Meghan in Chic Jason Wu LBD for Private Invictus Games Foundation Reception

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex concluded day six of their royal visit to Australia with an Invictus Games Foundation garden party at Government House, Sydney.

The private event was embargoed until yesterday. It appears it was very much a chance for Harry and Meghan to meet and thank supporters of the Games Foundation.

Harry and Meghan were greeted by the Governor of New South Wales and his wife Mrs Hurley.

The appearance follows news the Duchess may amend her exhausting schedule over the next couple of days. Due to a tiring late night, Meghan missed a cycling event. She rejoined her husband for a luncheon reception with the Prime Minister and an afternoon of sailing before returning to Admiralty House for a quick change for the garden party.

There's a few seconds of coverage from the reception in the video below from The Today Show.

MP David Elliott shared an overview of the party.

Guests enjoyed musical entertainment.

Government House is the vice-regal residence of the Governor of New South Wales, Australia, located on Conservatorium Road in Sydney alongside the Royal Botanic Gardens, overlooking Sydney Harbour, just south of the Sydney Opera House.

Jason Wu confirmed the Duchess wore the Ruched-Trim Sleeveless Compact Crepe Sheath Dress. It's described as: High crossover neckline with ruched trim, Sleeveless; cut-in shoulders and squared back. The $1,995 is available in most sizes at Bergdorf Goodman.

The designer offered confirmation via Twitter.

It appears Meghan wore her Aquazzura Deneuve pumps in a soft nude pink.

And carried her Jimmy Choo J Box clutch.

In other news, with chat firmly focusing on Baby Sussex, Harry revealed he's hoping for a girl. The Mirror reports:

'Prince Harry has revealed he is hoping for a baby girl when wife Meghan gives birth in the spring.
During a cycling race in Sydney today, a wellwisher called out to the Duke: “Congratulations, I hope it’s a girl” to which Harry laughed and replied: “So do I!”
It is the first time the Prince, 34, has revealed his feelings about the sex of the child he is expecting with the Duchess.'

A look at the Fraser Island schedule for Monday, 22 October. It is thought the Duchess will not attend all events due to the difficult terrain:

  • On, Monday 22nd October, Harry and Meghan will travel to Queensland’s Fraser Island, or K’gari as it is known by the Traditional Owners the Butchulla people, as part of the dedication of the site to the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy (QCC).
  • In pristine rainforest, Their Royal Highnesses will be met upon arrival by the Traditional Owners of K'gari, the Butchulla People and the Premier of Queensland. The Duke and Duchess will take part in a traditional Welcome to Country Smoking Ceremony and unveil a plaque for the dedication of the Forests of K’gari to the QCC. Traditional Owners from Bulburin National Park, the second QCC dedication site in Queensland, will also be present. Fraser Island rainforest is home to the Island’s satinay trees which, known for their hardiness in water, were used to build the London docks in the 1930s.
  • The Duke and Duchess will then visit one of Fraser Island’s iconic lakes to meet with local elders and national park rangers to learn about the Island’s natural beauty, rich history, biodiversity and cultural significance. From here, Their Royal Highnesses will travel to the beach to learn about the history in the Island’s logging trade, as well as its use as a training base for the Australian Z Special Unit during World War II. Their Royal Highnesses will then travel to Kingfisher Bay by boat, where the visit will conclude with a walk along the picturesque Kingfisher Bay Jetty.

This post will be updated should more photos and details emerge.

  1. Oh look..black. Again.

    1. I know, Ella. She looks so beautiful--and she is quite a trooper--but I do wish she'd depart from the blue and black wardrobe. I so enjoyed the white on the first day, and the deep olive was pretty (although at first glance, I thought it was black, too). I, too, wear navy and black when I travel--but my reasons are that they don't show dirt so that I can wear them several times with a couple of different tops--and fit everything into a carry-on bag. I don't think her reasons are quite the same as mine!!

    2. She has worn 3 black and 3 navy dresses in six days. + all the black trousers, shirts or the black and olive dress.

    3. Neutral colours are her style, this was true for her before she met and married Harry. While she will at some point wear a coloured outfit, I don't think it will come anytime soon and I am actually happy she is sticking to who she is and her personal style. Power to her =)

    4. I’ve been trying to come up with why Meghan and Jessica would do this. One thing that occurred to me is that maybe they’ve colour-codded different countries. So we get 4 colours (black, white, navy and olive) in Australia and then a different set of colours in Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand each. We’ll see on Tuesday.

    5. She now has us trained to think that white is a special color. :)

    6. I did the same thing that Sam did - count the number of navy and black dresses. Outside of those, white and olive green (the beach dress appeared to me to have some khaki green). And a beige and navy coat.

I have to say, I like the dresses she's worn so far and the coats as well. And there's variety in the styles she's choosing. I hope we'll see a little bit more color as the tour continues. Royal Blue or something bright green or coral would be lovely.

    7. It's a shame that Meghan doesn't take a leaf out of the Queen's book and wear more colour. Have a look at the photos of Charles and Diana's first Australian tour back in 1983.....Diana was a new mother in her early twenties, first tour and yet, she knew to take bright coloured clothes with her. She stood out amongst the crowd and people could see her. I know that Meghan is still very new to this and perhaps over time she will add more colour to her wardrobe.

  2. Has anyone thought that she maybe having twins? I know she is thin and when you are thin the pregnancy shows much quicker but she is getting fuller much quicker and that's when the thought came into my mind. I am thrilled she is scaling back and taking care of herself and the baby (babies). Wouldn't twins be wonderful!

    1. I don't think it's twins, I think she is further along than people think. I'd put her at 16 weeks, which is when you usually pop. + she's very short-waisted which will make her show sooner than someone like Kate with a very long torso.
I myself am built similarly to Meghan and this is how my body reacted.

    2. I don't think so (although twins would be wonderful!). I also don't think she's filling out all that fast. She must be at least 14 or 15 weeks by now--and she's wearing form-fitting clothes. Plus her beautiful natural posture thrusts her abdominal area forward with her shoulders back.

    3. I agree Amy. I mentioned this in a past post. I think she is easily four months. The information that she passed her 3 month scan does not mean it just occurred. They would have not taken on this outrageously busy tour if she had just been notified of the results. I believe they had all that info in hand long before they stepped on the plain.

    4. @Anonymous - twins would be so amazing! I'd love for twins, but don't really think so for this pregnancy because the press release specifically stated "a baby." I think it would have been more vague if it were multiples. I do agree with Amy though that she is about 16 weeks. I think when the press release said 12-week scan, people took that to mean 12 weeks pregnant, but I think she's further along that that. I'm predicting first week of April for the birth.

    5. Hi all! Twin mum here: I was MASSIVE by 20 weeks, and was definitely showing by 16 weeks, and I'm a lot taller than Meghan and had more room for my babies on board. I don't think she's having twins. I know a lot of fellow twin mums and we were nearly all enormous - and the ones who stayed relatively small still had very pronounced and very round bumps from early on. And speaking from experience as somebody who has lived through the early days of twins, I'm not sure I would wish that on another first-time mum - it was TERRIFYING! Mind you, I'd imagine they would have a bit more hands-on help than my husband and I had... ;-)

On topic: I really like this dress. I can sympathise with those of you who are getting fed up with the parade of very safe wardrobe choices in plain colours, but I still thinks she looks stunning - she's glowing. I'm just so besotted with her and Prince Harry, and I really want to add my voice to those of you commending Charlotte for her awesome coverage of this tour. It is so interesting and enjoyable to read!

  3. Thanks Charlotte for your fantastic coverage.

Meghan looks stunning in this LBD!! I do wish we could have gotten a better look at it but something is better than nothing :)

Regarding the trip to Fiji, I had read that Meghan might not attend some of the events there due to the presence of mosquitoes and the possibility of Zika, especially in the forested areas. I read this earlier in the week before the exhaustion set in, so I don't think she was planning on attending those events regardless. I'm glad that she'll still be making the trip and attending an event in a more urban area. Harry must be loving having his best friend with him on this trip as I imagine these tours can get rather lonely for the principal, having no one to share special moments with and reminisce about afterwards.

  4. Truly perfect cocktail reception dress. If Meghan is exhausted as she has every right to be she is not exhibiting signs. It appears that we have a slight appearance from Baby Sussex looking at Meghan in profile. Another wonderful event.

    2. It will be straight up insanity, lol. I'm hoping for a girl too and her belly shape looks more like a girl, IMO.

My prediction is Princess Alice of Sussex, born April 4, 2019 (LPs will be filed so the baby will be born an HRH princess/prince).

    3. I like the name but I don’t expect the LP - so maybe she’ll just be Miss Alice Sussex? I think it’s likely that Harry will want to go down the path Princess Anne took with her children, in the hopes of a comparatively normal upbringing.

    4. William was unhappy to be referred to as a Duke upon his marriage. I don't know how Harry feels about that. I doubt he will completley give up royal titiles. His children will be Lord and Lady unless he specifically rejects royal titles as his Aunt Anne did; or unless the Queen intervenes as she did with Charlotte and Louis. The law only gives the heir's eldest child an automatic prince or princess, as I read it. Think Lady Louise Windsor as the default.

  6. Well ... it's a very pretty LBD even though it doesn;t look all that different from the other LBD's and navy dresses she has. I wonder if it's because she's showing much earlier than she expected and the black and navy kind of hides the baby bump? Also black and navy dresses are easier to maintain on tours. I might be wrong but with the hectic schedule Harry and Meghan are maintaining Meghan might not have a lot of time to "prep" before appearances. Her tours are very different from W&K tours which maintain a lighter schedule.

    1. Ivy Lin, Why would Meghan be trying to hide the baby bump? If the pregnancy announcement hadn't been made, perhaps trying to disguise things a bit longer would be the reason. But the world knows that Meghan is pregnant and the logical progression is that her appearance and figure will change. As for black and navy being easier to maintain during travel, that would apply to most of us. But Meghan has staff and assistants with her. It is doubtful that Meghan is doing laundry in a hotel's bathroom sink, like many of us have to do when travelling. There would be no limit to how many suitcases and changes of clothing she could bring. When other Royals go on tour, they seem to be able to manage a variety of colours and styles. As far as fashion goes, this tour is boring. That said, I adore Meghan's personality and kindness. In the end, that is more important than her clothes.

  8. Maybe Meghan has only one black dress and she makes adjustments/additions/corrections for each use? I'm satisfied watching her beautiful rings change.

  10. While I enjoy looking at fashions and styles, I am very happy that Meghan has firmly and consistently put it in the background of who she is and what she does.

  11. All the research I’ve done points to the fact that The Duchess will not take part in any of the events.

  12. I agree with you, Ivy Lin. Although the Duchess of Sussex prefers neural colors, on this type of tour with every day two to three engagements, the color black is probably low maintenance and also makes one look slimmer. With the white, I could more easily see the baby bump; not so much in the black at this stage, anyway. Just a guess. Either way, she is a lovely lady. Thanks, Charlotte.

  13. Like me, Meghan is short waisted. That baby is growing, but it’s giving her a thickening front instead of a nice round bump, just what I always experienced. And later on, some of my tall kids did not quite fit in there. But the second trimster was good, and I hope Meghan is enjoying it.

  14. Exactly. Thanks, Patricia. Well said.

  15. You know, Laura, with women who are pregnant for the FIRST time there is a MORE self-conscious awareness of body changing. For the Duchess of Sussex, with her small frame, her body changing is probably a big adjustment. Of course, I could be wrong. I’ve never met her😊. Thanks, Charlotte.

  16. oh god i love the Jason Wu hmm navy white and black are not my problem hmm its classic look but in case see want try new color it would be fun too

  17. I really love this dress. Yes, another black dress, but I love the neckline and the ruffles.

  18. More women look even more beautiful pregnant and Meghan is no exception! Lovely dress!

  19. Nice dress, but I think she should start dressing with different shapes from her usual...her body is changing and this sheaths are not very flattering for her figure.
