Harry and Meghan joined Australians from a broad range of sectors including charity and community, business and industry, arts and culture, sport and entertainment.
It's been a day filled with gifts and congratulatory wishes following the wonderful news the Duke and Duchess are expecting their first child in Spring 2019. Indeed, they met a number of parents and excited children throughout their events in Sydney. Below, Meghan with singer Missy Higgins and her daughter Luna. Missy told the Duchess "Cherish each moment because it goes by so fast. It really does."
Hannah Furness reports: 'At a reception, the Duchess met Eddie Woo, a maths teacher and YouTube star, who told her about his three children, aged five, seven and 10, who require "a lot of energy". His wife Michelle said: “There’s no rest, but it’s so rewarding.” The Duchess laughed, before telling them: “We’re ready! We’re excited to join the club.”
During his first speech of the tour, Harry couldn't help but mention Baby Sussex. "We genuinely couldn't think of a better place to announce the upcoming baby, whether it's a boy or a girl," he said, looking over at Meghan. "It is great to be back in Australia. And especially even more so as this is my wife's first visit here, so I’m very excited to show her this incredible country of yours, perhaps not Kangaroo Flats military training area in Darwin though!". Harry said he is "particularly grateful to the Australian Government for hosting the Invictus Games, which the whole country has embraced with great enthusiasm" and added: "We’re both delighted to be here and really impressed to see you serving beer and tea at an afternoon reception, in true Aussie style."
The Duke and Duchess met Dr Richard Harris, an anaesthetist and experienced cave diver who was key to the to the Tham Luang cave rescue effort in Thailand earlier this year.
The Duchess wore an olive green shirt dress by American fashion designer Brandon Maxwell. Meghan's Fashion correctly notes Meghan's dress is the Pleated Button-Up Shirt Dress from the Spring/Summer 2019 Collection. The dress is designed with a collared neckline, belted waist and full pleated skirt. It's available for pre-order at Moda Operandi.
Readers will recall Meghan wore the hugely popular summery yellow dress by the designer for a Commonwealth Youth reception in July. Maxwell has been Lady GaGa's fashion director since 2012 and dresses everyone from Reese Witherspoon to Jennifer Aniston.
The Duchess accessorised with Diana's jewel encrusted gold butterfly earrings from earlier in the day.
The Palace told reporters they are from Diana's private collection. Prince Harry likely gifted them to his wife at some point over the last year.
It's lovely to see treasures from Diana's jewellery box emerge again.
And Diana's gold bracelet with blue stones.
Bethan Holt writes:
Meghan completed the look with beige leather pumps. Perth Fashion identified them as the Tamara Mellon Rebel 105 Capretto style.

'Another touching addition to the duchess’s day one look was a pair of earrings and bracelet from the private collection of Diana, Princess of Wales. The butterfly studs worn by Meghan were debuted by Diana during a 1986 tour to Canada while a gold and blue stone bracelet was another favourite of the princess.
These are not the first pieces from Diana’s jewellery box which Meghan has revived; for her evening wedding reception, she wore an Asprey aquamarine cocktail ring which the princess had debuted just a year before her death.'

Tomorrow, the couple will spend the day in Dubbo.
- The Duke and Duchess will fly to the town of Dubbo, situated on the Macquarie River, 300 kilometres northwest of Sydney. On arrival in Dubbo, The Duke and Duchess will visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service to learn more about the life-saving role the aviation service provides for people living in rural and regional areas.
- With most of the state of New South Wales suffering from drought, Their Royal Highnesses will see first-hand the hardships local farmers are facing by visiting a local property. The Duke and Duchess will then travel to Victoria Park to join people from Dubbo and surrounding areas at a picnic in the park to celebrate community spirit within the region. Members of the public are invited to attend, and His Royal Highness will give an address.
- In the afternoon, The Duke and Duchess will visit a local school working to improve the education outcomes of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Students will open up their classrooms to present their work and participate in a session of netball and touch football drills on the school oval, highlighting the importance of sport in education.
What did you think of Day One? :)
You slay me Charlotte. I think Harry is still talking and you've got a post up!
ReplyDeleteIsn’t Charlotte amazing?! She remains my go-to source!

She is absolutely radiant! Quite the understated detail on the dress. I like it. Harry gave a good speech, too.
ReplyDeleteI like this dress, it’s a good color for her.
ReplyDeleteHarry's speech was lovely. I think this dress is great for Meghan - totally looks like her. Is it bespoke? I saw that Red version but it slightly different.
ReplyDeleteI didn't comment earlier, I think it lovely that Meghan has been gifted some of Diana's jewelry and that she's wearing it on this trip. One would think that these earrings are similar to Kate being gifted the sapphire earrings. Now that there are wives for each of the sons, I hope that they'll start to gift more and more of Diana's jewelry. It must be sentimental for both Harry and Will - they must remember their mom wearing certain pieces. It's so sweet. Can't wait to see more.
Looking forward to learning where Meghan's trench coat is from. The coat along with the white dress was lovely.
Although the olive green looks great on her I love the red even more. I also feel she might look better in a different shade of green than olive, maybe emerald.
ReplyDeleteI think so, too! She does seem to suit brighter colours. I do like the red better than the olive green.
DeleteInteresting. I don't think the red would look right on her. I love the olive green.
DeleteI love the red version too! I think Meghan would look great in it, and I really hope she wears some bright colours on the tour. Having said that, I totally get this colour choice - she's wearing green and gold (the Aussie sporting colours). It's a nod to her host country and I think it's just perfect for this reception. Love the style of it too - a winner for me!
DeleteI love the red version of this dress! I would love to see Meghan in the red. The green is very much up her alley but it would be fun to see her in the red with the pop of color it would provide. I realize that she likes her neutrals and it may never happen but I think it would look lovely on her. She very much has that pregnancy glow everyone talks about. I was so sick I looked pallid and pale but she looks great.
ReplyDeleteI think the tour is at an optimal time during her pregnancy. Over the first trimester hump of exhaustion and possible morning sickness, yet not at the third trimester point where you feel large and ungainly. The joy on Harry's face earlier when they were gifted the koala and Uggs warmed my heart.
That picture of Harry with the baby Uggs is one of my all time favorite royal photos!
DeleteI was hoping for something more “evening” but this was a daytime event, so I had my hopes dashed a little.
ReplyDeleteMeghan looks nice in green, and I like the overall shape of the dress on her, from the limited pictures I’ve seen full-length. I’m just not loving the space suit cape. It’s like the Jetsons on safari. Overall she looks lovely though. Her makeup is great.
“Jetsons on safari”! 😂 That’s the exact image I got when I saw the back.
DeleteCharlotte, you’re doing so well keeping us all up to date. Thank you very much!
ReplyDeleteThank you all for reading :)
DeleteGood first day. They are a great team, and work so well together. Loved her white dress from earlier, very chic. I hope this tour doesn’t wear her out. She will have to pace herself.
ReplyDeleteLove 💕 love love the jewellery choices today. So sweet to wear these otherwise possibly forgotten pieces that belonged to Diana.
ReplyDeletehmm i love the duchess of sussex is wearing hmm she wow like the crowd in like a pro as far the first day its a good start
ReplyDeleteMorning from Miami. What a joy to wake and see this dress on Meghan, she looks so good and its tailored for her body. Boy is she glowing......
ReplyDeleteI think Day One was wonderful! They both looked so happy, despite the jet lag. Hope they can get a proper rest now. Thank you for a splendid coverage, Charlotte! (The added clock with Australian clock is extremely helpful and I love the header!)
ReplyDelete*with Australian time, lol!
DeleteI love this dress a lot more than the white one she wore yesterday. It's nice in both colours, but I think green is more suitable for Meghan. Great choice of jewels as well. Charlotte we have to thank you so much for your coverage!
ReplyDeleteLove that Meghan is dressing more like a Duchess & less like a Hollywood starlet. She looks great!
DeleteReally like this dress, lovely color! She is just as fond of shirtdresses as fond the Duchess of Cambridge is of coatdresses😉
ReplyDeleteWonderful can’t say enough good things about the tour so far- wow Meghan is beautiful especially when her hair is up!!! Love her fashion choices keep it coming!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE what Meghan wore on the first day of the tour. The dresses were beautiful and the fit was great. I love the cape on the green dress.
ReplyDeleteKudos to you, Charlotte. Your blogs are the best for all news of Meghan and Kate. I don't read anything else online, not even the Royal Family Youtube channel!
ReplyDeleteSo happy to see Harry relaxed, happy, and in love! And now his dream of fatherhood realized! I remember photos of the grieving and troubled prince, and it's wonderful to see him smiling again.
One thing I like about Kate and Meghan is-dare I say this? They are pretty, but not perfect. Those close-up photos show wrinkles and freckles and gray hair just like the rest of us. I don't feel like they are out of my league beautiful. In fact, I bet if I had designer clothes, and someone to do my hair and make-up, I could look just as lovely! With a commoner and an American for wives, W & H just seem more modern and approachable and not stuffy like previous generations. I like that, and I'm curious to see in what direction they take the Royal Family in the future.
Good for you Abby! I think both ladies are just so elegant, and thin, and with lots of hair, i could never look like that. But styling does a lot, i agree.
DeleteI enjoy this post and Charlotte, thank you for being so diligent and accurate with your reporting. I enjoyed the speech by the Duke of Sussex and I liked the comfortable relaxed fashion statement by the Duchess today; a very nice color for her.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Charlotte, for these fun, informative posts! What fun to have some happy news each day for the next 2 weeks. Hope you get some rest in between:)
ReplyDeleteI find myself wishing she wore the dress in its original red. It's such a gorgeous color that would have looked so beautiful on her. I imagine she made a deliberate decision to pick something more subdued, but I just love that red.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if my comments from yesterday posted but... I. Love. These. Outfits. I adore a god sheath dress and Meghan can absolutely rock them! And the shirtwaist dress! Also a fav of mine. I do like the green color on Meghan. I think if’s a great color on her and she looks lovely. I like that she is wearing Diana’s jewelry. I like the butterfly earrings, they add visual interest, but the bracelet! That seems very much like Meghan’s style and I bet we see that in her regular jewelry rotation for years to come.
ReplyDeleteThis dress is a good choice for her. Professional, polished, but still in keeping with her style. I really like Di's earrings but could pass on that bracelet. Would love to see her in some brighter colors on this trip at some point.
ReplyDeleteReally like this dress on Meghan, especially the longer length. Not sure I would wear it myself, but it's right up her alley. So nice that she kept her jewelry from earlier in the day as well.
ReplyDeleteI was not a fan of the trench with the white dress. With the sleeves rolled up, it looked too heavy for the warm weather. A light jacket or cardigan would have looked better I think.
I think the trench would have had an element of windproofing for the boat trip across the bay, not available from a small cardigan. Being full length it would also weatherproof from any stray surf assuming they weren't under cover. The other use it had was to give Meghan's outline more definition for photos in front of all the white stone of the opera house. At the same location Kate opted for a vibrant yellow which stood out clearly. Meghan's white shift on its own would have disappeared.
DeleteAgreed Heather, the Olive Green Dress is right up her alley. I like the trench and am waiting for it to be ID'd. My guess is that she that given the journey across the river on the boat. And they did arrive to rain. We'll see it again, I'm sure.
DeleteTrue, Elle and betsomo, about the trench being a good choice for the trip across the bay. Just don't like it with the sleeves rolled up.
DeleteLoved the dresses and jewelry today! I think Meghan looks great in olive green and her makeup was perfect. I’m looking forward to evening looks and seeing more fun jewelry!
ReplyDeleteI like the red version of the dress much better and think Meghan would kill in it, but that jungle green is very Australia. I love the pleats on the skirt.
ReplyDeleteThere were fewer outfit changes today than I thought there might be. It was clever of Meghan to add that trench for the zoo engagement, rather than changing into a new dress.
Great first day, but hoping Meghan can get some rest and be back to her more animated self soon. God knows she must need to conserve energy among all these engagements. They're such hard workers and it's inspiring and refreshing to see.
no new postings so I guess Charlotte and Team are getting much deserved rest:)
ReplyDeleteI have figured out that new photos of each day do not appear til around 10 PM in the States, depending on your time zone.
Deleteoh, harry looks so nervous giving the speech. i imagine he's feeling a bit jittery with his pregnant wife on their first big tour- i can't blame him. in fact, i find it endearing. and as i've watched more and more of them together, it does sort of seem like Meghan is soothing him, sometimes. they are a great pair and i adore them. but...
ReplyDeletenot my favorite dress today, but i love the earnings and ESPECIALLY the bracelet. i agree with others that it does look to be her style and i think we'll see much more of it to come.

Oh my goodness, this woman is photogenic - the first thing I notice about her in any photo is that beautiful, warm, smiling face. However, I do like the olive green version of this dress rather than the red. This is turning out to be a wonderful tour already, and it’s only the first day!
ReplyDeleteI like the green color of the dress as well, and Diana's butterfly earrings are simply precious. It's been quite a flurry of news the past few days and I admire you Charlotte. How do you keep us posted with all the information and yet manage to get a decent rest in between? You're a trooper and I Thank You so much for all the hard work you put in for us,the readers :-)

Oh I Am Simply Bursting With Happiness For The D&D of Sussex!! I'm away for work, attending a Film Festival & then fly out again for more film work. So thus I had resigned myself to not being able to follow The Tour Live (Haven't caught anything about Eugenie's Wedding but a brief pic of her Amazing Gown!!) but was looking forward to tucking into it all in November & indulging in a good long proper catch up! Then I heard the news & now I can't resist taking a peek in during breaks, even tho I can only scroll pics (no reading) & maybe leave a message like this. Do have fun following it live & Thank you Charlotte for all of the amazing work that you are doing & will continue to do throughout this tour! I'll enjoy what pics I can catch & then will have it all (including the responses) awaiting me when I'm back in November!! Cheers Again for Harry & Meghan!! Harry just looks so ready to be a Father & Meghan is absolutely Glowing!! :) xx
ReplyDeleteYou have your November all taken up with these wonderful posts! Hope you get some rest soon.
DeleteI love everything Meghan wore on this first tour day! The white dress looked easy and comfortable, and the olive green is a fantastic color on her. She has the right coloring to make a rich olive really sing. And the jewelry was a really thoughtful and sweet addition! I know both Harry and William both must be so proud to be able to share their mother's private jewelry with their wives, and both Meghan and Kate have an exquisite sense of the most appropriate times and places to wear them.
ReplyDeleteMeghan truly is glowing, as so many people have commented on! It must be great fun to get baby gifts on the tour, too -- although I suspect there's a lot of last-minute shopping taking place! The picture of Harry holding the wee baby Uggs just melted me! He is so excited to begin a family of his own, finally, and I know it's something he's been wanting for a long time now. I am absolutely thrilled for both of the Sussexes to be joining the parenting club! My own children have been the light of my life, and I am quite sure Harry and Meghan will feel the same way.
Last but definitely not least, thank you SO much, Charlotte, for your fast but accurate, careful, and kind coverage of the tour! You really bring the experience of the folks Down Under to life for those of us on the other side of the world. I am so happy I found this blog!
To me the dress is really unflattering in shape and color, non a great choice. The earrings are just lovely.
ReplyDeleteWow, the 2 of them look so positively happy!! I applaud her for forging ahead with travel plans. Absolutely adore the cream dress/day look. Lukewarm on the olive dress. At this point I suspect the comfort factor weighs heavily on choices. Many of us have been there.
ReplyDeleteIt was lovely to see her in Diana's jewelry. Both Kate and Meghan have similarities to Diana - warmth, grace, compassion, beauty. Her boys have chosen very well indeed.
I just found this blog and have to compliment Charlotte on the amount of incredible work you do with the pictures, videos, etc. I love H&M and am so excited for the baby. I'll be coming here daily to check. Thanks again Charlotte
ReplyDeleteI love both dresses, she is glowing and so healthy. Charlotte, do you know how much influence has Jessica M on Meghan’s outfits? She is with her in Australia or at least she is there as her friend/ advisor. Jessica has such a different style to Meghan, I do wonder if she really is, styling her? I can imagine that Meghan would need lots of help with this tour regarding her clothes. There would have been so much planning and preparation into choosing outfits and then being organized for each event on the actual tour. Would her assistant Amy be involved in her clothes? Sinead
ReplyDeleteHello Sinead,
DeleteI think she has a fairly significant role when it comes to Meghan's wardrobe. Certainly in terms of sourcing pieces from Canadian retailers in particular. I don't think Amy is involved in the clothes side, much more in a deputy private secretary capacity. She was by Meghan's side during the walkabout yesterday and seems like a lovely lady.
this dress is beautiful even if I would have preferred short folds. In red Meghan would be stunning but not for this kind of ceremony. Harry too cute during this speech.
ReplyDeleteI love Meghan's style - she's had a few misses for me but generally, I'm a fan. I think she was understated enough today to not draw too much attention to herself but enough that you noticed her which is a fine line to walk and she does it beautifully. I LOVE that she is wearing jewelry from Diana's personal collection - it's such a special way to incorporate her into their lives.
ReplyDeleteHer make up looks AMAZING!! I really like this outfit too. Not a color I am used to seeing her wear and it looks great with the pumps and jewelry she chose! LOVE the nod to Diana.
ReplyDeleteLOVE it - she look incredible in olive! Not usually a fan of midi lengths, but Meghan manages to pull it off. She KNOWS proportion - which is vital, and most of the other royals - and their celebrity guests - do not. This dress is easy elegance itself. A classic, updated - and her accessories as usual are the coolest. No over-the-top bling or boho looks, just fresh, understated and chic with a subtle edge. Plus, her make up and hair and beautiful attitude just add to the perfection.
ReplyDeleteShe looks glowing and gorgeous this colour is great on her thanks charlotte
