Duchess Meghan in Tuxedo Dress for Hamilton & The Sussex Wedding Exhibition!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex kicked off their Autumn schedule this evening at a gala performance of the hit musical Hamilton.

The evening marks the end of the couple's summer break: before the wedding of Charlie van Straubenzee and Daisy Jenks they joined Charles and Camilla at the Queen Mother's former Scottish retreat the Castle of Mey for a relaxing break. Reporter Omid Scobie said: "Meghan has developed a warm and close relationship with both Charles and Camilla. She particularly adores her father-in-law, who has been incredibly supportive." The Sussexes also enjoyed an idyllic four days with George and Amal Clooney at Lake Como, as well as time at their country bolthole in the Cotswolds.

They were both all smiles as they stepped out at the Victoria Palace Theatre.

Harry and Meghan were warmly welcomed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the show's book, music, lyrics and starred in the titular role on Broadway. In addition to Hamilton, he is known for creating and staring in the successful musical In The Heights and is set to co-star in the upcoming film Mary Poppins Returns. Miranda's awards include a Pulitzer Prize, three Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award, a MacArthur Fellowship, and three Tony Awards. The star is also admired for his activism and philanthropic efforts. He met with politicians in 2016 to speak out in favor of debt relief for Puerto Rico, and raised funds for rescue efforts and disaster relief after Hurricane Maria struck the island in 2017.

More from the Mail Online:

'Speaking to Miranda, 38, ahead of the show, Prince Harry said: 'Guys congratulations in bringing it over here... Thank you for doing this for Sentebale. It means so much to us and it’s going to be a fun night.'
Meghan, who has watched the show on both sides of the Atlantic, asked Miranda: 'Have you seen it yet in London? Because I found it so amazing to watch how that plays versus here [UK] and the response is so different but everyone loves it.'
Speaking to reporters after meeting the royals, Miranda said: 'The prince’s sixth-great grandfather is a character so that’ll be fun and surreal for all of us. You don’t get that every day. You get heads of state, we’ve had some popular folks come see our show but you don’t often get a direct descendent of one of your main characters. They [Harry and meghan] said they were huge fans of the show. It’s a huge honour for me.'

The Duchess chatted with Lin-Manuel about how much her friend Abigail Spencer loves Hamilton. "We were born on the same day, same year, so we are so close". There's a very good video of the meeting below.

Meghan is a huge fan of the musical, it is third time she's seen it. In 2016, she joined her friend Priyanka Chopra in New York and in February she and Harry enjoyed a showing in London. Tonight's performance raised awareness and funds for Sentebale's work with children and young people affected by HIV in southern Africa.

Prince Harry founded Sentebale with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006 following Harry's gap year to Lesotho two years previously. The charity supports the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people affected by HIV in Lesotho and Botswana. Sentebale’s programmes of education and care provide the tools and knowledge this vulnerable generation need to live long, happy, healthy lives. The fundraising event follows a hugely successful polo match hosted by the couple last month which raised over £1 million for the charity.

Johnny Hornby, Chairman, Sentebale commented:

'We are delighted to partner with HAMILTON for what promises to be a very special evening, raising funds and awareness for our work with children and young people affected by HIV in southern Africa.”
UNAIDS reports that globally, 1,700 new HIV infections occur every day among young people, and stigma remains a major factor preventing youth accessing lifesaving health services. Despite advancements in treatment and care, young people are lagging behind on multiple fronts — knowledge of HIV, HIV testing, treatment and prevention. It is in this context that Sentebale has developed a youth centred approach to impact the lives of children and young people across southern Africa.'

Harry and Meghan take their seats.

They sat with Lin-Manuel Miranda and his wife Vanessa.

They greeted other guests before the show began.

Hamilton is the Olivier, Tony and Grammy award-winning production that tells the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. An immigrant from the West Indies, Hamilton became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and helped shape the foundations of the America we know today.

The score blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway, and originally opened at the Public Theatre in New York in 2015. Later that year, the Broadway production opened and in December 2017 the London production opened at the newly re-built and restored Victoria Palace Theatre.

A peek inside before guests took their seats.

The New Yorker described the show as "an achievement of historical and cultural reimagining". The costumes and set reflect the period, with "velvet frock coats and knee britches. The set is a wooden scaffold against exposed brick; the warm lighting suggests candlelight". The musical is mostly sung and rapped all the way through, with little dialogue isolated outside of the musical score.

Miranda said that the portrayal of Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and other white historical figures by black and Hispanic actors should not require any substantial suspension of disbelief by audience members. "Our cast looks like America looks now, and that's certainly intentional", he said. "It's a way of pulling you into the story and allowing you to leave whatever cultural baggage you have about the founding fathers at the door." He noted "We're telling the story of old, dead white men but we're using actors of color, and that makes the story more immediate and more accessible to a contemporary audience.

People reports:

'On top of honoring her American roots, the musical gives a nod to Meghan’s feminist beliefs.
“You want a revolution? I want a revelation. So listen to my declaration: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.’ And when I meet Thomas Jefferson, I’m ‘a compel him to include women in the sequel!'” the character of Angelica Schuyler sings in the show.'

Addressing the audience, Harry burst into song for a moment before thanking them for supporting Sentebale. The perfect end to the night :)

Lin-Manuel said: “The show talks a lot about legacy...Tonight, because you came to see a show, we’ve raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to make a better life for people through the amazing work Sentebale does. That’s part of the true legacy that we get to pay forward.”

Smiles all round after the show.

Emily Andrews tweeted: "Hamilton was AMAZING!! What a rollercoaster! It’s Meghan’s favourite show and I can see why! Harry & Meghan posed with the show’s cast backstage and they were delighted to meet them. Note Harry holding his wife close."

A video of the couple meeting with the cast. Meghan turns to Harry and asks "Can you see my love?".

Emily revealed Meghan told a cast member Harry loves the show so much he can't stop singing the songs.

Meghan selected the Digital dress by Canadian brand Judith & Charles.

The $595 dress is described as: "Double-breasted tuxedo dress. Peak lapels. Two by three front button closure. Two patch pockets at front. Lined." It's currently available for pre-order. The brand confirmed the look was styled by Meghan's friend Jessica Mulroney.

More on the background of the brand:

'The origin of Judith & Charles is a classic tale of girl meets boy, and another of life’s enduring themes: sometimes great things happen when you least expect them. He was a charming Frenchman with an undeniable joie de vivre and entrepreneurial spirit. She was a talented young woman with an instinctive eye for fashion that combined both artistry and function. Their chance meeting on a Caribbean Island set the story of Judith & Charles in motion.
Each Judith & Charles collection is a deliberate fusion and contrast of Judith and Charles: feminine softness and strength are integrated with the inspirations of well-structured menswear. The instinct to design and manufacture eighty percent of the collection locally means we are both homegrown and supportive of the local economy. It also allows us to have full control over our production, pushing our strongest assets - fit and quality - to the forefront.
At Judith & Charles, we want to override any uncertainty women feel choosing or wearing clothing. We aim to facilitate the confidence, strength and comfort women need in the boardroom, at a first interview, or on a weekend. We continue this theme by supporting causes close to our hearts and women worldwide. We are proud sponsors of Dress for Success Montreal, an organization dedicated to the advancement of women in business.'

Meghan's Suits co-star and friend Sarah Rafferty with founder Charles in 2016. I imagine it's a label Meghan's been familiar with for some time.

Several ladies on social media noted the dress is reminiscent of a Felipe Varela design Queen Letizia has worn.

The Duchess accessorised with her £225 Shaun Leane Vermeil Talon earrings. Described as:"A strikingly elegant piece from the Signature Tusk Collection, these iconic double sided talon earrings in silver are the perfect balance of elegance and edge."

Meghan wore a new pair of 'Pump-It-Up' shoes by British designer Paul Andrew. They are part of the pre-Spring 2019 collection.

And Meghan carried a new textured clutch.

The Telegraph's review of Meghan's look tonight. I very much agree with this take:

'Since joining the royal family 102 days ago (who’s counting?) Meghan has been adjusting to a new way of life, and subsequently, undoubtedly, it has had an impact on her wardrobe. Neat sheath dresses, ruffly fascinators and colour-matched tights have all been experimented with, to mixed success.
But tonight, she wasn’t at a garden party on her husband’s family’s (literal) turf. Nor was she visiting a bridge with her grandmother-in-law, or attending a christening with her new relatives en masse. She was at the theatre - her passion, her home- and for the occasion, she dressed accordingly.
For anyone who was worried that Meghan had been entirely Duchess-ified since marriage, this outfit will serve as a palette cleanser, maybe even a reminder of the former style persona we used to know and like a lot. It was still an ‘appropriate’ dress for her new life, don't get me wrong. It’s smart and formal, business-like and black - all entirely inoffensive traits.
The message here was that the Duchess knows when to toe the line, when to follow the unspoken royal style rules, when to put on the tights. But she also knows when and how to push the envelope, just as we had hoped that she might. And tonight was a prime opportunity to do it.'

Hamilton isn't the only news of interest we have to share. The Palace has announced a very exciting new exhibition which will certainly be of interest to royal fans. The wedding outfits of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will go on display at Windsor Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh in 2018 and 2019 respectively in a special exhibition 'A Royal Wedding: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex'.

Meghan's timeless Givenchy gown promises to be the star of the show.

More from the press release:

'The Duchess of Sussex’s wedding dress was created by the British designer Clare Waight Keller, Artistic Director at the historic French fashion house Givenchy. The Duchess chose Ms Waight Keller for her timeless and elegant aesthetic, and for the impeccable tailoring of her creations. The Duchess and Ms Waight Keller worked closely together on the design.
The dress is made from an exclusive double-bonded silk cady, developed by Ms Waight Keller following extensive research in fabric mills throughout Europe. True to the heritage of the House of Givenchy, the graceful lines of the dress were achieved using six meticulously placed seams. These extend towards the back of the dress, where the train flows in soft round folds cushioned by an underskirt in triple silk organza. One of the main features of the dress is the boat neckline bodice.'

The Palace added: "The five-metre-long veil is made from silk tulle and embroidered with the flora of the 53 countries of the Commonwealth, a reference to an important part of the Duke and Duchess's official work following His Royal Highness’s appointment as Commonwealth Youth Ambassador."

The Duchess added two of her favourite flowers to the embroidered decoration: Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox), which grows in the grounds of Kensington Palace in front of Nottingham Cottage, and the California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica), the state flower of the Duchess's place of birth, California. Embroidered ears of wheat, symbolising love and charity, are symmetrically placed at the front of the veil, which is edged with embroidered organza flowers. It took the team of embroiderers hundreds of hours to create the design, washing their hands every 30 minutes to keep the tulle and threads pristine.

On public display for the first time, Queen Mary's Diamond Bandeau. The beautiful tiara is formed as a flexible band of eleven sections, pavé set with large and small brilliant diamonds in a geometric design. The centre is set with a detachable brooch of ten brilliant diamonds. The bandeau was made in 1932 for Her Majesty's grandmother, Queen Mary, and specifically designed to accommodate the centre brooch. This brooch was given to the then Princess Mary in 1893 by the County of Lincoln on her marriage to Prince George, Duke of York (the future King George V). The bandeau and the brooch were bequeathed to Her Majesty by Queen Mary in 1953.

As Harry still uses his frockcoat uniform of the Household Cavalry (Blues & Royals), an identical uniform made for the Prince will feature in the exhibition. The uniform's single-breasted blue doeskin jacket has figured braiding of Regimental pattern on the stand-up collar and sleeves. It is ranked to Major with large gold embroidered crowns on the epaulettes.  The trousers, officially called 'overalls', are made from a blue and black wool barathea and are fastened by a leather strap and buckle underneath the boot.

The exhibition will be shown at Windsor from 26 October to 6 January. Tickets are now available on the Royal Collection Trust website. From 13 June to 6 October 2019, the exhibition will feature at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Tickets will be available from 1 November.

Following the displays, the Royal Collection Trust will make a donation to the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. It promises to be an unforgettable exhibition. It was splendid to see high-res images of Meghan's veil, the attention to detail is incredible.

************

Finally, Meghan's popular J Crew Tipped topcoat in Italian stadium-cloth wool is now available in sizes 00 - 24. The estimated shipping date for most sizes is 12 September. It's described as: "Made especially for us by Italy's Nello Gori mill, this stadium-cloth wool is inspired by the fabric used in old-school stadium blankets. It adds warmth without the bulk—and we've been using it in our collection every year since 2006."

It was great to see Harry and Meghan back in action in support of Sentebale. What did you think of the night and Meghan's look?

Honestly, to me , a total miss ! First time I say that .... mark m’y words, I am not against short skirts, but first her legs are very’ thin and bony and’ second she does not really position her legs properly , which does not show when she wears longer skirts , which attract the look towards her very thin ankles . I dreamed of her wearing a tuxedo .... nos shirt under, just the jacket’ and trouser .....

  3. She looks beautiful! I would love the dress more if it were a tad bit longer though. The porportions seem unbalanced with the height of the heel and the straight lines of the skirt.

    1. Exactly! At first I was thinking it was just plain too short but in reading your comment, I think you are exactly right. I'm not generally a fan of skirts quite that short in general, for any woman, any age, but there did seem to be (for me) something else I could't put my finger on. Thanks!

    2. I agree. I would like it much better if it were a bit longer.

Absolutely Erika , lack of balance .....

      Delete
    4. Hi Erika, I have to respectfully disagree, I think a longer hem would throw this whole look off and make it a bit frumpy.

      Delete
    5. I think it depends on how much longer. I like the dress a lot. I just think a smidge longer -- no more than an inch or two -- would look a bit better and not look frumpy. Especially with a pair of ankle strap shoes!

But keep in mind I absolutely love the pencil skirt length and style she wears a lot.

      Delete
    6. That's fine, Lauri. All of us have our own unique aesthetic sensibilities.

      Delete
    7. Exactly, bluhare. Nothing dramatic. Just a tad bit longer.

      Delete
    8. I'm with you on the length of the dress, I think I'd like it a bit longer on her.
If I recall this is the first time she wore such a mini dress, something I think we won't see a lot.

But what I would like to add is how gorgeous, confident she looks, her posture is amazing too. Someone wrote here how much she is at ease and looks much more relaxed, and I totally agree. It is obvious looking at these photos, and who could tell she is royal for a few months.

Lovely cause and night to return to work!

    9. Anett, you're absolutely right. I agree!

  4. She looks great in black and I am happy the summer break is over. I think this dress might have been a staple in her wardrobe. She didn#T came naked to the UK so I guess some outfits are just new to us. And I saw some more photos on dailymail just seconds before and I have a kind of feeling she is already pregnant ... hope so. And in the end - it is about the themes and courses they pick and support no matter what the wear.

    1. Pregnant? Wouldn't that be lovely for them.

    2. Just saw more angles of her in People and dress is fitted to her body. Pregnant - doubtful

      Delete
    3. I agree I think she's pregnant.

      Delete
    4. The dress is form fitting, yes. The reason why I think she's expecting is her face. In certain photos and videos I've seen, there's something just a bit different about it.

Reminds me of Kate - when she was pregnant, she first showed in her facial features (in my opinion). Of course these changes are subtle....who knows. Time will tell...I certainly think due to her age and the rate their relationship has moved, it won't be long before they announce a baby's on the way!

      Delete
    5. I really don't think so guys. They have a huge tour of Australia/New Zealand coming up in just a couple of weeks; I think she'd be crazy to fall pregnant before then and run the risk of morning sickness interfering with the tour itinerary. I don't think they'll start trying for a family until after the tour is over, but I'm very much hoping that we might have another royal baby to look forward to sometime next year.

      Delete
    6. I am not sure that Meghan and Harry would consider conceiving prior to their tour for several reasons, but one very important reason is that there is a Zika virus outbreak in Fiji and Tonga. While I'm sure precautions are always taken to ensure the health and safety of royal family members when traveling, it is not always easy to prevent things like mosquito bites. Normally such a bite would be a mere afterthought, but when the bite could potentially transmit the Zika virus, that is a risk not worth taking when it comes to pregnancy.

      Delete
    7. The tour is the roadblock to this theory for sure. But....things happen when they happen. I agree the most likely choice is a pregnancy announcement in 2019.

      Delete
    8. I'm so disappointed to see the pregnancy guessing game come up so quick. Sigh.
I loved the look. Loved. But I thought she and Harry saw "The Curious Case of the Dog..." (etc) play, not Hamilton? I might be wrong:)
      They look so happy:)

      Delete
    9. I agree with Helen H and Anonymous at 11:54 . Another thing to consider is that at 37 Meghan would be advanced maternal age and would fall under high risk pregnancy. I don’t thing her doctor would sign of on a grueling 2-3 week tour on the other side of the world during her first trimester.

      Delete
    10. Given her age and the fact that her other marriage was childless, I think that if they want children they would have started on that journey by now, and these things do take time for women her age. Please do not think I am bashing her for her age, quite the opposite. I had my last child when I was 49, but convention did not come along quite as quickly as with the others.

  5. Love the fact that she looks young in something shorter

    6. We all know that Meghan is a longtime yoga lover. Having practiced yoga myself for more than 15 years, and currently contemplating taking the training to become an instructor, I can’t tell you ladies that her beautiful posture is definitely at least in part due to her years of yoga. For anyone wishing to improve their own posture, consider taking up yoga or perhaps a Ballet Beautiful type class. Plus the “outfits” that you get to wear to class are so much fun! Enjoy your day, everyone🙂

      Delete
    7. Hi Anonymous - I hope you do become an instructor and if you do, good luck and have fun with the training. A great instructor can really inspire - I've had some over the year who are brilliant and make a yoga class even more enjoyable. For anyone thinking about starting doing yoga I want to say "give it a go, it's worth it".

  12. I have to say I’m not a fan of this look for Meghan. It doesn’t flatter her nice figure and draws the eye towards her legs, which really aren’t her best feature.

Also, this wasn’t a high profile event with the Queen, a repeat would have made sense. And would have muted some of the ''Meghan spends astronomical sums on clothes’’ articles I’ve seen in the tabloids.
For Example, here’s a couple of her pre-Harry dresses she could have worn:

    1. Considering she probably already had a wardrobe full of designer clothes/shoes/bags it's hard to know how much she spends on new things.

    2. Hi Sofy - I think the purpose is to draw the eye to her legs, which I think, look fantastic...it doesn't flatter her figure because she doesn't look as slim...possibly she is pregnant?? This style is a similar 'coat-dress' style she has worn before and looked good on her

      Delete
    3. and she still has time to wear these dresses if she likes or even if she still has. Many actresses are loaned outfits to wear and then they give them back to the fashion houses....

      Delete
    4. Just curious...what's wrong with her legs?

      Delete
    5. Lol, there is nothing wrong with her legs. They are slim, toned and delicate like the rest of her body and people are just jealous. Luckily, Meghan appears to know this herself and is not afraid to show them off at the appropriate occasions, which this Hamilton evening is one.

      Delete
    6. Anon 11:58, comments about her legs or clothing choices does not necessarily mean jealousy:). She has a lovely slim build and should wear what ever skirt length she likes but I also do not think her legs are her best feature, but like everything else her build is her build and she should dress as she likes.

      Delete
    7. Please don’t dismiss other posters as “just jealous.” It’s unkind, and also really presumptuous.

      Delete
    8. Considering my legs look much like Meghan’s I’m hardly jealous. I just don’t find this type of leg attractive, much prefer legs with more muscly defined calves, smooth knees
      and not spindly thin ankles.
Meghan also has a tendency to twist her ankles when in high heels which makes it look like she had a break that didn’t heal correctly.

      Delete
    9. For everybody pulling the jealous card every time when someone doesn’t like something about Meghan I hope you are aware that the word ‘jealous’ makes your whole argument nonsensical and fall on deaf ears. You have no idea who is behind the screen or what they look like, some of us might actually be young, attractive, slim or rich ourselves. Many are probably not, but not liking a dress or a physical feature does not make a person jealous.

      Delete
    10. The jealous argument, if you want to call it an argument has been used on Duchess Kate blog and pretty much everywhere else since the internet took off, usually by people who can't think of anything else to say. I've been accused of being a jelly h8r more times than I can count and, at the end of the day, who cares.

    12. I agree sofy, Meghan has several outfits she could have repeated for this event. Even Queens in other countries repeat the same clothes in the span of 3 months. The ‘building her wardrobe’ is going to work only for so long. Repeating outfits is an easy PR win, I don’t understand why her team hasn’t taken advantage of it.

      Delete
    13. I do agree that a recycle is a smart move, but I'm having a difficult time imagining that a PR person would "go there" with a member of the RF; I believe it comes down to personal judgement (Meghan's).

    2. I agree CrissieP, I do think that many look to Meghan's sister-in-law as the model of how a young-ish Duchess should dress without taking into consideration how very different these two women are. Imho, the differences just mean that theres something for everybody.

      Delete
    3. I personally look to women like Mary and Letizia for what I’d like Meghan to wear. Kate doesn’t even come to mind, not everyone is a super fan of her fashion.

      Delete
    4. CrissieP you are so right! Kate and Meghan are so different and I just HATE it when people try to pit them against each other.

      Delete
    5. Letizia has long been my favorite royal fashion inspiration, plus my posture guru and Mary's style is also so fresh, modern and one I could see myself emulating. Meghan could certainly do worse than looking at these two lovely royal ladies for fashion inspiration but personally I think she's doing fine on her own.

      Delete
    6. Well said. Meghan’s style is fashion-forward and modern. Some people will never get it!

      Delete
    7. I just posted a very similar comment before reading this one! Meghan IS very fashion-forward, which makes for some exciting clothes-watching! Sometimes the outfits are a real "no" for me, but it's always interesting. I agree that Mary is a real style icon. I love Kate, too, and her taste is more traditional and conservative.

      Delete
    8. I think we simply love different things, I love this outfit and the short skirt is OK for a theater show but I don't like the trend of bare legs on anyone actress princess or simple normal young woman that all seems having embraced all over the world, I just think legs are more chic and maybe more sexy too with pantyhoses. And this has nothing to do with comparing Meghan with anyone else, I used to wear hose and shirt skirt all the time when I went to dance back then in the days way before I started too follow the young royals. It's just what I like :)

    9. Anonymous 23:32 it could be her American sensibility. I'm American, in my mid-fifties and have always worked in finance where business attire was more conservative. When I began my career, women didn't wear pants to work(!). We're now at a point where many American women have shed pantyhose - and not just young women - mature women too. It took me a little while to get used to putting my bare feet into pumps, but I'm over it and that ship has sailed! Most business women in the US - even very senior executives - don't wear hose except in cold weather. Pantyhose sales must be very weak. From what I can tell, Meghan will not be wearing hose unless she is attending more solemn and formal events and/or is with the Queen.

    10. Silvia, I agree with you; I think panty hose (and I'm talking about high end and ultra sheer for an evening look) are a sexy and polished look. Foundation for the legs. ;-)

    12. An interesting small discussion on pantyhose - sort of surprised that no one has mentioned the men in their lives. My husband adores the look of high end hose in beautiful shoes - a very elegant and sexy look. I love my husband and take pleasure in wearing them when we are dressed up and going out - Wolford makes exquisite leg wear - don’t miss out , ladies - you’ll be surprised how it elevates and completes an outfit🙂

    13. I actually do not think of Meghans fashion choices as being particularly "fashion forward". She has lovely taste but it is pretty classic and fairly mainstream and more conservative. At least what I have seen over the past year, never knew of her before.

      Delete
    14. CrissieP, I understand about the pantyhose. I’m in my late 50s and never leave the house without a half slip. I found a brand of undershorts that work too. (Thigh Love, online) My legs are not attractive so I prefer sheer hose, or in the hotter months where I live, make up or tan spray.

  15. I didn't like the look from the "first look" photo, but the additional photos and the video I saw makes me like it a lot more. So I'm not sure what it is about that first photo. She looks glamorous and sexy for a date night!

I think she looks great - and isn't afraid of fashion! I remember Reese Witherspoon doing the exact same outfit to an award show this year. I do prefer the black look compared to Reese's teal. Look out folks - a new fashionista is in the house. And I think she has fabulous legs - I noticed another reader didn't think these were Meghan's best quality - I beg to differ.

  17. Meghan is a beautiful woman, so she naturally looks good in most outfits. But I have to say I’m not a fan of this look.
On the other hand, my prediction of black and another new outfit was correct.

  20. I can't say whether I like this dress or not -- I'm somehow on the fence about it. I really like the idea of it, but the effect isn't what I would hope for it. She looks very elegant, though, and modern. I don't mind the length of the skirt, but I was surprised at the neckline. I'm not usually one to comment on that, but it seemed deeper than what the royals usually wear -- perhaps it's because the dress also has a shorter hem than usual.

I looooove that they sat with Lin. He's the best. His comment about Prince Harry being the 6th great-grandchild of one of the characters is so hilarious -- I'd never thought of that! I wish I could be in their place tonight. I love Hamilton, and seeing it with Lin Manuel-Miranda would be perfect.

    1. Much deeper necklines have been worn by the other royals before and frequently. And for those commenting on shorter hem lengths, Kate and Sophie have worn plenty before. A quick search will show that. And Meghan doesnt havea big chest, so it doesnt look bad.

    2. I think the neckline is fine. I think I would have liked a sparkler with it, though. The neck looks naked and a gorgeous necklace would offset it just right.

    3. I agree with you Becca H, I'm on the fence about this dress. This may sound old-fashioned of me but I kind of like my royals to be stylish - not fashionable. This dress hits all the wrong notes for me because it's just so bland. A lovely strapless 3/4 length dress with sparkling jewels and maybe a pashmina draped over her shoulders would have worked beautifully for an evening event like this - not so formal but still elegant.

      Just my 2 cents :)

Her Tuxedo dress is totally in vogue as we go into Fall. I thought The Telegraph article was completely on target in regard to Meghans choice. Tonights attire represent a return to current professional fashion for a women her age and a reminder of the fact that she is American!!! Her legs match her smile, totally killer.

  26. Meghan looks fantastic - so modern, classy and confident. I love that she doesnt’t endure the media attention, but actually thrives in it. She is bringing out the best in Harry - he looks confident and happy - what a great duo - so much charisma!! Meghan has super slim legs, her entire body type is fine boned and even somewhat delicate. I am perplexed why some people appear to find that unattractive - she looks gorgeous, toned, and quite feminine beside her handsome husband. I find her “petite” frame delightful. I cannot help but think that the negative comments re her lovely legs in particular are “ the green eyed monster”.

Also, I absolutely love Hamilton! Lin Manuel rocks! What a great way to support this important charity!

  30. While this isn't my personal style (don't have the legs for it!), I think Meghan looks smashing here! Chic and sophisticated, as always, with a bit of an edge. Her make-up and jewelry are great, too. Perfect look for this kind of thing, I think.

It's interesting to me that Meghan's style seems to be similar to Queens Letizia and Raina or Princess Mary of Denmark - more fashion forward. Kate's style is much more in keeping with English tradition, which I guess makes sense as she is English and the future queen. It's fun to see their differences in taste. I think we can expect exciting stuff from Meghan!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Just because she is future queen doesn't automatically mean she has to dress traditionally infact Kate has worn clothes with shorter hemlines and deep necks. Its just individual preference. Lets not perpetuate non existent notms

      Delete
    2. Certainly! I’m not saying that she has to or should dress any way. I just think her style has always been more traditional than Meghan’s and she has grown more so as she’s gotten older, become a mom, gotten more established as a royal.

  32. Meghan looks good, but as usual, I have some stuff to complain about:

-I'm missing a pop of color somewhere.

-I'm not 100% sold on the proportions of the dress. The bust area looks a little weird, and I find it too short for an official appearance. I like it like this for a date night, etc, but given that it doesn't even reach her knees (it's quite a little higher than that), I don't think it works successfully here.

  34. I love this. She looks so good in these chic business lady outfits, and this is perfect for the event. My only nit is that I always want her to have more substantial earrings when she has her hair up. I would also love a metallic shoe with this, but these black ones are fine.

  36. I want to like this look on Meghan. The length is fine, she has the shape for it, but I don't think I like having a short hemline and a deep neckline at the same time. But she looks lovely, very chic and appropriate for the occasion. I don't like that articles about her fashion so often state that the look is styled by Jessica Mulroney though. To me that smacks of promotion of Jessica and I just take offense to it. Personally, I think Meghan looks best when Jessica isn't part of the equation, but perhaps that's just me. I'm not a fan of Jessica Mulroney. A great charity event for Harry's Sentebale. Glad to see them looking so happy together. Harry will always be Meghan's best accessory in my books. Not that she isn't terrific in her own right (don't jump on me), I just think Harry looks so much happier since she came into his life.

    1. I haven't really been paying attention to when she has and hasn't been styled by Jessica Muloroney so can't comment on whether Meghan looks better with/without her, but I do think she looks fab here. I do agree with you that it seems a bit off that it's often stated that Jessica's styled her. Even the tweet the brand her dress is from said Meghan was styled by her. Good for Jessica for getting her name out there and being successful, but it does seem that she's now profiting from her personal relationship with a royal and that doesn't seem right somehow to me

      Delete
    2. Me in Vancouver and Rebecca H -
It bothers me as well that Jessica Mulroney is somehow benefiting from her friendship with the Duchess. It somehow seems very grasping and not classy. If Meghan wants to use her as a stylist, that’s their business, but it almost feels like Meghan’s being used because of her position now. Then again, I didn’t follow Meghan until it became obvious that an engagement was going to happen, so I don’t know if Jessica always took credit for Meghan’s clothes.

      Delete
    3. I agree about Mulroney. She has wasted no time in promoting herself -- even at the wedding.

      Delete
    4. Jessica Mulroney comes across as ‘’thirsty’’, as the kids say today. Not a good combination with a high-profile royal.

Designers mentioning Jessica in press releases makes it sound like they paid her to dress Meghan in their clothes, since she isn’t hired by KP. I’ve also heard rumors that designers send free goodies to Jessica and she then sends them along to Meghan.
Not a good idea for anyone involved.

      Delete
    5. Doesn’t every brand, designer and fashion house issue a press release or statement when Meghan and Kate wear their product? Why is “self promotion” frowned upon in this instance? Amanda/US

      Delete
    6. Amanda, for me it's like Sally said - when press releases mention Jessica Mulroney in a press release, it sounds like she was paid a commission by them to put Meghan in their clothes, or that she said to them "I'll get Meghan in your clothes, if you mention me". So she's profiting off Meghan. It's different with a brand, whether or not they put out a press release, people will find out where it's from (and buy it) most of the time.

It's just that royals must be so careful not to (or appear to) have financial interests in a company and then use their position to promote that company - and it's the same if someone they have a personal relationship with uses them to promote a company they have commercial interests in (I don't if this is making any sense). Like officials can't award government contracts to companies their friends own (extreme example I know)

I don't have a problem with articles written that Jessica might have a hand in like 'Meghan's stylist gives her tips!', or things like 'Meghan's stylist looks great in instagram photo/is spotted on the street' etc. It's out there that she's Meghan's stylist, and so she will have success and media interest from that alone, is it necessary for her to be thanked publicly (or even paid) by brands for putting Meghan in their clothes as well?

      Delete
    7. I have wondered if Jessica is still acting as Meghans stylist. It was not clear how much Meghan used her in the past, maybe only for certain photo shoots or public appearances? I am not sure how much she uses her now. I agree her name gets promoted but it maybe that Megha is very happy for her friend to let things be known about Jessica and her connection to Meghan to help promote Jessica's business.

  37. Meghan exuded understated chic. This was not a red carpet event (they arrived through the back door) and Meghan and Harry were more like special guests at an evening theatre performance. The music was hip hop and rap. A gown,IMHO, would have just been not cool, and overdressing. She is out in support of her husband's charity as his stylish and charming wife. I thought she looked smashing. The thing about Meghan's style, is that she is able to surprise. She always stops one step short of what some would think would make her look more complete- no blingy earrings or necklace, no metallic shoes or nail polish, no bright color. Sometimes we react like the child waiting for the princess to come in a tiara and ball gown, and don't think she is doing justice to her position. I think Meghan may define princess anew- she is one who serves.

I do want to comment on Meghan's poise and demeanor this evening. I was very impressed at how easily she interacts with people with her lovely smile and relaxed yet perfect posture. I don't easily interact with others and finding someone to emulate is critical to me in navigating day to day interactions, for many years it was the Queen but now I think I've found a new source of inspiration. 3. Anonymous 02:08, I don't find this appalling at all. A gentleman always steps aside for a lady to go in first. Is it appalling because he is a blood royal and she isn't? I don't think this generation of royals cares about all of that. Harry is happy to let his new wife shine. That means he is secure. Meghan is clearly comfortable meeting new people, being snapped by the press, etc., so good for her. It makes for an easier adjustment. 47. I like this dress a lot, just not on Meghan. For one as people have pointed out her proportions are a bit awkward to be wearing such a short skirt. Kate favors shorter hemlines because she has long thighs and short calves. Meghan has very short thighs and rather long, reedy calves. That's why she looks so smashing in those midi-skirts. A longer skirt would have looked better.

The other thing is the pure black suit needed cuter shoes. The rather boring pumps don't do much for the outfit.

But thing #3: am I detecting a bit of a baby bump on her? She's certainly fuller in all the right places.

The simplicity of the dress and the shortness of the train really shows off the ethereal effect of the veil, and the sparkle of the tiara shows off the beauty of the fabric and lines of the dress. This is a bit off topic, but as an American, I'm curious about the popularity of the royal family. I've always read that the queen is the most popular royal, but I'd like to ask a question, especially to our UK friends. If the queen, William and Kate, and Harry and Meghan all had separate engagements on the same day, and you could be in the front row to shake hands and speak with them, which royal would you most want to meet, and why?

Also, there have been quite a few scandals amongst the royal family, but never a whiff of the Queen doing anything improper. I'd also want to meet her because she won't be here forever (sadly.). The others have many more years to prove themselves. And, we don't follow the Queen for what she wears, but rather for what she does.

  55. Thanks, Charlotte. Hamilton reads as though it would be most enjoyable. I liked the Duchess of Sussex’s look tonight. I enjoy that she is “mixing it up”. Remember, she was an actress; she is American; Los Angeles born and raised, and is a feminist. That is saying a lot. But, she is NOT the Duchess of Cambridge. I hope they are friends, but they are two different ladies with their own fashion style. I embrace the more chic minimalist look of the Duchess of Sussex, and I like the fashion selections of the Duchess of Cambridge. Both ladies have had “hits and misses”. So have we. Therefore, to me, it was a fun night at the theatre and I hope they raised a lot of money for a very worthy cause.

  63. At the second look , I see the photos showing a modern dress with a riff on a classic style. If the dress were longer it would hang like a coat. For this occasion, a fund raiser which was not red carpet, the black dress choice was perfect. (Yes I admit this once , I liked her in black). It’s a treat to see Prince Harry glowing and happy. Charlotte, thank you for the close up photos of the embroidery on her wedding veil. I love and appreciate embroidery. On a personal note, I went to a meeting and used the Sussex & Cambridge technique of looking everyone right in the eyes, and not glancing around the room. It works to make people feel comfortable. I’ve been asked to run for a position on the Board of Directors for the group. Yipes! It worked too well 😭

  65. For me I'm just not a fan of bare legs. It would be like a man who wore dress shoes with no socks! I think the effect is jarring. I grew up in the era where people dressed up to go to H.S. I think the bare legs are "too casual" for the dressed up night look she has. It's like wearing a jeans bottom with a tuxedo top. Blueskygal AZ USA

    1. Isn't it nice we are no longer in that era?! We women no longer have to wear corsets or cover our ankles....it's good to be free :)

    2. It's a generational thing. I'm 10 years older than her & I HATE hose. I would wear pants every day if I had to wear them. I think it looks much better without if you have nice tan legs.

    3. Preposterous that anyone would criticize her legs. They are spectacular and this outfit oozes confidence. She looks radiant. If I had her legs I would rock this outfit too!

    4. I am 4 years older than her and always wear stockings for formal occasions. So foes my 17 years old daughter. I agree with Blueskygal, bare legs and an evening dress are jaring and look strange in winter IMO.

  66. I love her hair (hate to bring it up- but this is the perfect occasion for the not so sleek hair. Well done!) and make up and the top of the dress. Would have preferred a different skirt or indeed pants. Just because the skirt takes away from her upper half and that one looks smashing.

My first reaction to seeing her face was that she is pregnant, not sure but my mind just went there. her face seems fuller? I like her outfit but it seems a little tight with all the side creases, but maybe its just supposed to look like that? like the clutch and Ive always liked her ring, would rather have hers as diamonds match anything:) this seems like the most comfortable ive seen her, they look so happy, sparkly happy love eyes in the photos!! sigh:)
not even going to bother reading the other comments, just going to enjoy the pictures and the happiness they convey. Thanks Charlotte!!

    1. I agree. I immediately went to "pregnant!" when I saw her face. That's been the tell-tale sign for Catherine as well. M&H have the big tour next month, so I'd be surprised if she is..but..maybe she's been taking fertility medicine for when the time comes which would explain the fullness in her facial features?

  68. I feel this is a knock-out win for Meghan. She's not dressing for the masses, she's dressing for herself and Harry. It reminds me slightly of the silverish metallic short dress that she wore on a red carpet. I have to say, I like a tuxedo dress - used to have one in my closet as well. I saw a picture of the back and cut is interesting. I actually think it fits and 'suits' her well. ;-)

I do find Meghan's choice of jewelry interesting. I'd love to see some more bling - I live more vicariously for that element than the clothing. Looking forward to someone ID'ing her clutch. Closed toe shoes were right for this dress and I find the bare legs, interesting. I'd do the same if I were that fit and that age. Sadly not.

And we get to see her again in just a few more days. I bet she'll wear slacks at the next event, and then a tea length or full length gown (or maybe cocktail - would like to see the burgundy lace dress at some point).

Really enjoying getting to see more of Meghan and Harry

  69. i think meghans face is just beautiful and her figure is fine but i agree with those who say her legs are not her best feature. they are not only thin but have very little calf definition. the problem with this dress for me is that it doesnt fit her properly. its pulling at the waist and bust. i was thinking she might be pregnant because it looks as though its a size too small but the logic of her not getting pregnant before a major tour makes sense.

  70. Bazaar mag has an article dated 8/30/18 showing the Duchess of Cambridge wearing numerous dresses above the knee. So the Duchess of Sussex isn’t “pushing the envelope” nor “making her own fashion rules”.

  71. We wore stockings, or nylons, as we called them in high school because girls had to wear dresses or skirts. I wore pantyhose and a skirt suit almost every day of my working life. I almost never wear pantyhose nowadays in summer. I think going stockingless in a skirt looks better with a tan, but nobody seems to care anymore. I love the freedom! I've seen photos of princesses all over Europe, some of them crown princesses, and even Kate with bare legs and dresses. Mind you, they all seem to sport beautiful tans. Is it only the British who seem to find not wearing hose such a dreadful faux pas and beat poor Meghan with it?

Even if a tuxedo is not my favourite kind of dress, I like the way Meghan wears it. And above all the fact that she always wears different styles and models. She's always surprising and that's positive for me. As for her legs and bare legs I don' t see any problem in it. She looks happy, relaxed and at her ease. Her wedding gown is a vision!

  74. Meghan's skin is glowing and her face seems to be fuller. Here is my prediction: she is entering her second month of pregnancy and will be due in March or April.

  75. I love this outfit I think its one of her best outfits in a while. Meghan looks gorgeous, modern, and so sexy. Also I think people need to stop expecting Meghan to dress like Catherine, both ladies are beautiful in their own way. Yeah her legs are thin but they look fantastic to me and I wish I have legs like that. Duchess Meghan slays.

    1. I might not have read "all" the comments, but I do not think anyone in this thread has suggested Meghan dress like Kate. But if they have then I agree, everyone should dress for themselves. It is a cute outfit and she looks cute in it. I commented above about Meghan being a lovely woman but pretty standard in her clothing tastes. Lovely clothes but actually fairly conservative and pretty on trend...but not fashion forward. She is a lovely woman and has nice taste and seems to be working hard at her job.

  76. In a similar vein: I have been surprised that Meghan carries purses (and there’s also the black leather Givenchy belt) with obvious logos. I would have thought that would be a royal no-no.

Personally, I don’t wear logos, because I think they’re “tacky.” If someone wants me to wear a logo, they should be paying ME to advertise for them.

Meghan and Harry are stars even in Italy, wherethey noticed she had publicly called Harry "my love" .... how lovely !!!! she looks glowing and so blooming (as we say for a flower) ... do we have to start waiting for an announcement ??? and if so, could she really travel so far in October ? anyway, I always feel very happy seeing Harry's incredible smile and bright eyes, and Meghan's gentle hand contacts , very motherly sometimes !

  80. Meghan and Harry are just a delight - seeing them together, exuding happiness in each other’s company, makes me happy too! (So, thank you again, Charlotte, for sharing them with us in such a safe place.) I look at their faces first, so perhaps I’m not really into what Meghan wears that much, although it IS fun to see what she comes up with! :) On another note, with regard to them starting a family, I’ve wondered every so often whether they might decide to adopt a child (or children) at some point. Would there be any reason why there could be opposition to them doing so from the Royal Family or the government?

    ReplyDelete

    1. As I understand it, they can adopt, as any other British person. But that child would not be in the line of succession to the throne and if a son, he would not be able to inherit the Duke of Sussex title.

      Delete
    2. Soft - not quite sure where you get your information, but if a legal adoption were to occur, the child would be in the line of succession and also would inherit the Dukedom; you can check with the barristers of the royal court.

    3. Harry’s dukedom is created ‘heirs male of the body’. Adopted children do not qualify for titles. They can inherit any other property, money, etc.
There is actually a court case in the UK now, where a couple is trying to have the title passed to an adopted child.
