"Proud Patron" Meghan Surprises Smart Works Client

The Duchess of Sussex surprised a young woman who has been supported by her patronage Smart Works in a video call recorded late last month. The charity, which supports and empowers women by preparing them to nail job interviews in style, today released a video. Meghan spoke to the aspiring psychologist ahead of her internship interview: "I think you’re going to be fantastic. I just wanted to be able to call in and tell you best of luck, and my fingers are crossed for you."

Speaking about the work the organisation is doing at this time, Meghan said: "I’ve been really proud to be able to be their patron, but it’s an easy yes when you have such incredible women helping you. It’s a pleasure to support them; you see how great they do and how many people they help, and that’s what it’s all about."

Meghan praised the client for being "a beacon of hope" and "focused on getting through this". Afterwards the client said: "I just wanted to say a big 'thank you' to you, the Duchess, and the whole team at Smart Works for making this possible for women all around the UK, because to see such work is truly inspiring and uplifting."

Smart Works included the following quote from the Duchess:

"It’s been such an honour to meet and learn from so many talented women in the Smart Works network over the years, and recently to see the amazing work they’re doing to adapt their programs to the reality of this pandemic. Their ability to continue to empower women and help them harness the confidence they need to succeed during this time is inspiring."

So many charities and organisations are striving to adapt their services to ensure they continue to reach as many as possible. Smart Works is no exception and over the past six weeks they have supported over two hundred clients through their virtual service. They have described the commitment, passion and dedication from their staff and volunteers as "overwhelming". Of course, we know Meghan's Smart Set collection meant over 10,000 workwear staples and bags were distributed across their offices across the UK - enough units for a full year. At the time, we couldn't have known how essential these items would be, with retailers facing unprecedented difficulties meaning "dropping off" items has been incredibly difficult.

Meghan wore the stylish Joseph sweater we first saw for the Queen's Commonwealth Trust round-table discussion at Windsor last October.

The garnet cashmere fitted sweater originally retailed for £235 before selling out.

For those looking for an alternative, J Crew's Cashmere V Necks sweaters are always a great choice.

The Meghan's Mirror team identified Meghan's necklace as the £135 Visionary Charm Necklace by London-based brand Edge of Ember. The piece is described as: "Inspired by vintage coins found in Asia, these modern-day talismans carry icons of good fortune. The Visionary Necklace bears a blue topaz evil eye to protect its wearer from negative vibes.

In some very good news, a spokesperson for the Sussexes confirmed to The Times we'll see Archie on his first birthday. I expect a new photo will be released to mark the day.

  3. Great surprise to pop in and find our girls beautiful face. I love her at home look and even find her to be a little more full of face then usual. Then again, ZOOM gives us all a different look or dare I say, not to start this conversation perhaps a special announcement in a couple of months. Loved Harry reading as well. Looking forward to seeing the b'day boy!

  6. How does she manage to look like a teen? She’s a totally committed patron, and continually proves her desire to be of help to others. Lovely to see her.

If I were the client, I’d be so excited about this! As ever, Meghan steadily gets on with her work. How nice to see her, and in that sweater that was one of my favorites from 2019! She does look fuller in the face, but it’s probably the zoom angle with her hair pulled back. Either way, she is always so pretty.

  8. Hello Charlotte,

I think Harry and Meghan will show a photo of Archie, maybe, and thank the causes launched by Sussex supporters for his first birthday (Sussex Great Forest and #ArchieDay).
