Meghan Supports Hubb's Project to Help Londoner & Backs Evening Standard's Food for London Now Campaign

Whilst it will be several months before we hear details on Harry and Meghan's plans for their new charitable entity Archewell, I knew without question we would see them supporting causes closest to their hearts both in LA and the UK during the COVID-19 crisis. During a Zoom call on Tuesday, the Duchess reconnected with the women of the Hubb Community Kitchen to discuss plans to support the community during this uncertain time and to officially back the Evening Standard's "moving" Food For London Now campaign.

The work Meghan did with the Hubb following the Grenfell tragedy involving community, togetherness through cooking, and women supporting women is at the very heart of her efforts. Meghan told the group: "What was so great is you look back at that first day we met and then however many visits later and going, ‘yeah, we’re just going to make a cookbook’, and not knowing what a huge success it was going to be. And that’s a testament to you where I felt, again, it’s inspired so many people." The Duchess also added: "The spirit of the Hubb Community Kitchen has always been one of caring, giving back and helping those in need, initially in Grenfell and now throughout the UK. A home-cooked meal from one neighbour to another, when they need it most, is what community is all about."

Following a request from Meghan, the group of over seventeen women plan to prepare up to 300 nutritious meals per day from their own homes starting Monday. Much of the produce will be supplied by the Felix Project, the Evening Standard's charity partner, which sources surplus foods from suppliers and supermarkets. Meghan said: "I’m so proud of the women of the Hubb Community Kitchen, and the continued support the Felix Project gives them to carry out these acts of goodwill, which at this moment are urgently needed. I’m equally moved by the many people who are contributing to the Evening Standard’s campaign to raise money for these vital organisations in the wake of Covid-19."

Omid Scobie reports:

'On Tuesday, April 14, Meghan joined five of the women from the community kitchen via video call from Los Angeles, where she praised them for the hard work they’re about to begin. Hubb kitchen manager Leila Hedjem was on Zoom call alongside Cherine Mallah, Halima Al-Hudafi, Oxana Sinitsyna, and Jennifer Odonkor, who have all met Meghan before.
Also joining the project from Monday is Hubb project manager Intalak Alsaiegh, who has formed a close bond with the duchess during her many visits to the West London-based Al-Manaar Muslim Cultural Centre, where the kitchen is based. She previously told BAZAAR, “She has a big heart and shows us all so much warmth. We’ve always felt like she is one of us. One of our community.”
Another friendly face supporting the efforts is three-Michelin-star chef Clare Smyth, who created the menu for the Sussexes’ May 2018 wedding and has visited the Hubb kitchen on a number of occasions and even helped teach new skills to a number of women involved in this new project. “The work of the Hubb kitchen and the Felix Project is a powerful force for good in our community,” she says. “Their work has never been more important than at this time. Countless charities are more in need now than ever. We must all join forces to take care of the most vulnerable in our society. Providing healthy and nutritious meals is crucial to helping people get through this.”'

It's very much a collaborative effort, with another charity close to the Sussexes' hearts involved. During their day of engagements before the wedding in Cardiff, Wales, Harry introduced his wife-to-be to the work of StreetGames, an organisation the Prince has been working with for several years across the UK. Harry saw the potential for StreetGames' "Fit and Fed" initiative, which focused on the holiday gap which causes hunger and isolation for many young people, to grow and put them in touch with the Hubb. As the Hubb prepares meals for the most vulnerable, StreetGames will be by their side taking care of delivery.

More from the Evening Standard:

'Mark Curtin, Felix’s chief executive, said: “The women of Hubb Community Kitchen have stepped up yet again in the face of a global pandemic. We stand together with all of our partners to get food to people most at risk of experiencing hunger and malnutrition in this time of need.”
Evening Standard proprietor Evgeny Lebedev said: “It is a pleasure to have the backing of the Duchess of Sussex for our campaign. “Her support for the survivors of the Grenfell fire is truly admirable. Our campaign will continue to support the Hubb Community Kitchen, along with so many other essential community organisations at this time.
“This is a crisis, and I am grateful for Meghan’s endorsement.”'

The Evening Standard's Food For London Now campaign is an appeal to fund the delivery of food to the elderly, unwell and most vulnerable Londoners who are self-isolating, confined to their homes and at high risk of falling seriously ill if they contract the virus. Donations will go to the Felix Project, who are working with a range of groups including the Hubb to ensure no one in London is without healthy, nutritious meals. An array of charities, food banks and local community centres are involved in ensuring those most in need are supported.

More from the Felix Project:

'The Coronavirus health crisis impacts every one of us, but none more than the most vulnerable in our society.
As London's biggest food redistribution charity, we are working on overdrive during this lockdown to continue rescuing good food and getting it to people who need it - children, families, the homeless, elderly, people with mental health issues, domestic abuse survivors, refugees and NHS staff.
This month we have delivered over 100 tonnes of food to Londoners in need through our extensive network of over 600 charities, schools, holiday programmes and local community groups.
And yet, this is not enough. More people than ever face hunger in London, now. In order to ensure nobody is left behind, we are working to get food to new distribution hubs in every London borough, as part of the new London Food Alliance.
We need to raise enough funds so we can keep going and reach everyone we need to over the next three months. This is a time like no other and the need is unprecedented. We won’t stop bring food to people in need, for as long as we can, however we can. Join us and help to #FeedLondon.'

Mark Curtin, CEO of the Felix Project said: "The women of Hubb Community Kitchen came together in the face of tragedy and they have stepped up yet again in the face of a global pandemic. At the Felix Project, we have also scaled up our operations very quickly in order to ensure we can meet the increased demand the crisis has created, both here in West London, and across the capital. We stand together with all of our partners to get food to people most at risk of experiencing hunger and malnutrition in this time of need."

This multi-faceted effort is demonstrative of the ripple effect we've heard Meghan speak of. Meghan's work supporting and empowering the women of the Hubb - one of the most inspiring group of people I've ever had the privilege to write about - now moves to its next phase. Grenfell was one of the most devastating tragedies to ever occur in the UK. The bravery and courage of these woman is deeply moving. At a time when Londoners need support more than ever, they put their hands up and asked "What can we do?" - the epitome of community spirit. Through Harry's support of StreetGames, their meals will be delivered to doorsteps all over the capital. Meghan's backing of the Evening Standard's appeal should put paid to the notion they were unwilling to cooperate with the media. Their actions during this crisis when they are on the other side of the pond, speak loudly and clearly to how much the UK means to them.

As ever, Harry and Meghan continue to push ahead with wonderful work. I think it's clear, as Charlotte said, that they very much care about the UK, still, and the projects they started while still senior royals. I still think the Hubb cookbook and the community fostered there is one of Meghan's best projects. It's inspiring to see how these women continue to make an impact.

This is a great reminder of why I admire and follow Meghan. I feel her (and Harry's) work goes beyond just conversation and creates results (or lends a hand in creating results) where they are most needed.

And here I thought we wouldn't be seeing or hearing from the Sussexes for several months. Their work goes on :)

  3. Meghan and Harry have shown that their genuine compassion and determination is all they need to do the work that they want to do. Harry spoke of he and Meghan being a team back in their engagement interview and they continue to prove what a formidable couple they are every day. They are at their best when they are able to just get on with their work without the extra noise. It’s great that they are still committed to their causes here in the UK and in their new home too. They use their reach for good and more importantly, what they contribute and the support they give to others brings real results people can read about and be inspired by.

Thank you for continuing to cover Meghan and Harry on this blog.

Yay...I'm so happy to see that you are covering their ongoing work Charlotte. :) Just because you move, doesn't mean leaving it all behind. Why on earth do some think this, is beyond me. Both Harry and Meghan have been and will continue to be the same generous, caring people, contributing to their causes.

  6. Love reading about the Hubb women, and how various organizations are working togehter. It is the MO of Harry and Megan. It's wonderful to hear these stories of how people are coming together to act for the good of the community. It is not at all surprising that we are hearing about Harry and Meghan working with their patronages and interests in Britain, as they kept their patronages, and foundations. My understanding is that they will not live full time in the UK because they want to get away from the Royal Rota, but it seems to me their royal work continues- they just won't be officially representing the Queen- so no appearances representing her, or receptions, or tree-planting and ribbon cutting, etc. But UK is Harry's home, and he is a British prince, and he and Archie are members of the royal family. LOve seeing these early examples of the work of a bi-continental couple, which is what they have become.

    1. Megan is a member of the royal family too. She’s Harry’s wife and Archie’s mother. I’m not sure why she’s excluded from your assertion.

  7. It's so nice to see this sweet couple out (and in!) doing what they can to help. I love the man to whom they delivered some food who said he recognized Harry and then called Meghan a pretty girl. So cute.

  8. Charlotte,
Wow! What a wealth of positive news you bring.
I agree with other comments that it is really no surprise that they are continuing to act on their beliefs and values.
They inspire me to be more helpful to people who are more negatively impacted by this pandemic than I am.

So happy to see Meghan back ! I definitely knew she and Harry would not let down all the people they worked with during their senior royals short time , I can’t help thinking that those, whoever they are , who were not enough open minded to accept their desire of working differently , those people do have to bear the burden of having made a very big mistake ... well, the point is now over , M & H’s caring heart and generosity will anyway benefit to lots of people , in a way or another, and during the time the whole world is going through’, their love and trust in each other do warm our minds !
Thank you Charlotte for’this’update , I hope you all are safe , take care !

    1. Great to see that Meghan is continuing to support two of the charities she is interested in and nice that Harry is supporting her in this. However I am wondering if Harry is still keeping in touch with Sentebale in Africa. He used to raise funds for this very worthwhile cause which he founded with the African Prince (forgotten his name). As he can't invite people to fundraising events now I hope that the children it supports are managing to cope with the extra pressures. It would be great to have an update on this.

  10. What a wonderful post Charlotte! It's great to get an update on what the incredible women of the Hubb Community Kitchen are up to and how they've expanded their reach. It does prove that everyone, even if you're not a royal, can affect change in their world.

One thing that has stuck with me recently is how Meghan is able to move past the hurt and pain she endured and continue to help others. Lately, I've been in a bit of funk and spending too much time cataloging past hurts and upsets. In the midst of all of this funk, I've thought about Meghan and how she continues to move forward. For instance, Emily Wickstead said some pretty unkind things about Meghan's wedding dress but Meghan continued to wear her clothes and that she choose an Emily Wickstead dress for her final engagement as a senior royal, an engagement that will go down in history, spoke volumes to me about Meghan's ability to move past the hurt, to forgive, to just continue to move forward. Also, the British tabloid press has been absolutely brutal in their coverage of Meghan, completely racist and misogynistic, yet Meghan rises above all that to help support a campaign put forward by the Evening Standard. I guess what I'm really struck by is, in a world and time when so many are stuck in a place of cataloging old hurts, holding grudges and being selfish, it's inspiring and thought provoking to see both Meghan and Harry move past that, rise above it to reach out and help others. Their example has helped me climb out of my hole, put the past where it belongs and know that I too can move forward and through that be of service to others.

  11. Bravo, Meghan and Harry!! I think this is a preview of their ‘new vision for philanthropy.’ They are both synergistic thinkers who are able to identify ways that good organizations can come together a meet needs on a wider scale. They really do have it all — they can both come up with visions and execute them (rare to do both well), as well as bring disparate parts together into a greater whole. All this, and doing the “boots on the ground” work of personally delivering packages door to door. There is so much to love and respect about this couple, and it is becoming clear that their wings are now unclipped. I know that Diana would be so proud, as should Prince Charles and the Cambridges. I hope that they are.

  14. I think it’s fantastic that she continues to show support. I often miss the more than once a year show up for long running patronages in the royal work. Meghan’s extensive behind the scene research before the charity became public was also great to see. I think every royal should have one or two charities that they feature extensively over the course of at least five years. There are obviously a ton of charity engagements and patronages to support but I think it’s ok to single out some if they are really close to your heart. Meghan’s first actions felt like a dream come true in that regard.
Hopefully they can continue to show that they indeed do care about their chosen charities. I am really happy to see this.

  15. I applaud the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their work ethic and integrity. It IS about helping others and they are showing the true passions of their lives. Thank you, Charlotte.

  16. Staying in the same dynamic, I find them admirable the Sussexes. They have the will to help and do it as much as they can, especially since their good will is palpable. I wish them a lot of success. I too thought that we would remain long without news from them and fortunately this is not the case. Thank you Charlotte, luckily I came to take a look and I will do this now daily as they are still as active.

Welcome to Mad About Meghan! We do so look forward to reading your thoughts. Constructive, fair debate is always encouraged. Hateful, derogatory terms and insults are not welcome here. This space focuses on Harry and Meghan, not any other member of the Royal family. It's not the place to discuss politics either. Thank you for reading, we look forward to your comments :)
