Harry & Meghan Take Central Park by Storm for Global Citizen Live

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's New York visit culminated in style with the incredible Global Citizen Live.

Harry and Meghan's trip to New York was scheduled around the event, and their efforts in the fight for vaccine equity have been at the forefront of their minds this year. The relationships they've formed, and the experts they've spoken to, led to a close working relationship with Global Citizen.

The couple served as co-chairs of Vax Live in May. Meghan, who was in the late stages of her pregnancy, appeared virtually, saying, "The past year has been defined by communities coming together tirelessly and heroically to tackle COVID-19. And we've gathered tonight because the road ahead is getting brighter, but it's going to take every one of us to find our way forward." Harry took to the stage addressing the crowd: "The virus does not respect borders and access to the vaccine cannot be determined by geography. It must be accepted as a basic right for all, and that is our starting point."

I remember Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans was asked about getting the couple involved. He revealed more about early conversations with the Duke and Duchess: "We said we need champions of this campaign. Quite frankly they were immediately on the same page. It wasn’t a convincing -- it was a conversation. When I spoke to Megan, she said we really should call on the private sector to rally, and for American businesses to step up, so they convened a roundtable and they started getting to work, and they invited the private sector leaders to be part of the effort." Hugh added that they approached it with "sincerity, leadership and commitment".

Taking to the stage to rapturous applause.

Harry and Meghan were delighted to greet those gathered. Harry said, "Look at all of us here! 60,000 strong, together in New York City. Are we prepared to do what’s necessary to end this pandemic?” Meghan added, "It is so good to be back here with all of you. Look, we know that it feels like this pandemic has been going on forever -- we get it. It’s been a lot and some people are just over it, but, if everyone’s over it, it’s never going to be over. There’s so much that we can do today -- now -- that can get us closer to ending this pandemic, and that’s why we’re all here. We’re able to be here tonight because the most brilliant scientists, researchers, frontline workers and selfless public health leaders have risked their lives to protect our global community. They are our humanitarian heroes. While in this country and many others you can go and get vaccinated, billions of people cannot."

"My wife and I..." I think this is the moment of the trip.

Harry added: "Doses are being bought up and stockpiled by wealthy nations, and later sent to developing countries, often when they are close to expiration when it's already too late. Dose sharing commitments are so important and appreciated, but this cannot just be a charity operation. It's a fundamental human rights issue. My wife and I believe when you're born should not dictate your right to survive." We're battling more than the virus alone. This is a battle of misinformation, bureaucracy, lack of transparency."

Harry asked the crowd: "Do you think we should start treating access to the vaccine as a human right?" The reaction was a resounding "Yes!". The couple also spoke about the conversations they had with experts during the week.

People reports:

'Meghan said "This year, the world's expected to produce enough doses to meet the target of vaccinating 70% of people in every single country. But it is wrong that so much of the vaccine supply has only gone to just 10 wealthy nations so far, and not everyone else. It's just not OK."

"Guys, we have what we need to vaccinate the world, but the experts told us, here's what's getting in the way," Harry, 37, added. "They said many countries are ready to produce vaccines at home, yet they aren't allowed to, because ultra-wealthy pharmaceutical companies are not sharing the recipes to make them. These countries have the means, the ability and the workers to start manufacturing. All they're waiting for is the vaccine intellectual property to be waived and for the vaccine technology to be transferred over. And by the way, many of these vaccines were publicly funded. They are your vaccines, you paid for them."

The Duchess was delighted to introduce "champion for global peace and equity, a leader and new friend", US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield. The couple held a meeting with the ambassador on Friday.

Taking to the stage, the ambassador declared, "As the Duke and Duchess said, we need to stop the spread and get vaccines to everyone. That's why President Biden announced this week we're donating another 500 million doses."

How fabulous did the Duchess look this evening?

Meghan chose Valentino's Floral-Embellished Mini Shirt dress. The shift dress is made in Italy and features short sleeves and a round neckline. It's a splendid look for Meghan, a perfect choice for the concert, and very much reminiscent of her style when she starred in Suits. It's available at Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus.

A closer look at the silk floral embellishment.

Meghan's drool-worthy bag is Dior's Medium Lady D-Lite Bag (with thanks to What Meghan Wore).

Described as: "The Lady D-Lite bag embodies the House's vision of elegance and beauty. The sleek and refined style is fully embroidered with a black Cannage motif and the front features a 'CHRISTIAN DIOR' signature while the thick 'D.I.O.R.' charms in pale gold-finish metal enhance and illuminate the silhouette. Equipped with a wide, reversible and removable embroidered shoulder strap, the medium Lady D-Lite bag can be carried by hand, worn over the shoulder or crossbody."

Meghan accessorised with Diana's Cartier Tank watch and her Cartier Love bracelet.

And her Cartier wedding earrings.

Meghan completed the look with black satin pumps.

It's been an incredible three days. The welcome Harry and Meghan received clearly meant a great deal to them and following behind-the-scenes preparations, meetings and planning, we are firmly seeing the direction the couple plan to take Archewell in. The itinerary leading to tonight's concert was well considered, covering important issues affecting all of us globally. I have no doubt we'll see collaborations and partnerships stemming from them. It's been far too long, and I know we all look forward to seeing what's next for these two :)

Covering the past three days has been a reminder that while much has changed...

...some things stay the same.

  1. Loving the dress: it's very pre-royal life Meghan. And I'm absolutely in love with curvy Meghan, I swear her body always looks the best right after a pregnancy. I'm glad she embraces her post baby body instead of rushing to lose all the baby weight before appearing in public. Lastly I hope they're really back and Meghan won't just go back into super private mode as soon as they return to Montecito because I'm so tired of constantly hearing and reading things about them and never actually getting to see them out and about: if I have to endure the rumors and drama, I'm gonna need appearances and events and beautiful images of them holding hands and looking adoringly at each other to counter-balance it all. Things like this New York trip: it was just what I needed honestly, a breath of fresh air.

    1. It's always fun to see famous people out and about; although I would not be surprised if they go back into private mode once they return to Montecito. Lets not forget this couple have been through the wringer and Harry has stated a couple of times that the clicks of the camaras remind him of how his mother died. For this reason I would not be surprised if they only go on appearances when they feel is necessary.

As for me, I just stay away from the tabloids and only visit blogs/sites where you can see information about their endeavors, that's all that matters. They roll with the punches and continue to work.

    2. I know you come from a place of support for Meghan, when you say you're glad she's embracing her post baby body.
Still I really don't know why we should ever comment on a woman's body. Not during pregnancy, not after nor at any other time. It is just none of our business.
I might be a little sensitive there. I just feel that we as a society are so used to rating and judging women's bodies that even a positive comment is a symptom of that sense of entitlement around women's bodies.

  4. I am so thrilled to see Harry and Meghan's triumphant return to the global stage -- in a capacity that represents their keen awareness, passion, and commitment to global issues. This feels like the position their abilities require. They are a dynamic duo. Meghan is a natural at public speaking, and Harry is, too.

Harry was so touched by the crowd's approval of his wife, his voice cracked in that last "laugh" before he resumed with a slightly raised voice. He recovered well. But he was deeply moved to receive such enthusiastic approval of his choice of wife, after so much hate has been directed her/their way.

It always warms my heart to see the love these two have for each other.

Thank you so much for your great coverage of this wonderful event, Charlotte, and for your coverage of their three days in NYC.

  5. What a perfect look! I also am glad Meghan is embracing her body in its postpartum glory instead of rushing to look as if she hadn't just given birth a short time ago. Love love love the look and more importantly, the message! Its so wonderful to hear both of them speak...Meghan has always been strong in this area, Harry has really upped his game and seems more comfortable each time I hear him. I notice he's really making an effort to enunciate more clearly than he used to back in the UK lol.

  10. This little dress was a wonderful surprise! Meghan looked completely adorable, reminding me of the '60s "flower power" dresses. The looks on Harry's face were so wonderful to see; he has indeed become a better speaker and the love between the two is so heart warming. Meghan's black purse is indeed drool-worthy -- I love it!

  11. So glad to see them out & about. This weekend of events was fun to watch. The white shift dress is my favorite. If you are carrying a bit of weight in your torso, showing your legs can make you feel powerful. (Not a criticism, she gave birth just a few months ago)
I do wish that everyone could stop adding up the cost of everything, jewelry & shoes et al., & slamming them for getting onto a airplane or into an SUV.
Anyway ta for the post & here’s hoping for more public events soon

  12. I'm quite mixed about the New York visit this dynamic duo has undertaken. They are so powerful and yet, when I look at the choices by Meaghan - (3) coats at $12.9K and a dress and purse for a charity event totaling $10.3K - it makes me wonder. I absolutely love the little Valentino dress however, would have been even more impressed if she showed up in Tory Burch or Michael Kors (even J Crew slacks). Hard to see when the words "Defeat Poverty" are on the screen. They have a powerful (and impressive) brand and their appearance benefitted many but a 'balance' of sorts would/could be more powerful IMHO.

    1. Elle, I share your feeling of wonder over the clothes costs, although I extend my thought to all members of the RF and all women in the world who buy these clothes. They are beautiful but people don't need clothes that are so expensive. That said, I think Meghan needs the clothes to continue interest in her "outings." If she always wears "common" clothes, she would miss that wow factor that is needed for publicity. Just my thoughts.

      Delete
    2. Dear Elle, I have been thinking about these issues as well. I tried to look at it from many different perspectives. After all I feel it is probably impossible for them to do everyone right. I was not born into a wealthy background. So I felt critical of demonstrations of wealth for a long time.
Now I am in my midfourties neither rich or poor and absolutely content with my life. The gap between wealthy and not wealthy is certainly widening. But it won’t help if rich people turn up in poorer areas or charity events in more affordable clothes. Harry and Meghan live in a prestigious and super rich world and I feel they want to attract people of these powerful backgrounds to give their attention, money and care to the weaker parts of society.
Some call it red carpet philanthropy- I would not be that cynical or judgemental because after all everybody is where life put them. For people from rich and powerful backgrounds it is their way to dress. It could attract them more to engage in these areas when they can be themselves and all moral or shame issues can be excluded on all sides. Harry and Meghan make these efforts look cool smart AND compassionate. It is very important to have them as role models for the rich and prestigious minority in this world to get involved.

      Delete
    3. In fair play, let’s condemn all wannabe philanthropists for their expensive lifestyle then. That should included all royalties and billionaires like the Gates and Sir Leonard Blavatnik and multi-millionaires who want to do good works and get an OBE. Least we be accused of targeting a woman of color for daring to wear expensive clothes AND championing social causes at the same time. After all how many houses do rich people need? The UK isn’t a big country and it has a terrible housing crisis. Point here, lots of glass houses all around. Sure criticize Meghan but don’t leave out all the others. Otherwise, it’s an ugly look.

      Delete
    4. To be fair, I do not think that only Meghan has received criticism on that front. Nany celebrities (off the top of my head Angelina Jolie, Emma Watson) have faced such (valid IMHO) criticism, including Kate. And the discussion on celebrity/pop culture activism and the debate on its pros and cons has existed long before Meghan (I remember debating it at school in 2013). Of course it would be borderline hypocritical to wear only cheap and accessible clothes. But from that, to not wearing a single item below 500 dollars, and most reaching above 1000, well there is a wide spectrum that I felt was insensitively disregarded.

      Delete
    5. Elle, I work in the Human Service field and I know people in poor neighborhoods cannot even afford Tory Burch/Michael Kors/JCrew clothes unless is a dupe or received as a gift. So should Meghan/celebrities/billionaires/royals wear clothing from Walmart/Target every time they make an appearance or make a donation the less fortunate? Should they also leave their mansions/castles and live in a poor/middle class neighborhood?

Believe me the children and their parents did not care and at the same time they are not dumb-they know H&R are loaded. All they care is that someone famous (a role model that looks like them and looks that they made it) went to their neighborhood/school wanting to help/give back and they were happy to see them. You won't see them in social media dissecting every piece of clothing and jewelry clicking here and there to find out the cost of everything they wore at the visit.

If they don't dress the part (as they would do for other appearances elsewhere), then they might think: Are we not good enough?

      Delete
    6. Anon 19:47 Good point. Walmart clothes to see "you" but couture for "important" events. And it would be acceptable for Meghan to receive clothes free or discounted now that she's not working for the RF, wouldn't it?

    7. You don’t read so many comments telling Kate to stop wearing the expensive outfits and royal jewels (with dubious history) on the Kate blog. You tend to see more debate about preference over her hair dos, hem line length, etc.

With Meghan, there’s a compliment accompanied with a BUT added at the end. FYI, black and brown professional women face this type of criticism all the time. It’s the no-win situation where you must dress professional, sometime even more buttoned up than the social milieu requires to get through the front door without getting hassled by the front door gatekeeper. Then you get the criticism of being too spendthrift. You can’t win. And it’s why so many white women will never get this. It’s what we call the “uppity syndrome” at play.
      -sigh

    8. The defense that “it’s not only Meghan” who receives criticisms over wealthy lifestyle is the same as when the Obamas were criticized for spending too much money on couture fashion and golfing too much. These comments attacking the Obamas for being privileged and for their supposed wealth in the WH disappeared of course, forgotten once the other guy was in the WH. Never mind that the Obamas’ wealth paled in comparison to the Trumps or the Bushes. It’s the same for Meghan when she was a single woman. She paid for her own wardrobe and her personal social media accounts reflected her interests in fashion, social causes, food, travel and work. None of that has changed except that she married Harry. A British prince. That’s what some people can’t let go of. Meghan and Harry’s combined wealth is a fraction of what the royal family’s personal wealth. Meghan and Harry are earning their own way now.

The attempt to tar Meghan with this profile of breaking royal protocols, upsetting the Queen and Kate and ruining Harry and a money grubbing, crass American is ongoing.

The ironic thing is if you really care about wealth distribution and wealth inequity, one of the biggest symptoms is the British royal family. A meaningful conversation would start there.

    9. Most likely what those children of that age and for that matter any socio-economic children of same age will remember her primary color red outfit, her hair, her high heels, the book, what she looked like, how she spoke and who she came with. Price tag is for adults, the media, and fashion world. She likes fashionable clothes and has the means to pay for it or receive it as commercial value gifts. It is not like some one who goes to all their businesses in under $100.00 outfit suddenly showed up in a $10,000 outfit for a visit to underserved community. Ultimately, what will crystalize is the intention of the visit, and sincerity of purpose. Was it to promote Proctor and Gamble as well as her book? - may be for a dual purpose of give and take? Most likely it was a mutually beneficial visit for the couple, benefactor, and the recipient too. She also looked comfortable in what she wore and met the curiosity of the fashion world.

    10. I don't think discussing the RF is relevant anymore on this blog. And I agree that the question of celebrities philanthropy is ambiguous. Dress expensively and it is unfeeling. If you don't, it is as if the people you meet are not worth it. On the other hand, expensive lifestyle of the wealthy can be felt as unfair.
It is interesting because H&M have chosen firmly the celebrity culture, which is also an economic model. You are well-known because you are well-known and the more well known you are, the richer you become. The richer you are, the best known. All those PR firms work in the same way, promoting a product, which are the celebrity themselves. They end up doing exactly the same kind of things. IMO H&M have embraced that model.

    11. Well said Anon 07:55, this is not just 'Meghan' thing it has been commented on and discussed in many other blogs about many others, the royals, Kate included, celebrities, the list goes on. It is also not just a symptom of the British royal family, it a symptom of how we put these 'wealthy' people on pedestals, applaud them for their efforts, and with the other hand tear the apart for their wealth, status, etc. Can totally see the debate on both sides, it didn't begin with Meghan and it won't end with her. Their appearances are sought after because of the high profile they lend to the cause they are supporting. All charities struggle with and fight for the donation dollars as they are critical to keeping it functioning and they depend significantly on philantropic efforts. There are many behind the scenes whose dedication to these causes and charities go largely unknown and they are the key players in making it all work. The royals and celebrities who are involved in charity work have a role and that is to bring attention to, and hopefully dollars to keep the services working for the people they serve. It's a circle and everybody has a part.

    12. Anon 14:40 and 15:56 It is the uppity syndrome. My husband does not read about the RF and does not care at all. However, he noticed while online all the ugly headlines about her, especially juxtaposed to coverage of W&K. He even wrote the Daily Mail a letter calling them out. :) I don't understand how one cannot dialog with your hurting family members, let alone allow people to work against them. I hope Meghan continues to be strong and find her path.

      Delete
    13. Anon 20:15, I don't know if its uppity syndrome, but a lot of journalistic license. While the British tabloids have a very mean edge to them, over here in the States there isn't an article about Kate without Meghan and Harry being mentioned practically every time. Many of the articles have stopped allowing comments because of the polarization between sides/factions. I think Anon 07:54 states it most clearly. This isn't about the royal family anymore, we the public keep trying to keep that dialog going. Harry and Meghan have adopted the celebrity culture, period. They have entered into that arena and have stated their mission and philantropic purpose and this outing and participation with Global Citizen clearly defined that for them. Like a life of service, wealth is not exclusive to the royal family.

      Delete
    14. I am enjoying this refreshing discussion. Lots of food for thought.

Celebrity culture includes the British Royal Family in my mind. It’s why the royal family turned out in glamorous outfits on the red carpet for the latest James Bond premier. It’s why everyday their stories are in the Daily Mail and other gossipy and entertainment news outlets. Certainly, graver news about Prince Andrew, the latest scandal involving Prince Charles’ private charity and OBE received more serious coverage. (I think the Queen should re-think the Order of the Empire. Rename it the Order of the Queen. Anything but the British Empire in the 21st Century please.)

Prince Charles’ latest headache encapsulates the problem of philanthropy. Nothing is for free. There’s always a bill to pay and unfortunately the ones who have to pay are the poorest people because they don’t have legions of tax and financial advisors figuring the best way to avoid paying taxes and so forth. The common people don’t get a say in a bill carving out special exemptions and so forth. We are the last to know and the first to feel the pinch.

For every VIP visit to our facility, it costs us money. There’s extra cleaning, painting, extra staff, security, admin time, special drinks/food to order, flowers, and essentially closing the facility for a part of the day during such a visit. Yes, it’s nice to be profiled, but once the posh people leave, it’s back to struggling for funding to keep programs and services going and hiring adequate staff while paying them a quasi living wage. Things are much tougher with the pandemic, but the government constant budget cuts over the years have really made things worse.

That’s the truth of it. If celebrities, including the royal family, can raise money on a telethon or via concert from people and send the funds directly, that’s the best method. It’s far better than soliciting OBE for generous donations from the rich few. It’s certainly more transparent and honest and avoids the pretentious Debrett’s peerage problem. -m2p

    15. I agree that this is thought provoking conversation - I'm grateful for the comments and additional thoughts. Trust me, it wasn't easy to post my 'thoughts.' It was just that I was surprised with each outing they undertook - two brown coats versus a rewear? I fully support H&M, they've been through a lot. One of the comments you'll read about Kate is that the British designer dress she just wore sold out - therefore driving the economy (and yes, that's the RF versus 'celebrity'). I get it, Anon 07:54 is right, there is an economy to it. And to be honest, at their status she could be "receiving apparel for free' now that they are no longer part of the RF. If I was the head of marketing at Dior would I send her that purse - yes, most likely. And if they did pay for them, the clothes most likely are a write off against their taxes and what Anon 01:00 said resonates with me as well.

When they made the move to the US I wondered what they would do and after the Oprah interview "felt" for them like many of you most likely did as well. I got hooked on the RF because of Diana. Now, that was a different time but IMHO, there was truthfulness and honesty to her. I hope H&M continue their success and believe me :-) I can hardly wait to see their children down the road. I hope that HM poses for a portrait with all of her great-grandchildren for next year's Trooping of the Color and that Archie and Lily are part of it! Can't wait.

Again, I appreciate the comments and thoughts.

    16. I am a fan of both blogs but I find that it’s here that discussions drift into more serious side and with more bite. It’s understandable and in many ways reflects why Meghan has such a difficult time as Duchess of Sussex from the get go. People have clamored for her and Harry to be stripped of their titles, including Harry’s title as a born prince. It’s call erasing a person. This was predictable. The UK has a race issue which to this day, its various institutions refused to acknowledge. I can’t tell you the effort my organization goes to, especially for visiting politicians and royals, to trot out our non-white staffers and clients for photo ops because the VIPs need to project that impression to appear diverse and inclusive. It’s a sham.

Meghan entered a world of of white royals here in England. The problem with Meghan was she came from the US with its well documented history of racism. Here in the UK, it’s more subtle and the institutions themselves see themselves as not like the Americans and thus not racist. The royal family never had to really address the racism from within. The country can’t even barely acknowledge the toxicity of its empire building preferring to focus on what it sees as accomplishments like building the railroad and expanding universal education and so forth in far flung colonies. It avoids the fact that railroads were built on near slave labor to take rich resources out of a colony to enrich England.

The Americans are copying the Brits by trying to ban “critical race theory”. The soft faces of racism is to try to deny actions that are racist by making it seems to affect everyone. It’s an effective tool but when you look at data, it’s undeniable how much more the “everyone”affected tend to be poorer, female and/or BIOPIC. -my2p

    17. In 2010, crown princess Mette-Marit reflected on "pietism", a somewhat loaded and negative term, as pietism frequently plays on frugality. The media more or less "exploded" as HRH had stepped out of bound (she loves Prada), however relevant the reflection when linked to sustainability and materialism.

I find it hard to listen to the super wealthy when they dress in the latest and most exclusive fashion. Royal women are particularly exposed; do they really need a new dress to step out? William talks about sustainability, while Kate is dressed in a brand new £1000 suit. Harry talks of ultra-wealthy pharmaceutical companies, while Meghan wears a Valentino and carries a Cartier, or a Dior on her arm. Both certainly cases of mixed messages.

      Thanks for an interesting discussion.

    18. This isn’t about couture vs main street fashion. The Daily Mail would like it to be about that while at the same time, its owners are using every means to seek tax shelters.

The low hanging fruit is women and their clothing. The easiest targets are BIOPIC and immigrants.

Whether it’s humble brag, pieties, or hypocrisy being thrown about, what people avoid admitting is the very system that sets up such inequities and preserves wealth disparity. The monarchy in my country is the epitome of that system. There isn’t a hint of meritocracy here.

This is about a multibillion pound enterprise propped up by government with carved out laws meant to benefit the royals, both the institution and the people in them, and the “special” relationship with the press and the various non profits and private enterprises, think tanks that reap monetary and prestigious rewards from their association with the royals.

Clothing is a cheap shot. Good for targeting women and treating us as if we are dolls and little girls. The real money grabbers are out in plain sight. The recent exposes with the Panama Papers, Pandora Papers, the money laundering parked in England real estate/housing market and buying access for citizenship, titles and medals. That’s the real crime IMO.. -m2p

    19. 12:53 - what you describe reminds me of politicians, not that I have issues with politicians. Politics is a part of life by any other name, or title. Your comment is food for thought. It seems there is a balancing act here; sometimes genuine, and other times hypocritical. A politician has to reach out to all aspects of society if possible, and get as many votes as possible. It is up to the "citizen" to determine what value is outstandingly important and what to follow. Time will tell if the end will justify the means. In the mean time, it is part real, and part entertainment.

    20. @05:37 That would be true except covid and what’s happening in the US showed “citizens” are easily manipulated. For US readers, Brexit is our “Trump” moment. Rich men who control the media and their partners, the enriched politicians, have provided lies and stoked fear of immigrants which resulted in a vote that has come to harm us. Brexit didn’t bring wealth. Instead it brought us confusion and bureaucratic chaos. As a small business co-owner, this whole thing has been a nightmare. We have labor shortages, food and good shortages, higher taxes. People are impatient, and embittered so readers can put that stiff upper lip myth to bed now please.

    21. @23:30 - Big changes can be messy. It crashes some unfairly, and lifts others fairly, or unjustly. Brexit is a MAJOR change with COVID overlapped in the process. The news and what you stated matches the current evolution of Brexit and COVID in UK. Wealth, citizens health, and happiness matters. To be an owner / co-owner of small or big business is "independence". It comes with a cost or gain, like most other things in life. Once again change will happen some years after Brexit and COVID. I hope it will work out in favor of small business owners. Over all there seems to be one common factor in politics and global citizenship - power in its various levels and forms. Power /or wealth which shares justly as well as help guide in" the skill to fish" is a blessing. Power in the hands of those who are oppressors, exploiters, and dividers is a curse in disguise. Both sides are the reality of the world. Of course in politics the majority prevails. Keep in mind the quote, "Be the change you want to see" - challenging yes, but many have done it. Institutions, organizations and associations are important pillars towards change. Media plays a significant role, but citizens media watch dog with its own rating system can shake up the media's game however partisan big media can be.

    22. I’m sorry but “the big change can be messy” is a sorry excuse. The “mess” was totally foreseen and warned about. The complacency and tolerance for the “mess” will not right this ship anymore than the “be the change you want to see”. This isn’t a Nike commercial.

Citizens have stood up only to be disrespected, lied to, ignored, thrown down and arrested. The higher costs we have to pay these days mean our business have shrunk in number of employees, customers, goods and services offered. It’s not a question of outlasting this. It’s a question what date we will fold by the end of the year. Our politicians and royals are inured from such calamity. Prince Charles can eat organic and preach it, but for the rest of us, we don’t have the means to live off such a large inherited duchy and only recently decided, after much bad publicity, to pay tax on it. He also gets to veto any changes to laws that are passed that may affect his estate. What Charles preached is not sustainable nor can be copied because it takes a lot of carbon footprint and a great deal of resources to maintain his environmental champion image. My eureka moment came with Brexit and Covid. I realize to live as a royal, a person can’t be an environmentalist or a champion of democracy. Their very lifestyle is the opposite of those two things.

    23. 20:59 - You are not alone in that outlook. I read UK news now and then. Almost all the comments which refer to this contradiction comes from people in UK, and the word is "hypocrisy". This leads to another kind of discussion. There is some kind of "dilemma" experienced by the royals ( as in PC and Co. / his sons are also active extension of his environmental causes and "activism") For example, PH said the reason he had to fly on private jet is safety / security issues for his family. You are living in the very system, and your remark regarding the contradiction of the system is a reality. In a funny kind of way, it reminds me of PH's remark, "they are trapped". When it comes to the environment, I think PC's passion comes from within and informed interest. It is good he can lend his name to the cause, and tries to prove the difference with his vintage car, garden, or whatever else. I believe he is genuinely into nature, and the protection of earth.

I know about "just do it" from Nike. I associate "be the change you want to see" more with the philosophy of BO 44 POTUS. The idea that power can be driven from the "citizen" is of course #1 by voting, and other activism as well.

Opinion on blogs matters, but where else can "citizens" sort out what needs to be done? To be honest with you, sometimes citizens ways of addressing their issues / grievances is not necessarily done in a reasonably winning and agreeable ways. Eg. UK "environmental" demonstrators blocking cars very recently, and may be even last week. Over all I don't believe every thing politicians preach before they take office. Much will be involved once they are elected; he/she will not make decision 100% alone. There is also interest and lobbying groups. Politics is what it is; unions can be their own politics too. This is when joining, being a member of an organization, or association closest to a person's values makes a difference.

I think when adverse change happens, to explore a different kind of business which meets the times makes a difference ( may be as plan B). Business in any scale has its own life with up and downs, sometimes challenging ( positively or negatively) and other times rewarding. I wish you all the rewarding, and along the way, the patience, wisdom, and flexibility. I sense you have all that; it is a matter of time. Time can test us all at times.

    24. I have read all the comments time and time again on this blog and while this discussion is interesting, I always wonder why Harry and Meghan's wealth and actions are applauded and the royal family's is derided? There seems to be a pass on anything that Harry and Meghan do regardless of whether or not it appears tone deaf or hypocritical. Oh, I am sure this will be responded to with the follow-up that they have 'earned' their money, they are a 'breath of fresh air', yet at this posting the bulk of their money comes from Harry's royal/privileged inheritance, so I am not so sure that the lines are so clearly defined as it relates to wealth. As far as Prince Charles and his Duchy, a large percentage of revenues from the Duchy are not kept by PC but instead it is distributed in charitable donations through the Duke of Cornwall's Benevolent Fund. Since Prince Charles became the Duke of Cornwall, while the Duchy is exempt from corporate taxes, PC has voluntarily paid taxes since 1995 and prior to that time frame he contributed 25% to the UK Treasury. Aside from the money to the Treasury, the Duke of Cornwall's Benevolent Fund was organized in 1975 to benefit the communities in Southwest England, and in addition the Duchy employs staff to assist with the land holdings, rentals, and financial investments that it manages on behalf of the Duchy. PC is not allowed to sell assets of the Duchy for personal gain, although news stations will report just a fragment of its limitations, what the entire Duchy is, what it stands for, and what it has accomplished. This operates in a similar fashion as any foundation such as Archewell, in that revenues and actions of such foundations are meant to benefit those in the community and are subject to careful scrutiny and fiscal stewardship. Archewell, nor Harry and Meghan, are exclusive in their overriding mission of giving back to the community, it has been done before and will continue to be done by those who find it in them, and within their means to organize and execute. While they should be applauded for following this type of philanthropic path, it's the way they are extolled and lauded for doing it that I find disingenuous. I wish them the very best in their ventures and truly hope that the people of genuine need are the ones who benefit, but to tear down an entire institution that has been doing this all along and for a very long time is hypocritical.

    25. I agree, 23:11. The BRF have done and do a lot for people in need. Because of their position they cannot be partial and have to support a very large scale of people. The only difference, is that H&M are now allowed to choose the causes they like and that they can be political. Well, I don't know what is more admirable, championing one's preferred causes or helping all kinds of people even if it wouldn't be your personal choice. I truly appreciate how the BRF tries to be neutral and balanced in how they choose and support their charities, so that no one is forgotten.

    26. In general, it is like comparing old world wealth with all its historical baggage vs. new world money. PH in his own words is using inheritance from his late mother's trust. Where they are now, and how they are using the money recycles it as a 21st century type of wealth. Some commoners inherit as much, or more than what he inherited. I think their added gain, charisma, net work ability with the right people, status, fame, and ultimately wealth is elevated by their dynamism as a couple as well as PH's background. Once again, the royal factor had helped them, but without their effort they can be forgotten as other royals had been. It is easier to look at their wealth and identify, and / or associate possibility than to think of a 1000 years monarchy / institution which amassed wealth in so many other ways which some people oppose.

Your comment about current situation in UK / may be specifically England, lingered in my thoughts w/o even realizing it. Some how I ended up exploring your part of the world beyond the usually exclusive popular news of the "firm" or politics. To have a general idea of current news is not enough in some cases. In a way your eureka moment had become my search to understand UK beyond news and other related interest. It is very important to be more familiar and if time allows, be knowledgeable about every parts of a country and its people. The news media, popular culture, "the firm", politics are the most talked about unless a person gives time to other aspects of how various classes experience life. I hope to be on my way to be understanding better. I hear you better now.

  13. Dear Charlotte, thank you so much for the juxtaposition of the second and third from the end photos! Indeed, for M & H, their love is their Super Power. Was then, still is.
Thank you for covering their events of the past few days. And yes, the white dress has all the charm!

  14. As always, this couple gives off a very nice aura and I don't know how to say it, but I really like Meghan's modesty and Harry's very relaxed and not introverted side: it goes well.
Thank you Charlotte, I hope we will see them again very soon, it is very exciting to see them in activity.

  16. Thank you for the great reports of the Sussexes' weekend in NCY. I thought they were very effective advocates for vax equity. Their words were straightforward and communicated ideas simply and clearly. It's exciting to see the direction of their humanitarian work and philanthropy going forward. It was also interesting to see the competence and professionalism of their Archewell team. And the white mini dress is adorable! Meghan looks so youthful and peppy in it.

Harry and Meghan co-chaired the vax-live event, but I was wondering if they actually co-chaired this concert, though. I tried to figure out who were the official chairs of this event, and I couldn't find any info that clearly stated it. Global Citizen has done some wonderful concerts. The one they did at the beginning of the pandemic was absolutely wonderful, bringing the world together.

    1. My understanding is that H&M didn’t co-chair GlobalCitizenLive. A corporate coalition was announced as co-chairs. However, since Vax Live, Global Citizen has been added as an Archewell partner signaling their continued work with H&M.

      Here’s the info on the co-chairs: https://www.globalcitizen.org/en/enquiries/press/2021/global-citizen-live-welcomes-iconic-elton-john-british-superstar/

  17. Two fashion questions...a friend said she read elsewhere (not sure where or how reliable) that the Dior bag was actually Diana's, not just a look alike? Also it was suggested that now that Meghan is not representing the Queen, she might be able to borrow designer clothes rather than purchasing items to be worn once. Any thoughts?

    1. I also wondered if Meghan and Kate had access to Diana's bags (clothes). It is such a gorgeous bag!

    2. Do you think she would pick Diana’s bag and customize it with her title? I think it’s a bit odd to do that

  18. My first thought was "dress is on the short side" but it’s not, it would be short for a working royal but it’s entirely suitable for a philanthropist. Lovely dress, lovely earrings, good to see them up and about and smiling. Must be really nice for them to be able to ignore any racist tabloids now.

  19. One thing about Meghan is her confidence and intelligence shine through. You see that even when she was a child. I watched her in “Suits” and then came Harry. I was afraid for her. The British media is cruel and dominated by right wing billionaire owners. I knew it was not going to end well for these two. My mum said that was the way the tension played out between the Queen and Princess Margaret, so I wasn’t surprised to see it between William and Harry. Even if Harry didn’t marry Meghan, there will be the Palace’s and royal press’ attempt to dim Harry’s popularity and his future spouse as Charles takes the throne and William becomes the Prince of Wales. The attention has to be on those in direct line to the throne which boils down to birth order and blood. Not about competence, fitness or character though there’s a lot of press PR that like to praise these royals. That’s a good hint there's problem when you see too much polish applied.

It has been such a whirlwind three years with many highs and lows. These two show great fortitude building a family and a life against great odds. I wish they had settled in Canada. While there are the usual vocal minority like those opposing covid vaccines and immigrants, the majority of us like them. I hope, when they are ready, we’ll get a few photos of Archie and Lili and maybe, a visit North.

This has been an interesting thread to read. First of all, thank you Charlotte for the coverage of the event. As for the fashion , I never liked mini dresses even when I was a child and my Aunt and older cousins wore them. I don’t really care what Meghan’s clothing costs. She is making her own money with Harry.

  21. I had not realized that the party celebrating Diana is this coming Tuesday. I don't feel the Sussexes are at all welcomed by the RF but there are many guests who are likely very happy to see them. If I were Meghan, I would not want to go but at least Eugenie and her family seem welcoming. H&M invited Sarah to their wedding, and I think that meant a lot to their family.

  22. It seems that Harry (and family) will not be going to the UK now, and I have lost hope of a UK christening, which may have been our only chance of seeing Lili soon. The christening would have included Harry's closest relatives and obviously that's not going to happen. I appreciate that the Queen continues her relationship with Harry and his family, but I remain mystified by the others. The way the monarchy works is so unhealthy for the people who are part of it -- and I want to be clear that I am not criticizing Harry's brother, just observing. William was brought up having private meetings with his great-grandmother because he was the heir, and of course Harry was not part of that. William must decide whether his uncle is acceptable to be part of the monarchy. He was brought up to think it is not acceptable to not embrace your birth role, and thus cannot accept that Harry is not there to be his backup. This is so completely unfair to put him in this position of judging his family -- I try to compare the British monarchy with a wealthy family that expects the children to take over the family business, but it stills seems so unforgiving. However, I do not understand how Charles can put out a statement that he "loves his brother [Andrew] but..." and say nothing about his son and two grandchildren. It would be a lot healthier if Harry's relatives said they loved him but still didn't understand his decision or whatever.

I think that it took me awhile to realize that the RF members are "real" people but now I wish I could go back to not being so aware of their reality.

  23. Allison, I’ve seen you struggle with this family and wish I can give you a real hug.

Once William had children, Harry became less important to the hereditary line. With that came the ?, what shall we do with the lad? Harry was immensely popular, 2nd to the Queen for quite a few years. It took a marriage to a biracial American divorcée to sink him. That’s more of a judgement on us Brits than anything else. This mess is on us. The royal family owns it and has ample opportunity to fix the relationship. The problem is the monarchy is hanging in a precarious place. Its survival in the current form rests upon a public popularity contest.

Things are very tough here for wage earners. Brexit is now a way of life with many known unknowns (lol) and more lies ahead. The pandemic reveals what a shamble and disorganized our leaders are and how having a thousand year old monarchy isn’t going to help us sort this mess out. These royals have no answers, but they provide a cheering section and are an expensive and lovely distraction.

British billionaires today are more composed of dual citizens/residents from Russia, E. Europe, Asia and the Middle East. (Our institutions embrace rich foreigners and abhor poor hardworking immigrants.) We launder a lot of their cash legally. There’s no real effort to stop such tax dogginess while austerity cuts and tax hikes are ever present. People see their local football clubs sold to rich billionaires like MBS of the Khashoggi murder fame. William as head of FA will shake hand and embrace MBS when the time comes. Money talks. Money wins. Money rules. That was the British Empire then and Global Britain now.

The stressed out, angry citizenry here sees Andrew as unpopular but redeemable and Meghan, unpopular and irredeemable. The victims here are women and that’s it in a nutshell. That isn’t fair because the system is set up to be unfair, especially for a BIOPIC woman and a foreigner. Harry was naive in this but it’s to be expected given how ignorant the royal family is about the many facets of racism. This isn’t a family that will voluntarily admit wrongdoing. The whole premise of the monarchy is safeguarded and codified (by law) to protect the special ranks and privileges of the BRF. The “never apologize, never explain” syndrome thrives.

My take (and many friends) is Harry is out of the family. He may be allowed back without Meghan. If the children are young enough and cute and biddable, they’ll be allowed back. If older, unlikely. My hope is Harry will make a success in his new home as he and Meghan transition away from the UK. Harry will always be a prince of the realm as long as there is a monarchy in Britain.

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
