The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Open the Nelson Mandela Centenary Exhibition

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex officially opened the Nelson Mandela Centenary Exhibition at Southbank Centre's Queen Elizabeth Hall today.

The Duchess arriving.

The exhibition explores the life and times of Nelson Mandela (1918 – 2013) and marks the centenary of his birth.

It provides insight into Mandela’s journey from young freedom fighter to becoming the inspiration for an international movement against South Africa’s violent and oppressive apartheid system. The exhibition is jointly curated by the Apartheid Museum in South Africa, the British Anti-Apartheid Movement Archives, and the Southbank Centre.

The couple were met by CEO Elaine Bedell.

A gorgeous photo of the couple inside the centre.

Born and raised in a rural village, Mandela joined the African National Congress where he became a leading figure in the fight against apartheid. Enduring life on the run, several long political trials, and ultimately 27 years in prison, Mandela developed a deep wisdom and a distinct ability to connect with others. As he famously said of his and others’ struggle against apartheid: ‘I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.’ It was not just his ideas, but also his magnanimous personality, resilience and charm that enabled Mandela to lead South Africa through a volatile transition. In 1994, he became the country’s first democratically elected president. He transformed the political landscape at home and around the world, becoming one of the most influential and iconic individuals of the 20th century.

In 1996 on a visit to London, Nelson Mandela said:

"The response of the people of this country exceeded my wildest expectations... I wish I had big pockets, because I love each and every one of you, and I'd like to fit you in my pocket and return with you to South Africa."

Kathi Scott, Executive Director of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund UK said 'Mr Mandela recognised that Britain was the heartland of the anti-apartheid struggle. Twenty-two years later, on the occasion of his centenary, it is wonderful and fitting that such an important exhibition comes to life at Southbank Centre in London, where so many people in this country will have the chance to continue his wonderful legacy.'

The exhibition is based around six themes (Character, Comrade, Leader, Prisoner, Negotiator, Statesman), and is made up of information and photo panels, along with films and archive items from different periods of Nelson Mandela's life.

Harry and Meghan toured the exhibition and at each themed panel.

They met people associated with the exhibition and with Mandela's work including Andrew Mlangeni, who stood as an accused on charges of sabotage against the then apartheid government during the Rivonia Trials, and spent 26 years imprisoned on Robben Island.

The Duke and Duchess also met Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter Zamaswazi Dlamini-Mandela.

The Mail Online reports:

'Nelson Mandela's granddaughter said today that the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex's stance on 'justice and fairness in the world makes them a shining example for the youth of today'.
She said: 'Today's event is hugely significant - not only because we are here to celebrate the life of a great man in history, but also because we are able to educate the next generation, that we must never repeat the mistakes of the past. The visit of Their Royal Highnesses Harry and Meghan is a great honour. I hope by being here today they can be huge advocates for the exhibition so that as many people as possible can learn about what my grandfather was about.'

Omid Scobie shared the full quote from Zamaswazi Dlamini:

Harry and Meghan viewed the Robben Island Bible - which was actually a copy of Shakespeare plays disguised as a Bible.

The Robben Island Bible.

They met Paul and Adelaide Joseph, Anti-Apartheid activists and close friends of Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela.

The royals heard speeches by Lord Peter Hain, Chair of The Nelson Mandela Centenary Committee, and Elaine Bedell, Chief Executive of Southbank Centre, before joining those present in celebrating the official opening of the exhibition.

Queen Elizabeth Hall reopened in April 2018 following almost three years of renovations with world class, environmentally-improved new facilities for audiences and artists. It was the perfect choice of location for the exhibition.

Jeppe Hein’s Appearing Rooms Fountain is a hugely popular attraction at the centre. Shooting jets of water into the air, the fountain creates rooms that disappear as quickly as they emerge.

Harry and Meghan departing.

A video from the engagement.

Meghan wore the blush pink Sleeveless Trench Dress by ethical Canadian label House of Nonie.

Made in Canada, the $1085 piece is described as "A light trench coat from the Nonie SS18 collection. This sleeveless trench is cut from a stretchy mid-weight cotton blend fabric and features an open detail in the back and front tying straps."

The brand was launched by Nina Kharey a decade ago. The collections are made with a tailored and refined aesthetic, with a twist of Eastern inspiration. Kharey has always felt passionately about keeping the brand true to its Canadian roots. “I’m incredibly proud to be ethically producing in Canada and contributing to this industry here. It’s sad to see how much of it is a struggle when it comes to factories, and also sales.”

The dress is a piece from Meghan's closet. She purchased it while living in Canada last year. People reports:

“Seeing Meghan Markle, wear the NONIE Trench Dress today with such elegance and grace is beyond exciting!” Nina Kharey, founder and creative director of NONIE tells PEOPLE. “Her continuous support of Canadian brands is remarkable, and it is a true honor to be the first Canadian based ready-to-wear designer she has worn since her wedding earlier this year.”
And after a flurry of new fashion purchases, the $825 NONIE dress, from the brand’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection, is actually a re-wear from her own closet. The duchess purchased it from the Calgary-based designer while living in Toronto, just before she moved to London in the fall of 2017.
Taking inspiration from Eastern Europe and India, Kharey launched her minimalist brand in 2008. She later took a break from the industry, coming back in 2015 with a full collection. Meghan’s best friend and stylist Jessica Mulroney is also a fan of the ready-to-wear womenswear label.'

Global News Canada spoke to Nina Kharey:

“It’s just surreal, I still can’t believe it’s actually happened,” Kharey said to the Calgary Herald. “She looks stunning, stunning. I actually can’t get over how good she looks in it. I’ve been trying to imagine what she would look like in it.
Kharey said that Markle requested the dress last November prior to her engagement. It may have taken her some time to pull it out of her wardrobe, but it was well worth the wait for the designer who said that she immediately began to feel the “Meghan effect.”
“Getting that royal stamp of approval is just huge. … It is tough doing this from Calgary but things like this, when the most famous woman in the world is wearing one of your dresses and looking amazing in it, it does wonders for a brand like mine.”

Heaven identified Meghan's new pumps as the Dior 'Dioressence' pumps.

Meghan carried the Mulberry Clifton Bag is Rosewater Classic Grain. It is described as "The Clifton is compact, understated shoulder bag that cleverly camouflages an organiser's paradise underneath its neat exterior. Internal compartments provide ample room for essential." It's reduced from £750 to £600 at Mulberry and Italist.

The Duchess accessorised with stacking rings and a gold bracelet.

And a look at Meghan's earrings.

Meghan's Mirror identified them as the sold out Birks 'Bee Chic' white quartz silver earrings.

The Nelson Mandela Centenary Exhibition will run at Southbank Centre from 17th July to 19th August.

  3. At first glance, the outfit is a miss - fabric on the dress looks heavy (although it might not be), due to the way the dress hangs; the top half is too busy & below waist, too plain. Appears more "resort" than a public apprearance, IMO.

  4. I love a classic trench, but only as outerwear. Sadly this look is a no for me. It’s wearing her instead of the other way around 🙁

  5. This is the first "miss" for me. I'm just no a fan of the dress, sadly! I think it hides her beautiful frame!

    2. I have to revise my comment - I actually like it more in the video and some of the other pictures. It looks nice from the side and back, just a bit clunky from the front.

    3. To me, the only differences between how the dress looks on Meghan and how it looks on the designer's model are these:
      1. The collar is more spread out on the model and more upright on Meghan. Maybe pressing the collar differently would give a different look for Meghan but I think it looks perfectly fine as is.
      2. Meghan's dress looks to fit the tiniest bit looser...1/2 a size at the very most. Personally I like the looser fit for summer.
      3. Meghan's belt is tied in sort of a bow and the model's belt is "tied" more simply. This with the upright collar may contribute to some of the "clunkiness" in front people are mentioning. But in real life when moving around, a once-over knot like the model seems to have isn't likely to stay tied unless the fabric is "nubby" (this isn't) or a hidden safety pin is used. So all in all, I think the dress fits Meghan as it was designed to fit. I thought she looked great.

  7. Love the event! I think it’s great that Meghan and Harry are opening an event that supports the fight against racial injustice. Nelson Mandela’s impact on the world is so wide and I am glad Meghan and Harry are able to celebrate him and bring attention to a museum in his honor.

I want to like her look becaus it’s a trench and I love them, but I feel like the dress just swamps her. Perhaps if it was a bit smaller all around(length, lapel size) or maybe the material just looks stiff and unforgiving? Not sure but overall, I don’t love it.

      Love your first paragraph!
Bring attention to expositions, charities and other events is the main role of Royals.
I think this is a good outfit for going to the work, for someone it's beautiful for someone is not.
Harry and Meghan look fantastic, active, happy and that's wonderful!

    2. She needs her clothes to be tailored

      Delete
    3. In no way does the dress swamp her. It is not meant to be worn tight like a bodycon dress. She looks beautiful as always.

      Delete
    4. Agree with Granada. She left her short, tight look behind when she became a Duchess. She's not in Hollywood anymore. Not every look is supposed to be fitted to the body. Many styles have an elegant, easy fit. She's not a Kardashian.

      Delete
    5. Ummm, there is a WORLD of difference between a properly fitted dress and a skintight mini dress. I did not mention anywhere that I want her to dress like a Kardashian(to be honest, I have no idea what they wear as I do not follow them). In the last two months, she has worn multiple outfits that have a better fit than this dress does.

I do think the dress swamps her - the lapel size is approximately half the size of her head! And I don’t like midi lengths as a general rule, so I think this length just hangs on her. If the length hit her knee and the labels/collar were smaller, I think it would be great. Something doesn’t need to be skintight to be fitted properly.

      Delete
    6. I agree with you Katie C.H. and am baffled by those who took your comment all the way to Kardashian.

      Delete
    7. I should have put an exclamation point after the Kardashian remark. I know that you are correct, there is a world of difference between a tight dress and a properly fitted one. I was being cheeky. I just believe the style we are discussing does have a proper fit.

      Delete
    8. I don’t care for it particularly, but I will say her choice to wear something she already owned was spot-on. That’s the way to say, “This event is not about my clothing.” Unfortunately I suspect most people probably won’t find us that it’s not a new purchase, and she just hasn’t been in the role long enough to start repeating outfits from other events. But solid thinking, Meghan.

      Delete
    9. I like the top, but I am absolutely with you on the length. Midi with a normal skirt (in contrast to a peticoat or a pencil skirt) is just not flattering on anybody and makes everyones legs look wider and shorter- aka swamping a figure.
I also don't think the colour is particularly flattering on her but I know that light and personal perception have a huge influence on how we perceive that.
      C.

  8. I like it! The length, lack of sleeves, and blush hue set it apart. I think she looks stylish and fun. The Dior shoes are beautiful. I don’t love her hair but maybe it looks better in profile. But that’s a nitpick - she’s a gorgeous woman and I think she always looks good.

  9. Lovely! I do like Meghan and Harry's pastel colours together.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I love the colour on her, is there one which does not suit her? I don't think so. I think it can't be more fitted than this! Nice to see some ethical label, and something from "smaller" designers.

Also, it is such a good cause for Meghan and Harry too. And great to see them out and about in the middle of the summer. Likewise for Charles and Camilla! To whom I wish a very happy birthday! She is rocking 71 and just look at her numbers.

  14. I don’t think the dress looks great in these pictures for the reasons stated above, but it looks much better in some of the video I’ve seen. The fabric is definitely lighter and more dress like than it looks here. Also looks better fitted from a side angle.

The dress is pretty but for me she looks only ok. The wow-factor is missing. I liked the pants she wore at Wimbledon-this look was her and pretty. But I always think: does she have a stylist? Or what happened?

Maybe she wanted to not distract from the event, by making it about her outfit.

Overall, the look is just ok, but I don’t think it was appropriate for the event. It comes off as too casual. She should have kept this look for something different. They do so much with youth- maybe better for one of those days.

    2. It's very very unlikely that she would be allowed to wear a dress that wasn't appropriate or was too casual. She has access to advisers and is still a royal-in-training who wants to do her best, so I find it hard to believe that she wouldn't make sure her outfit choices are appropriate for each event.

She seems to like this length on her which I personally love so overall I think she did a great job.

    3. Thanks Helena for the correction, I did not mean to say Doria's parents were slaves, I know they were not slaves. Slavery was abolished more than 150 years ago anyway, so Doria's parents could not have been slaves anyway. To be exact Doria's great(x4) grandfather was a former slave. He chose the name Wisdom after emancipation.

This dress is just weird. And it makes her look wide (she isn't). The bag is way too heavy and we're back to the old messy hair. What happened??? The dress would be much less offensive to me if it lost the storm flap. I read an article the other day suggesting Meghan had "lost her sparkle" and was looking too Duchess (maybe it was related to the stuff Thomas Markle has been spewing again), but this was just not the look to counter it, in my book.

    1. I read the article you are talking about and I do not agree with the writer. Meghan has been dressing well and for her age, chic and elegant.
If Meghan is to live her life countering arguments by some of thse writers, she would be overwhelmed and I am glad she is not dressing to make critics "happy".
Meghan has been doing great transtioning into her new life, both behavior and fashion.

    2. I like the trench, but it does need to be fitted better.

Mostly I'm just amused at all the hate Meghan gets for her hair. I didn't know there was a rule that royal women couldn't wear messy buns?

    3. Cee Cee from KY17 July 2018 at 15:57

Anonymous, I don't think it's a royal rule, I think it's a life rule to not choose to look messy on purpose in a professional setting?

Breezy, I agree Meghan has been doing very well the past few weeks, which makes this even more disappointing to me.

      Delete
    4. A lot of it is racism/ignorance. Meghan's hair is thick and harder to style than, say, Kate's. I know because I have very slippery Asian hair that's also very difficult to style. So I often throw it up in a messy bun. Meghan for more royal/formal events does slick and style her hair, but for more casual daytime events she is just "being herself" and therefore doesn't feel the need to style her hair.

Unfortunately the stigma of having unstyled hair is just as harsh in African-American communities. I know because I'm a teacher in NYC. I once had a girl not come to school for two weeks straight. When she came back she was hysterical crying. I asked why. "My mom didn't have money for me to braid my hair, so I couldn't go anywhere for two weeks."

    5. Cee Cee from KY17 July 2018 at 17:49

Ivy Lin, I'm so tired of this being turned into a racial issue. I'm not commenting on the texture of her hair at all, nor do I expect that it should always be heat treated and "shiny". But having her bangs pinned back in a neat bun, is very different than this look.

I actually suspect her hair has been partially heat treated in these photos- perhaps blown dry with a round brush. Her flyaways could be helped with some hairspray, the bun could absolutely be pinned neatly, and her two side bangs easily pinned back. This look is a CHOICE. One I don't find terribly professional- but it is not based in racism or ignorance.

      Delete
    6. Cee Cee, I am mixed-race with hair that is similar texture and length to Meghan's. Ivy Lin is right that it's harder to style this kind of hair. It is not easy to have the perfectly coiffed look that you expect without TONS of product, which is damaging for this kind of hair. Adding to that is the climate in the UK which wreaks havoc on tresses like this. I know from experience because I have lived in London for several years. I agree that certain events call for that "perfect" look and I think Meghan has a nice balance of those hairstyles versus more relaxed but still chic hairstyles (like today) depending on the engagement. That way she can probably preserve the health of her hair.

      Delete
    7. It is though to an extent Cee Cee. Everything you just mentioned is easier to accomplish with Caucasian hair. Judging women’s hair, especially WoC is loaded with cultural judgments that are based in Caucasian expectations. She doesn’t have to style her hair to fit yours or anyone’s expectations, including The Queen. She has always looked professional. She may make different style choices than we expect, and may have struggles with her hair that we don’t understand. But she’s not obligated to fulfill our expectations around these issues. She is fulfilling them in so many other ways in how engaging and professional she is.

      Delete
    8. Cee Cee, heat treating hair, and then hairspraying it, and then pinning it, is a lot to ask of someone who is going to a museum exhibit. Why doesn't Harry get flack for wearing an open-collared shirt with no tie? Clearly this wasn't meant to be a big ceremonial event. It was to get some more publicity for an exhibit that celebrates Nelson Mandela.

So all the things you think Meghan needs to do to her hair in order to leave the house are sort of a racial minefield. WoC have a harder time getting their hair to look "white." Meghan did not show up drunk, unkempt, and obnoxious. She interacted in a very warm, polite manner with everyone present. There was nothing unprofessional about her behavior. So the fact that she doesn't have the same bouncy shiny curls as, say, Kate should not (IMO) be an issue, because the texture and makeup of her hair is so different.

      Delete
    9. Maybe the problem is that the style is called "messy bun." So people think, why are you being messy? If it had a name like "Relaxed but Chic," it might make people happier.

      Delete
    10. Threads like this make me dislike this blog. This is supposed to be fun people!

      Delete
    11. Kate has incredibly beautiful hair, and Meghan's hair is just gorgeous. I don't think Meghan could, or SHOULD, try to have the same hair as Kate, and I don't think Kate should try to make her hair look like Kate's. Did people try to make Sarah look like Diana? (probably did)

      Delete
    12. @Cee Cee. I agree. Meghan likes a messy bun- which is absolutely fine and looks actually very pretty with her face. Messy buns are also a very trendy hairstyle for many people. But she is working here. And she has proven that she and/or her hairdresser is absolutely capable to create a more serious aka less messy hairstyle. Even long before she married into the BRF. People making it a racial issue seem to miss that or haven't followed her before.
If you don't know her personally you cannot be sure what texture her hair really has. I will go by what she has shown us over the years and my conclusion is- she wears this kind of hairstyle because she wants to. Even caucasians don't fall out of bed with sleek hair perfectly in order. Having a professional hairstyle with all hair shiny and in place takes work for everyone.
I find this kind of hairstyle out of place for a working engagemant with a more serious backround. If she attends a movie premiere I wouldn't mind.
      C.

    13. And C. You don’t know the effort that may go into making her hair smoother. It may be 2 hours of prep vs 1. If so, She may not want to to do the full time for every outing. She would inevitably be criticized for that as well and be called a diva I’m sure. This is a classic challenge that those of us with ethnic hair textures face. I will speak up every time this is brought up. Everything ever mentioned about Meghan’s hair reads as racist to me, and if not at the very least biased. I know this as I myself have been on the receiving end of most of the same comments in real life about my hair styles. Those of us who are POC know exactly where these comments are coming from I don’t think Meghan’s hair, (or anyone’s for that matter, but this is especially sensitive for WOC) should be up for criticism, much as we aspire not to criticize people on body type or shape. As far as I’m concerned she has been nothing but professional and polished at every turn.

  28. I actually really like this look. First of all, I like that it's an actual pink, and not just that sort of faded blush pink Meghan likes so much. I think the faux-trenchcoat dress looks quirky and cute, and is the right amount of formal/casual for this daytime event. The only thing I don't like is the length. The midi-length just drowns out Meghan's figure. If this was just a few inches higher on the hemline it'd be really cute. I also think it could have been fitted better but Meghan seems to like clothes somewhat loose and baggy so that's her choice. Love the shoes and bag.

Second of all, what a great event to attend! Looks like a great exhibit that honors the life of a great man.

  29. I am a fan of both Meghan and Kate, but I am generally not a fan of Meghan's fashion choices. It seems like she is trying so hard to be chic, that she isn't wearing the clothes, the clothes are wearing her. A simple silhouette, combined with colors that work for her, and some jewelry would be a simple, yet sophisticated approach that would let the person shine through. Two examples of when she really got it right were the teal green in Ireland and the yellow sheath. Hoping to see more of that in the future.

    2. Interesting Rachel as she always looks to me as if she is wearing a full face of make up, from foundation to blush, to eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara and often eyelashes. True her foundation is not so heavy that you can not see freckles,(but freckles are not something that needs to be covered). She has incredible skin, no acne to cover up, but must feel foundation gives her a more finished look or perhaps evens her skin tone out a bit.

    3. Rachel, sorry, I just commented, in reading your comment again, I think we are in agreement, sounds like you just meant she did not wear heavy opaque foundation. Should not race through my reading of comments.

  31. Not a big fan of the dress either. I think the very oversized collar is what primarily does not work and agree with others it looks very stiff. Also not a fan of effervescent patent leather. The purse is nice but a bit big and bulky to be carried as a clutch.

Wonder if we will ever see her in a print?? She definitely has a hand in Harry’s outfits - his clothes today complement her blush pink perfectly. The warmth that they display to each other, and everyone in their orbit is incredible. They both genuinely enjoy these events and their interactions with the public. Great PR for the Royal Family.

  34. From a design standpoint, the dress should be colarless, the design is overdone, not elegant, the trench dress is an excellent idea their should be another row of buttons and a little more swing to the bottom, the tie and right shoulder panel are perfect but the collar should have just melted into the skin and not stand out, we get the style from other points, again I believe the designer made a grave error in such a large collar- not Meghan’s fault-color was spot on shoes perfect and I like the earthiness of her hair, a real out of Africa look- romantic and soft like she’s just been out on Safari. Her tailoring as been fine, frankly I get bored sometimes with the perfection of Bespoke, I hope Meghan keeps her slightly romantic sexy style.

  35. Not blown away by this outfit, but she looks very pretty, especially in the side views. I think long hair would have looked great. The dress looks different on the model---the skirt is fuller and more flowing. I think Meghan makes adjustments for her frame. Also, I am a bit used to this color by now, but I do think it is very attractive, especially with the matching shoes and bag. The focus is on the event, which celebrates an amazing man. Harry looks nice, too!

  36. Lovely engagement for Meghan and Harry. Harry always looks so incredibly happy when he's with his wife. I love her for loving him.

Not a fan of Meghan's fashion today. She's worn some very nice things since her marriage, and I applaud her for trying different styles, but they all seem to have the same thread - long, a bit oversize, and a fairly common color scheme. She obviously really likes that. I am starting to be concerned about the cost of her clothes. It may not be that long since she married, but she has done a lot of engagements and I don't believe she's repeated a major clothing item yet (the odd jacket maybe). She seems to still have the celebrity idea that you can't wear the same thing twice in public. Fair enough. I'm actually beginning to wonder if Jessica Mulroney is the best "stylist" for her. She'll find her way, I have no doubt, and I'm crazy about her for loving Harry. That really is all that matters to me.

  37. I must agree, a rare miss from Meghan. Love the hair and shoes and earrings but not crazy about the dress or bag. I do love that she’s keeping us interested by wearing unique and chic outfits. She’s bringing so much more fun to my little royal watching hobby, which was getting a bit boring before news of Meghan and harry was leaked to the press.

  40. I may be in the minority - I think this is a wonderful look for Meghan and it's perfect for the occasion - neither too formal nor overly casual. The fit, colour and accessories are all good and she looks youthful, fresh, and summery! A yes to this one, for sure.

  41. I think Meghan looks utterly charming today, and her pastel monochromatic look stands out among all the bright colour and pattern but at the same time doesn’t try to compete. It’s an outfit that is softly business-like and says to me that she is there to help celebrate Mandela’s life and not be the centre of attention. Her sparkly earrings were the perfect accessory. I’ve noticed that diamond earrings always effectively brighten her face. I also think the collar nicely frames the face. Her make-up was beautiful, and so was Meghan! I’ve noticed that the cameras always seem to capture a photo of Harry smiling at her which is lovely to see. I think it is becoming clear that Meghan will not often wear form framing outfits on Royal duty like she may have done on the red-carpet, but judging from pictures of her before Harry, she always seemed to like looser fitting clothes.

  42. First and most importantly, what an excellent exhibit and event. I had the good fortune of seeing Mandela in NYC back in 1989 (or 1990) not long after his release. I am still humbled by that experience. Re the Duchess, I guess I’m an outlier today - absolutely love her look. Maybe I love her choices so much because my taste is very similar. I don’t particularly care for form fitting work clothes - they are not comfortable to me. I am also so happy that her Duchess look is her own - not the typical royal colors and styles, which frankly look a bit matronly to me. I also love the messy bun. It says that she has her own style and will stay with it. For me, when she has deviated from the messy bun, it seems to always be appropriate for the overall look and occasion. Just my 2cts. I’d love to have that dress for myself.

I didn’t much care for the look in the first couple of photos, but it grew on me when I saw the rest of them. The Duchess seems to be able to pull off dressing in just about any colour! 44. Apparently I am in the minority here but I loved the whole look as soon as I saw the first picture. The same thing happened to me with the pink Givenchy from Trooping the Colour. Both times I was surprised that most commenters didn't like it. That's fine, though. If we all liked the same thing fashion would be pretty boring. Dress, bag, makeup, and even the hair are lovely IMO. The one thing I might possibly have done differently is the shoes. they are a tad bit boring. Something from her Aquazurra collection, maybe. Still, she looks fantastic. As to the fit, I think it fits the way the designer intended it to.

    1. BethNY,

Thank you! As you said, if we all liked the same thing, fashion would be boring and fashion should never be a boring topic to discuss. :-)
I like a little discussion on fashion, and I like reading people’s opinions on why something is to their taste or not. We don’t all have to universally love or dislike something as long as we keep it civil, in my opinion.
Personally, when I said this dress wasn’t to my taste, I just meant that it wouldn’t be something I would wear for myself. I don’t like bulky ties around the waist. My body shape is very similar to Meghan’s and I have a short waist and long legs, much like she does, and sometimes wearing things that tie in the middle can be tricky for me. When you’re short waisted, you don’t have a lot of curve and you tend to be more square in the middle, like I am. I can wear a tie waist dress if the bottom is fuller and the tie isn’t bulky, much like the Shoshanna dress she wore recently to watch Harry play polo. I loved that dress and thought it looked fabulous on her. The fuller bottom and less bulky tie creates a waist, or the illusion of more of a curve at the waist.
This trench coat dress almost looks too straight through the skirt, which makes her look straight up and down, and the tie in the middle adds bulk instead of creating a waist. That’s my reasoning for not liking the dress today. But again, it’s just my opinion. I’m not declaring myself an expert on the matter.
The color, however, reminds me of a band-aid, so maybe it’s just how it’s coming across on my screen. I’m coveting her earrings though. I love them.

  45. First of all, what a great event, which should be the main focus! However, I don't love this dress, but I like the color on her. She is beautiful as always, no matter what she is wearing! She is always so engaged when she is at an event. I wish she would sometimes embrace her natural hair. I hate when people with curly hair always straighten it (or worse when straight haired people perm it!!) On a side note, I don't like Harry's gray blazer and tan pants. Finally, I'm glad my wardrobe is not under scrutiny, cause there would be much for all to comment on!!

  46. I have a different take on this outfit, in fact this look. With H&M's love & strong emotional connection with Africa, along with Meghan's pre-wedding charitable work in Africa...... I think she was going for a) a subtle nod to an African Safari look b) laid back "royal" look via her messy bun, to relate to the tone of the others in attendance (i.e. "we are Royal but we aren't stuffy") & c) a nod to showing a fashionable coordinated ensemble with color & instead of what could have been a khaki look, she went with a lovely pink! Even Harry had a non fussy look & with an open collar. That's my take. I think the dress fit the way it was designed to fit, & I think it ticked all the boxes to strike the tone she wanted to strike for this visit! That's my 2 cents!

    1. Becca, take me to it. LOL. My first impression of the dress is that it is a safari like design. I don't think it's the most flattering dress she has worn, however, she is getting on board with royal dare I say costume dressing.

    3. You do know they went to visit a memorial to Nelson Mandela who was arrested and imprisoned for over two decades by those white colonialists who went on safari wearing those jackets?

She's wearing a sleeveless trench dress. That fits her. And is out on her, what 20th engagement since being married? I'd say she doesn't need snide comments about costume dressing.

      Delete
    4. Please Google "Safari inspired wardrobe". Snide is in the interpretation. Since when is it not okay to refer to Royals and costume dressing?

      Delete
    5. I usually don't comment on clothing or costume dressing. Find that a bit twee, actually, but had Meghan felt in the mood to do a bit of honoring in the costume department, methinks prison stripes or the colors of the African National Congress would be more appropriate -- not an outfit worn by the people who oppressed Mandela -- and I would like to think Meghan would be savvy enough to know the difference.

      Delete
    6. Wow I hadn't realized Meghan had already racked up 20 engagements. She got married less than 2 months ago and went on a 2 week long honeymoon. So maybe 6 weeks (???) of work = about 3 engagements a week. She has become quite the busy royal.

      Delete
    7. I did read that the Queen calls her outfits her "costumes," meaning that she would otherwise wear different things, like when she helicoptered in to KP for Louis' birth and Charlotte's birthday. I believe she feels like the pubic expects certain things when they see her.

    8. @bluhare
People are sometimes too eager to make every outfit a carefully thought out nod to something (they do it with Kate a lot- I just remember the "cornflower/prussian blue dress" when the cornflower in reality has no deeper meaning for the state and there were just some wrong informations on the internet about it) that they run into a problem with their imagination.
"Safari inspired" is a synonym for colonial elements or style from that time. I am sure no one would be so stupid to wear someting like that to this event.
      C.

      Delete
    9. I also think too much is read into the supposed hidden messages in the outfits royals wear and I can’t imagine Meghan would deliberately try to do a subtle safari-style message with her outfit at this event. Also agree that this really looks like a trench coat rather than safari wear. I also like this look.

  50. I don't love the dress but I don't hate it either. Meghan is high-waisted which sometimes makes a belted outfit look a bit 'off'. From the side she looks fantastic. A smaller collar, a tiny bit shorter hem line, and maybe different buttons might give the dress a better look. If the knot of the belt were to the side instead of right in front it would also look better. I do wish she would wear larger earrings. A sliver earring in a simple design, maybe a knot or a thick (but small) hoop would be a nice look.

I had a good’laugh Reading some advices saying a bit less of this and a bit more of that and not the same buttons and .. and ... making a totally different dress , that was really funny !
It is so refreshing to see all these timeless and though modern clothes, compared to the BRF fashion. I did like her shirt+large trousers at Wimbledon , she was looking like miss Chanel .... in the 30´s , yes last century ...and still elegant .... regarding her hair .... well let’s Try to find another word for messy bun , and it will become quite acceptable LOL

    3. Agreed. It is very clear that Meghan is going to do Meghan. The thing about clothes is it is such a personal choice and if you choose trends and opinions as your guiding principle you will run exhausted. Also most comments are biased in the commenters personal preference which they project on the subject and I find it unfair. That is why I can never use the phrases “a miss or hit for me” because it is not about me.

One thing I will say is that Meghan could wear a sack and look just fine. There is something about her presence that makes me focus on her rather than on what she is wearing. The clothes are just an accessory on the woman.

    7. Allison in US 20:14 you crack me up! I also like your earlier suggestion to rename the messy bun as relaxed chic. Wispy updo might work too.

In addition to enjoying Meghan's sartorial surprises, I like the fact that Harry is branching out into a greater variety of men's wear options during their joint appearances. I thought he looked splendid today in those light summer colours. I'm waiting for the day when I see him in a deep charcoal grey or dusky gray-green.

Like the Ascot dress, this Nonie trench photographs wonderfully from back and side-views. Like many of Meghan's choices to date, they're certainly not in keeping with a Duchess Rachel Zane look which I think some readers here would prefer. However, I've noted in photos that when Meghan stands alongside women in more form-fitting clothes, her looser elongated lines seem all the more elegant. What the precise length of the pants should have been notwithstanding, Wimbledon was no exception.

I spent some time on the trench designer's website and note that her inspiration for the 2018 collections comes from Indian men'swear and Japanese aesthetics. As we see from the comments here, that's not a look appreciated by all.

I also appreciate 19:04 Nora C's comments. I used to comment regularly on the Duchess Kate blog but haven't bothered for a long time because of the tiresome nit-picky vibe the comments section took on. Initially Mad About Meghan was relatively free of that. However, barely two months into her becoming a duchess it's becoming more that way.

I read both blogs--and will continue to do so--because I love Charlotte's in depth assessments and broad coverage of two modern women with influence whom I like to watch. That they wear beautiful clothes is a bonus. There once was a similar blog on Michelle Obama which the writer closed down. Mainstream media does not cover women's stories the way that they deserve to be or in the way that a passionate blogger can.

Kudos, high-fives and congratulations to Charlotte for giving us this platform and this forum. Well done, you! Oops! this got long....

    9. I love the Wispy Updo. "Today, the Duchess of Sussex wore Dior with her signature Wispy Updo." Would people complain that she was insulting the Queen by being wispy>

I do have a tendency to view Meghan and Kate sometimes like paper dolls---I see a yellow dress and wish for a woven belt with many sunshine summer colors. But if she wore that then some people would want a black belt. Some would prefer blue. Dangling earrings. And on and on.

Charlotte's posts contain the best background information! I so enjoyed Kate/William's Canada and Australia+ tours because I learned so uch and saw so much.

I think Kate was unsure of herself at first and became ore confident after she had a child. I think when Meghan can go by herself to visit places for which she will be a patron, she will loosen up and enjoy herself even more and always wear exactly what she wants to wear.

Whenever I feel iffy about an outfit, the side view always sells me. She is such a delight and I love when her hair is down and flowing.

That's all you can say about someone devoting her life to the service of others? Commenting on the size of her purse and finding fault with it? Today's purse is smaller. It should please everyone. Her shoes are normal - color, height, shape. That ought to please everyone too. Her dress is tasteful, elegant, event-appropriate, and looks grand on her. I love your posts, and will continue to follow Megan because I love her style and her good works. What I need to do is to stop reading the mean-spirited, picky comments about the size of her g-d purse. If you have nothing good to say, then don't leave a comment. I love Megan & Harry. They aren't being mean to Meghan as a person (unless of course it is a hateful comment). Or dissing her charity work. We all know those things are the most important aspect of being a modern day Duchess. But I have no problem with critiquing a look. That's why there are so many different brands and styles - because we all like different things! Saying you don't like the way someone styles their hair is not the same as saying you don't like the person as an individual.

Sarah UK I agree. I think she looks really smart! Also agree on the shoes - honestly I would have loved to have seen this ensemble with a charcoal grey slingback vs. the pump. I think that may have softened it a bit.

  67. Definitely not a fan of the outfit. Partly because it looks like it would feel like wearing a trench coat, which aren’t necessarily made of the lightest/softest fabric. In general I don’t understand coat dresses, especially in warmer weather!

  68. Really cool engagement, just wish it was a bit longer in duration. Both H&M looked very engaged & happy to be there. I absolutely love Meghan’s look! I find her choices interesting & she always looks fashionable & chic. The colour of this trench dress is lovely & very flattering for her skin tone. She has such amazing, smooth skin! Why not show it off with a sleeveless dress :) I especially love her accessories today; her delicate jewellery is stunning & that bag is something I need to own! Her hair looked soft & not too overdone & I really liked the shoes. An all round win in my book! & Harry gets kudos for not wearing blue :P

  70. I love the blush color of the dress, not sure about the style but surely she looks nice. The dress fits just fine imo, if you look at the shoulders and at the breasts you can clearly see it, if it was too big the shoulders would have been like a cap on her arms and at the breasts point you would not have been able to see her silhouette. Just my two cents from a self thaugt seamstress, but maybe I'm wrong ;)

  71. She’s definitely fighting a battle of preconceived expectations based on rather Caucasian women. Or for all the not comparing she’s being held to the same standard. That standard having a bias from the start...because her hair is different. My dad is jewish and my mom Irish and I have her hair, and my sister has his hair and it doesn’t compare. Mine will do anything, hers is a serious battle. Usually losing.

    1. Can't we just keep the discussion on the fact that hair can be different without starting a race debate? I for one do not even think people belong to a different race than the human or that people are representative of a race. Meghan has a kind of hair, other have other kind of hair like we all have different body types or shapes of head, and we try to make the most of what we have.

      Delete
    2. I think many caucasians, me included, can get very twitchy when the subject of race comes up.

What caucasians don't think is about race, because to us it isn't, we need to understand that for people of color, sometimes it *is* about race. And we should sit back, listen and learn.

    3. The funny thing is, as a black woman myself, the race is sure is almost always brought up by white people and rarely by blacks. When we do talk about racism it is really racism, and certainly has nothing to do with a woman choice of hairstyle. It is humorous t9 hear people say that she has to wear a messy but
N because black hair is hard to say,e. Personally, and again this is only my opinion, I think she wears her hair in a messy bun because she likes to wear her hair in a messy bun ... end of story!

      Delete
    4. Come on, can't people just comment on messy hair without it being racist or prejudice.. Many people don't even think about her race when forming an opinion of her styling and grooming - and that is not some lack of awareness of a subconscious racism hiding within, its just that they see a person, not a colour. That should be heralded as the greatest sign of progress. She has worn it sleek and slicked back with product and worn it loose and "messy" with a more free flowing style. (The same could be said of Harry, not that race comes into that conversation.) The same comparison could be made between my sister and I, both who are of the same race and both choose to style our hair differently. Whether or not it takes one of us longer with the straightening iron, and one longer with the curler, isn't about racial prejudice. Michelle Obama, for example, is in a public role and her hair is often styled in a very polished way, despite having hair that you may say is thicker/curlier/whatever. Perhaps she has a 'look' she wants to achieve or grooming style for a particular function. I personally feel confident its not about trying to become more 'white'.

If someone commented on a caucasian woman's hair being too 'severely' styled or straight or flat, they'd never be accused of being racist when its often just as hard for a 'white' person to create volume or texture in their hair.

Lets long for the day when it can be not about your cultural heritage and just about how you happened to style your hair or outfit or lipstick colour to express you tastes, fashion or mood.

    5. I completely agree Anon 15:11! I am white with long, thick blonde hair. I can easily do lots of things with it, but I often CHOOSE to put it in a "messy" bun because I actually like the way it looks!

    6. I’m sorry but this is much easier to say when you have not found yourself the victim of racism due to things you cannot change. It is the epitome of ignorance to claim that people do not belong to races. Those of us who are part of races rhat have faced and are still facing racism see this much differently. If Meghan’s hair specifically is going to continue to be discussed then I strongly suggest everyone do some reading on the historical connontations and current perceptions surrounding women of color and their hair. From college admissions to employment to dress codes to criminal justice to the military, women of color have experienced everything from being excluded to thought of as dirty to considered unprofessional to prohibited from wearing their hair naturally (sometimes at great financial and physical pain). It is more than just a choice you happen to not like when these comments are made. It always has been. No one ever comes right out says I’m about to say a racist or biased comment. To be honest I think I will have to leave blogs I follow on Meghan. The comments on this and others have gotten so disheartening. This woman has been nothing but positive and professional and is constantly held to a ridiculous double standard over her hair of all things. This has always been the case for WoC. It’s quite disheartening. And I do believe this will be my last comment on the matter.

  72. I love this engagement! Nelson Mandela's willingness to stand up to an oppressive system is beyond commendable! He is a hero for the ages.

I am glad that Meghan and Harry attended such an important exhibition. Satorically, Harry is the stand out! I love his grey separates! While I love trench dresses, this dress just does not compliment Meghan. I usually layer a trench dress with a blouse or shirt underneath to elevate the look, but in this case, I'm not sure if that would have improved the look. On a separate note, I'm glad her "messy, yet controlled bun" is back. This is Meghan's work look, and that is alright with me. She seems so relatable abd approachable this way for these engagements. But that purse is everything!

  73. It’s wonderful to see Harry and Meghan opening this important exhibition about Nelson Mandela on this special day! In my opinion, that is more important than what Meghan wore. I liked her entire outfit, head to toe, she looked lovely and happy. It’s nice that she supports a small Canadian company. The owner stated that she has seen increased traffic at their website.

After all of the excessive, over the top complaints about Meghan’s outfits causing too much money, when she has only been in the UK a few short months and is still establishing a wardrobe; there’s barely been any comments that both Meghan’s dress and bag, she purchased before moving to England. And she was photographed with her bag over a year ago.

    1. I don't get the fuss over Meghan's wardrobe cost. This is the busy social season in England. The Trooping, Ascot, engagements with the Queen all call for your top of the line dresses not something from Top Shop. Additionally this being her first tour she is also going to be in top of the line clothing. If her wardrobe costs more its because she is doing alot more engagements.

I also do not understand the fuss about wardrobe costs. It is a very busy season and I am sure she is not always going to pull something out of her closet to attend those. Many of the numbers they are quoting are also including jewelry and no one knows who bought those or if she bought them herself. Some are only looking to criticize about something...valid or not.

Omg I can't believe they managed to fit all the things that Charlotte mentions happened during their visit into an engagement that was 45 mins tops door to door. Almost kinda impressive lol.

I have to say I wish KP had let some actual media into the event, instead of just allowing photographers outside and then one photographer for very limited pool photos inside meaning KP themselves were the source
of almost entirely everything we got to hear about or see from the actual exhibit/event. I know coverage of Meghan and also Kate is always and will always be very focused on fashion over everything else, but still today's coverage felt even more limited than usual to just fashion with basically nothing about the actual event, and it felt weird but I couldn't figure out why till I realized there werent really actual reporters at the event and even photographers really only got access for the outside arrival. Again, ofc media will focus on style regardless, but i do think usually they at least have some random tidbits and such. And if KP is not even going to give them the option of having something other than fashion to write about without it requiring literally just quoting KP's tweets, then KP is part of the problem in regards to sexist coverage of women in public roles. I know they want to control coverage but like no one is going to write about the actual engagement if they didn't get to see it and their only source of info is the subjects themselves who obviously are not impartial.
Basically by limiting info to their own Twitter and anyone willing to write about their tweets, KP is trying to make the media serve as part of their press office as more spokespeople for them.

    1. Well I can see it from both sides. Yes it would have been nice to have a reporter chronicling this event as it was so meaningful. However I can certainly understand if after the nonstop Dailymail-caliber coverage as well as Meghan's dad's interview this week that both Harry and Meghan would want to do this event without the intrusion of the press.

I wanna echo those who have been saying that a lot of the criticism of her "messy" bun is definitely full of racial connotation even if it was 100‰ not intended that way. A lot of times white ppl honestly just don't even realize that an expectation they have is not something that ppl of other races can easily meet like they do, and so they think it's okay to criticize a certain thing bc in their minds they think it's easy to fix as per what they know to be the norm. But even if they dont intend to or know that they're basically saying "please try to be more like a white person", even if they don't mean it that way, that IS what they're saying. It's important to rmbr that not intending to say something racist or sexist etc actually has very little to do with whether or not what is said is prejudicial in some way bc not intending it a certain way doesn't change/lessen the effect and impact of what is said or done.

    1. As a black women I can honestly say that we do not want to be more like white women. If she relax out hair or lighten our skin it is because we like how it makes us look. If we wear our hair in a style that other people do not like please do not say that it is racist not to like my hairstyle. Racism is a powerful thing, please do not lessen its value by saying that comments about a w8man hair or clothes are racist just because the woman happens to be black.

What great engagement for Harry and Meghan. I absolutely love the fact that they are there attending this important exhibition. Despite this not being about fashion, I love Meghan's look today. I am so happy that Meghan is able to recycle something from her wardrobe, and can I just say that I think Meghan looks outstanding in this colour. The dress is really interesting and the shoes are to die for. Again, I think she needs some personalised tailoring, the size looks a little big, but it is a minor "issue" really. It occurred to me that maybe actresses choose their clothes for how these look when they move. Many of you ladies commented on her dresses in general looking better in a video clip, as they flow really beautifully, but they don't look so good in still photos. Maybe that is where the "issue" lies. Meghan has to get used to being photographed and seen much more in still pictures, and this may have to affect her clothing choices in the future. Just a thought. Thinking of Meghan and how she would feel internally about her Dad being so outspoken in the media, she is doing an amazing job. If that were my Dad behaving so badly, making up stories and cashing in on my choice of life partner, I would be devastated. I would probably hide inside KP, eat cake all day and refuse to go out.. No, Meghan is just carrying on gracefully, holding her head high and putting in her best work. She should be commended for that. I have so much respect for Meghan, she is a lovely and classy lady.

    1. It really is awful, the whole situation with her father. I feel that no matter what the Duchess of Sussex does, the end result will not be good. If she doesn’t talk to her dad, he will continue to talk to the press; if she does talk to him, he’ll probably tell the press all about it anyway. It’s not ideal. Yet, at least in public, she’s handling it as well as she can. I feel for her.

    2. I think he is bullying her with threats to talk to the press. Kensington Palace should fire back at him with some kind of statement that his actions are not in the best interest of his daugher's well-being, and he should stop, or legal action will be taken. Parthenia

    3. Every time Thomas Markle speaks, he puts his foot in his mouth. The more often he does it, the more he puts himself down and the more he elevates Meghan. The pubic is in sympathy with her and they are tired of listening to him. At first I thought he was a decent man, who'd made a few bad decisions and shown poor judgement. But the more he speaks the more I realize that he has major issues. The half brother and half sister are the acorns the didn't fall far from the Thomas Markle tree. Meghan and Harry have taken the high road, by saying nothing. If Thomas wants a relationship wth his daughter, he needs to SHUT UP!

    4. One can be appaled at what he says or what the press says he says, but there is not any legal action that could be taken. Because he and Meghan have had an ongoing relationship of some sort over the years and what appears to have been a close one when she was growing up, I tend to assume he has problems (mental or addiction) that have become worse as he has gotten older. The most respectful thing she can do for him might be to say nothing or explain anything.

As a South African woman who has been in an interracial relationship in the knowledge that 20 years before it would have been illegal, and considering the British royal family's history with racism, apartheid and colonialism in South Africa, I have to say that it has real significance to see the Duke & Duchess, as an interracial couple and simultaneously as members of the royal family, honour Madiba.

I am divided on this look. On one hand, I love that Meghan went sleeveless.I liked her hair, as I don't think of this as a "pomp and circumstance" event. Since Harry isn't wearing a tie, I think that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex agree with me. I enjoy a variety of hair styles myself, and would be quite sad if someone told me that I had to give up one that I love. I do wish that the part in her hair wouldn't be a center part, but that is a minor quibble. I appreciate that I can see her earrings from a distance. I'm not a fan of the trench-dress in still photos, and think the length seems a bit weird. But I don't have an issue with the dress as the model wears it, so I am wondering I would have the same issues if the shoes and purse had been a different color to contrast rather than blend in with the dress.

On a side note - I love seeing Harry in something other than a blue suit!

  85. Meghan and Harry are so personable and it's great that many of the activities they have chosen to participate in reflect their enthusiasm well. It's lovely to see.

I am in the camp of really disliking the messy bun. I personally just don't like the style. It is extraordinarily unpolished in my view and it is absolutely a choice of Meghan's. It's her style. I am Caucasian with limp, thin hair that is very difficult to style (and to keep it that way). Yet, an effort can be made if I want to make the effort. She can certainly wear it up but it does NOT have to be as messy as she wears it but that's her choice. I generally have liked her fashion choices but her constant use of the messy bun really detracts from her style, IMV.

  86. You said it perfectly Lauren. This is who Megan is and this is her style. This is who Harry loves and makes him a happy man - and she is an excellent ambassador or the BRF exactly because she isn’t a perfect fit for some mold that people have in their heads (and obviously her majesty doesn’t care about, no matter what her hair looks like). We’re not in the 18th century’s England. Those times are over. I don’t mean that disrespectfully. Leave some room for diversity, including sartorial preferences, please.

I love the coverage you gave to this day and the engagement , Charlotte. Sorry, to say this was not a good look for the Duchess. It hung off her body like a rain coat. She really needs tailoring. I have to get tailoring for the clothes I consider for important occasions, I don’t have the budget of a Duchess. She is too petite and beautuful to allow the lack of proper fitting clothes. It can distract from the occasion.
