities in the world. Great legal minds would be better used in fixing the many injustices in our world than delving in the minutiae of how “royal” can or can’t be used in New Zealand or India.

  30. I agree with RachelZA@15:25, but it seems to me that leaks are the major problem, and Harry and Meghan seem to have no control over them. Perhaps when they are finally away from BP, they will have control over their communications, along with a staff that works only for them, and has their trust, and their rollouts will occur in the way they wish them to be. I notice that Meghan doesn't seem to announce things until she has all her ducks in a row. Consider her cookbook- I'm sure she had complete control over that since that was prior to her marriage and becoming officially under the thumb of KP. This constant drip of sensational and probably false or inaccurate headlines by the gutter press is really appalling imo.

    1. Hi anon 16:33 I also think that there will be less leak as long as they are not obliged to report their activities to BP or CH. If you remember when Charlotte presented the sussex team she mentionned that their head of communication was reporting to the queen's communications secretary. So it was difficult for H&M to communicate in their own words and chosen time without getting his agreement as long as the statement should be made by BP official channels. There have been less leaks on their whereabouts since one month.

  31. It appears that BP has made an official decision and the use of Sussex Royal Foundation will not be allowed. Now all the speculation can stop and everybody can move forward. It was a hard position for the Queen to take, but given the legal ramifications it was the right choice. Now all the speculation can stop and everybody can move forward. Harry and Meghan know their path and their determination and desire for happiness will guide them. All this energy can be spent on building their foundation and MOVING FORWARD!!!!

  32. I just read this today, February 21, 10:00 pm EST. (I have not made the habit of checking sussexroyal.com except occasionally because it had stayed stationary since January more or less. The following must be new.

“While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word ‘Royal’ in any territory (either within the UK or otherwise) when the transition occurs Spring 2020.”

“As The Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue to develop their non-profit organization and plan for their future, we hope that you use this site as the source for factual information. In spring 2020, their digital channels will be refreshed as they introduce the next exciting phase to you.”
    Source: sussexroyal.com

In this respect, sussexroyal.com by choice, as temporary site, or w/o a prior calculative motive, the term sussexroyal.com, had truly served them well. It had made them in control of posting their own facts. Now that had been a success purposefully. Call it successhm.global.org (ha? / I just coined this and it made a hyper link).

Now that it will be gone, and it was a source of a revolutionary bridge to change, not only getting closer to becoming a fan to them, also realized how we can be conflicted between our parents values and our own generation values. I wish them all the strength for success in a way that the parents’ generation would have expected changes from a younger generation for a better insight, future and positive change which complements yet improves, is inclusive and forward thinking.

I find the whole situation baffling and messy. Why not go about it like princess Madeleine of Sweden, who spends much time in the US. She has not quit anything, but flies in to Sweden when she is needed there. The Swedish Queen Silvia has a charitable foundation in New York, I have seen pictures of her and her two girls Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine working for this charity. Some international movement is allowed. The Swedish royals are on holidays all the time, and nobody bats an eye lid. What is really going on here for Harry and Meghan to have to leave and create so much drama?

    3. Princess Madeleine faces severe criticism in Sweden for living in Florida/US, though it is not quite clear how she is funded and if it is even the taxpayer’s business (probably not). It takes two to agree to such a move, and if the Palace had been ok with the Sussexes quietly moving abroad to do their own thing, leaving some of their royal work behind, I dare say that is what they would have done.

    4. The Swedes are a lot less stuffy about their royals. Sweden is far more egalitarian as a society and while the Queen is popular, there is far more openness and of course, no vicious tabloid culture. Sweden didn’t have the empire hang up like the English so I think there’s less pressure and need for all the pomposity. It really is a far healthier way if we are going to have a monarchy at all in the 21st century while our world is imploding from climate change and a possible global pandemic.

I suspect my children’s generation will have far more pressing concerns and if they take notice at all, won’t care if a royal is cradling her pregnancy bump correctly or should be allowed to use the word royal or has a military designation or not.

My husband is of Swedish descent so we take an interest in the Swedish Royal family. They have exactly the same sort of news media coverage and criticism as the British Royal family. The Swedish King had his extra marital affairs revealed in a book. Crown Princess Victoria had difficulty coping with her position when young and developed anorexia, which she successfully recovered from. She married a gym owner after initial disapproval from her father and a very long wait for his assent. Both her siblings were often in the spotlight over their life styles before they married. Prince Carl Philip's wife Sofia attracted adverse comments because of previously posing for provocative photographs. Madelaine was criticised for going to live in New York after a failed engagement. The Swedish King recently announced that five of his seven grandchildren will have their HRH titles removed and will not have royal duties or be eligible for tax payer funding in future. It is true that they have less pomp and ceremony than the UK, but Swedes seem to want to maintain their system as do the British. Part of the attraction for tourists in UK is the same pomp and ceremony being criticised. The lesson is that people in these privileged roles will always attract adverse comments if they step out of line. This includes the First Family of the USA. The US President has far more real power than Queen Elizabeth because the British have constrained royal powers over the centuries. Our Royal family always have the lessons of history to warn them of the limits of their position. The difference between a democracy and an autocracy is a free press and an individual's right to criticise those in power must be jealously guarded.

      Delete
    7. Annette, freedom does not come without responsibility, including that of the free press.

I think if you are a keen royal fan, you are stuck reading gossips about them like other media coverage of other celebrities. There are a fair number of Swedes and Danes in my city and I’ve gotten to know a few through my work. They don’t bring up the subject of kings and queens, even when we exchange tidbits about our countries. Conversation tends to be about work, family, food, education, politics and culture.

The British tabloids are well known for not living up to their responsibilities. They abuse freedom. They have broken British laws. The tabloids have paid out over a $1billion to their victims and as fines. They sow anguish, fear, disinformation, misdirection and divisiveness. All in the guise as “news”.

Racism and sexism are indefensible. And the world, not just those of Anglo background, are watching. Action and the absence of action speak far more truth.

  38. I'm afraid it continues to become clear how premature and misguided their original post and website really were. Sigh. I am struggling to see what they are doing in a positive light but their statement felt badly organized, wordy and defensive in a few places, and resentful of the 12 month review. I thought they would view that as a positive thing--maybe a trial period to see what types of partnerships they might develop. From their statement it seems like they view it negatively. Did anyone else sense this?

      Delete
    2. I have to agree. They had to backtrack on several statements now and I am getting annoyed by their constant harping on their royal status. I also find their statements written in a very passive aggressive and sometimes even misleading way.
There simply are no precedent examples in the BRF in modern times. Edward VIII. was a reigning monarch, the York sisters never had the same rank/status, Zara Philipps has no titles at all and is not representing the crown in any capacity.
They always have to point out that they are still HRH and could use the styling but won’t. Why even go on about it?
The law in the UK (not the Queen by the way) cannot forbid to use „royal“ outside the uk. And? If you want to use your branding in the UK you need a different name. It’s the law. Simple as that.
Their description about the “charitable entity” is still vague. They should stop releasing information till they have everything finalised and ready to go. And they should have done that from the get go. Because with every statement I get more annoyed and turned off and I was a big supporter.

    3. I get the same sense, so you are not alone Anna. I fear that a lot of the miscommuncation could have been avoided from the get go if everything had been decided ahead of time. The release of the website and their announcement together was premature. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't one of their advisors Sara Latham who formerly worked in politics? Because this feels more like a campaign and that is off putting.

I feel bad for them, as to me, many of their actions do give the impression of leaning towards the side of the boat of trying to make money or success of their "royal" status. It just doesn't sit well with me. If they were the selfless people I hope they really are... I would have thought it was enough to have their freedom & just work to do good.... in that selfless spirit, to me one wouldn't be fretting about being able to use the word "royal".... 39. I'm of the impression that all this drama and confusion is a result of palace "Leaks" and the tabloid press making up inflamatory headlines out of whole cloth on a daily basis, so that Harry and Meghan's team is constantly putting out fires. This makes them look like they don't know what they're doing. As it is, it seems to me that they are constantly responding to new obstacles that courtiers seem to put in their way. I don't see anything defensive in their latest Sussex Royal post except their offer of an explanation of a very complicated situation. It would seem to me that the use of the word Royal would have been something that would come up very early in discussions. I look forward to the time when Harry and Meghan will not be saddled by courtiers and can rely on their own staff and themselves to communicate their intentions and their plans. I'm sure they find this more than frustrating to face made-up and inflammatory headlines daily whose sole purpose it seems is to gin up anger and hatred towards them- the very reason they are leaving in the first place- which Harry himself has clearly stated. I'm beginning to think that the Monarchy itself needs to somehow make a stand against this destructive racism promulgated by the British tabloid press. I cannot believe that the press acts like this with total impunity.

  43. I watched a 1-hour show on public TV about the staff who serve the RF, and frankly I ended up thinking that I could never do that and I could never be a member of the RF. I honestly don't know how Kate and William can stand it. My only thought is that Kate's close family is the saving anchor for them. I had thought, very naively, that Charles and Camilla might spend time with Harry and Meghan -- I even had thoughts of them babysitting Archie -- but they seem to be too busy and Harry and Meghan were at the mercy of all the people who wanted Meghan out of the family. Meghan seems very low drama, but of course whatever she does is demonized, like how she tried to poison Princess Charlotte with her wedding bouquet or ruin the world with her avocado brunch.

  44. Oh dear. Regarding the latest development: tit for tat communication between BP and the sussexes about the use of sussexroyal, I wish we are alreay on 1st april and that latest crutial details have been agreed so that opportunities to create drama around the sussex are reduced at leat from the palace. To my opinion this highlight the very low level of trust between BP and Sussexes. Ressentment and anger are still alive between both sides. A simple statement by end of april from BP with clear explanations would have been way better. Clearly explaining why the sussexroyal won't be used and for what purposes it serves until the fundation name is announced by H&M. They are supposed to be the expert in communication compared to sussexes, an institution that works without passion and feeling but look at the big picture, for the best interest and long term impact on the monarchy. On the principal it is normal that BP looks at that issue and draw clear line that can apply to any other member of the family who may want to follow H&M path (i think mainly of charlotte and louis). Exceptions are always more difficult to manage. However they delivered this as usual by a leak first that immediatly portrayed H&M negatively. On the other hand can we blame the sussexes who once again have the feeling they were throwned under the bus and went on posting their side of the story about the topic ? These are difficult time for that familly as their drama plays like a reality tv show. I hope to be wrong.in the coming days but it seems those forces are at it to make sure that their last engagement as working royal will close with controversies. So far for me they were winning the battle with the media, pr, courtier because they call it quit when actually most would have prefer them to remain the royal family bully target. They have navigated this so far with dignity and I hope they will keep it up. Just couple of weeks to go and their interactions with BP will be limited to the minimum.

It’s interesting to read how people are feeling and reacting around the world. From all I have seen here regarding the ongoing announcements since January ... it’s very definitely a feeling of sadness to watch the shattering relationships within the family. I don’t know anyone that would say that H & M are winning the battle with the media, support seems to be firmly with Her Majesty, Charles and William. I’m intrigued what other Aussies who read this fair and unbiased blog would say. I rather think 2020 is going to be a stressful year for both sides of this great divide. I do worry for the health of The Queen and Prince Phillip. And, equally I’m just as worried for the mental health of M & H, as some of these decisions they are making seem impetuous and Irrational. Thanks for your post, it did get me thinking where you lived and what media are you following. Take care Christelle1. x

    3. Hello Dee. I hope you are doing fine. Well you can now say that you know at least one person who thinks H&M are winning. Why do they win ? They have been subject to "unrelanting and cruel" coverage to use Charlotte words in a previous post and for many months. They have decided to stand up against their abusers and choose their sanity and well being over titles and pomp. No abuser wants their prey to break free, they need you to stick around to justify their wrong doing. They did. They win over the part of media, royal commentators and courtier who despised them but were addicted enough to fuel their vitrol at them at every opportunity ( and if you look at some headline thay are still addicted to them as you still see those negative headline a month after they step dow and before the sussexroyal name drama). They win against those who awarded Meghan for the 2nd year with the fastest social climber prize. She was not a royal before, she knows what work means and she can work again and leave that behind her. They win against this part of the opinion who belives that because they pay your bills they can insult you to the level of calling your wife or child chimpanze. Is it normal that because your employer pays you a salary he/she can abuse you ? Who will fight against this except yourself? Yes it is sad that it comes at a price and i am refering to the familly relationship. May be in couple of years they will enjoy a stronger bond. It comes to which media i read ? I discovered charlotte blog couple of weeks before their engagement. So I would check charlotte first for the facts, objective reporting and culture. I was a keen reader of KP and BP, express, the guardian, insider. i checked the media of the royal rota especially when the negative coverage increased. Why ? I wanted to understand what were the specific wrong doing by H&M compared to the rest of royal that could justify this. I am among those who think that you should take a step back to listen to your haters to crosscheck if indeed there is something true about their perception and if eventually something can be repaired.. During their royal tour i read also the different local media. And i am a Cameroonian i lived studied and worked in different countries on afriac europe and asia including uk if i can only mention this one. No reference to newspaper from cameroon bc that is one of the least interest. The only visit we had from royal was from Charles and Diana in 1990, a three-day visit but i have been more interedted in H&M. Hope i have answered your questions. Christelle1

    4. Hi Christelle1, I too love Charlotte’s blogs, and appreciate her extremely fair reporting and commentary. It’s a rare environment for us to enjoy Royal watching. I wondered as I read your initial post about where you were from? As the great beauty of our community here, is that Charlotte has bought us all together from every corner of our earth. I hope you didn’t take any offence by my questions, as in no way at all was that intended. Your post just got me thinking about your thoughts, and how H&M are winning. It’s so hard in Australia to know what to believe in this media deluge against the Sussexes. It’s overwhelming 😔. And, I think it’s important to understand the views of each other, so I appreciate your reply. You have shared a different perspective on “winning”, and I’m sure H&M would love to read your words. All I keep hoping is that things would just settle down, and they can begin their family life together in a happy environment as they continue with their work and highlight causes they are passionate about.
It’s been lovely to chat with you my Cameroonian friend ... we can but hope that H&M&A are about to embark on the happiest time of their lives, and that their new chapter is everything that they want it to be.

    5. Hi Dee, i didn't take any offense about your questions at all :-)). Charlotte did a wonferful job as you said to bring people with different culture and background on this blog and i appreciate that most of the time we have been able to share our views with respect and acceptance of each other opinions.
To you charlotte thank you again for your job : quality of the coverage and information we get about every event they attended to and the cause they are supporting, follow up and feedback on past initiatives. I have google so many time to look for the sales of the cookbook, the capsule collection and what happened to the other patronage and actions. And most of the time it is on your blog that we can find it. It is a very difficult period with so many information ( wrong and right) and you have really handled it very well and posting only when you belive you have enough confirmed information and distance to provide us with very comprehensive commentary. Let wait and see how the whole story unfold. For H&M I hope they will overcome the future challenges. There might be failures but that has always been the best way to learn and suceed later. Take care Dee. Christelle1

  45. I'm not wholly uncritical of the way Harry and Meghan (I put their names that way round deliberately - it's his responsibility more than hers) have handled their 'step back' from senior royalty. I think there have been definite mis-steps (even if they have also had to deal with leaks, etc). But they need to be given time to figure all these things out. A lot will depend on what they decide to do next and it will be several years, I think, before we'll know how this is going to pan out for them.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Gosh the latest announcement from H&M is not good. They made the decision to leave the country. Why did they expect that they would be allowed to continue with "business as usual". The Queen is just doing what is right for the Monarchy. Harry should realize this. However, I think he is a lot like his mother: my way or the highway. I really feel that this is much more Harry than Meghan and she is getting the blame for everything. The woman always gets the blame. I know that she has a left-wing charitable agenda that cannot be put forward while still in the RF so for her leaving made sense. But, Harry has not been happy in the RF for a long time and I think he is using her as an excuse to leave. Harry, that is just not fair to your wife.

  47. I notice that Beatrice's wedding date is not added to their scheduled events and I understand why but if they don't attend, I can only assume they are not welcome. In fact, I feel like Meghan is a bit afraid to be in the UK. And I am glad that they delineated why they will continue to need security -- they are obviously " well known" deserve to be protected. 1. I don't think it is safe to assume that 'they are not welcome' to the wedding. Since things have changed, do not think media has knowledge of their plans at this stage. I do not believe that Meghan and Harry were not invited, do not believe (for one minute) that Beatrice would not invite them or ask them to not come, but would understand if Harry attended and Meghan did not,or if both did not attend. As far as protection, it has been noted on their website that security is needed and the particulars of that will not be given to the public as a precaution. They are still valued members of the royal family and I believe that to be true because the Queen said it.

      Delete
    2. I think it is a real leap to suggest they aren’t welcome at Beatrice’s wedding. We simply don’t know what goes on behind the scenes.

      Delete
    3. Her wedding is still quite far into the future. I don’t think we know any of their scheduled events after March, with the exception of Invictus. I think it’s too early to guess if they’ll attend.-Sue

      Delete
    4. I think they might not or only very late put out personal events. And Bea‘s wedding, from the 1st of April on, will be private event for them. They also probably won’t tell us when and if they visit the birthdays or weddings of friends. Not anymore.
I do think it would look extremely bad though if they don’t attend. This would fuel speculations to no end and they would be back in all tabloids again. If no one is ill there is no reason not to- expect the family rift is THAT bad. It would be telling.

  48. There often is a scapegoat in a family that is dysfunctional, someone everyone can pick on while feeling they are doing just fine.

This whole episode seems to have divided some Kate/Meghan supporters into different camps, and I'm fighting that urge! :) Would it be so hard to hear some family support for M&H? The remaining working royals seems content to let H&M be blasted as usual. It seemed very odd to me that Meghan retreated back to Canada so quickly instead of hanging out with "family." It was odd to me that Harry wished to continue to support the Queen but did not mention the next heirs, although maybe that's just the way the RF speaks.

I do not like the atmosphere at all, I continue to support H&M with the knowledge that maybe 10% of what we read is correct and that we will never know the back stories, and it's hard not to feel bitter.

I don't know why Harry HAS to continue to be a working royal to make people satisfied -- I assume he is not held captive. Like the history of every country such as the US, there are no "good old days" in the RF. When it was a true monarchy, things were not pleasant for the public. It's wonderful to have people who will lead in remembrances and other important events, who will inhabit beautiful homes and castles and palaces that belong to the people, and who will wear the historic jewels, etc. But if Harry and William and the York sisters refused to do so, there would be someone to continue the tradition. I understand that the royal treasures are better appreciated with some family members, but this vitriol against H&M is just ridiculous.

Maybe they should drop the security and let the worse happen? How far do they have to run to be safe? I see now why Harry couldn't find a wife for so long.

    1. This started based on a choice H&M wanted to make. I don’t think anyone in the family is picking on them but reacting to their choice which has undoubtedly put more pressure on the other members of the family. We must also remember that there are two sides to this family - the personal and the working. I would venture to say that the personal feelings between William and Harry or Harry and his father should remain private. The working side of the family is lead by the Queen and she has already made several statements lending her support. In the hierarchy of the BRF, no one else is going to comment on the work side of the family if the Queen has already done so. I was a big supporter of both H&M but I do not agree with the way they have handled their departure. Hindsight is always 20/20, and I can’t help but think they must be feeling that this would have all worked out much better if their exit deal was properly hashed out before they released their website. I don’t buy into the argument that they were forced to do so because of the Sun story. There had been other leaks about them leaving. I think they released the website to force the hand of the RF and unfortunately for them it didn’t work out to their advantage in the court of public opinion or within the family. I wish they had thought about doing this in two steps - first, scale back royal duties while working on a plan to fully disengage. Then leave fully with a plan in place that everyone signed off on. There was a way to do this without the drama. They could have retreated quietly for a while to work things out. For example, there was nothing written about them during their six week family break. They chose to come back and visit Canada House making it seem like they had returned to the U.K. from their break. However, we now know that was never the intention as Archie was left in Canada. I wish them well and hope they make a decision to retreat quietly to re- group after their official leave from the RF. Taking a break and disappearing from the spotlight is a tactic used a lot by celebrities when the press gets bad. If global superstars like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift can avoid being photographed by the press then H &M should be able to avoid it too.

"I do not agree with the way they have handled their departure."

I feel the same way to this day. . At the same time, the best line from their side came from PH's speech “after many years and discussions we came to this conclusion (something to that effect). I think the monarchy's institutions/ courtiers over delayed response to their request which could no longer meet the couple's personal planning, timing meetings, projects etc. They seem to have legal, tech, business and PR advisors. The couple themselves is experienced and intelligent. To this day one mystery I am curious about is why they released their decision and status officially too soon after returning to UK post a prolonged vacation. It is as if they threw it to the world; there seems to be a built up impatience and some risk taking. I hope Harry is thoughtful enough to include a trustworthy British who is well versed in UK laws, monarchy decrees, world affairs who is also a good record keeper in his team closely

Why they released everything so early? I don't think that was their plan. But it might have something to do with Dan Wootton from the Sun who leaked the whole story, and the very same person is a huge pal to someone from KP. Easy peasy.

  50. Im little confused why the RF is criticized of not publicly supporting H and M. They have never made such a comments for any member of the family, no matter how much the public and media hates on them. Beatrice and Eugenie have been made fun of basically all their lives, Kate and her family for years. Right or wrong this is how the RF operates. If they treat HM differently than the rest of the family also can be seen as racist - breaking their rule only because Meghan is biracial?! The Queen has been around long enough to know that doesn't matter if they are right or wrong at the end is only feeding more gossip, creating more drama and headlines. This is exactly what is happening with all these statements from H and M. No matter how many leaks and personal statements come out from both side lets not pretend we will ever know what exactly is going on behind closed doors and who is the toxic or unreasonable one and who is the victim.

If they stayed in UK to live a quite life at Frogmore or anywhere else the security bill problem wont be as big. But they choose to move to the other side of the world while not representing the Crown with both UK and Canada footing the bill, royal protection officers traveling every few weeks back and forth or relocating their families (the carbon footprint and the cost is insane). I understand they want to do everything their way but there are obstacles because of who they are. Aren't we all have limitations and obstacles from our personal life situations?! We adjust and make sacrifices why they cant or shouldn't ?

Im just ready for all the drama to be over and everyone to move on. Intrigued how HM going to adjust to their new life of finding meaningful ways to be financially independent.

Just because this is how this family operates, does not mean it is the right decision especially in 2020. The Q did not utter words when she protected her favourite son but she did something else. Showed support and whatnot many times during this scandal, they went to church smiling the day after Epstein died...etc.

  51. I gather from the press that Princess Beatrice's wedding will be a "private" affair so would it appear on the individual schedules of the royals? I imagine that all of the Queen's family would be invited; a snub against Harry and Meghan would not look good at all for the royal family. Very negative and vitriolic press against Harry and Meghan seems to have been used as a diversion against coverage of Anddrew's problem, so Meghan and Harry would have every right to feel like not attending the wedding. Either way, they will be criticized. I'm sure the tabloids already have their stories written for every contingency. They seem to not only be setting out to destroy Meghan with racist and xenophobic stories, but are not set on a vendetta against both Harry and Meghan. The British media is on such a destructive path, I fear for Harry and Meghan, and am outraged on their behalf. The enormity of the what the press is doing becomes more evident everyday, and there seems to be nothing capable of bringing them under some kind of control.

Given how many popular destinations have been overrun by tourists to the point there is pushback by local governments, it’s a healthy adjustment to offer more local and sustainable tourism. It’s one way to keep it budget friendly and still helps the local economy.

    2. I think Omid Scobie now has a report called "True Royalty" on you tube. Royal reporters are coming up with shows on youtube.com. May be I am new to it; I discovered it after the recent shake up. Over all, I like Scobie's reports, analysis and outlook. The best part, is he is a good listener. Personally I shut off any conversation on line, radio, or any medium about any subject as soon as people start talking over each other. 54. When I see comments on their webpage such as that referring to the legality of the use of the word "royal" outside the UK, I do not think of them as churlish or ingrateful, I do not think they are being rude to the Queen -- I think of the information as being given as a fact to all those who might read tabloid stories to the contrary. I don't understand how their decision to not remain quiet and happy in the UK, doing what was asked and not complaining, is anyone's business except theirs. Seriously -- like many other members of the RF, their presence generates more revenue than it costs. We do not know every conversation that led to their leaving, and if they told us, we would call them rude, spiteful, etc. They really, truly have a right to their own lives without guilt! Yes, it was an expensive wedding, and was a boost to the economy in many ways. Should they really sell their souls for all the perks? I love them both and all I feel is sympathy for them.

    1. Certainly they have a right to retreat into private life. The Royal family has accepted that completely, however they don't have a right to use their royal status to make money and to claim that there are no legal impediments to this. Canada has laws which would constrain them so they should have fact checked this before publishing it.

    6. Anonymous at 18.53, as far as I know, the term „passive aggressive“ used to be a (US only) way of labeling someone as aggressive even though they are not actually acting aggressive, very convenient in World War 2 but dated now. Yes I think they could go back, the Royal Family is a family business as well as a family, and they could use the extra pair of hands. But the Sussexes would be fools to do so. Since they are no longer working royals, they are not limited to the Commonwealth, and I expect they will move to Los Angeles before long.

The status of Edward VII (king) and Harry ( 6th in line) is different. Ms. W. Simpson did not hold any actively working status within the UK, like Meghan did, The marriage acceptability, ceremony, BRF and the public’s participation are almost like “socially illegitimate marriage” though legally legitimate ( E&W / almost alone) vs legitimate, official marriage and ceremony of H&M. There is an off spring involved in the case of Harry and Meghan on top their marketability as a couple going on their own ((1936 vs 2020). Personally from reading Edward and Wallis stories, I found a consistent theme that, Wallis thought Edward will get over her. Her husband Mr. Simpson, Edward and Wallis all were living under the same roof with the knowledge that she was in a relationship with Edward. There is no third lover involved in M&H’s case. The kind of love story of Edward and Wallis is different from Harry and Meghan. There are so many differences, and the similarities are much fewer.

    1. It makes a legitimate sense that Canada will discontinue protection after they will become non working royals effective 03/31. If there is a special arrangement with Commonwealth countries members in such situations, it is a different matter. If Canada continues to pay for their security, it will stir political mess and unpleasant stay for the couple too.

Security! I think based on need, by order or “convenience arrangement” Harry will return to royal duties with a new decree after he settled his family in North America. This will allow him to have security and by extension security to his family in NA, to be paid by UK. If he commuted to Canada every other week to see Meghan during their courtship, he will be able to do the same under a new agreement with UK. Meghan still has patronages in UK, and her expected partial residency in UK will also complement such arrangement. Well, this is my wish for them. It will be untold disaster which will be costly and regrettable if they are left without security. It will be a reasonable compromise if all “independent financial” traveling costs for security be paid by H&M out of pocket, and / or arrangement from direct BRF resources.

  59. Anonymous @16:51 I don't really see any meaningful parallels between Harry and Meghan and Walllis and Edward, except both made decisions for the women they love. Edward abdicated a throne; Harry is sixth in line. Wallis was an American socialite and divorcee. Meghan, although both American and a divorcee, was an actress, is a humanitarian, and a self-made woman. Harry and Meghan are driven out because of racism and xenophobia on the part of the BM and a lack of visible push back against these abhorrent behaviours. I think back to their engagement interview, and in retrospect, I think how clearly they presented themselves. Their intention is to live a life of service, that whatever happened, they are a team, and they are a team because they love each other and are committed to the humanitarian causes and the desire to make a difference. Nobody had the creativity to make it possible for them to support the Queen ( I have no doubt of Harry's commitment to her) and not be beholden to the tax-paper, except for their security. Consequently, the Crown and country lost a couple who were doing effective work for their causes, and greatlly helped to make the Royal Family meaningful in the 21st century. It's a real shame, and makes the Crown, fiercely protective of "the way things have always been done" to protect itself, look stuck in the past. Meghan said that she didn't see herself as "giving up" anything to marry Harry, but
entering a new stage in life. Now, sadly, it is Harry, in a sense, who has to give up his home in order to protect his own family that he has said he has longed for his whole life. I wish them success and happiness, and the continued opportunity to do the good that they both desire. Now it seems that neither of them can live in their own country. It is terribly sad that it had to "come to this" as Harry himself has said. However, it will be great to see the continued success of Harry and Meghan's patronages and causes, such as the Invictus Games coming in May.

I think it was a lot of wishful thinking on our side and to early for the monarchy to embrace different approaches to living as a royal. I remember the comment of one of the commentators CNN invited to the marriage of Harry and Meghan. She is a woman of colour and a culture columnist for different British papers. Everyone was so enthusiastic about this ceremony and union. She said she was deeply moved because of her own heritage but clearly said: we’ll see what will happen after the confetti is cleared up and all this settles. It is a very different social landscape here than in the US. The old important families and a vigorous press- she called it - we will see what happens. Now I understand how much she already understood by that time.

I am German and no British Royalist but this couple opened the monarchy for me in a way I never experienced it before. Not that other Royals had not done a very good job, this is what you say anon 16:08. I am a long time reader of the Kate Blog as well.
But I was really inspired by Meghan and Harry and their energy to create. I feel Meghans joining the royal Family made a huge difference and meaning for a lot of people around the world who realised that finally this door is open. I think they made the monarchy meaningful to people who care less about the royal gossip like me. I have learned so much about the charities, humanitarian work Worldwide and very hands on approaches to achieve a lot. Not that other royals don’t do a lot of good work. I am just one of those persons where Meghan an Harry made it meaningful. Thank you Charlotte for this very good work of yours.

I think people exaggerate how dangerous it is for the three of them. The BRF is just one player in the big pool of very wealthy people, people with influence or political influence. I do not deny that they will need security. The question is how much. And I believe they made choices that makes it too expensive to let they cost sit with the government’s aka the people’s money. Harry didn’t choose to be born in this family, but people also didn’t choose him. It’s only fair and right that they solve this problem on their own. If “financial independence” means getting the bills paid by Daddy that’s their interpretation. I would say live within your means. I am also sure Prince Charles will be willing to continue to support them financially from the Duchy of Cornwall money. There is no hint in any of the official statements that that will stop. However it will obviously be more difficult for everyone if they continue to live overseas most of the time, particularly if they move to a non Commonwealth country. Frogmore Cottage was ideal as it was within the Windsor Home Park and easily policed. One of the reasons British Royals holiday in their own estates is because it is easier to provide security and close off access to the paparazzi. Flying British security people backward and forward from UK will have been much more difficult and expensive. I don't see what the problem is about them living in UK with occasional trips away, even if they give up most royal duties. They can live as privately there as in Vancouver and have easier access to their charities. They expressed a wish to retain their links with the Commonwealth and the headquarters of that organisation is in London. The sensible thing to do is for them to rethink how to achieve their wish for more privacy to bring up their children while retaining their extended family links. Archie would benefit from having contact with Harry's family as well as Meghan's.

    1. They do need security. They are very close to a future king of England. They can be a target.

  62. I love the video of the queens guard supporting Harry and Bon Jovi By playing his songs. Not a Major headline... since it would suggest collaboration And good will across the offices and heaven forbid anything could possibly interfere with the tabloid narrative....Erin in nyc

  63. The Sussexes cannot afford the level of security they currently need, it will probably be different in the future. The less quasi-royal work with its prior announcements and interaction with the public they do, the more they will be able to pay for their own security.

The Royal Family cannot afford another death after Diana, Princess of Wales, for reasons of public opinion. Also, in the unlikely event that the Duke of Cambridge and his family fall victim to some plane crash or skiing accident, the Duke of Sussex and his family are the only thing standing between the Crown and the Duke of York, so the Royal Family has a vested interest in keeping them alive. They can get security on Duchy money which is different from the public money (Sovereign Grant) that the Sussexes wanted to be independent from.

    Maggie – short for magpie
