Duchess Meghan Marks Smart Set Anniversary

To mark the first anniversary of the Smart Set collection, the Duchess of Sussex joined three clients who were successfully supported by her patronage Smart Works in achieving their career goals. Meghan told Charlene, Angieszka and Karla that the true success of the organisation and its amazing team of staff and volunteers is "what it does for you inside". She added: "It’s what is built within, that is the piece that you walk out of that room with and walk into the interview with."

News of the Smart Set collection was revealed in the September 2019 issue of British Vogue which Meghan guest edited. The project, eight months in the making, brought together British retailers John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Jigsaw and Meghan's close friend Misha Nonoo to create wearable, classic and versatile pieces, designed to serve as ideal choices to mix and match to help Smart Works' clients sail through their interviews with confidence. It all began in January when Jo Bennett, head of womenswear at John Lewis, received a call out of the blue from Meghan. The tote bag sold at John Lewis was perhaps the most coveted piece in the collection.

During a speech at the launch, the Duchess said: "As women, it is 100 percent our responsibility I think to support and uplift each other; to champion each other as we aim to succeed, to not set each other up for failure, but instead to really be there rallying around each other and say, 'I want to help you'."

At the time, neither Meghan nor Smart Works could have anticipated the enormous challenges ahead due to the pandemic, and just how desperately needed the collection would be.

Smart Works CEO, Kate Stephens said:

'“The Smart Set Capsule Collection has been a revolution for our wardrobes. When we meet a client, who wants to look chic and smart, we have four beautiful wardrobe essentials we know we can reach for. The collection has elevated the Smart Works experience for so many of our clients and the generosity of our supporters means we’ll be able to continue supporting women with pieces from the collection for the year ahead as well.”
The team at Smart Works would like to take this opportunity to thank The Duchess of Sussex for her continued support of our charity, the retail partners who came together to help create the original collection and the wonderful supporters who purchased pieces and helped fill our wardrobes.'

Meghan was delighted to hear all three women landed their jobs, with one lady receiving three job offers from three interviews. "They really coached me and got me ready, I felt so confident … they sent out the clothes and they fit amazingly, I put them on and that was the last piece of just feeling confident." Meghan also heard about the challenges of searching for another position after twenty years. Meghan replied: "As women, so often it's easy to forget all of your skills and your assets. Not that they're not there, but you need someone sometimes to point them out for you."

More from Smart Works:

'With over 3,000 clients coming to Smart Works in the last year and 1,000 women taking pieces, the collection has proved to be invaluable. In particular it has played an important role in ensuring the success of the new virtual service which was launched as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pieces from the collection are regularly sent out to clients in care packages ahead of job interviews, ensuring they look smart and feel confident despite not being able to come to our centres.'

As I said at the time, every person who purchased a piece from the collection knows its twin went to supporting another woman on her journey. Women supporting one another is at the heart of this effort and made it a very special project.

  1. This is so good to hear! I would love to see something like this happen regularly. Maybe not every year, but every other. Pull some different designers from the Commonwealth, keep the stock fully supplied, and to keep the wardrobe choices up to date.(I know the pieces were pretty timeless but all fashion shifts just ever so slightly over time).

  5. I have the dresses, they look like high-end crepe , very comfortable and I always get compliments when I wear them. They are very basic in style, so you can really play with accessories and shoes , tights or leggings to get different looks.

    1. I have the dresses as well and love them! Such a great, solid base to then jazz up depending on my mood and occasion. I would love for them to launch a second collection--would be thrilled to support again. Perhaps a work-from-home capsule collection? :) I'm so impressed with how many charities have adapted to COVID circumstances. The care packages are a wonderful idea to still lift women's spirits and confidence while in-person consultations are unsafe.

  7. She really is the duchess of solutions, and I wonder if the women who regularly donate find themselves adding some basic items to their donations. I hope this is OK to say - what I enjoy about many of Meghan's "groups" is that a majority of the recipients are people of color, like the bakery she promotes. I'm tired of seeing the usual group with one person of color. And the US Vanity Fair had an excellent issue, devoted to the BLM movement. I live in a small Texas town and let's say we do not share a philosophy.

  9. As we say "From evil we get good ...", just to say that despite everything, in the long run, all this does a great good to the Sussex couple who find their way, a way that grows into a great one.success. I am so happy for them, especially the latest news about the full house repayment did me a lot of good! I was tired of hearing those lousy attacks on them via this debt. Bravo Meghan, these quick achievements despite the bad weather of the Covid are remarkable!

  10. Cute. I'm really, really wishing all the best to these women and really all women starting a new job, looking for a job or juggling their old job and their family life during this uncertain time. On a lighter note: I'm loving the little we can see of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's new home in California and its lovely tasteful décor, well done!

This is so wonderful to get an update on one of Duchess Meghan's patronages. She did and does so much work behind the scenes for so many causes, it's nice to see the public notices and videos for them. Thank you Charlotte for posting another lovely article.

  18. This has always been a great project for her and I think very “Meghan” . It brings women empowerment, creativity, coaching and fashion together in a way that is very effective and successful.
I liked Meghan in all stages of her life but I really love the woman she is growing into now. She has gone through a lot of light and darkness and embraced both. Radiant from within she has always been. But to me her presence has become stronger in a soft and calm way. This will attract many people to work with her and to trust her.

  21. This was one of Meghan’s best protects. So up her alley and so impactful for many, many women. I agree that it would be great to see future Smart Sets as fashion evolves! It’s nice that Meghan is keeping up with her patronages while busy forging ahead (with Netflix, etc). I remember being worried that we wouldn’t see much of the Sussexes after the split, but I was definitely wrong.
