Happy Birthday Meghan & Vogue Titbits You Might Have Missed

Hello, hello, I hope you're all having a fabulous weekend.

The Duchess of Sussex is celebrating her 38th birthday today, no doubt with Harry and Archie. It's been a landmark year for Meghan, filled with changes professional and personal. She dived into her royal role, launched her first project, undertook a major tour of four Commonwealth countries, chose her first four patronages, became vice president of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust and became the first person to guest-edit the September issue of Vogue in a century. When Meghan said she wanted to hit the ground running, she certainly meant it. In May, the Duchess gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, Archie (formerly known as Baby Sussex). The family of three moved into their residence Frogmore Cottage and will launch their own royal foundation in the autumn, Meghan's clothing line project on behalf of Smart Works is set to be unveiled next month, in addition to a tour of Africa. Yes, the remainder of the year is set to be incredibly exciting. It is not known exactly how she's spending the day, perhaps, she, Harry and Archie are enjoying their first holiday together?

Prince Harry left a very special message for his wife on the couple's Sussex Royal Instagram.

A gorgeous shot of Harry and Megan from their evening of baseball was shared by Buckingham Palace.

Birthday wishes from Charles and Camilla...

...and a Christmas photo from William and Kate.

**************

Have you picked up a copy of Vogue yet? I wanted to share several titbits I found particularly interesting. We know environmental efforts will form a key focus for Harry and Meghan's foundation. They will both have been delighted to learn the September issue marked a change for the magazine, becoming the first print issue wrapped in a fully compostable film derive from potato starch and plastic free. The publication has pledged to "reduce avoidable, harmful waste".

We spoke about the inclusion of Luminary Bakery in the issue earlier this week. The non-profit bakery is empowering women into employment by providing skills, work experience and support every step of the way. I was delighted to see founder Alice Williams on ITV talking about their collective efforts to empower women. The lesser-known faces in the issue now need to consider the ripple effect this exposure can have. Meghan (in her beautiful handwriting) wrote to the women of Luminary: "The work you do, what you represent to the community, the spirit of the women there - you all embody what it means to be 'forces for change'."

Meghan included one of her favourite pieces by writer and mental-health advocate Matt Haig.

His response to Meghan's letter was so touching. The Duchess replied: "The world needs more of you."

There's a lovely piece featuring eight designers discussing jewellery laden with family significance. I very much enjoyed Clare Waight Keller's quote:

'Since I was very young, my mother has always insisted on teaching us some of the things she had been taught by her own mother, such as sewing, knitting and how to prepare for things that might seem like simple everyday tasks but to which she has found the perfect solution - for example, organising a suitcase or preparing for school. She also taught me to treasure the things that you are given, or that you buy, and to think carefully about how you look after them. This is something I still do whenever I receive something.
When I was about seven, my parents gave me a silver charm bracelet with a heart-shaped lock as a birthday gift. Whenever I travelled, I collected charms to attach to it. I don't wear it anymore but it has great sentimental value and probably contributed to my "collector's" approach to jewellery".'

Smart Works' Kate Stephens is enormously excited about the upcoming clothing capsule collection which will benefit the growing charity. She said: "I had to regram these images from Sussex Royal because they capture so beautifully how the Duchess interacts with everyone she meets at Smart Works - images full of kindness, inspiration, empathy, energy, ideas and joy. It is no coincidence that we are helping more women than ever before and today is the last day of our busiest ever month. That is how we judge our success and I am so proud of everyone for making this happen."

Each month, Sussex Royal focus on a particular area and highlights accounts dedicated to it. This month, it's fittingly all about 'Forces for Change' and they are asking you to share yours on Instagram.

I shared a quote last night, which I think perfectly encapsulates Meghan's approach to her role.

"Who you are as a person will only be amplified once you are ‘famous’ so if you had a good heart then, I would imagine you'll have the same good heart, but the means to do even more with it" - Meghan.

Wishing the Duchess the happiest of birthdays. I cannot wait to see what she has in store over the next year!

  1. Happy birthday Meghan! Of the pics I like the one Clarence House chose as its first one. Very natural, signature wisp of hair from Meghan's bun, radiant smile. Also like SussexRoyal's picture of Meghan in her blue dress. It was sweet of KP to use a family portrait -- a gentle but firm reminder perhaps that despite all the media rumors they are FAMILY.

Salut Anne-Sophie! J'aime votre commentaire.

  3. The September edition of Vogue published by Meghan is out of order and some resell them to 4 times are initial selling price on the net. I think this is spectacular! Ever since she was a little girl, Meghan has wanted to make the world a better place, and I find that the results of her efforts make her feel better, with the love of her family, it’s the most beautiful gift in addition to Archie. Happy birthday Duchess. We love you very much. God bless you.

  5. The picture Prince Harry chose for his Instagram greeting to his wife is one pics I believe illustrates the Duchess' natural beauty. I believe it was taken on TRH's tour last year. She looks truly beautiful in that picture. She also looked beautiful in that blue cape gown in Togo. I am beginning to think blue might be her colour and she should wear it more often. And finally her handwriting is "to die for". Happy Birthday Duchess.

  17. I know that what I'm about to write has nothing directly to do with this post, but after listening to some prominent individuals' responses to the horrendous mass shootings here in the US over the weekend, I feel that it is important to clear up the misconceptions about mental illness and violence. I am trying to get this message to as many people as I can, because it is deeply important. Since Meghan, Harry, Kate, and William are focusing much of their work on mental health challenges and concerns, I felt it would be appropriate to share this information here.

Fact: People with mental health conditions are far more likely to be the victims of violence than the perpetrators of violence. While it is certainly true that we must work toward greater access and quality of mental health care around the globe, it must be pointed out that the linkage between mass violence and mental illness is a red herring – misleading and grossly distorted.

Some people assume that anyone who would commit an act of mass violence must be disturbed and therefore mentally ill; paired with this idea is the assumption that anyone with the intent of killing others must also be suicidal. Both of these notions are gravely untrue, conflating very distinct issues and behaviors.

It is important that people come to know the facts, and end the mistaken, widespread belief that acts of violence are driven by mental illness. Studies have found that of all violent acts in the U.S., less than five percent of violence in the U.S. is attributable to mental illness. While people who commit violent acts certainly have a host of problems that lead them to become violent, in the vast majority of cases, a treatable mental illness is NOT the cause. It should also be noted that the category of mass violent acts includes domestic/family violence, which are a much more common form of violence than public mass shootings.

Data shows that people committing violent acts are much more accurately characterized by other factors, such as a prior history of aggression, including domestic violence, often with a criminal record including convictions of violent misdemeanor crimes; and of alcohol and drug related offenses. Impulse control problems, trauma, rage, childhood adversity, desperation, financial strain, vindictiveness, narcissism, sociopathy, and psychopathy are all potential risk factors for violence and major problems to address, but they are not the same as a mental health condition.
To be clear, most people with depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, PTSD, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, substance use disorders, etc. do not exhibit violent behavior, particularly in the absence of the previously mentioned more potent risk factors.

In fact, people with mental health conditions are much more likely to be marginalized in our modern society in numerous ways. Lack of understanding, lack of access to quality mental health care, and lack of social support are major challenges we must overcome. Further, research shows that people with mental illness are more likely to be the victims of violence than people without mental illness, and are far more likely to be victims than perpetrators of violence.

Debunking the myth that links violence to mental illness is just one critical way we will make progress toward diminishing stigma, allowing more community members to have accurate perceptions and practice more compassionate approaches to people with mental illness.

    1. Thank you for this.

It’s a favorite tool of politicians to use mental health (or video games, social media, lone wolf loser, etc.) to avoid dealing with American gun culture as a public heath crisis. I’ve treated many patients with gunshot wounds and gun sellers are having their best moment selling more and more powerful, hi velocity guns with armor piercing bullets. People who shoot themselves ‘accidentally’ won’t give up their guns. I’ve had parents who carelessly left a loaded pistol for their children to find with deadly results won’t give up their guns. They see these events as an unfortunate accident, akin to a car accident where they reasoned, “you don’t see people giving up cars”.

For many Americans, the only way you are going to take away their gun is to pry it away from their “cold, dead hands.” These people will talk a good game about practicing gun safety, but want little punishment when things go wrong- hence the many legal loopholes. Sadly, many more Americans who go on about their daily routines will end up paying with their lives.

Gun culture considers these traumatic deaths acceptable collateral damage while handing out thoughts and prayers ad nauseam. It’s harder to shock Americans as these killings are routine, to the point of being tolerated. It takes a significant loss of life to make headlines. And within weeks, that outrage fades. America has sacrificed so many lives for this selfish gun culture that it has made a stone of the heart.

    2. Very very well said Sarah.
      I agree whole heartedly.
To see a mass shooting and have it be chalked up to “oh he was just mentally ill” just puts everyone who does something that is so vile and beyond comprehension into a neat little box, the same box of some people suffering in silence and with the fear of stigma. It’s laziness to be honest.
Sure, some people have true mental illness and go on to commit atrocities, but that is a small percentage.
It is ALWAYS dangerous to lump any group of people together in a negative connotation. It’s something that people need to be cognizant of every day.

    3. I add my support for what you said, Sarah. And saying someone has a "mental illness" is like saying they have a "disease." The details are what counts! And it's not even logical; consider how many people have some sort of mental (vs physical) situation, whether it is insecurity, depression, anxiety up to schizophrenia, versus how relatively few commit mass shootings. If only 20% of people in the US have a mental issue, that would be 39 million versus ~100 shootings, which is an incredibly tiny percentage, as awful as the shootings are.

Charlotte, what a beautiful post and a birthday is always a good time to reflect on from where we've come. Kudos to her!!! She is certainly going to be a tremendous asset to the BRF for decades to come. I recall so vividly in her engagement interview she remarked how vast the Commonwealth was and the opportunities; certainly enough for all. This generation of younger royals are really killing it!!

  20. I hope that Meghan had a fabulous birthday with her two princes. I expect she spent some of the time selecting the wonderful charities she announced this morning on Sussex Royal. They are less known and so deserving of broader support. I so admire Meghan's ability to amplify impact by connecting organizations related to the cause, as with those invited to design the capsule collection for Smart Works.

    1. I agree Ann, and as someone who is from one of the cities that had the mass shooting, the time now is to mourn those who were lost. It is a very political subject but very complex with no concrete solution. But above all else, before it gets analyzed and debated ad nauseum, our priority should be to show respect to those who lost their lives and to the families who need to lay their loved ones to rest. Quite honestly, while always up for intelligent dialogue on important topics, these two blogs are the places where I come to feel good about people doing good deeds for others, especially in light of some very dark moments in this world. Guess just tired of everywhere you turn somebody has to make their point heard....signed, stunned and heartbroken.

As sad as I am about the shootings , this blog is not the place for US political opinions , however well intended. I do respect the intention of Sarah from NC to try to educated people on mental heath. Wrong timing on a birthday post . Too many people jumping in and getting political. This blog supposed to our happy place. I get stuck reading opinions all day on other media. I really don’t want to see it here. I realize it puts a big burden on Charlotte to monitor the posts.

  27. I ordered the magazine from the newstand outlet Charlotte linked for us in an earlier post. - J G Palmer, was it? It arrived today in perfect condition and I am enjoying it very much. A word on September fashion magazines: this is their most important issue, so there will be masses of ads. The publishing world doesn’t make scads of cash, and adverts are how they survive. Bless Meghan for using her privileged place in the world to highlight the work of a few accomplished women. The mirror block is inspired.
