Archewell Audio Holiday Special: "Love Always Wins"

The much-anticipated Archewell Audio Holiday Special launched on Spotify today. It marks the beginning of a multi-year partnership with the streaming giant ahead of a full series planned for 2021. I was very excited when I heard about this working relationship as the podcast medium lends itself wonderfully to simply listening to stories. There's nothing better, especially in the current climate, than putting on a pair of earphones and going for a long walk listening to your favourite podcast. Archewell Audio offers inspiring stories and a platform for the issues Harry and Meghan care most about. The couple are credited not only as hosts but executive producers. As expected the holiday special delves into stories from those the Sussexes have worked closely with and those who played pivotal roles in 2021. Guests included Stacey Abrams, Christina Adane, José Andrés, Brené Brown, Rachel Cargle, Deepak Chopra, James Corden, Matt Haig, Sir Elton John, Hussain Manawer, Naomi Osaka, Tyler Perry and George the Poet.

More from Harpers Bazaar:

'"As we come to the end of this year, and look to the future … let's hold onto the lessons we've learned about how important it is to take care of one another and how meaningful our connections are, even when they're physically impossible," Harry says on the holiday special.

"We thought, What if we can bring together some people that inspire us—people that we admire—and get their thoughts on what they learned from 2020," Meghan adds.

"As we all know, it's been a year," Harry says. "And we really want to honor the compassion and kindness that has helped so many people get through it." Meghan continues, "At the same time, to honor those who have experienced uncertainty and unthinkable loss, our thoughts have been with you, especially during this holiday season. … We also want to thank health care workers, frontline service workers, and so many others for their sacrifices."'

A key focus of 2020 has been forging relationships and meeting leading figures in areas they want to support and impact. Democracy advocate Stacey Abrams was one of the key names Meghan reached out to privately earlier this year to discuss challenges surrounding voter suppression. Stacey spoke about the importance of giving oneself permission in 2020.

"I gave myself permission to watch all the television I wanted. To read when I should have been working and to make mistakes. But most of all I gave myself permission to be sad, so I could find joy on the other side."

Tyler Perry was a major source of support for the couple this year. They stayed at his property when they first moved to the US. Speaking about the pandemic he said he "handled it one day at a time with a lot of prayer", adding his lowest moment came "right before Thanksgiving".  Perry revealed at the studio they were feeding 5,000 families. The realisation it wasn't enough and the need was far greater left an indelible mark on him.

José Andrés introduced himself as "a cook", before Harry jumped in, saying, "José is being incredibly humble. He is a cook. He also owns amazing restaurants but on top of that he really empowers communities through food. He's the founder of the non-profit World Central Kitchen which provides meals after natural disasters all over the world." Of course, Archewell's first major project will see the Duke and Duchess working alongside WCK - building a series of permanent structures which will serve as kitchens during and after crises with the first to be unveiled in the coming months. José recalled his lowest moment as "when I was at my restaurant in March closing", describing it as being "as hard as any moment I've experienced in my life".

Bite Back 2030 campaigns for a healthier generation. They are building a movement of young people who will play important roles in the future. Co-chair Christina spoke about their efforts in a year like no other. "I want serious measures taken to address the climate emergency globally. I want young people's voices to be at the centre of building back better. I want to see progressive steps towards true racial justice. I want more empathy and love from everyone. I want truth and transparency from everyone in power."

On how he will tell others about 2020 in the future, Matt Haig said, "The world woke up, we realised how connected we all are to each other, to the natural world, to other species. We saw how human beings can rise to any challenge. We've been given a chance to change, and you know, if we did..." Readers will remember Meghan included a poignant piece by Matt 'A Note from the Beach' when she guest edited British Vogue.

2020 has been a year of reflection for so many of us. A time to turn to our fondest memories and times of great joy. I think that's been very much the case for Harry and Meghan, too. The podcast was filled with reminders of their beautiful Windsor wedding. Elton John, who performed at the reception, spoke about his journey as a recovering alcoholic with meetings taking place from home. The iconic performer credited Zoom with allowing him to connect. "It's been a lifesaver."

The immensely talented George the Poet opened the BBC's coverage of Harry and Meghan's wedding with a poem celebrating the "indescribable beauty of union, in two beings forming one new being". Reflecting on 2020, he told the Duke and Duchess, "I just took more pride in the little things. I had a deeper appreciation for going for a walk, for seeing my loved ones." He revealed the painful moment when a pregnant loved one was hospitalised with Covid-19.

In a reference to their own journey, Harry and Meghan chose 'This Little Light of Mine'. Meghan said, "It played at the very end of our wedding, while we were walking down the steps of the church. It was the music that we wanted playing when we started our lives together. Because as we all know, Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that." The Martin Luther King, Jr quote is a favourite of the Duchess - as referenced by Harry during a passionate WE Day speech in March 2019 before Archie was born. "As my wife often reminds me with one of her favourite quotes by Martin Luther King, Jr - “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

Harry added, "The message of this song is one we hold so dearly. It's about using the power we each have within us to make this world a better place."

To perfectly sum up their journey since their wedding day, Meghan added, "No matter what life throws at you guys, trust us when we say, love wins." A sentiment echoed by Harry. "Love always wins."

The episode came to a close with an incredible special new year's wish from...Archie! (If you've already listened to the podcast, you'll know it's a very sweet moment). Harry tells his son he can speak into the microphone. "You can speak into it." Meghan asks Archie, "Is it fun?" To which he responds, "Fun." Archie then joins his parents in wishing listeners a Happy New Year.

In a tumultuous year filled with life-changing decisions, joys and heartbreaks, hearing the laughter in the last moments of the podcast proves it was all worth it. They are happy, content and focused on their future. The first special was a timely and uplifting listen, beautifully curated by the couple -- a hint of the very exciting things to come in 2021. When we look forward to the new year, and a better year, I think Stacey Abrams summed it up aptly. "All we can do is work for what we thought was right." I look forward to covering all of them here on MAM. Thank you for reading in 2020. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year!

I listened to the podcast while meal prepping today and it (not the onions haha) actually brought me to tears a couple of times. After hearing the debut episode, I’m really looking forward to the content Harry and Meghan will be putting out via Archewell Audio.

Also, omg, Archie’s little accent! And Harry’s laugh! It was so good to hear them so happy.

  3. It was all so wonderful from beginning to end(Archie!), but my main takeaway is there is no doubt that Harry has managed to achieve what Diana wanted most for him and for herself...to make one's way to a full and fulfilling life with abundant love, challenges and the freedom to be ones best self. Meghan, of course, marches on. Can't wait for 2021!

    2. So well expressed, BeanieG!

I enjoyed listening very much. The podcast was both uplifting and inspired reflection. I loved the musical bits. I had to listen to Archie's little voice three times! Love how he managed to emphasize the word "new." Whether by accident or design, it had a most uplifting effect and just made me smile! As we all look forward to saying good-bye to 2020 and welcoming 2021 with hope and optimism, all the best to everyone, and a happy new year! Thank you Charlotte for your stellar work!

  5. What a pleasant surprise. Most regular readers know, I am always more on the critical side, but I am really excited here. Especially about Rachel Cargle. I don’t agree with everything she says but she is a powerful voice and I have learned a great deal through her.

    1. And after listening I have to say I think the critique in The Times is spot on. I am left disappointed with
the format and the selection of stories (not necessarily the guest list).
Happy New Year to you Charlotte and to everyone!

  13. To begin I must say thank you to Charlotte for yet another year of exceptional reporting in keeping us informed in a positive manner on our favorite royal couple. I hope all will take the time to sit with a cup of tea/coffee or put their ear pods in and jog/walk with this first Archewell Audio production. H&M have established a first rate production team only to be equaled by their guests. I wait with anticipation as to what will follow. All the guests were so genuine in speaking their truth and to end with the thoughts through the poetry of Hussain Manawer was unexpected perfection. As for Archie, thank you H&M for letting us in and sharing the delightful and unexpected surprise! Happy, healthy and blessed New Year to all.

  15. Finally I had the chance to listen to their first podcast. I can't say I'm a regular podcast listener, but I must admit I really loved this one, it was a nice start for a hopefully long journey.
Charlotte, let me follow suit with others and thank for all your efforts you do in your three blogs. After all these years they are still an immense joy to me, a great way of information and learning.

I am still to listen to the podcast but I've heard the bit at the end with Archie.
It was so precious and to me showed that this small family unit is in a really good place. What more can we ask for.....after all they have been through.
Wishing you Charlotte and your family all the very best for 2021 and the very same to Harry, Meghan and Archie.

    1. Hello,

Due to the nature of Meghan's work and the difficulty in identifying pieces from a couple of recent virtual appearances, it hasn't been possible to include a great deal on the fashion front. However, that will most certainly change in the new year and I'll be writing posts on the topic separately. Both here and DKB, I've always covered the work primarily and then the fashion. I know we're all looking forward to a time when we'll see evening ensembles and official events again :)

  18. Very happy to see the plans of the Sussex couple come to fruition so well. Listen to Archie and listen to him again! It's so so cute, so funny, I shed a tear every time I heard it. The joy of living of the 3 that we feel and listen to is so contagious! Archie is not jealous because I saw the 2 accents of his parents in his "speech"👌👌👌

  19. I cried through my delight as I heard Archie. Because they are so happy. I am so happy for them, because we all deserve to be that free. Those giggles will forever be a 2020 highlight.

  21. I have been reading this blog over a year now and it has been one of the greatest highlights of follwing Harry and Meghan's journey. Thank you so much Charlotte for your incredible articles filled with dedication, kidness and positivity, it's very much needed with the level of hate this wonderful couple receive daily. I also wanted to thank you for creating a safe and joyful place where people can share their love and support to the Sussexes.

I really hope you do a another 'Year in Review' of 2020 for Meghan, she certainly has had yet again another tremendous year. So looking forward to that! Wishing you and everybody a Happy New Year :)

  22. Dr. Deepak Chopra’s remark on “Love in action” in this pod cast expresses most of the people who shared their thoughts and reflected what the year meant.

They acted in their care, concern, and love for humanity. Also, his comment on love without action, and action without love is a reminder many faith groups share, the short fall of faith without service, and service without faith. Whenever I get determined to have a balanced love style, or go on serious and healthy diet, I used to read my ‘second bible” which I still have to this day. It is Deepak Chopra’s book titled, “Ageless Body, Timeless Mind”.

Harry and Meghan did an excellent job connecting these special people, archiving their thoughts/actions in memory of the infamous Year 2020. Tyler Perry’s comment on the forbidden smile due to masks is well observed, and a reminder that the pandemic came packaged with many restrictions (no hugs, no hospital visits, no presence at funerals, business closings e.t.c). It was indeed a punishing year which denied much human closeness unlike the human nature. The Chef is a God sent – Bless his heart and his work. The Sussex's made a wise choice in making his work part of their first philanthropic focus. Hunger can be a solvable disease when there is a heart. The Chef’s and their hearts are at the right place.

Sweet Archie – you are huggable, lovable, cheerfully merry, and a lively child. What an excellent idea it was to include his voice in a program which shares his name.
The last four months, I had been nagging myself to live “a mindful life”, to think through what I do.

Here, the thought of “Love in action” is stack in my mind since I listened to this podcast. I had always been aware that I am a loving person (at least so I think). Upon reflection on Chopra’s remark, I realized, I am short of action. One of my top 2021 resolution will be, to “love in action”. Balance in life is so important. I can think of the people I love, or just be caring for humanity. I concluded I don’t take action as much as I love. Now, Nike’s commercial is crossing my mind: “just do it”. One step at a time –I will explore volunteering with minimal hours, and take it from there.

Charlotte – as always, the most dependable and well researched blog which continues steadily. It is a daily comfort for many, and no matter how much good purpose and interest you find in what you do, TIME! Time and time. The time, skill and care you put in this is highly appreciated. You are an example of love in action. Thank You

Correction: should be read a balanced LIFE style, not a balanced "love style"

I used to read that book now and then in my twenties. It had been a long time since I had read it. I will take it out this January and see what my new age thinks of it.

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
