The Duchess made a stylish arrival.
It's another royal milestone for Meghan who attended her first Trooping the Colour, spent a day of engagements with Her Majesty, and accompanied Harry to the wedding of Diana's niece Celia McCorquodale all in the past two weeks. The Queen simply adores Royal Ascot, owing to her great love of horses since childhood, and looks forward to it immensely every year. It is said she loves to see as many members of the family as possible in attendance every year. I suspect during Her Majesty's overnight train journey to Chester with Meghan last week, conversation may have turned to Ascot on more than one occasion. It's a wonderful opportunity for the Duchess to experience another royal tradition which will become a regular fixture on her summer schedule.
Harry and Meghan travelled in the royal carriage procession.
They were joined by the Earl and Countess of Wessex.
There's a sweet moment in the video below - Sophie gets something in her eye and Meghan quickly puts her hand on her shoulder.

Her Majesty arriving with Princess Anne. It's a very exciting time for the family with the delightful news Zara Tindall gave birth to a baby girl yesterday.
More from Royal Ascot: "The Royal Meeting’s spectacular heritage, unlike any other, has made the event anticipated and revered the world over. From the arrival of the Royal Procession at 2pm sharp to the communal singing around the Bandstand, with six top-class races between, each of the five days is unforgettable."

The Duchess assisted the Queen's racing advisor, John Warren when his binoculars slipped off his shoulder. John's granddaughter Zalie Warren is Harry's goddaughter, the two-year-old was a bridesmaid at the Royal wedding.
It's always a treat to see photos of the royals together during Ascot.

A lovely shot of the newlyweds.
Royal Ascot is the centrepiece of Ascot's year and dates back to 1711 when it was founded by Queen Anne.
Over 300,000 people make the annual visit to Berkshire during Royal Ascot week, making this Europe’s best-attended race meeting.
Day One of Royal Ascot is widely acknowledged to be amongst the best racing days anywhere in the world with three Group One races; the Queen Anne Stakes, the King’s Stand Stakes and the St James’s Palace Stakes
Below, Her Majesty The Queen watches on as her horse Choirboy wins the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot, 17th June 1953.
Indeed, sculptures on the racecourse included none other than The Queen herself.
There are three enclosures attended by guests on Royal Ascot week. The Royal Enclosure is the most prestigious of the three, with visits by the Queen and Royal family members. Access to the Royal Enclosure is restricted, with high security on the day. First-time applicants must apply to the Royal Enclosure Office and gain membership from someone who has attended the enclosure for at least four years.
It offers idyllic gardens leading on to the pre-parade ring and restaurants offering everything from a fine dining experience to seafood.
A new restaurant in the Royal Enclsoure opened it's doors this year - the aptly named Balmoral. The Balmoral evokes the spirit of a convivial Highland summer gathering combining great traditions with elegant informality. Lunch is a celebration of the best of British ingredients including Scottish seafood, Royal Estate beef, locally sourced cheese and an array of delightful treats.
Refreshing beverages.
And of course afternoon tea.
Royal Ascot is synonymous with fantastic style, in fact it's become a major fashion event in its own right.
For ladies in the Royal enclosure, the following dress code applies:
- Dresses and skirts should fall just above the knee or longer.
- Dresses and tops should have straps of one inch or greater.
- Trouser suits and jumpsuits are welcome.
- Headpieces must have a solid base of four inches or more.
The 2018 Ascot style guide notes "Our dress code is traditional, woven into the very fabric of our history. It was Beau Brummell, perhaps Britain’s first fashion icon, who at the turn of the 19th century dictated the dress for men in the Royal Enclosure. His sense of style is still reflected in Royal Ascot fashions today. In 2017, Royal Ascot successfully welcomed the jumpsuit as an acceptable item of clothing for the Royal Enclosure. Ascot continues to recognise key trends in the ever-evolving world of fashion. Additions to the official dress code in 2018 makes socks a requirement for gentlemen and specific necklines detailed as acceptable, or not, across all Enclosures."
Before day one concluded, the Duke and Duchess presented the final winner’s trophy of the day.
The couple congratulated jockey Frankie Detorri who won the St James's Stakes.
Several readers asked if Meghan wore a name tag - it was on her clutch.
A nice video from the trophy presentation.
A reader named Tiara kindly sent me a link to a piece Meghan wrote for her defunct lifestyle website The Tig, where Meghan revealed she has "a love for all things Brit" and wrote about the Kentucky Derby. I thought it fitting to share the quote today.

'The Kentucky Derby, a deep rooted tradition I have long wanted to take part in. I see myself wearing a massive hat (ceremoniously so), sipping a mint julep, and tumbling into the Southern revelry of it all; (I do have a soft spot for the pomp and circumstance, if I’m being honest). - Meghan'
It appears the Duchess had a wonderful time at Royal Ascot!
The Duchess looked stunning in a monochrome ensemble for her Ascot debut. Meghan's bespoke Givenchy white dress features an asymmetric midi hemline. It's another outstanding look from Clare Waight Keller. It would certainly appear we'll see Meghan turning to the talented designer for important royal events.
A closer look at the lace detailing.

Meghan's black and white Philip Treacy hat was the perfect choice for the occasion.

Several of you noted the look is reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. The late actress was Hubert de Givenchy's greatest muse. Over fifty years later, Meghan is championing the same fashion house.

Also today, Kensington Palace confirmed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will undertake a two day visit to Dublin on 10 & 11 July. The Palace added: "This visit is at the request of Her Majesty's Government. The Duke and Duchess are looking forward to learning more about Ireland's history and experiencing its rich culture, as well as meeting the people who are shaping the country's future." It will be the couple's first official overseas trip since the Royal wedding. Omid Scobie understands the itinerary will include a visit to Trinity College, the Guinness Storehouse and a meeting with President Michael D Higgins at his official residence รras an Uachtarรกin. We should see more details released within the next week or two.
The couple are expected to visit the Netherlands in late July. French media outlets are also reporting Harry and Meghan will visit France on 8 August for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Amiens, in Amiens Cathedral.
THAT HAT!!!!! I swoon!
ReplyDeleteI take the dress, too!:)
DeleteI just zoomed in on the dress and it looks like some detailing so I’m excited to see the rest of the dress.
DeleteHer hat is gorgeous ๐
DeleteGorgeous hat!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOH, ADORABLE! Love that hat!!
ReplyDeleteI was waiting for this post! Thank you MAM!
ReplyDeleteShe looks gorgeous.
Utterly stunning! Can't wait to see the dress full length, it has an asymmetric hem on tv :)
ReplyDeleteLove the hat! It’s great to see Meghan riding with Sophie. What a fun day!
ReplyDeleteLove it all! That hat! So My Fair Lady but smaller!
ReplyDelete& it's a "Hat Trick" for Givenchy!!! :) (hockey term for 3 goals scored:) (3 winning looks = Wedding Gown, Day with The Queen & now Ascot! :)
ReplyDeleteYes, those three are winners, although I would argue her wedding reception dress and tea party frock are contenders.
DeleteAgree Greybird! I was just trying to be clever! :)
DeleteBecca ๐๐ I love a good pun.
DeleteCharlotte,
ReplyDeleteYou’re the best! Thanks for the advance peek - You’re my first stop in the morning and this partly the reason why.
Looks like our Duchess has nailed it with the hat. She’s doing so well. Can’t wait to see the dress!
-Duch
I notice that today, and on the day of the garden party, - events where a messy bun wouldn't do - Meghan wore her bun to the left side of her head. Likely to make sure those shorter strands on the left side stay put.
ReplyDeleteLove the hat! Will reserve judgement on the dress til I see more of it. Sophie is killin’ It!!
ReplyDeleteAgreed!!! I'm in love with Sophie's look!
DeleteYes, Sophie looks wonderful!
DeleteI agree. I love the fun black trim on the sleeves of Sophie's dress. I always look forward to her Ascot looks.
DeletePerfection.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. Uhhhh - and that HAT!!!! I´m swooning, too!!
ReplyDeleteA real hat with a bit of embellishment…Yahoo! It Is pretty tame by many other hats seen at Ascot, but Meghan is getting into the swing of hat wearing. The dress and colour look pretty plain, but I await to see it full length.
ReplyDeleteOh boy, oh boy, oh boy!!!! I am beside myself and literally jumping up and down with a stupid grin on my face! What a magnificent hat, and I'm sure if it's Givenchy the rest of the outfit will be lovely too. THIS is the Meghan, Duchess of Sussex I have been longing to see; I always felt sure she was in there, and here she is in all her glory. She looks absolutely spectacular today - this doesn't just knock it out of the park, this knocks it out of the whole neighbourhood and into the next town! Way to go Meghan - what a star!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Many congratulations to Zara and Mike on the birth of their second daughter. I'm so thrilled for them that everything seems to have gone OK this time.
๐ธ She had the baby? YAY๐
Delete๐ Congratulations Zora, Mike and Mia ๐
P.S. me thinketh that Mia might prove to be a formidable “big sister”. ๐
DeleteWonderful news!
DeleteHelen, I love your comment!! esp. about Meghan knocking it out of the whole neighbourhood! :) Thank you for your sincere enthusiasm and I hope you'll find a lot more opportunities for your jumping! ๐!
DeleteCan't wait to fully see the dress. I'm in love with Sophie's ensemble!! So Great & she looks lovely in it!! :) Love her hat & her updo!
ReplyDeleteNice! Looks like she's wearing fake lashes and certainly more makeup than usual, which I think looks smashing.
ReplyDeleteI give up with Megan and Givenchy. Lovely hat, though.
ReplyDeleteI agree. She is such a petite womam and these Givenchy dresses are not tailored to her size. If you watch Suits, stills from the show or press events , she is very tiny so I don’t understand. I realize she can’t wear the tight form fitting dresses she used to but woah this is on the other end of the scale and she’s swimming in them.
DeleteJax in Canada
Beautiful
ReplyDeleteI think the hat is lovely, and her hair works well with it in this style, but I'm not so sure I like the dress. Maybe I will when I get a better look.
ReplyDeleteI like the dress but not with the black belt.
ReplyDeleteHi Pam! I like the black belt but I'm not loving the belt buckle, I don't know what it is but it's just not working for me.
DeleteIt's just all of the black accents...on the hat, the belt, the shoes. I'm not a fan of the alternating accent color look,...color (in this case black) on top, then white/cream, color in the middle, then more white/cream, then color on the bottom. At first I thought it would be better if the black accents were a spring like color instead, but now I'm thinking it's the alternating thing I'm not liking. Or if the belt were a softer material and not leather (or whatever the material is). And yes, Lauri, you're right. The buckle seems out of place.
DeleteAgree Pam, and do not think the shirtdress style works for this event, at leaf not in this fabric. Between the collar and the hem it just looks a bit sloppy in this fabric. The shoes are a bit odd also.
DeletePam, I think you caught what bothered me about this outfit, other than the high-low hem--the leather belt versus a soft, perhaps self-belt of the same material. The black emphacises her waist and keeps drawing attention away from that spectacular hat.
DeleteOverall, a classy look.
On second thought, perhaps not alternating color as much as alternating mood or style: the tailored shirtwaist collar in contrast with the whimsical feathered hat; the lacy-look embellishment juxtaposed with the sporty belt; the fanciful hemline against the business-like leather heels. Perhaps a statement on Ascot tradition itself--a sporting event that is also a fashion event. A celebration of contrasts.
Im not sure about this combo either, I do like the dress but not with the belt or at least not the placement of the belt (right in the middle of the stitching detail), or maybe if the belt was fabric and didn't have that buckle. not a huge fan of the hemline either, but it is a pretty dress just didn't think this was a wow for me for her first Ascot, was hoping for something more exciting. those are pretty blah shoes as well, I really like heels in general (miss being able to wear them!) but those are just boring;( really do love love the hat though and it looked great on her too, think it would be hard getting used to the hat thing but she is pulling it off. I think in general her clothes have been good, just wrong for the events she is attending.
DeleteI’m with all of you on the belt, it could have been fabric and in black for a softer look. But OMG THE HAT ! Love the hat !
DeleteI’m not sure about the ‘shirt dress’ look but she looks gorgeous and relaxed. Look forward to watching them present the winners later.
ReplyDeleteDown with the shirt dress Too.
DeleteI'm with you, Mr. D. She's always gorgeous, but these shirt dresses aren't my favorite.
DeleteOh man. The wrinkles! It’s so obvious. I love the rest of the dress but that’s bad.
ReplyDeleteI don’t see any wrinkles. Dress is lovely.
DeleteThere not wrinkles. The dress has some sort of design around the waist
DeleteWe must be looking at different photos here, I don't see a single wrinkle on her dress
DeleteI don't think it's wrinkles, I think it's embellishment at the waist of the dress. Unless you're looking at something else...
DeleteIt is embellishments! That is both a brilliant and terrible design. Brilliant in that it would hide any wrinkles around the waist area that would occur with sitting in a thin dress in the heat but also terrible that it looks like wrinkles from far away or without great pics.
DeleteI thought wrinkles at first but it’s lace. Love this look. Stunning. Loved the comments about liking pomp and circumstance ., ironic!
DeleteExactly my thought when I first saw the dress!
DeleteThat photo with John Warren is A D O R A B L E..... Shows you who Meghan is...
ReplyDeleteY E S !
DeleteI could not agree more, Becca. Very well said.

The Duchess of Sussex looks lovely. I haven’t seen the others, so I’ll be back to comment later. Thanks again, Charlotte.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!!! She dialed it in today. Yay!!!!!
ReplyDeleteShe really likes the assymetrical hemline.
I love both hat and dress!! Looking forward more details but what I see is beautiful! Thanks Charlotte!
ReplyDeleteI liked the outfit from the first picture in the carriage. Hat, makeup, hair, dress - all looked great from the carriage. I wish I had never seen the rest of the dress because I really dislike the handkerchief look of the hem. Oh well. Other than that, she looks lovely, as usual.
ReplyDeleteThis shows how different we all are on what we like. I like the whole outfit, especially the hat and the unique hemline of her dress.
Delete@Old Zoey-
DeleteAnd the world would be a very dull place if we all liked the same things! :-)
I seriously love the hat on her.
She looks FABULOUS!!! She and Charles seem to get along great. Also, I love the photo with John Warren. Her first instinct is to be helpful. I love that!
ReplyDeleteI forgot to comment on the hat in my first comment. I LOVE that hat!!!!! I really love that shape of hat on her. It is reminiscent of the the one she wore to the garden party and to Trooping the Color.
ReplyDeleteThis is just lovely. Her breakout Royal hat, and she rocks it. Took a page from Kate's book on dress style. Love the freckles and how naturally kind she appears.
ReplyDeleteI love this shirtdress! I don't think she could have picked anything better for this event.
ReplyDeleteThank you Charlotte for the quick post! It’s always a nice surprise. She looks lovely and the hat is spot on.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I read some of the comments with the Daily Mail photos. Such hateful vitriol! While many voice their opinions and criticism on this site, I don’t think I’ve ever seen comments like I read there. It’s a testament to Charlotte and the people who frequent this blog. Well done to us all!
Lesley from Dallas
The criticism over at DM concerning Harry and Meghan is horrible. Charlotte and her readers seem to offer comments with class.
DeleteAgreed! We can agree or disagree, have similar or different tastes & still never attack Meghan or each other! Sure it can get heated as we sometimes try to understand one another, but it's always civilized in the end! This is a true testament to Charlotte & the blog environment she's cultivated & curated on both DKB & MAM!! Thank you again Charlotte for all of your hard & thoughtful work!! :) xo
DeletePlease, ignore the Daily Mail,we all know it's awful! It became ridiculous!
DeleteI wonder if all those haters would like to ... marry Harry!:)
Wow, just wow! I did not expect this hat today but I'm loving it!!! Jumpy claps, jumpy claps!! This is a proper Royal Ascot hat and Meghan is absolutely rocking it!! In fact I love this whole look, well expect for the belt buckle it's just not doing it for me. This dress is stunning, simple but made so elegant with the subtle embroidery. And my goodness, Harry looks so dapper in his tails and top hat! Grrr!!!
ReplyDeleteI do have to give a shout out to Princess Eugenie today, her dress and hat are simply to die for!! I'm so looking forward to her wedding in the fall and am hoping that she'll wear Vivian Westwood for either her wedding dress or reception dress, she has a stunning figure and Ms Westwood knows how to dress it to it's full potential.
My goodness that outfit is just wonderful.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!!! Love the transparent edge of the hat. So beautiful. Love the dress too. Excited to see closeups of the detail around the waist.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree -- that tiny detail on the hate makes it a real show stopper!
DeleteI do love a hat with a little zhuzh to it.
DeleteSuch a wonderfully sophisticated hat! But the dress far too plain for ascot. Would have loved to see a bright dress with a little black in it to compliment the hat.
ReplyDeleteLove the classic lines of the dress with a modern twist to the hem line. Love the hat, it frames her face perfectly. The entire look is pure Meghan in its simplicity and neutral elegance. Meghan is really getting a very quick introduction to all things royal in a very short time span since her marriage. I can't wait to see the other treats in her closet by the House of Givenchy.
ReplyDeleteMy only complaint: why haven’t we seen this gem of a dress and hat sooner?! My goodness. The lace detail is fantastic. And I love that she and Sophie seem to be regular carriage mates now!
ReplyDeleteAnd congrats to Zara and Mike on baby girl 2!
Mia has a sis!! Fantastic day so far!!:))
DeleteYes, Congrats To Zara with 2 little girls now!! :)
Delete+1 ๐! It seems the sets of 2 little girls are quite popular among Princess Anne's children! ๐
DeleteLovely dress and hat!I love this outfit!
ReplyDeleteMy fair lady!! I see what you did there Meghan, I think she is having fun with this. Looks very beautiful!
ReplyDeleteShe looks very pretty. The hat is beautiful. The dress is pretty but not with the leather belt. A soft belt of the same fabric or if you wanted to contrast in another color of the fabric. There is just so much cream that the skinny black belt and shoes while I realize are a tie in to the hat just are not working. Not sure the dress seems quite formal enough with the mens suits. Not usually a fan of her hem style but I think it looks very pretty with this dress and fabric.
ReplyDeleteMeghan’s look is perfection. The fit of the dress is impeccable, the handkerchief hem line and embroidery dresses up the “shirt” part of the shirt dress, the hat has a very stylish shape, and all perfectly accessorize with the black belt, clutch, and shoes. This is the monochrome look of a woman of great style. She just looks lovely! I think she and Givenchy are a marvellous collaboration as is Kate and McQueen. ( Administrator, please delete if this appears multiple times, as I couldn’t seem to get this comment to publish at first.)
ReplyDeletewonderful
So well said Anon 16:01 :)
DeleteShe is simply stunning! This is an elegant look, and her assisting the man with binoculars is so adorable!
ReplyDeleteThink of how many uppity people would not have bothered to help another, let alone notice that someone else was in need of help. Here is HRH The Duchess of Sussex, helping this lovely man just as naturally & kindly as can be! I love how real & caring she is & is not afraid of showing it! People first with her! Bravo! :)
DeleteI agree, Becca - Meghan seems to be a naturally caring person! I like it so much! Such details tell a lot!
DeleteI love how ฮeghan knows her style and loves it and owns it.
ReplyDeleteHer confidence makes her look amazing no matter what.
She knows how to work what she likes and I think thats what makes a true fashion icon.
Dazzling! Resplendent! The hat is off the scale chic! The dress, with its embroidered details, looks so elegant on her and looks even better when she walks. She is so naturally beautiful and regal, and fits in so perfectly.
ReplyDeleteSeeing this gorgeous couple has really made my day!
Yes,Grenada,i totally agree!!!!
DeleteSigh! :)
DeleteI agree with the "my fair lady" comment. This hat is perfection on her. Love it all, and Charles is just a riot. :) So wonderful that Zara and Mike have their second baby!! Great day all around.
ReplyDeleteOh Allison, how funny, I just posted a comment about My Fair Lady, before ready from the bottom up! lol :) Seems like my mind went to the same place! lol :)
Delete๐ธ Sophie actually looks very nice. ๐ณ๐
ReplyDeleteHer outfit is pretty. It makes sense. Yay, Sophie.
Do you think that Sophie and Meghan planned their outfits together? They do match. Maybe Meghan gave Sophie some fashion guidance?
I love Sophie!
DeleteI watched a mini video,Meghan and Sophie today going to Ascot and having a chat, both look great!!
Maybe they talk about their outfits,I don't think Meghan gave her advices.
I'm obsessed with Sophie's look today! Her dress, her hair & that adorable hat! I'm a big pink & black fan, so there is that! :)
DeleteSurfer Girl, I don't think Sophie needs fashion guidance and most especially not from Meghan, who is still trying to figure out what works and where to wear it. I like Meghan's hat but feel the dress is far to plain for Ascot. Also, I don't care for the black leather belt, with a prominent buckle over the delicate embroidery on the dress. Meghan is getting there…but still not quite there just yet.
DeleteI'm rather surprised that Sophie continues to wear Emila Wickstead (for the 3rd time) after what she said about Meghan's wedding dress and hair. I do think that Sophie looks very nice but wearing Wickstead to an event attended by Meghan makes me think a bit differently about her.
DeleteIt seems that Meghan doesn’t care about this at all, so why should we get annoyed by it?
DeleteC.
I agree C. In fact, walker's comment could only give offence to givenchy, and it seems they didn't care. Why should Meghan or Sophie take it to heart?
DeleteLauri, If indeed Emily Wickstead was quoted accurately in what she said about Meghan's wedding dress and hair, Meghan would have every reason to boycott Wickstead in the future. But that doesn't mean that all of Meghan's friends and family have to boycott in sympathy. For all we know, Sophie may have ordered Wickstread clothing months ago. Also, perhaps Wickstead has personally apologized to Meghan and Meghan does not hold grudges.
DeleteI have a great respect for Sophie and her quiet role in the family. She is reportedly very close to the Queen. I think the fact that Sophie has repeatedly worn Wickstead speaks to the likelihood that there is indeed no ill-feeling toward EW, either within the RF or between the designers involved. I do not think Sophie would wear EW if there were. In fact,I think her support of the designer indicates there is more (or less) to the story than the media has offered.
DeleteThe two designer's outfits side by side in a royal carriage at Ascot. How much more do we need?
๐ธ Laura ๐ I just happened to like Meghan’s style way more than Sophie’s, no offense. Since their outfits are kind of similar I thought they seemed to be leaning more to Meghan’s style today. I thought maybe they had had some girltime and wardrobe planning fun for Ascot.
DeleteSophie and Meghan have very very different body types. They both have their own sense of style. FWIW I did not see anything about Sophie's Ascot outfit that looked like Meghan's but maybe I am missing something?
DeleteI can see the difference between cheap and expensive hats. Simply amazing.
ReplyDelete๐ธ MD ๐ (and Harry says, “Oh rats. I thought I had her fooled. Now there goes the budget.”)
DeleteThe Queen and all the ladies looked lovely. With the Duchess of Sussex, it is good to remember that her fashion style is more minimalist and not “over the top”. So far, she has been true to that style. Thanks, Charlotte; always appreciative of your work.
ReplyDeleteShe looks beautiful I adore the hat
ReplyDeleteThanks for your work Charlotte
I feel like a witch but I think Meghan always gets it almost there but not quite. I watched it live and was so excited when I saw her in the carriage. I couldn't wait to see her standing but thought oh! I think if the hem was straight and the skirt had more volume it would have been outstanding! I love the hat, lace detail, fabric, her hair and make-up. She is a stunning woman! My daughter loves everything except the belt. She says it's like a belt you would wear on trousers. It must be a generational thing. She adored the handkerchief hem and lightweight skirt.
ReplyDeleteI found the belt very jarring also. Maybe better in person? The idea of a shirt dress and the trouser belt I understand, just do not think it quite works with this fabric.
DeleteI didn't mind the belt but the buckle was all wrong.
DeleteThe belt is a very "50ies" style detail, in perfect sync with the style of the dress. My mum, God bless her, would clap her hands in delight... Maybe we´re not used to this anymore... ;-)))
DeleteOk, sorry to say I’m not fond of the shirt dress and belt. But the hat is the bomb.
ReplyDeleteYou sound like me! lol :)
DeleteI like the dress, but not the belt.
DeleteYep, agree 100%.
DeleteMeghan looks lovely & it's fun to see her in a "fun" hat! I'm traditionally a huge fan of "The Spectator Look", so I get the idea behind her look... but somehow it's just not revving my engine? I love the material, lace detail, the lines of the dress, the asymmetric hem of the dress... but I'm hankering for a different type of neckline. The shirtdress collar just seems a tad casual for Ascot & for the rest of the beauty of the dress. I get the idea of a black belt, but somehow with this dress it seems to detract from the otherwise lovely graceful lines. Perhaps a soft matching belt would have given the dress more flow? I think with a matching color for the belt, then the black pumps & purse would still work for the Spectator Look? She looks lovely & so at home there among her new family & in her new position.... Harry is obviously one very happy Husband! :)
ReplyDeleteI like Meghan from the neck up. The hat is beautiful. The dress is a bit boring. The lace part could have been a different color - maybe black, as someone else suggested. Or the skirt could have been lightly accordion pleated, with hints of black showing.
ReplyDeleteYes!! If the lace overlay had been black that would have been awesome!
DeleteOh the lace being black would have been stunning!!
DeleteIt just dawned on me that Meghan is having her own Eliza Doolittle moment! In My Fair Lady, Eliza's ensemble was "Spectator". White with black accents. The hat was even white with a wide brim with black as the accent color. The dress as well had black accents. I have no idea if this was intentional, but it's a fun coincidence! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree--this is a nod to "My Fair Lady" with the white dress, white hat, and black accents. And Meghan looks stunning in this outfit. I love it.
DeleteThe nod makes sense on another level too--Audrey Hepburn played the part of Eliza Doolittle in the movie; Audrey Hepburn is arguably the actress most closely associated with Givenchy--until now?!!
DeleteOmg ladies, I love the connections you are making here! It all makes so much sense.
DeleteRoyal ๐ Watcher
๐ธBecca, Marci, R๐W. ๐
DeleteIt’s got to have at least a little something to do with Meghan’s theatre/wardrobe experience.
Maybe those kind of tie-ins will become
“the Meghan things”. (Like the Ingrid Bergman, “Play It Again Sam” misty morning war-era trench coat and wide-brimmed hat that Meghan wore to the misty early morning war-era war memorial service. She and Ingrid could have been twins.๐
Spectator pumps would have completed that look!
DeleteHope from USA
I agree, Marci! There are definitely more levels! ๐I absolutely love "My Fair Lady" and Audrey Hepburn in it. All those hats in the Ascot scene are unforgettable - as well as the two ladies with identical hats! ๐
Delete๐ธ Becca. ๐ What, do you think, are the odds of all those similarities being coincidental? ๐
Delete๐ธ another similarity. Eliza had similar embroidery on her dress. ๐ Puurrrity clever.
DeleteI truly hope she is not giving a nod to any films, musicals etc in her attire choices.
DeleteWOW! I think she looks stunning. All of the women look great! There isn't anyone that missed marked.
ReplyDeleteI just knew that Meghan and Harry were going to be in attendance on day 1. Sure hope that William and Kate make an appearance as well.
If the dress wasn't a 'shirt-dress style' I do think it would have gone up a notch but overall, it's a nice look for Meghan. I wish she had worn the shoes with the ankle straps as they are a little more feminine IMHO but I'm guessing she's playing it safe when appearing with HM.
Why doesn't Meghan have a name tag on? Everyone else does.
No Beatrice and Eugenie do not have nametags, so Meghan is fine.
DeleteWow love the Eliza Doolitle hat! And the shirt dress is meghan's way of "staying meghan" while adapting to the royal look. Love this whole ensemble. ONLY thing I'd change is the shoes. Seems like black leather pumps are Meghan's version of Kate's nude pumps. Safe but Ascot is the place to try more adorned shoes.
ReplyDeleteDuchess Meghan is simply wonderful in every way today! I so admire how she looks so comfortable in this traditional event setting! WOW! Well done DoS :)
ReplyDeleteI agree Anon17:06 she looks wonderful!!
DeleteThis I love, love love. And Prince Charles looks so happy to see her too. Phew, well done Duchess of Sussex!

Hello everyone. My first post here, although I am a regular, and grateful, visitor to this, and Charlotte's "Duchess Kate" blog.
ReplyDeleteI agree with most of the comments already posted - gorgeous hat, excellent black and white scheme, but perhaps not sufficient black. I really don't like the "shirt-waister" neck and button-cuff details. So much better with a simpler (bateau?!) neckline, three quarter length sleeves and black embellishments. Or a short black jacket.....
๐ธ Welcome, Judith. ๐
DeleteHer hat truly is extraordinary!! I was just looking at the pics again.... & I must admit the whole ensemble (complete with shirtcollar & black belt) is growing on me! lol :) I'm obsessed by that see through portion of the brim on the hat!! Somehow, when I focus on that see through brim & I then have my eyes glide down over the rest of the ensemble, & taking in the asymmetrical flowing hem...... it all registers in my brain as amazing???? Now what's that about?? Do we have a neurologist here?? lol :) It's amazing how the eyes perceive things differently in the way we view things? xo
ReplyDeleteHee hee Becca, I am the opposite of you. The more I look at the whole ensemble the less I like it. The hat is lovely, the fabric is lovely and then it ends for me.
DeleteI agree with you, Ali. The hat is amazing--as is her hair style. The fabric of the dress is beautiful, too, but somehow the collared shirtwaist, tailored belt, etc. are not in harmony with the hat.
DeleteAaah breathtaking! Beautiful, beautiful Meghan, the hat :) :) and the dress, love, love, love!
ReplyDeleteCharlotte! Mark Stewart the royal photographer has this beautiful phot of Harry looking at Meghan, it looks so beautiful, did you see it???? Please post it here, Lol!
ReplyDeleteLike the dress, not a big fan of the hat. But I'm in the minority, so it's probably my personal "problem". Haha. :)
ReplyDeleteI like this outfit! The hat is perfect, just enough pizazz and not over the top. I actually like this Givenchy dress, It has clean lines and she suits this look. In comparison he dress worn to Celia's wedding need a little work, it just engulfed her petite frame. It would have been lovely had it been narrower and not so much volume, even the shoulders looked big on her.
ReplyDeleteYea! I love this hat, she looks so chic. I think also seeing her with Charles and especially how he stepped in for the wedding has made him grow on me more. I wasn't much of a fan before, but am now able to appreciate him. He has so many great causes he has championed over the years, especially supporting organic, local food way before it was popular. Right up Meghan's alley too I think. What a great looking day all around.
ReplyDeleteI love the way he is smiling at her amid his laughter! He has charmed the socks of me as well! I'm all about Charles now, a complete change from years of resentment because of Diana! Now I think he's absolutely charming & sweet! :) Much more tuned in than I ever gave him credit for.... I'm glad I see him in this way now! :)
Delete๐ธ lol. yep. Meghan is the best PR campaign Charles has EVER had. And it only works because he really likes her and it shows. I have NEVER seen the man so unguarded, so warm and friendly (although, because of my research, I knew he was/is). Now the world knows. ๐ค
DeleteBecca & Surfer Girl, I see a relaxed Prince Charles too. The whole RF seems to have warmed right up for Meghan. It’s wonderful for a new bride, new country, new social status to have been enfolded so quickly.
DeleteMM is an amazing and brave woman---imagine leaving your comfort one and charming the Queen and future king!
Delete๐ธ Susan in Florida ๐ Really, lol. That’s “quickly” as in “Warp Speed”.๐ณ
Delete๐ธ LOVE THE HAT. Shades of Eliza Doolittle. ๐
ReplyDeleteTo begin with, I didn’t like the dress as much as I liked the hat. But now I LOVE the whole outfit.๐ค
What I like so much about it, other than it being perfect, is that it is different. Not run-of-the-mill. Even designer house bespoke outfits can be run-of-the-mill.
And I truly think that Meghan’s training and experience in theatre and wardrobe are contributing to the successful outfits we have seen to date and there have been quite a few. They are stylish and different.
Like the war-era trench coat and wide-brimmed hat, Ingrid Bergman “Play It Again Sam” style, that Meghan wore to the war-era memorial service, then the classic 50’s/60’s style dress she wore for the visit to Chester, etc. I think we are going to see Diana-style efforts (only contemporary) from Meghan. And I appreciate that. I am excited to see Meghan’s style story unfold.
SG---you have deciphered the whole thing! I see it now---Casablanca at the memorial , etc. Always a little something there that's hard to pinpoint. Good work :)
DeleteI'm realizing that Clare Waight Keller is just not my favorite. With the exception of the dress Meghan wore for her day of outings with the Queen, all the other Givenchy looks have *almost* been there, but fallen short. And I can never put my finger on what exactly it is! I think it might be the tailoring....the first images I saw of Meghan in the carriage were amazing and I was very excited about her outfit, but once I saw the dress in full, it just doesn't seem to fit right, yet again (same as with her wedding dress).
ReplyDeleteShirt dresses aren't my favorite to begin with, but I do like the formal take on it. The collar, however, lends a casual element that clashes with the formality of the skirt portion, as well as with the embroidery. Then, we have the belt that I ordinarily wouldn't have an issue with, but for some reason, again, it just looks off here.
It makes sense that Meghan ordered a handful of looks from Givenchy to supplement her wardrobe for these royal events that were scheduled so soon after the wedding, but I can't help but hope that she moves on to different designers soon. I really don't think Clare Waight Keller understands tailoring for Meghan's figure...because one can achieve the sort of loose/minimalist style that Meghan so loves without making her outfits feel odd.
That hat is perfection and I'm so happy Meghan brought back her chic chignon. I always look forward to her interactions with Charles, now, too. The way Harry is glancing at Meghan in that one close-up photo is just lovely.
I agree that there is something off regarding the formality of the hat compared to the dress. They are both stunning but don’t quite work together.
DeleteCharlotte, lovely post always. Why does Meghan not have a name tag like everyone else?
ReplyDeleteIn several pictures (mostly on other sites), you can see her carrying in her hand next to her clutch.
DeleteThe Queen, Camilla, Eugenie and Beatrice are not wearing nametags, so it's not everyone else wearing a name tag
DeleteThe costumes in My Fair Lady were designed by Cecil Beaton :)
ReplyDeleteLove the reference to Eliza Doolittle. Meghan, true to her own style went exactly in the opposite direction with the same colour scheme! Eliza was one fantastic embellishment from head to toe, completely and wonderfully over-the-top! Just loved it! In regard to Meghan's dress, I think that the drapey fabric, irregular hem, and white applied lace with just the belt relieving the white (same one as worn in Cheshire?) elevates the shirt dress into something elegant. A popular and conservative dress style made newly stylish. And the more I look at the hat, the more delightful it appears!
ReplyDeleteis!
Her hat is beautiful, I don’t love her dress, but I love how she looks, if that makes sense. It’s very appropriate and it fits her perfectly.
ReplyDeleteMmm this outfit is not only simple and elegant, there is this finesse going on, she looks beautiful but not in your face beautiful? this is nice dlone Meghan! Just refined if I may say. I wonder what perfume she wore to go with this outfit?
ReplyDeleteOh that side portrait photo of Meghan is Striking!! She looks Stunning! This Whole Ensemble has worked it's magic on me!!! She is lovely!! Her Premiere Appearance At Ascot Is A Success!! Bravo HRH Duchess of Sussex!! :)
ReplyDeleteMeghan looks stunning! What a classy and elegant look!!!
Delete-Siddhii
I loved how contemporary Meghan's wardrobe is. Every woman I know has a shirt dress for that "It's Friday, I wanna look casual, but appropriate at work," moment. Her style is very relatable. But that hard is amazing
ReplyDeleteShe wears this simple but very elegant dress confidently! I think she knows she looks good. Good job Meghan!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous hat this is! I really like the lace on the silk dress -- just stunning.
ReplyDeleteI love Meghan's hat and the handkerchief hem. They are beautiful. Like Kate, Meghan has appropriated the My Fair Lady look for Ascot. All lovely. I just don't like the shirt dress collar with the rest of it. When shirt dresses were in style, we wore them to school or work. This look needs something much dressier. Meghan does seem to be having a lovely time at her first Ascot. I am so happy for her!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely adore that hat!!!! But the dress does nothing for me. The neckline, the hem, the belt, the fabric and the lace- actually I am no fan of the whole thing. But her and Harry’s smile just shine.
ReplyDeleteThis year my first place goes to Eugenie- perfect dress for her figure, very flattering and elegant. The Queen gets a close second- love the vibrant yellow.

๐ธ wait a minute. Not ONLY did Meghan get to fulfil her fantasy of attending a thoroughbred race. ๐ณ
ReplyDeleteSHE got to present the Queen’s trophy to the winner of Ascot.๐ณ While wearing custom designed Givency.
Somebody pinch me. ๐ณ
Surfer Girl, one of Meghan's new years resolutions in 2016 came from when she was talking to her co worker about how she had her year all planned out and her coworker said that it all sounded great but don't forget to leave room for magic. She loved that thought so that was her New Year's resolution and that was the year she met Harry. Seems like the magic just keeps coming. What a fairytale for her.
DeleteI totally love her look. Nice the dress, wonderful the hat. In her place I would have dared more with the shoes, that I find a little boring but the ensamble is very well matched. Meghan and Harry looks so happy. So nice to see them smiling.
ReplyDeletelove the hat.. beautiful look.
ReplyDeleteNo id on her shoes?
canadian fan
I adore the hat, I'm just not in love with all the rest. I was also hoping for a little color. I do, however, like the lace detailing in the front.
ReplyDeleteAs an add on to 17:06, I'm so tickled to see the Queen so joyful with the DoS! Once again, whatever she and Meghan are talking about, the Queen looks like she is giggling! What fun :)
ReplyDeleteShe really does light up around Meghan!! :) xo
DeleteThank you so much, Charlotte, for a splendid post! I love Meghan's look, all about it! She is so elegant and Harry looks so dapper and happy! And the Queen... HM looks s*t*u*n*n*i*n*g today! I suppose she is happy about the new arrival (Anne's granddaughter) and of course about being at her favourite place! Plus seeing Harry and Meghan happy and so many members of the family together...
ReplyDeleteThe only thing that makes me a little sad is Prince Philip's absence - is anything known about how he is?
Philip is great, he was photographed carriage driving this weekend.
DeleteZora, we all miss Prince Philip. He did announce a year or so ago, that he was retiring from public functions and would pick and choose which events he attends. I would say he is doing okay, but people who have had hip surgery often take a year before they feel good again, regarding their mobility. For Philip, the surgery was only a few months ago and I would imagine extended time on his feet is not easy. Plus he is 97 years old! Considering some people are in nursing homes in their late 60s, Philip is doing extremely well. Everyone was cheering for him to be at the wedding and he got there and walked down the aisle without a cane. Let's hope that we will see more of him this summer.
DeleteI think I saw a photo of Philip going carriage driving recently. He seems to be well. Not bad for someone who just celebrated their 97th birthday! :)
DeleteThank you, Ivy and Laura! I thought it might be difficult for PP to drive in a carriage after his operation but if he was driving one this weekend, things are much better than I feared! ๐ I was so happy to see him at the wedding in May and also applauded him for walking without a cane. He is a tough man. I suppose I tend to see a bit of my father in him (he was 1 year younger than PP and passed away in 2010). Do you think he was watching Ascot, Day 1, on TV/online, or just waited for HM to tell him all about it? ๐
Delete๐ธ Phillip? Carriage Drivjng this past weekend??
Delete๐ณ Even for a man like Prince Phillip, THAT surprises me.
I am living for that hat; it is a gorgeous piece of art! Meghan looked beautiful, happy, regal and settled. And that makes me smile. HM looked amazing, too. Her smile warms my heart; I just want to hug her!
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy looking at pictures of Ascot: the fashion, the fanciness of it all...
Thanks, as always, for a great post!

Oh gosh I like your comment, 'regal and settled' describe s the Duchess well!
DeleteI really want her hat. Has anyone noticed with his hat on, looking at Meghan, Prince Harry resembles his grandfather and the way he would look at the Queen.
ReplyDeleteVery true, Susan! ๐
DeleteMeghan’s hat is everything! I’m in love with it ๐ I could take or leave the dress, but it’s a nice debut for Royal Ascot. Sophie doesn’t look half bad, either :) Lovely to see HM so jovial & Meghan displaying her warmth & empathy to others.
ReplyDeleteIm disappointed in this outfit. I feel that it is not formal enough for the occasion. A shirt dress with handkerchief hem looks too casual, especially when compared to the other women, and the dress looks cream in many shots with the hat being white. I like her hair though.
ReplyDeleteDid everyone get the memo? Everyone (the senior royals) was in black and white except HM. I recall Kate wearing white to this function more often then not as well. Everyone just hit the mark today. Even the cousins hmm...
ReplyDeleteOh I totally missed that!!! You are so right! :)
DeleteA lovely debut for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at Royal Ascot. Harry looked so handsome and proud as he should be, his wife looked amazing. Head to toe, I love Meghan’s simple elegance! Her glamorous hat, shirt dress with lace details, the hem and how the dress flowed as she walked, lovely. Also nice to see Meghan’s interactions with other family members & friends. Her Majesty looked lovely in yellow! Glad Meghan was able to attend today, especially after yesterday’s betrayal & continued media harassment. I admire her strength!
ReplyDeleteI love the absolutely fabulous way Harry and Meghan look at each other so lovingly!
Dena
I loved & agree with everything you said Anon 23:19, tho I keep going back & forth (depending on which pic I'm looking at :) about whether the design of a "shirtdress" was quite dressy enough for ascot? I love everything about the dress but the shirting detail keeps giving me back & forths. I seem quite flighty about that one quibble with the collar & placket? Don't mind me! lol :)
DeleteHat- stunning
ReplyDeletehair- perfect
dress- FITS! and Looks lovely
tiniest quibble- did they have a bunch of wedding dress fabric left over and keep making dresses out of the extra? The lace detail almost looks like they were practicing adding lace to her wedding gown and changed their mind and put it on this dress. I'm also not a fan of the hemline, but really, minor minor quibble. She really rocks the hats, looks happy, and very royal today :) We will just forget this past Saturday's wedding :/
Isn't it funny how we all see things differently? I love the lace overlays & I love the hemline. lol :)
DeleteI absolutely love that hat, but not the dress! I'm not a fan of handkerchief hems. Sadly, Duchess Meghan's look is a bit too underwhelming even for my taste, and I'm a minimalist, although I adore good accessories. Still, Meghan is being true to her aesthetic and I can't ask for anything more!
ReplyDeleteStrangely, I have to add that I believe Princeess Eugenie and Beatrice nailed it! Go figure! And I absolutely loved Sophie's ensemble!
I think Meghan is a poor fourth in the style stakes today, behind Sophie, Eugenie and Beatrice (in that order). Royal Ascot is an excuse to blow it out of the water in the style stakes and there’s something very insipid about this dress. I adore the hat and the clutch, but the shirt dress is limp and frankly underwhelming for this one. The head shots with the hat alone are stunning. She is quite beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThis is my second comment, I initially liked the dress but seeing more pics of this dress , it reminds me of what my mum wore in her 60’s and 70’s. It’s the collar, it either needs to fully buttoned up or opened up big time, or taken off! It’s so matronly. I love the hat, it’s beautiful. I feel Meghan is trying to find her Duchess style. I would love to see her in something long but fitted. I loved what her friend Abigail wore to the wedding, long, buttoned up but with ooopmh.Sinead
ReplyDelete๐ธ I think, Senorita Dee, that like the hat, color of the dress and belt, that the lace is also a nod to Eliza Doolittle’s Ascot outfit. ๐
