The Sussexes Speak of Building "Communities Of Compassion" for Time 100 Special

In a special appearance for the unveiling of Time's annual list of 100 most influential and inspiring people of the year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared an uplifting message of congratulations to the winners in additions to an important message for viewers on ABC. The participation of the couple tonight follows their inclusion on 2018's Time 100 list "in recognition of their global growing influence". As alumni of the prestigious list, the Sussexes shared a video filmed in their garden in Montecito (you'll notice Pula walking by).

Meghan touched on the importance of good communities and how "seeing our world through the lens of community is so important because we need to redraw the lines of how we engage with each other - both online and off. Good neighbours look out for each other, protect each other and keep each other safe. Good neighbours also ensure that we are informed with facts and not fiction about our communities and the issues that affect us". Harry spoke about the power and influence of the online world and the damage platforms can do: "When one person buys into negativity online, the effects are felt exponentially. It’s time to not only reflect, but act." Harry added: "Some of the world’s greatest issues are being inflamed by the online space, you realize you need to do something. Tonight reminds us of how important it is to watch out for each other, to care for each other, and to inspire each other."

The Duchess shared her hopes we'll all build "communities of compassion". The video featured a memorable photo from Meghan's visit to a school in Dagenham in March. On the day, the Duchess stood on stage to address seven hundred students and there was a very memorable moment when she made a specific request: "Before I continue I’m going to go off the cuff here, because I do think what’s really key is there is one brave young man in this room who wants to come and say what he thinks the importance of International Women’s Day is." 16-year-old Aker Okoye was among a number of boys who raised their hands before Meghan chose him. Needless to say he was very pleased. He greeted the Duchess, followed by cheers from his classmates. His first words before explaining his thoughts on the importance of equality? "She's really beautiful innit."

Coinciding with National Voter Day the couple spoke on the upcoming election. "We are six weeks out from election day, and today is National Voter Registration Day. Every four years, we’re told, ‘This is the most important election of our lifetime.' But this one is." Referencing the impact of those on the list, Meghan added: "Let’s honour those who gave us courage this year. Like the scientists, researchers, and medical professionals who are leading the fight against COVID-19. Or the countless voices who are speaking out with passion and purpose against injustice and inequality, and to those silently marching in solidarity, in peaceful protest, to stand for what is just and what is right." It comes as Gloria Steinem revealed her friendship with Meghan began when the Duchess visited her and they "cold called" voters. Ms Steinem described the Duchess as "smart and authentic".

"When we vote our values are put into action, and our voices are heard." - The Duchess of Sussex.

Prince Harry added "this election" he will not be able to vote in the US and said: "Many of you may not know I haven't been able to vote in the UK my entire life. As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation, and online negativity. What we consume, what we are exposed to, and what we engage with online, has a real effect on all of us. Tonight reminds us of how important it is to watch out for each other; to care. We are incredibly proud to join you in this historic moment in time."

This year's Time 100 list includes an array of "pioneers, artists, leaders, icons and titans who have had the most impact this year".

Black Lives Matters Founders Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi were included on the list.

Sybrina Fulton wrote:

'I first heard about the Black Lives Matter movement the year my son Trayvon was killed. It wasn’t on a national level yet. It was just something that people were saying in our circles. To know that Patrisse Cullors and Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi were out there organizing this movement—I felt supported and encouraged.

There are only three of them, but they are everywhere. They are getting people to think: What if you had a 17-year-old son in a hoodie, and no weapon, just a candy and a drink, and now he’s dead on the ground? What if your daughter was sleeping in her own bed and the police knocked down the door and killed her? How would you feel? That is what “Black Lives Matter” asks.

The moment that I was going through my own tragedy, the same things were happening with Eric Garner, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, Jordan Davis, Dontre Hamilton and Oscar Grant. I’m in a circle with all of their families, and we continue to lift one another up. And it continues to happen—to George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and more.

But this year feels different. Since the video came out of the brutal killing of George Floyd, people are actually witnessing what African Americans have been going through most of our lives. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. Once you feel the pain in your chest, you can’t unfeel that pain. I’m glad to see there are more young people getting involved, more nationalities, more races—the protests are now a rainbow of people from all walks of life, in different countries, joining and saying, “Black lives do matter.”

This is about human lives. We want people to support us, stand with us, write a letter, speak to your local officials, join a rally. Do something. Make sure people are hearing your voice saying, “Black lives matter.” We can’t give up. Patrisse, Alicia and Opal won’t.'

The Duchess selected a casual look featuring separates and familiar shoes and accessories. The eagle-eyed What Meghan Wore suggests Meghan wore a silk shirt by Victoria Beckham. The piece is described: "Notice the sharply pointed collar and rich mahogany-brown hue that makes you just want to complete the look with flares and platforms. That's so 70s, indeed. Featuring a pointed collar and a concealed front button placket."

Meghan accessorised with her Cartier Love Bracelet.

As Time honours those who have used their influence for positive change this year, we lost a legend who spent her life fighting for exactly that. In a tribute to the inimitable Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Duchess shared the following statement "With an incomparable and indelible legacy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg will forever be known as a woman of brilliance, a Justice of courage, and a human of deep conviction. She has been a true inspiration to me since I was a girl. Honour her, remember her, act for her."

  8. Bravo!! Once again Harry and Meghan are leaders of inspiration, compassion and kindness. For so many who feel that their voices are never heard, I loved that H&M reminded us that by voting our voices are heard and that they matter. I sincerely hope that this inspires those who don't feel the need to vote, to get out there and make their voices heard not only for themselves but for their neighbors, their families and their communities.

  12. Meghan has definitely come alive again since the move. Harry doesn't seem quite like his old self yet, but I do think he's happier away from the confines of the palace. I'm sure the continued negative comments against them are difficult for him, but I hope he'll eventually be able to ignore that and fully settle into his niche. They've already done so much since being in the States!

I'm sure people will disagree with Harry speaking up at all about the US election, but it makes sense to me: he and Meghan are a partnership, in pretty much everything. I thought it was interesting that he noted he wouldn't be able to vote in *this* election, which says to me that he's seeking dual citizenship. I wonder if Meghan is still in the process for dual citizenship in the UK? I would imagine so, but who knows!

  13. In these sad days of so much political hate speech, it was inspiring to hear Harry & Meghan speak so eloquently of how we should be treating each other...on or off line. It warms my heart to see them trying to make a difference during these difficult times.

  14. Harry and Meghan always speak the truth coupled with the joy they exude in their relaxed manner. Always given me hope.

  15. Why would Harry not be able to vote in the UK?

    1. Technically Harry can vote...it is not forbidden nor illegal. But the Royal Family choose to remain neutral and not vote. It is because the elected government becomes Her Majesty's Government. It would be very dicey for the Royal Family to support or vote for a candidate. If someone else is elected, there would be tension as the Government and the Monarchy have to work together. The Queen has weekly meetings with the UK's Prime Minister.

    2. Members of the royal family don’t. They are expected to stay out of politics.

    3. The British Royal Family are to be apolitical and therefor do not vote. The Queen is head of state which is not a political position and has nothing to do with government. Not to say that members of the royal family do not have political views they most certainly would do as it is natural but they cannot express them.

    4. From what I understand, the Royal Family doesn't vote.

  16. I absolutely love the introduction the two of them did, completely lovely! They look healthy, happy and well. It's also wonderful to see this coming after they made that prestigious list in 2018. The world recognizes their importance, and ability to bring about necessary, compassionate change. They are on the right path for them. It's too bad they got here through such a painful process, but I applaud them coming out the other side stronger, and still focusing on the things that really matter.

  19. The United States is torn in half these days. It’s good to hear Harry and Meghan speak for civility and citizen participation. Our vote is our voice. I would be shocked if Harry applies for US citizenship, certainly not in his grandmother’s lifetime. (can’t vote in ‘this election’ ).
Thanks for this, Charlotte. I am hopeful we will live through this with our nation intact.

I agree with what Meghan said about the importance of this election year. In fact, since the death of Justice RBG, there is so much more at stake. With all due respect to PH, his young family, and his own passion to make a difference, it makes sense to consider there is a “reason for every season”. PD in her own time was very popular in USA, and he may be an extension of her, but Meghan should be cautious to protect him away from a polarizing American election year. I am sure he is a well welcomed addition to the US, but this election year is very divisive practically in its effect for many peoples’ lives and future. I hope Meghan is not just only thinking in terms of her “voice”, ambition, drive, objective and the very environment and country she is consciously or other wise operating in. There is a fine line about involving Harry at least until the election is over. It can be a bitter and emotional issues driven election year. It is better to have a good start for him in a new environment. IMHO

    1. Harry will be fine. We're not obsessed with destroying him in the US like the UK was with destroying Meghan. I was thinking recently, what if the US had the same type of tab culture. Everything and everyone in Harry's past and all the BRFs indiscretions and scandals would be the topic of discussion for decades. Lucky for Harry he doesn't have to worry about that and shame on everyone who put Meghan through that in the UK.

    2. It is not about Harry will be fine. I am sure he will fine one way or another. There are laws which affect people's lives and the selection of a justice either by a president of one party or another will make a difference. First the election and votes... Some of the laws are blood boiling issues Americans are passionate about and debated for some decades. People have their own focus, and much is in the air at crossroads. It is a matter of six weeks at least until the election is over. Why let people read too much in what he says? what has he got to lose if he stays off issues on American election until after it is over?

I assume if they are going to be producers on Netflix, their content will be in consideration to meet reasonably a majority of people’s interest. Even if not the majority, to be in the line of informative documentary, family (women animated) shows, scripts? They seem to have signed up to a line of work which will give them an outlet to express various subjects. He protected Meghan and they moved here.
May be America may not be as brutal with its tabloid culture as UK’s had been., but a decisive and polarized American election is a different matter, and impression and memory matters.

  23. Thank you Charlotte for the interesting post. I am conflicted by this. I think it is a bit arrogant for a British prince to give free thinking Americans unsolicited advice regarding their Presidential election and also should that have been part of a special speech to celebrate the Time 100. Hopefully Harry is applying for American citizenship so that he can renounce his titles and rights to the throne and move on with his life as an American rather than the no man's land he is in at present. I liked the initial Harry and Meghan billing for their video and did not like the change.

    1. Harry didn't say anything about the presidential election and just because he isn't a citizen yet doesn't mean he can't have legitimate concerns about the country. His wife and child are Americans. He's living in America so he's right to be concerned.
As an American, I think they were both pitch perfect.

  26. I have lived in the U.S. on a green card for 22 years. The reason? The U.S. naturalization oath which says "I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God." I live her in deference to my spouse and children. I keep quiet about things American and yes, I feel sometimes I live in a half life. But my heart is with the country that birthed and sheltered me, which welcomed my grandparents, where I gained my education, etc. No one but Harry and Meghan know what Harry meant and what his plans are. But as a citizen of a Commonwealth country, if Harry were to swear this oath then absolutely he would have to give up his title, his role in the Commonwealth because he would basically be saying that he no longer owed allegiance to his grandmother and his father. He can remain British if he comes American of course because the U.S. doesn't care but he cannot remain a British prince who owes loyalty to his British sovereign.

    1. The US is NOT a commonwealth country so it’s a good thing you aren’t trying to become a US citizen. You wouldn’t pass the citizenship test. Tabloids and their readers have been condemning Harry for these citizenship rumors and demanding he be stripped of titles. People are so riled up over rumors.

  27. I was a bit surprised that Harry mentioned voting. I took his mention of "this election" as referring to the U.S. election, and since he is not a citizen he can't vote in it (and by the way, I've never been able to vote anyway.) I took the message to mean that if one the right to vote, one should exercise it, coming from someone who has never been able to cast a vote. Harry's focus was really on hate speech, and asking people to moderate such. Meghan stressed the importance of voting as she is the American. As to Harry eventually applying for American citizenship, I just can't see it as long as either his grandmother or father is the sovereign. He's in the same position Meghan was in in the U.K. She wasn't a citizen, but married to one. It would be perfect if the whole family had dual citizenship, but I don't see how Meghan will ever be able to qualify in the near future, as she would not be able to meet the residency requirement. And by the way, in order to conclude that Meghan is encouraging people to vote for Biden, you have to associate the hate speech with Trump.

    1. Anonymous 16:52, yes we were told that Meghan had started the process of becoming a UK citizen, but obviously she has changed her mind. The two basic ways you can become a citizen are by becoming a naturalized citizen after living in the UK for 5 years, or by marrying a British citizen and then living in the country for 3 years. Meghan did not live in the UK for three years and now that a home has been purchased in the USA, it is highly unlikely that she would return and stay in the UK for three years.

  29. It was the Daily Mail reporter, Nickki Schwab, who told Trump (untruthfully) that, “Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chimed in on the US election and essentially encouraged people to vote for Joe abides. I wanted to get your reaction to that.”

This was a classic DM set up. Mislead and misdirect. The DM reporter set up Trump because he’s so easy to rule up and gets a negative quote to headline.

Some readers here followed up on this DM narrative by trying to make what Harry said a political thing and getting all self righteous about stripping Harry of his titles and so forth. This is right up DM tactic.

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
