Glamorous Meghan in LBD For Summer Garden Party!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex concluded day one of their official visit to Dublin at a glamorous summer garden party at the British Ambassador's Residence.

The Duchess made a stylish arrival.

It's been a packed day for the newlyweds. This morning, they joined Her Majesty and members of the royal family for RAF Centenary events in London including a service at Westminster Abbey, a magnificent flypast and a reception with RAF personnel. From there, they flew to Dublin where they met with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and discussed a number of topics.

It was a beautiful evening for a garden party.

The Duke and Duchess were joined by 300 guests.

The couple met people from across Ireland's political, arts, sports, military and social enterprise sectors.

The Duchess met Irish writer, academic and broadcaster Sinead Burke. After the meeting Sinead tweeted "Oh my goodness. I had the great privilege and pleasure of speaking with Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Sussex this evening about the importance and power of fashion and the opportunities we’ve both been afforded by One Young World." Meghan was a counsellor with One Young World for several years. The  UK-based charity gathers together the brightest young leaders from around the world, empowering them to make lasting connections to create positive change.

The connections don't end there. Below, Sinead pictured with former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson.

Mary Robinson is a committed One Young World counsellor. Meghan appeared in a piece for Vanity Fair with the inspiring advocate following a summit in Ottawa in 2016.

The Duchess met Senator Catherine Noone, who tweeted afterwards: "The Duchess & I had a chat about the recent referendum result - she watched with interest & was pleased to see the result." Ireland recently voted by a large majority to repeal a part of the constitution that banned abortions.

It was particularly interesting to read about the background of guests in attendance. The couple met cervical cancer campaigner Vicky Phelan. She was shocked when she received an invitation, telling The Journal website: "I thought I was dreaming to be honest. I said surely they got that wrong. But I met the Deputy Ambassador who said 'no absolutely not. We really wanted to have you here'. I said 'wow'. It's great. Absolutely fantastic."

Vicky's story is a heartbreaking one. More from the Irish Times:

'Ms Phelan settled a High Court action against a US lab in April after her cancer was missed in a smear test three years before she was diagnosed with the disease. The test was taken as part of the CervicalCheck programme.
The missed smear test was discovered in 2014, after her cancer diagnosis, but she was not told about it until 2017.
A follow-up HSE investigation found that 209 women who were diagnosed with cervical cancer were not told about subsequent audits showing past smear tests through CervicalCheck had missed their cancers.
Despite being told she only had months to live, a new drug treatment she has been undergoing appears to be working and her tumours have shrunk significantly.'

When Meghan met Vicky she told her she has been following her story and encouraged her to keep going. More from the Independent:

"Meghan said she knew who I was and that she had been following my story. I thought 'Oh my god that is amazing'. That was a bonus.
"I knew people knew my story elsewhere but you don't think the Royals watch anything like this.... I was amazed I was gobsmacked. I just said 'thank you' - I couldn't believe she knew who I was to be honest. She just said you're doing great work. Keep doing it.'

Prince Harry gave an incredibly warm speech, during which he said: "Standing here with you on this beautiful evening, it is easy to see why Ireland has such a special place in the hearts of my family and indeed, all those who come here. We’re so pleased to be here, for our first official international visit together as a married couple, and we hope it will be the first of many."

Harry's full speech:

'Thank you for the warm welcome we’ve received since being in this beautiful country. Meghan and I are delighted to be here in Dublin and in the beautiful gardens of Glencairn.
And to the Tánaiste, a special thank you. As some of you may know, he showed my father around his home city of Cork just a couple of weeks ago, so we’re very grateful to you for joining us here this evening as well. My father was telling us last week how much he had enjoyed his recent visit; but said that each of his visits, over the years, holds a special place in his memory. My grandmother, The Queen, also spoke of her own visit in 2011 and the fantastic welcome that she too received.
Standing here with you on this beautiful evening, it is easy to see why Ireland has such a special place in the hearts of my family and indeed, all those who come here. We’re so pleased to be here, for our first official international visit together as a married couple, and we hope it will be the first of many!
As each other’s closest neighbours, the UK and Ireland’s relationship is unique; our shared history is long and complex. There have of course been challenging, and at times tragic, periods of that relationship.
Tomorrow we hope to have the opportunity to reflect on some of those difficult passages in our history when we visit Croke Park and the Famine Memorial. On this visit we will also celebrate just how much unites us. This is a very special relationship between two proud, sovereign countries. We share common values; culture, business links, family ties, and possibly a similar sense of humour. Our relationship is of course informed by our history, but it is also one which is now dynamic and forward looking.
This evening we are extremely fortunate to be joined by many of those who are shaping the future of Ireland. You embody the energy which characterises this amazing country and are leaders in your respective fields: social entrepreneurs harnessing technology to design creative solutions to some of society’s most pressing problems; world renowned athletes; award winning actors; and men and women of the defence force who are marking 60 years of service to global peacekeeping missions.
I have the greatest confidence that the friendship, collaboration and mutual understanding that our two countries have built up over the years will endure and it will grow.
I will finish by drawing on the words of President Higgins during his extraordinarily successful visit to the UK in 2014, which we still remember with admiration. He quoted the traditional Irish saying: ‘Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine’ - “we live in each other’s shadows” - we shield each other, and rely on each other for shelter. That sentiment is as apt now as it was then, as we draw strength from one another as neighbours, partners, and above all friends.
I would like to toast The President of Ireland and the people of Ireland.
Sláinte!

Time for a toast.

The Duchess was the epitome of understated glamour in a bespoke, sleeveless, Emilia Wickstead dress with a square neckline and pocket detail. I thought it another stunning choice - she's been on a roll in terms of her sartorial choices. We haven't seen Meghan at many evening events yet, so it was a treat to see one on the Dublin itinerary.

The news Emilia Wickstead was the designer of the dress came as quite a shock to many of us and there was a collective gasp on Twitter when the news came in. If you missed the post-wedding day dress debacle, here's a refresher from Rebecca English:

'The Duchess of Sussex turned on the glamour last night in a black dress by Emilia Wickstead who claimed her wedding gown was ‘identical’ to one of her own creations, creating a huge social media backlash.
The New Zealander Emilia Wickstead, commented that Meghan’s Givenchy gown was very similar to a £7,000 dress in her own collection. She also claimed Meghan's dress did not fit properly, and said her hairstyle should have been neater.
She later released a statement, saying: 'Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Sussex looked absolutely beautiful on her wedding day and I have the utmost admiration and respect for her.  I do not think that her wedding dress was a copy of any of our designs. I have the greatest respect for Clare Waight Keller and the House of Givenchy — a huge source of inspiration to me.'

Meghan wore her Aquazzura Deneuve Pumps tonight. Made in Italy, the stiletto heels are described as "A pert bow perched at the back ties together the chic detailing of a pointy-toe pump featuring side cutouts and a super slim stiletto." They retail for $750 at Nordstrom.

The Duchess carried her Givenchy Black Satin Clutch.

Meghan accessorised with the Birks Muse Citrine and Diamond Drop earrings.

A closer look at the earrings.

What do you think of day one?

  1. My goodness. Three in a row! She's looked lovely today, she read her briefing notes, and I want her handbags! I want her handbags badly. And if she threw in her dresses, that would be my impetus to lose the weight I want to lose so I can wear them!

    4. You said it. Major handbag envy. My take on the day is Meghan’s style stands out much like Diana’s did. Groundbreaking and fresh. Super sophisticated. She’s kind and well prepared and a great addition to the Firm.

    6. Hello Beccas! I am working on the arms. I have some definition but not nearly as much as it would take to wear that dress well!

The shoes tonight. I love them. I even like the dress, and she's a very forgiving person to wear something by Wickstead. It would be a cold day in hell before I'd wear anything of hers!

  3. I love, Love, LOVED her arrival outfit, the shoes, accessories, hair, everything about the arrival outfit. Loved it all. This dress is fine but I wish for a summer garden party it was something other than black. Maybe something that evokes the summer itself? Something light, maybe with a hint of floral motif. Anything but black.

  4. Yay, her hair is down in curls again! She is 3 for 3 today in my book! A LBD is a perfect choice -- it's always going to be chic no matter the occasion and is a safe bet for a garden party. I love that she brought back her ankle-bow-strap heels!

She must be exhausted after traveling and that many outfit changes. What a schedule, but I'm glad to see her sticking to her promise. I hope Harry & Meghan keep it up!

But the biggest surprise is the Emilia Wickstead dress, not in a million years I would have thought she is gonna wear one. Man, she is generous. Very generous and forgiving.

    4. Very forgiving. Bluhares are not so forgiving. They hold onto grudges and that dress would have been burnt to a cinder if I already owned it!

McCain, emilia wickstead made some very unfortunate comments about meghans wedding gown which read as very sour grapes at not being chosen to design it.

    5. She might have already owned it but no one forced her to wear it! I'd say "forgiving" fits.

I think she´s someone with the very rare gift of taking things not too personally... Maybe they´ve cleared the air behind the scenes & if EW is not going to do this business-suicidal-thing again, she is forgiven. Which shows you the kind of person Meghan is. Not easy - and hopefully rewarded by an EW who keeps her pettiness to herself in future....

Her clothes since the wedding have been to die for, except the pink thing at trouping, but the christening dress, the black RAF dress OMG stunning, and these two dresses. I just can’t.

And I love all the black lol. Everyone can be happy I’m not a Royal lol. Everything would be black, navy, white or gray lol. With the rare red or other color but I mean rare haha! I personally don’t think anything looks as sophisticated as black.

    I just adore her style.

    1. I love the black, too. Don't dislike the other colours; however, black has that je ne sais quoi every time. Like you, Jennifer, it's my go-to colour. Easy to 'mix and match' and accessorize. Always elegant and effortless.

One year I decided I really ought to brighten it up a bit for spring/summer and went shopping. Everything I bought was gray! Pearly, soft gray. You know what they say about leopards. Hahaha!

    2. I totally agree. Meghan is my fashion dream too. I love Kate’s clothes, but I don’t relate to them or picture myself wearing them - they’re far too formal and conservative for real life. On the other hand, Meghan’s choices seem more accessible to me.

  14. At first I thought this was a bit too cocktail party-ish for a garden party then I saw how the others were dressed and it does seem like a kind of formal suit-and-tie affair for the men and so the LDB works. Like her hair parted on the side and her shoes. She's had a very busy day with three changes of clothes and I'm sure a very packed schedule. I was also surprised she wore Emilia Wickstead after that wedding dress drama but this might have been a dress she bought before she was married.

She is absolute perfection! Grace, dignity and beauty — a rare combination.
Hoping we get to see more bling. She is a woman who knows how to wear the good jewellery, and not let it wear her. Certainly, the dress was fine on its own, a brooch would have looked impressive on this outfit. QE needs to unlock that jewellery closet. Just imagine an American wearing the Crown Jewels — now, *that* will have us all in tears...happy tears. Blessings to Meghan.

    3. Her evening black shoes with the bow in back are cute but way too big for her. I don't know why, but when she wears shoes too big, it just seems to stand out. Her brown ones she wore when she arrived to Ireland, fitted just fine. I know the reason given by others--swelling--but these shoes seemed larger than even the ones she wore at her & Harry's White Garden announcement. Loved the look other than that! Love the side part!

I love her early evening/cocktail looks. It is a difficult one to get right, but Meghan finds that perfect balance between looking glamorous but not over dressed.

The fact that she is wearing Wickstead is just proof in my eyes that often people are more offended on behalf of somebody than the person who was ‘wronged’ themselves.
I have a feeling Wickstead’s comments barely registered as a blip on Meghan’s radar.

    1. Maybe she doesn't read "opinions" in reviews etc. She mentioned in the interview after the engagement. You would definitely have to commend her if she was simply living her best life. As we all should IMHO.

    2. I wholeheartedly agree with this comment! I don’t think Meghan even thought about it.

  20. The Duchess has been stunning all day! Hope she will chose to wear some Irish labels--that breeds such goodwill. Maybe the choice of the Wickstead is itself a message about forgiveness and forward-thinking (much like the Brexit message and relationship with Ireland, in general). It will be very hard for her to do the NZ tour without a nod to this designer.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the tweet from the Senator about Meghan's comments on the referendum. Typically, the BRF does not comment on politics...this is going to be a challenge for our intelligent, opinionated, and informed Duchess, and I chose these adjectives with the upmost respect, reflecting the most positive connotations associated with each.

I don't say it enough, Charlotte, but my sincere thanks for all you do to elevate this forum and inform us of so much more than the fashion itself. 4. I agree with everything you said, Ms. Cuppa! We usually don't hear from people who have spoken to the royals in a social situation. However, this is a way that Meghan's words or opinions can get out. She may not speak openly about them, but we all know she has them & that may be a dicey thing as she travels the world. Even tho they may not be UK political opinions, I don't think it will go down especially well, if she continues to comment on a given country's political issues as they are traveling in it...... I support her wholeheartedly but that was a red flag for me & it will be interesting to see how the foreign office deals with it. If she continues to express her opinions to people when she is visiting, then we'll know it's all ok. Otherwise she may find she just is in a position to listen & be (I don't know?) supportive, in conversations??? I have no clue, but I just wonder how her educated opinions will go down back home? Especially when she and Harry are traveling as representatives of The Monarch! ?

    5. I though the comment about the referendum was out of place. Those who lost the vote are as Irish as those who won. The BRF shouldn't take sides.

  21. I am impressed by Meghan's gravitas! She shows command of the subject matters (ie, Ireland's referendum on abortion and Ms. Phelan's fight against the US lab that missed her cervical cancer diagnosis, etc.) confronting women in Ireland and I daresay in the world. Either she is well briefed or well read, and I would like to believe the latter. This choice of attire and the fact that she weighed in on a political issue shows that she is more than Harry's wife. This woman can more than hold her own! As an African American, Meghan makes me proud.

What a difference it makes to her silhouette when she wears necklines that suit her figure. I felt the midnight blue Dior dress, while beautiful, did not flatter her at all. It was as though the dress was wearing her.

  24. Meghan looks and behaves in a way that is lovely and gracious. She indeed does keep abreast of things—so interesting that she knew about Vicky Phelan’s situation as I don’t think it has been that well publicized outside of Ireland? I learn so much from your blogs Charlotte!

I thought Harry’s speech was carefully weighted with the part about the English/Irish relationship. Meghan’s comment to Senator Noone about the referendum could have been a bit dicey but Ireland is its own country so I think Meghan is on safe and not “political” ground. Besides it isn’t an issue in the UK.

Forgive me, I am ruminating as I will be back in Ireland in a few weeks for a holiday and it is lovely to see M & H in my “other” home. I hope they have a wonderful time and enjoy Irish hospitality. Harry will be right at home in the land of gingers.

Remember they will have been very well briefed on Irish issues as well as being given short biographies of those they will meet at official functions. They do this before all overseas visits. Their political adviser will have warned them about not expressing any views that are not in line with British Government policies. Prince Harry's speech will have been written for him to read out. However it does sound as if he may have added some personal comments about his father's visit to Ireland.

  27. I just can't find the words; she is so pretty in this dress! I love the fit; she looks gorgeous from every angle. There are lots of ways she could have changed it, like wearing those wedding reception diamond earrings or the diamond bracelet from the wedding, but she would not have been as approachable. I'm still looking forward to seeing her wear turquoise, either jewelry or as a dress color, but these earrings are wonderful. Harry knows how lucky he is. He smiles like I've not seen before. It's a treat that she is also an intelligent and nice person.

Just a few months ago we were wondering "if" they would become engaged, and now we have so much to enjoy. Wonder if she really drank the wine? (I'm on baby watch.)

  28. I think she went safe wearing black this evening. I am getting to be the age that I don't remember everything well, but I know that in Ireland there are several colors that have political associations. They both look good.

  29. I am surprised that she would comment on political matters. Being American, where politics seem to have taken over our lives, I'm wondering if it will be difficult for Meghan to leave her opinions behind. I think this might be something we will see her struggle with in the future; trying to find a balance between her former life and the non-political stance of the BRF.

    1. I was surprised as well. Now with the Senator's clarification that it was "a benign chat", the situation is even more murky. It raises questions about what she is actually permitted to say, what others infer from the conversation, and what the media conveys. I'm guessing these 3 factors are rarely aligned. :) https://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/celebs/a22115435/meghan-markle-ireland-abortion-referendum/

  30. Just a super-quick note, as a proud Ottawan, the picture of Meghan and Mary Robinson, is taken in Gatineau, Quebec, across the Ottawa River from Ottawa (Canada's capital city). You can see Parliament Hill and the Peace Tower in the background.

The summit may well have been in Toronto, but this photo was taken in the National Capital (just in case any of you are inspired to visit!)

I've never commented on the blog before (which I greatly enjoy). Noticed the photo last night and thought the same thing - that picture is taken from the Museum of History in Gatineau. Thanks for pointing this out Tudor.

  31. This is the only Wickstead dress I've really liked. Surprised to see Meghan wearing it though considering her comments about Meghan's wedding dress.

  32. Meghan looks spectacular. TLBD is just perfect, so chic and sophisticated. They are a wonderful couple, and I loved her stopping to greet the little boy on the way in. I loved her green arrival ensemble too.

  33. I love this dress but why so many belt grommets? They make the dress look imbalanced as there are 6 of them on her left side. Seems odd to me.

  34. Ih i love the dress i did expect he will wear emillia wickstead considering the fact controversy hmm meghan looks so glam and posh in three event

  35. Perfect event for these two. Stepping out in style!!! Meghan's dress is just beautiful, the earrings gorgeous and the shoes are potentially my favourite shoes of all times, not that I could walk very far in them!
Meghan's hair looks so much better recently, she seems to have found hairstyles that suit public events really well. I do hope that she keeps that "messy bun" for her days off though, it does suit her! I find that my hair do's can look quite different based on where I am in the world, it is affected by the humidity in the air and the quality of the water amongst other things. It takes a bit of time getting used to. The water in the UK is usually really good, and gives you a really light feeling, so maybe it can be a bit harder to control those fly away locks!!
I would love love love to meet Catriona Balfe, Outlander is one of my favourite shows. And the other Irish actors, how interesting.
I love the photo where Harry looks lovingly at his wife. They can face the world together now. They are a beautiful couple.

  36. Beauty, elegance and something... am so overwhelmed, she looks fabulous!!!!

  37. OMG. I love this dress, and her look. She is so striking. Her taste in clothes is impeccable. The bow shoes are just perfect with this dress. They both look like they so enjoy these events. I just love them both!

  38. I'm happy to see the duchess coming in to her own.
She is looking much less nervous and unsure every time we see her.

Her outfits are getting better and better too. There is usually one thing that makes them off for me, but these last two! Just wonderful!

I loved the green as she and Prince Harry arrived in Ireland. Sophisticated and professional, and paying homage to their host country. Lovely.

As others have commented, her handbags are to die for. I don't care about clutches too much, but her handbags...swoon!

I don't understand why she (and Catherine) wear suede pumps in the summer. Maybe because I'm from south Texas and it is ridiculously hot here, but I think they would be uncomfortable.

I do love the black pumps with the little bow. Elegant with a touch of whimsy.

The LBD at the garden party was very pretty. It's nice to see her in a silhouette other than a bateau neckline, although it does suit her.
I thought the black was fine, but I'm one of those who wears black to parties. The cut of the dress was festive for the event.

Loved the cuisine citrine earrings too. The little bit of color jazzed up her ensemble more than pearls or diamonds would have done.

I did not care for her look this morning. The fit and flair cut was too casual for the RAF event. It was a little too "party" for my tastes. Like I said, it's usually one thing that throws off her outfit.
She's getting the hat thing down though, her last few have been gorgeous.

  39. Wow, Meghan looks fantastic here. Truly stunning. This dress looks wonderful on her. Honestly, I think this is my favorite Meghan outfit to date. The dress fits her so well and the neckline with the large straps and no sleeves looks gorgeous.

  40. Just as an FYI: “Meghan appeared in a piece for Vanity Fair with the inspiring advocate following a summit in Toronto in 2016.” This was in Ottawa 😀 Also an awesome glamorous day! Can’t wait for more tomorrow! ❤️

  41. Thanks, Charlotte. You deserve an award for keeping us so accurately informed. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are a lovely couple. So far, I’m impressed with their first official international trip together as a married couple.

  42. This is a great LDB. The length, the square neckline and the fact that is is sleeveless. Glad she wore the black shoes here - perfect! And the citrine earrings just really set it off. Loved her "hollywood style locks" reminded me a little of Kim Bassinger.

Given this dress is black, I am absolutely convinced that her dress in the morning was dark navy. Several were calling it black.

Can't wait for the morning. I'm questioning whether or not she's going to wear more than one outfit. I'm sure she'll be at Wimbledon on Thursday - aren't you all crossing your fingers? Go Serena!

  43. I love to hear that Meghan is commenting on a political/social issue affecting Ireland, which is in keeping with her engaged, intelligent, and curious way of life. We need role models who are opinionated independent women. More of this please!

I actually really dislike the belt on this dress in combination with the pockets but the rest of it, especially shoes, is divine so yeah I’m just nitpicking. The rivets on the belt are taking me to goth high school land circa 2002 though. Wish it was a self tie belt in the same material.

What a day for royal fashion! I think it’s the most going on since the day of the wedding and it’s been such a fun escape.

I do love all the irish trip outfits so far. All of them are perfect, but what amazes me more is Meghan's attitude towards people, the way she shows sincere interest and solidarity. That's what makes her so special.

  45. The lady is unstoppable. She is learning by doing from day 1 and as she experiences complex engagements like these and gains confidence (she is generally a confident woman, but this is very new to her - the role, the environment, the mentality, not to mention the hostility she has faced…) she will excel in substance (not just in fashion).

  46. My God she was gorgeous I think this is one of my favorite outfits what glamor what classy grace lol, she and Harry were adorable. The fact that she is interested in the problems of others and the news that surrounds me make me even more admirable bravo Meghan continues like that

  47. This is the best she's ever looked she is utterly gorgeous I adore her hair! Wish she wore it like this on her wedding day!! I adore the dress she looks like a real movie star wow wow wow ! Goals! Thanks Charlotte

  48. Oh and I think meghan wore this dress because she is a classy person and it just shows that wickstead that she is better than her and above that gossip and slander. As a woman of colour meghan is used to jabs and people being racist so she is just riding her head above the mean comments like people complaining she is faking a British accent. Meghan just isn't going to lower herself and dignify that or any of it with a response even from family members she is just too classy I think by saying nothing and looking gorgeous in that dress she put wickstead in her place

  49. I think people should be careful before condemning Emilia Wickstead’s supposed comments on Meghan’s wedding dress.
Nobody knows if she really made those comments. The Press love to stir things up.... it sells!
Meghan looks lovely in this dress.

She so nailed it at this garden party. Love, love love her style. Natural, elegant, but not stuffy or overdone at all. Every detail perfect. I always love Meghan with a side part in her hair. She's rapidly becoming a style icon for me, although I don't have her coloring or her figure, and can't wear black. There's just a natural, zen feel to this lady that we all want, I think. You go, girl!!!

  51. Wowzers! I’m speechless lol That side part is really doing her wonders. Harry’s face when he looks at her says it all 😍

  52. This part of the post really surprised me: "The Duchess met Senator Catherine Noone, who tweeted afterwards: "The Duchess & I had a chat about the recent referendum result - she watched with interest & was pleased to see the result." Ireland recently voted by a large majority to repeal a part of the constitution that banned abortions."

It looks like the tweet was clarified with another tweet from the Senator, and both have since been deleted. ( https://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/celebs/a22115435/meghan-markle-ireland-abortion-referendum/) Given the nonpolitical nature of Meghan's role, this seemed a big statement to make!

  53. Something I noticed immediately that no one else has commented on is how the Duchess knelt down when talking to the brightly dressed woman who's a dwarf. My daughter is also a little person, and she hates being "loomed over," as she puts it. I'm sure this lovely young woman also appreciated the Duchess getting down to her level, and even a bit below her eye level, which is another demonstration of Meghan's thoughtfulness! (By the way, for those who don't know, either dwarf or little person is the preferred term these days. Just avoid the "m" word, midget!)
