Meghan Invests In Female Led Santa Barbara Start Up Clevr Blends

It was confirmed today the Duchess of Sussex has invested in a female-founded startup based in the Sussexes' home of Santa Barbara. Meghan reached out to the team behind super latte brand Clevr Blends after trying the company's oat milk latte. The Duchess told Fortune: "This investment is in support of a passionate female entrepreneur who prioritizes building community alongside her business. I’m proud to invest in Hannah’s commitment to sourcing ethical ingredients and creating a product that I personally love and has a holistic approach to wellness. I believe in her and I believe in her company."

Fortune reports:

'Wellness has long been an interest of Meghan's; she often wrote about the wellness space when she ran a now-shuttered lifestyle blog called The Tig. Meghan reached out to the Clevr team after trying the company's oat-milk latte product, which debuted through a Santa Barbara, California pop-up coffee shop in 2017. The Southern California-based business is headquartered near Montecito, California, where Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, moved earlier this year.

A representative for the duchess declined to disclose the size of her investment, which wasn't part of any kind of larger funding round. The brand, which has six staff members, has until now been self-funded. Clevr plans to use the investment to scale its business, which currently sells four different kinds of instant lattes retailing for $28, as well as a milk frother and travel mug. The brand has also committed donating 1% of revenue to organizations fighting for food justice in the U.S., money that is currently going to Santa Barbara's El Centro SB, a mutual aid and community organization.'

Fortune also revealed that -- astoundingly -- female-founded companies received only 2.7% venture capital funding in 2019.

An interesting piece from Forbes on the topic:

"Investing in startups with at least one female founder makes economic sense," observed Pam Kostka, CEO at All Raise. All Raise's mission is to accelerate the success of female founders and funders. "We have better outcomes when the funders and founders are reflective of the markets they serve." Companies with a female founder performed 63% better than investments with all-male founding teams. Businesses founded by women deliver twice as much per dollar invested than those founded by men. Despite being less likely to raise follow-on funding, founder teams with women are more likely to exit and have a higher internal rate of return (IRR) — 112% versus 48%.

Gender diversity delivered higher returns and a lower risk of failure than all-male private equity buyout teams. Companies with women on their founding teams provide faster routes to exit and the number of exits for these companies is growing at a quicker rate than for companies with only male founders."

Clevr Brands CEO Hannah Mendoza said, "Entrepreneurs need funding, but they also need advisers who care deeply about what they are building. "I’m grateful to have found both in the Duchess of Sussex. Her passion for what we're creating is palpable, and I couldn't imagine a more aligned partnership. We're excited for the road ahead."

Clevr Brands got another injection of star power last night when Oprah shared a video of a gift basket of goods sent to her by "her neighbor M". She described the lattes as her "new drink of choice for morning and night". Of course, Oprah and Harry are working together on a mental health series we'll be hearing more about in the coming months. I think a show of support like this from Oprah is indicative of the close bond she shares with the Sussexes.

The brand's ethos is a great fit for Meghan.

The business offers a limited number of products as it's in its infancy, but I expect that to change after today. Products on offer include Matcha, Chai, Golden and Coffee lattes. The Coffee is described as, "All energy, no jitters. Organic Arabica coffee from a co-operative in Colombia that funds sustainability programs in its communities." Click here to visit the website.

It's an incredibly exciting time for Hannah and the Clevr Blends team. Being in the UK and witnessing the continuing coverage of the couple over here, I wanted to note the stark difference in the US. They are being covered thus far by reputable outlets such as FortuneNew York Times and CNN on the merit of their efforts -- without a toxic atmosphere and the relentless smear campaign we've all watched with great disappointment,. As Meghan herself said last year, she never expected life within the Royal family to be easy but she thought it would be fair. They are now getting a fair shot in their new home and that must be a source of enormous relief to both of them.

As I was about to hit publish, Harper's Bazaar revealed Meghan and Harry were the most tweeted about royals this year -- followed by the Queen and Princess Diana. A key focus for them next year will be harnessing the enormous global interest in them and making their own impact in the social media sphere while striving to create kinder online communities. As they both know, the intensity of this interest can lend itself to a 'free for all' situation whereby trolls share vitriolic abuse, often without as much as a suspension of their accounts. It's going to be fascinating to see the Sussexes' work in this space.

One of the things I've long admired about Meghan is how she scopes out these niche brands/companies to support...and honestly, I'd much rather take her word for good products/companies than many influencers out there.

I was definitely surprised to see Oprah mention her!

The coverage definitely has been different here in the States...pretty much all I've seen, except for Page Six (not worth a read, regardless) and a few other outlets here and there cover the Sussexes work. Meghan seemed tense to me in that last video, but I do imagine they're feeling more relaxed in their new life.

    1. I am afraid that the sort of destructive criticism that Meghan and Harry got in UK is pretty well universal throughout the world, particularly if anyone is well known. In New Zealand we call it the "Tall Poppy syndrome". Your US politicians, especially the women are not exempt from this and just this evening on the TV News I heard criticism of those Americans who advocate for "woke" causes. I fully expect that once the Sussex duo start to produce documentaries, they will be the targets for increased criticism from those who disagree with their opinions. I do hope this will not discourage them. We need people to speak up on these issues. That is what democracy is all about.

Oh yes, I’m well aware of the trash spewed by many in the States, as well, especially towards women like AOC, RBG, etc. I simply meant there hasn’t been the same pointed vitriol towards Meghan, thus far, and many articles have highlighted her (and Harry’s) work.

  2. Yes, it will be very interesting to follow Harry and Meghan and to see how they evolve thir public and humanitarian work in this new context. It really makes clear how restricted and Meghan was as a member of the royal family. It really dimmed her light and sapped her energy. Besides her humanitarian work, it will be interesting to watch any developments on the business side apart from her work with Harry as a producer. I believe she was a smart business woman before her marriage, judging by the way she handled her career once it was established with her Suits role. The two of them definitely have a lot of balls in the air, and it looks like they have a first rate staff to work with them.

    1. Yes! 'Duchess of Solutions' I couldn't agree more!
No matter how much hate she received (and still receiving) form the UK media/trolls she keeps rolling with the punches and rising!

  4. Lovely and fitting choice for Meghan. I found your write-up with its description of the difference in US coverage of the Sussexes interesting and, while obvious, still so sad. May there be many happy days ahead for this family, and may the family in the UK come to a sense of happiness for a mature Harry in full bloom.

    1. Would love to buy them myself, but at $28.00 a pop, don't think so. This is my only downside to this endeavor, it's clearly a niche market and certainly not within the realm of affordability to the masses.

    2. I cannot afford all of them at once either, but I will order just one to treat myself on Christmas instead of a regular gift. I try to treat myself to a specialty coffee every year since my maternal grandmother passed just a couple of years ago. She used to love gourmet coffees; it brings good memories for me because it reminds me of her.

    3. It looks like the $28 is for 14 servings, so reasonable if you can afford it and not for many people. I like the sound of the Chai and am talking myself into buying it! I love this idea -- royal Shark Tank!

  8. Cant even begin to imagine how it must feel for them to be in the US without the relentless hate campaign and stalker, vindictive “journalism”.
It is not enough to survive as Meghan said. They are now in the thrive phase πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌ

  9. Charlotte, I appreciate so much your brilliant research into everything Meghan and Harry involve themselves in, and the education you provide to your readers. This is just the kind of thing Meghan loves to support.

  10. Hi Charlotte. Great work as usual. Yes we noticed the difference reporting. So much to like here. Ohanian is the startup guru lately, and Serena has been doing the same the last few years. Oprah has been doing this mental health documentary with Harry for years now, we are getting impatient LOL. Lot's happening especially since its reported this is one of the startups revealed, so they are likely more. Great moves.

  11. Because of Meghan's partnership with this company I just bought the starter kit with matcha and golden milk :) I am so excited to see her partner with and invest in many more wonderful companies in the future!!

It's so refreshing to see the difference in the reporting here is the states compared to the UK. Of course the usual suspects are once again calling for the queen to remove Meghan's and Harry's titles or honorifics because of this investment. They do seem to conveniently forget about Charles' Duchy Originals or Princess Michael's books or Andrew's cut from the pitch@palace. Anyhow I'm thrilled for this couple, all of these great things happening for them just remind me that hard work, compassion and love truly do win in the end.

  12. Wow! Great news! Women supporting women! That's how it should be. Instead of crucifying/trolling because of an outfit worn or the so called "belly hugging" while pregnant.

Thanks for reporting this Charlotte. So nice to hear women supporting women! :)
